Plex and media server

I have a few questions. Please give me some guidance I'm 50 years old. I have a new Mac mini and an apple iPad Air . I'm using my iPad as the keyboard and mouse for the mini hooked up to the tv as a monitor. What I need is a step by step, set up from you guys out there! Now I know y'all are out there! Please keep it simple. But what I want to do is use my Mac mini as a server as simply as possible and really don't care if I have to buy the apps or programs. I'm using romote and logmein to use my Mac mini remotely. They are a  little shaky, both apps will not wake up the Mac mini! Please a little help on this also. I know this is a lot of info, but I've been with apple since 2007 and have read many post through the years and y'all have been great! Thanks!

Meg is right - you may be better off posting this question in the Mac Mini forum.
You will want a wireless mouse & keyboard that you can use from time to time - that will make your life much easier with this endeavor. You can use your iPad for many things, but there will be occasions when a mouse and/or keyboard will better suit your needs.
I've played around with using my iMac as a media server, and I've had some success.
For starters, I moved most of my movies into XBMC - similar to Plex, but I preferred the setup for XBMC. There's a free remote app for iPad and iPhone that is fairly easy to set up. XBMC itself is free also. Whether that's an option for you or not depends on the type of content you have. If you have a lot of purchases in iTunes, it does look like you can add those in to XBMC. I'd have to play with it myself in order to offer much help, though!
In addition to XBMC, I purchased Actions for iPad, which is $3.99+tax. Actions allows you to control the volume on your Mac, along with allowing you to open applications, close applications, control audio, shut down your Mac, etc.
With Actions, I'm able to do things like open XBMC, iTunes, etc, without needing a mouse or keyboard.
If you'd like an app that just functions as a wireless mouse, check out Remote Mouse. I've used it myself and it seemed to work fine, though a wireless mouse is a bit easier to use!
Not sure about the waking from sleep issue - you may just have to leave it running, or press the power button once to wake it up. If you connect it to your router via Ethernet (rather than wirelessly), you may be able to take advantage of the Wake on LAN feature of OS X. You could also put the Mini on a schedule so it is asleep overnight and/or during the day (assuming you're gone for a certain amount of time each day) and wakes up when you're home.
Hopefully some of this was helpful...if you need/want further detail, please feel free to ask!

  • EA4500 router and media server file limit

I purchased an EA4500 router yesterday and it arrived today. Set it up, copiued my media library over to a new Seagate Expansion drive (2 TB) and it currently is filled with 320GB of files. Music folder, Pictures folder and Video folder. Thing is only some of the files are showing up. Looks very much like some stupid limitation on file numbers. I specifically purchased this router because of the media server and now it is useless.
Is there a fix for this sillyness? I can't seem to find a way to turn the file limit off. I truly hope I haven't purchased another rubbish router. The TP Link router I replaced had no such file size limit and was 2/3 of the price, easily.
    Yours, not amused

Yes, I checked that before I bought myself a Seagate Expansion drive 2TB. The router list shows 1.5 and 3TB drives in that range and I would say that the 2TB is veyr likely to be supported also.
The files are bog standard file types! Some files show up but not all of them.
FLAC (you missed that filetype off the supported audio types btw) and MP3 show up but not all of them.
MPEG2 files show and play..but not all are visible.
None of my images in my photo library show up and they are all JPEG. No esoteric file formats.
It seems though that the media server just doesn't show anything after it reaches a file limit. It really isn't up to anything much if that is the case and for the money that router should be better. Furthermore, the folders with audio albums in doesn't display the contects in the correct alphanumeric order. I was playing an album by Cassandra Wilson and immediately noticed that the songs were in the wrong order. Something totall wrong there...the server has to be displaying them like that.
I have Marantz CR603 all-in-one hif fis in 3 different rooms in the house (living room and two bedrooms). Sometimes 2 can connect simultatenously but 3 won't as the server falls over. Even with two units connected it will suddenly disconnect for no reason. My connection isn't slow It is fast anbd yet accessing the media server is very very slow and especially simultatenous access.
It seems to me that the media server element is a stripped down token effort but all the sales garb for the router doesn't mention aything about its silly limitations.
I think the best thing for me to do now is return this to Amazon for a full refund and find another brand of router.  It was bad enough 'adjusting' to the cloud managment - a firmware download initiated on install and installed that. Some of the config pages don't work properly (that needs an urgent fix as well...IP address fields with only 3 fields that won't allow you to enter last 3 octets of address and you can't apply setting) and the dumbned down way of presentating the options makes it a pain to setup if you are used to the usual way of setting up a router. If I setup a router manually it takes a fraction of the time that the hand holding setup nonsense takes. I get the idea, and it looks pretty and all big buttony how everyhting is going these days but there should be a seriously 'normal' advanced mode for people that don't require their hands held through the setup and configuration.
Very dissappointed. It's a fast router as well.

