Plenty of memory... songs won't fit

When I plug it in, it says I have 460mb left of free space, but it started removing songs for me (i.e., it wants me to think I have more songs on iTunes than will fit on my iPod, but why do I have so much free space left?). If I can't fix that, then is it possible to choose which songs it won't put onto my iPod?

You can either set your iPod to update manually and drag what content you want to it or you can set it to "Sync Music - Selected Playlists" and set up a playlist of what you want to go on. You can get details on manually managing here:
Managing content manually on iPod
iPod 101: Fill 'er Up
If you want to used the selected playlist option, open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -iPod to make it the first playlist in Sources. You can make this a normal playlist and drag whatever you want to it or you can make it a random Smart playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano). Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection
You might also want to restore your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • Burn won't fit - is it minutes or MB's?

I'm getting the message that my songs won't fit on one CD. There are 55 songs (actually spoken word) 1.5 hours, 482 MB. The CD is 80 min, 700 MB. Is it the minutes or the MB that is important? 482 MB should fit easily.
Dell Precision 340   Windows XP Pro   iTunes 7.0.0.70

Its where your burning an audio CD.
All your songs/books are in either MP3 or AAC both being compressed formats. When a program gets ready to burn an audio CD, it has to uncompress the song(s) and burn them in a uncompressed format so a regular CD player can read it.
So the 400 and something MB COMPRESSED files when uncompressed are MUCH larger. If you look at the blank CD or the case it came in, it will tell you how many minutes of music it can hold on average. I THINK most 700MB CDs hold 80min worth of audio

  • Songs won't erase

I had about 45 songs on my mini that I don't listen to, so I deleted them from my library, but no matter how many times I update the iPod, the songs won't go away. I wouldn't really be too concerned but my memory is running low and I could use this extra space. Thanks for the help.

Try restoring your iPod, this will erase the hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. You can at least start updating again from a fresh installation which should help: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings

  • There's 90MB free on my Nano and iTunes says 15 pictures won't fit.

When is Apple going to fix this bug? I have 90MB free on my Nano and iTunes says it can't fit 15 pictures on it. If I remove all the songs and then add the pictures, they take up a WHOPPING 18k of space on the Nano. Why does iTunes think that 18 KILOBYTES won't fit into 90 MEGABYTES of space?
    Please Apple FIX THIS!

"What does the nano report in the settings/about menu?"
    90MB free. I understand the 2GB doesn't equal 2GB thing.
iTunes reports 90MB free on the Nano. I can fill that space with MUSIC, and have done so all the way down to a mere 250-300k left empty. But iTunes can't seem to grasp that 20k of pictures will fit into 90MB of space.
    It's a bug.

  • TS1362 My blank cd says 80 min. or 700 MB. Playlist in Itunes says 1.6 hrs., 213 MB.  It won't burn, itunes says it won't fit onto cd.  What's up with this?

I don't understand why itunes won't burn my playlist to a blank CD.  CD-R says 80 min, or 700 MB.  Playlist shows 176 MB, 25 songs, 1.3 hrs.  I don't understand why it won't fit onto one CD.

If you are burning an audio CD, use the time/length of the playlist.
If you are burning and MP3/data CD, use teh size (MB) of the playlist.
Note that there needs to be room for directories and other info on teh disc which will nto be displayed in teh size of the playlist.
The disc may hold 80 minutes but a playlist of 80 minutes will not fit.
Usually, you can get ~70 minutes max.

  • Certain songs won't transfer to iPod

Ok, this is bugging the crap outta me.
A few days ago, my iPod Classic kinda went on the fritz. For some reason, the sound became all distorted. So I tried restoring it. That didn't fix the problem. In fact, it made things worse, because after I restored it, it wouldn't update properly. Certain songs wouldn't go, and a message would pop up that said "Attempting to copy to the disk failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." I assumed there was something wrong with my iPod, because there had already been something wrong with it. Which there was, and now it's like dead completely.
Anyway, that's not the extremely troubling part, because I had to get that iPod fixed anyway.
The really troubling part is that my dad gave me his old 4GB iPod Nano (3rd generation) to use because he just bought a new iPod Classic. So I try to put my music on this one, and guess what... same thing happens. I erase and restore it, and when I try to put my music on it, there's certain songs that won't go, and that message pops up. No matter how many times I try to put it on, it's just those certain songs that won't go. And I cannot find ANY connection between the songs that lets me know what the problem is. The files are connected just fine, the songs seem completely random... I can't find any common thing between them... bitrate, encoding, length... nothing. And there's nothing distinguishing most of them from the songs that transfer just fine. They're all MP3s. They all play just fine in iTunes, but won't transfer to the iPod.
I'm getting the feeling there's some kind of bug with iTunes 8, because that's the only thing I can think of that changed recently that might be causing this.
Anybody have any answers? I'm desperate.

I've been having the same problem recently- after we downloaded Itunes 8, around the same time we got the new Leopard software, most songs won't sync to my Ipod 3rd gen. And, of course, most of those songs are my favorites.
Have you gotten the answer to this??

So I looked up the info on OWC as suggested and found the correct memory to upgrade but not sure how much to get and which option? I wanted to know how much space I have available to upgrade so I don't buy something that's more than what can be used. I'm not sure if I need 4GB or 8GB of ram? Also there are two options with every memory choice for instance:
    8.0GB PC3-10600 1333MHZ SO Kit (4GB + 4GB) w/Lifetime Limited Warranty
    Same Day
    $78.79
    8.0GB PC3-10600 SO-DIMM 204 Pin w/Lifetime Limited Warranty
    Same Day
    $82.79
Not sure what the difference is in the two and which I would need to purchase? Thank you for all your help!

After you move the library you need to open iTunes by first depressing the OPTION key then launching iTunes. You will be given a choice of which library to use. This can then be made a permanent change, if you wish, in the Advanced section of iTunes preferences.

What you need to do is boot into Safe Mode. Then delete the VGA Drivers.
After that boot normally and install the latest nVidia ForceWare Drivers

Like I said, I bought one of their inexpensive enclosures and now can use the hard drive just as a source for the files that are on it...my external drives are much larger and faster so I just plug that drive in when I need something from it.