  • E3000 external storage and media server problem

I have connected my LaCie rugged drive to the router and would like to use it as backup storage and as a way to stream video to my PS3.
When I go to my advanced settings for the router and go to the storage heading I can see my LaCie and its specifications.  There is a button next to it that says "claim", which I press, but nothing happens.
I don't have the option to create a shared folder, and I can't access the drive from my Mac.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here?
On a somewhat related note, I've enabled the media server and can find it on my PS3, but there is nothing in the root folders.  How do I put stuff (movies, music, etc.) into these root folders?

Thanks, that did help.  I attached a different drive to the router and was then able to create a shared folder.
I can now see the shared folder on my Mac.  I open this folder and there's the icon with my network name.  I double click on the network name and I get a popup with the following message:  "Select the SMB/CIFS shared volume you want to connect to." and then a drop down box with the name of the shared folder I created and a public folder.  I select the shared drive I created and click OK.
I then get another popup with the following message:
    SMB/CIFS File System Authentication
Enter the workgroup or domain and your user name and password to access the server.
Already filled out in the Workgroup or Domain is the name of one of the folders I created on the share drive.  Under username is my name and password is blank.  I enter in the password for the network and click OK.
I then get the following message: The alis "'my network name'" could not be opened because it could not be found.
and then the message gives me the following options:
    Delete Alias
    Fix Alias
    OK
It won't let me delete the alias
I've tried fixing the alias, but when I click on the option to do this, it just takes me to my file folder structure and asks me to choose a file.  I'm not sure what I should do here.
Any idea on what to do so I can access the shared folder I created?
Also, on our other computer which runs windows I'm not sure how to create a root folder.  How do I do this?

  • Various network setups for media serving and backups

Are there any good sites, blog posts, etc that show different home network configurations with a Time Capsule, external HDs and Macs for handling backups and media serving? Right now I have a simple Setup where my TC backs up my MBP. I also have a couple externals HDs w a lot of music and video that's not in my iTunes library on the MBP, the HD of which is at capacity. I know I want to be able to easily access all of that content on my MBP, AppleTV, iPhone, iPad. I also want to have a good backup solution (possibly even a backup of the backup for redundancy). I just don't know the simplest way to do it and haven't found a good resource to see the alternatives and/or pros/cons of different configurations. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • Tip: Elgato EyeTV, Plex, and Mountain Lion

I'm contributing this as a tip to the community. Hopefully others will find it useful.
Let me set the scene first... I use EyeTV on a couple of my Macs, including my Mac Mini acting as a media centre (HTPC). Historically EyeTV integrated with Apple's Front Row, but as we all know, Apple killed off Front Row on the Mac a while back. Now I liked Front Row's simplicity, and I liked EyeTV's integration. After the demise of Front Row, it took me a while but I converted over to using Plex (Plexapp and Media Server). It took a bit of effort on my part, but I now really like Plex too.
I primarily watch TV on the Mac Mini in full screen, so I like to use the (white) Apple Remote to interact. My use case is Apple Remote - to drive EyeTV - press-hold the menu button to switch to Plex - watch/listen media using Plex -  Quit Plex to return to EyeTV.
EyeTV still retains the integration with Front Row. When using EyeTV, press-hold the menu key and EyeTV will try to launch /Applications/Front Row. Front Row is no longer available, but I now launch Plex instead.
I achieve this by using an Apple Script application, saved to /Applications, called Front Row. That's right, I fake Front Row using an Apple Script, it simply launches or brings Plex to the front.
Now each major release of MacOSX recently has caused me to alter my Applescript a bit. I recently upgraded from Lion 10.7.x to Mountain Lion 10.8.x, and true to form I had to revisit the Applescript. Purely empirically, I believe ML changed the behaviour of EyeTV on switching.
With previous versions of MacOSX you could see EyeTV switch by taking itself out of fullscreen mode, stop playing, then launching Front Row/Plex. With ML, EyeTV appears to remain in fullscreen mode and continues playing.
This appears to be causing an issue with "ownership" of the Apple Remote events. Plex was not receiving the Apple Remote events, instead the standard MacOSX overlays (volume up/down), iTunes (play/stop/ffwd/rev) interaction was occuring. It took a bit of a leap, but I figured this was due to EyeTV remaining in fullscreen mode and retaining first responser ownership. Since EyeTV was not the foreground application, I assume it simply bubbled the events up to the OS, bypassing Plex. Also, depending on your EyeTV audio preferences (play audio in background), you will still hear EyeTV.
My solution then was to alter my Applescript. My Applescript takes EyeTV out of fullscreen mode (seems to fix the Apple Remote issue), stops the play window, then launches Plex, waits until Plex stops running, and then reverses the EyeTV commands, start playing, jump to Live, enter fullscreen
Here's my Applescript, you may copy it and use it freely, but I offer no support nor warranty whatsoever. If it works for you great, if it doesn't sorry about that but you'll have to figure it out yourself.
-------- copy the lines below -----------
    try
    tell application "EyeTV"
    if it is running then
    stop
    exit full screen
    end if
    end tell
    tell application "Plex"
    run
    activate
    end tell
repeat until application "Plex" is not running
    delay 1
    end repeat
    tell application "EyeTV"
    if it is running then
    enter full screen
    play
    jump 0 from ending
    end if
    end tell
    on error
say "Could not start Plex. Sorry"
    end try
---------- finish copying the line above ----------
We are going to be saving the file to the Applications folder, so you will need an admin account to do this...
Start Applescript Editor (find it in /Applications/Utilities)
Copy and paste the lines above
Hit the Compile (hammer icon) button. This will tell you if everything is okay.
Now, from the File menu, choose Save As...
Call it Front Row, navigate to the Applications folder, and set the file format to Application, click the Save button.
    Test it from EyeTV.
    I hope this helps...
    My versions
    EyeTV 3.6 (build 7031)
    Plexapp 0.9.5.2
    Plexapp Settings of note:
Preferences > System > Input Devices
    Standard
Always Running is off (this stops Plexhelper from continually running, seems to help with Apple Remote events)
Preferences > System > Video Hardware
    Display Mode is full screen

    Hello Paul,
thanks for the vote. Yes I had to change the script slightly too. Here's my current version:
    try
              tell application "EyeTV"
                        if it is running then
                             exit full screen
                             stop
                        end if
              end tell
    on error
say "Something went wrong stopping Eye TV"
    end try
    try
              tell application "Plex"
                        run
repeat until application "Plex" is running
                                  delay 1
                        end repeat
                        activate
              end tell
    on error
say "Something went wrong starting Plex"
    end try
    try
repeat until application "Plex" is not running
                     delay 1
              end repeat
    on error
say "Something went wrong whilst waiting"
    end try
    try
              tell application "EyeTV"
                        if it is running then
                               enter full screen
                               play
                               jump to 1 from ending
                        end if
              end tell
    on error
say "Something went wrong restarting Eye TV"
    end try
I hope that works for you (it's working for me )
I did log a fault with Elgato along with a development request for them to allow the switch to any selected application (not hard coded /Applications/Front Row). I just got the standard "Thank you, we'll think about it" reply.
I don't think EyeTV is currently top of Elgato's priority list at the moment (sigh!). They've been very quite for years now. For example, there's no real additions to the hardware compatablility list (excluding their own hardware). I've been asking them to support DVB-T2 format broadcasts and devices for over 2 years, still nothing, I guess Europe and Scandinavia combined are small markets and not worth the effort.
Don't get me wrong, EyeTV is a great product, but development activity appears to have slowed.

  • Setup a home file/Media server with no internet access

    Hi,
I have a home network with a wifi router connected to an Adsl modem. I try to setup a new server (macbook pro with Yosemite as OS) which will be only used as file and media server for my local network.
I DO NOT want this server to have access to out of my local network and no one out of my local network could access it. in other words, it has to be isolated as a local server with no incoming/outgoing access from out of my local network.
I should mention that this server can be accessed by other family members and they can setup other applications without my awareness... and I do not want to manually deny each access request (in or out) in the server's firewall and I am not always behind the server. I want to be sure that "all access" from/to out of my local network are denied.
my local network dhcp rang is 192.168.10.10 to 192.168.10.20 and I have a firewall on the router and one on this server (little snitch).
I have no idea how to do this, how to configure IPs out of my local network in the firewalls etc...
I would appreciate if anyone can help me (I have a limited knowledge about networking)
    Many thanks
    Bye

    Thanks for your reply ChuckBing.
Unfortunately I had already copied the instructions I found in the Sun documentaion to the letter and it still needed access to the internet. In the end I solved the problem by pointing the iepluginurl to a non existent file and putting a URL, pointing to an offline JRE executable on the server, as the message that appears when the applet cannot be loaded. The clients then have the choice of downloading the JRE or installing it online by clicking on the URL.
    Thanks anyway.

  • 0x80070643 Fatal Error During Installation of PLEX Media Server Setup

    Hi,
I had gotten a rather pesky virus and was finally able to flush it out thanks to Malware Bytes.  However, now nothing will install.
Currently, I'm trying to install Plex Media Server, and I get the "0x80070643 Fatal Error During Install".
What can I do to undo this damage and get things to download smoothly again?

    Hi,
Make sure you have turned on Windows Firewall:
    1. Click the Start button. In the search box, type Windows Firewall, and then, in the list of results, click
    Windows Firewall.
    2. In the navigation pane, click Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
    3. For each group of settings shown, select Turn on Windows Firewall, and then click
    OK.
After that, download and install again. If the issue still persists, try to run
sfc /scannow command to repair the system for test:
Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

  • Set up a media server and backup

I hope I picked the best community for maximum exposure to this set of questions:
I want to build a video distribution system.  I have teh ability to send audio throughout the house and HD video via 2 CAT 6 in every room.  From my research and being an Apple fan this is what I am thinking about doing.  I am considering not using the CAT 6 for video and using wired or wireless connections at one of several locations to get video and other media.
Here is what I have:  Airport Express (extender mode), Aiport Extreme, Netgear Gigabit switch feeding the wired locations.  I have some older WD MyBooks connected via the network and a USB 500GB drive connected to the Airport Extreme for Time Machine backups - of just my MBP, not my wife's MBP.
    1.  Should I buy a Mac Mini to act as the media server for the house?  I suspect I could have 4-5 locations at once demanding media via Apple TV or xBox 360 (via connect 360).  I would like to not buy more than 1 Mac mini.  I have considered stuff by Request Media and they are really expensive compared to the cost of one or even two mac minis.
    2.  I want to have all of the media stored on a RAID 1 network attached drive (or Firewire, Thunderbolt, USB 3.0 whatever).  I also want to be able to backup the computers in the house to this storage too.  Possible?  Lacie seems to have a good product, but, pricey.
    3.  I suppose I could put a large hard drive in the Mac Mini and store all the media there and use the RAID 1 system to back up all computers somehow.  It seems Time Machine freaks out when more than one computer backs up to the same drive.   Is there a better way than Time Machine?
In essence I want to put together a system that supports media distribution via multiple streams via wired or wireless network connections to 3-4 locations simultaneously, backup everything, and store everything video and audio and I am looking for recommendations.
    Thanks many!

As previously stated, iTunes libraries cannot be accessed
simultaneously by to different computers.  This would pretty
much rule out having an Apple TV and other Mac(s) using
the same iTunes library at the same time.  Unfortunately,
Apple TV needs iTunes for any local network streaming.
However, ther are other ATV type devices out there that can
access files directly on any network storage.
There are also other media apps (PLEX, XBMC,etc.) that
can simply be set up to link to network storage systems.
Personally, I am using XBMC on my Macs and all are
linked to media files that are located on HDD attached to
    my Airport Extreme Base Station.

There are various options here.  Something to consider, is
    LaCie's Thunderbolt to SATA adapter:
    http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?id=10574.
You could then get one of OWC's RAID enclosures w/ SATA
interface and roll your own storage.  Advantages of this approach
    1.  The RAIDs will be hardware RAID.
    2.  You could have two independed RAID systems attached
          for various reasons or puposes.
    3.  Higher speed disk interface vs. USB3.
    4.  You can also install highest speed HDD's available if
          desired.
    5.  If a a single disk drive goes belly-up, replacement is fast
          and easy.
    6.  Also, upgrading to larger drives is a matter of just swapping
         the HDD itself.
    3.  I suppose I could put a large hard drive in the Mac Mini and store all the media there and use the RAID 1 system to back up all computers somehow.  It seems Time Machine freaks out when more than one computer backs up to the same drive.   Is there a better way than Time Machine?
With this sort of system, I would avoid putting data inside
and libraries inside the Mini.  Should the HDD fail, your whole system
and data will be down.  I would suggest get a Mini with a single
SSD drive with OSX and install Server on it.  Being solid state,
it will in the long run be more reliable than a mechanical HDD.
Then put all data and libraries on external storage.  If any of
the data/library drives fail, repair/replacement will be quick
    and simple.
For your purpose, you don't need to by the "Server" model.
Just get either the base or next one up and just install the
    server app on it.

  • Please add Plex Media Server support in addition to Twonky Server

Please add Plex Media Server support in addition to Twonky Server Plex has:- better client UI- organized information and better use of online meta-data WD MyCloud has the hardware necessary to run a Plex Media Server

I agree without plex the WD EX4 is just another storage device. I'm looking for something that will allow me to stream the content in a great looking UI and simplify things for my family. Plex support is needed if you expect to compete with Synology etc. Had I known PLEX was not supported I would of certainly went another route. I do appreeciate the WD EX 4 and not had as many issues as others with the device but PLEX support is basicly a requirment for new devices and it is a shame is not supported by WD EX 4.

  • Plex Media Server Access Via Closed Port

    Hey All,
I'm running Plex Media Server on my home server (running Arch of course) and am curious how it is able to run and be accessed on port 25244 when both my router and iptables config do not have this port opened? I can access the server via port 32400, but if I go into the app settings and connect it to a myPlex account, it allows the server to be mapped to 25244.
    Thanks in advance!
    - James

    Hi dlw,
Thanks for the reply.  I have installed plex server on my home PC (which I was going to use as the server pc - a windowns 7 - 64bit) and then install plex on my ipad so that I can watch films and listen to music held on my PC.
I've installed the lastest versions of silverlight and flash and also installed the plex server software.  However, when I right click on the tray icom and select media manager it tries to open http://www.localhost.com:32400/manage/ in firefox but keeps getting timed out.
Haven't got a clue why or how to resolve it, but slowly trying me insane.

  • I have partitioned my time capsule, but I can't get it to work as a Time Machine back up and permanent media server for both mac and PC. What format do I need to partition the drive to so that it works for both mac and windows and so that it will be visab

I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
    Thanks

You are mixing up a couple of things here.
The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC.

  • Questions on the capabilities of the Adobe media server and system requirements

    Hello
We need to send multiple video streams on different computers and screens in our organization. To do this, we need a dedicated server with the following functionality:
    - transmit up to ten (or even more) HD and FullHD streams simultaneously
    - manage playlists in real time without relaunching stream every time after adding items to the playlist
    - imposing of any text and video effects
    - use a variety of sources: a folder with pictures for the slideshow, video and audio files, video capture devices, video streaming from other resources
Is Adobe media server suitable for our tasks?
What are the system requirements (I do not mean minimum requierements)?
If we buy adobe media server, will it be enough? Or we will have to buy additional software products to provide all the necessary functionality?
    Thank you.

    1 and 2 is possible
    3 is not
4 AMS is not an encoder and does not encode or create streams. You have to use other software for that.Adobe FMLE is for live streaming...Use third part software like manycam(a virtual webcam on your machine) to generate video sources out of slide shows.
