.plist missing/disappeared

Hello All. I have ARD 3.2.2 Unlimited installed on my MBP and one of my Xserves (10.5.5) at school. Today I am home recovering from surgery and trying to manage a couple of issues on one of my lab machines. I connected to my Xserve and launched the ARD 3 (same version) but nothing happened. Not a beachball, just a blue dot under the app icon, but nothing else. After a few of those retries, I checked my prefs folder and I find a single RemoteDesktopAgent.plist. I checked the prefs folder on my MBPro (which has essentially the exact set of info as my ARD on my Xserve) and I see three .plists (RemoteDesktopAgent.plist, RemoteDesktop.plist, and RemoteDesktop.plist.LessTechBkup). Can these be "moved" to the Preferences on to the Xserve from home or would anyone venture a quick way to get back up and working again. I can't get to school to reinstall the software for a few days, but I am hoping to be able to manage from home if possible) My servers and machines are all behind my ASA 550 and I don't manage the appliance myself so I'm only able to manage thee machines via the ARD app via the ARD on my Xserve. I know, I need a better way to do this, but it has been enough for me so far. Thanks so much.

Holy smokes. We should try this back from the beginning. Yes, you can copy the preference files from your MBP to the XServe without any problems.
If the firewall allows, just do a Copy Files from your machine and choose the 3 preference files on your computer. Then on the Copy Items window, tell it to "Place items in" for those 3 files to "Same Relative Location".
If you aren't able to copy through ARD, do you have any sharepoints on that server that you can connect to and copy the files onto the server. Then drag and drop them into the folders they belong.
Even though you don't see a spinning beachball doesn't mean its not there. Seems like through ARD, you will rarely, if ever, see a spinning beachball. Usually it just shows the arrow cursor.
If the preferences don't fix it, just say. Maybe something in your system.log will say why the application is hanging up.

  • Safari plist missing

i havent been able to change my browsers font, so looking for a solution online i noticed that my safari plist is missing. What can i do to solve this issue? its driving me nuts and i have no clue of what else to do. Please help. THANX

There are two libraries.  One is root  /Library    The other is User  ~/Library
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar top of your screen click Go > Go to Folder
    Type or copy/paste:    ~/Library/Preferences
    Click Go
You'll find the com.apple.Safari.plist file in the Preferences folder.
Access User  ~/Library  folder in Lion and Mountain Lion
Trying to change the Safari font can cause such issues as Safari freezing and crashing.

  • MacBookPro9_2.plist missing?

After the Yosemite update I noticed that my computer (MacBookPro9,2) started running slower and hotter, and noticed that any fan sensor I tried displayed 0RPM, even though it seemed fixed at around 2200~ (default) and did not increase to match the temperature like it did before. Because of this my kernel_task would act up and sometimes spike to around 360%+ of CPU usage. After much digging around, I looked into the kext files and plugin families associated with the issue and realized that my model isn't listed in the resources folder? Is the missing .plist the reason why my computer spikes to deathly slow performance?

Not likely. But I do suggest that you do this:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • AppleHIDmouse.plist missing from out-of-box installation. Right click on mouse not working

    Hello all!
I have several MBPs that I help manage. Some of our users state their (wired) Apple Mouse does not right click even after setting it in preferences.
When we looked at those computers more closely, they are missing the AppleHIDmouse.plist file in /System/Library/LoginPlugins/BezelServices.loginPlugin/Contents/Plugins directory. While other computers have it included and right clicking works with no intervention on our part.
Does anyone know what would cause an out-of-box installation of OS X to miss that file? We copied it from a working computer and placed it into the directory on the machines showing the symptoms and their right button works now. But I'd still like some input from the community for our future deployments.
    Technical Details:
The MBPs showing symptoms are 15"-17" with a mix of 8 and 16 GB models.
We tested OS X 10.7.4, 10.7.5, and 10.7.4 w/ Combo Update. All installed as fresh installs. File was still missing D:
    Thank you in advance!

  • IPhoto crashes and com.apple.iPhoto.plist MISSING

I imported a rather large jpeg file into iPhoto and during the import, the application crashed.  Now the program will open momentarily, but continuously shuts down after a few seconds.  I have already tried every one of the 4 repair options when you start the program by holding down option and command.  I've tried them repeatedly, no luck.  I deleted the problem causing file completely from my computer, except that I could only get the iPhoto copy into iPhoto's trash.  The program won't stay open long enough for me to empty that trash.  Then I tried all the repair options again.  Still no luck.
I have read that you're next supposed to delete the preferences list.  However, I seem to not have this file anywhere on my hard drive.  I have gone to Users > ME > and then there is NO LIBRARY FOLDER.  So, next I tried Users > Library > Preferences > and then there is every plist file in there EXCEPT for the iPhoto one.  This is driving me crazy!  This is the first time I have ever gone browsing into my system files, so I know I didn't accidentally delete anything prior to this problem starting.  Please help!

Btw, I'm have an iMac and am using OS Lion 10.7.5 and I assume I have iPhoto '11.

  • Missing/Disappearing Files

I had some of my .NEF photo files highlighted and something happened to where over 100 of them disappeared (even images that were not highlighted). They are not in the trash. I searched some of the specific file names and they are not showing up in the Finder search engine. I tried to view files opened & modified today in Finder [to see if they had somehow saved under another file name] and they are not showing up there either.
It appears my laptop does not even recognize that they even existed.
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated in regards to file recovery. [iPhoto & Time Machine have not been used]

If you maintain a backup, and review the proposed changes therein before each update, then you would be able to recover if this happens. Personally I have my iTunes library cloned over three drives and I have yet to see a file vanish that I didn't explicity delete from my library.

  • Com.apple.safari.plist missing in preferences folder

    Hey everybody,
my safari has become unusably slow. I checked for solutions and found out I should delete the com.apple.safari.plist. So I browsed my preferences folder in the library for the file and could not find it. I checked my whole Library for any Safari related file and there was none.
Has anyone an explanation for this? I already reinstalled the OS which didn't change a thing.
I hope anybody can help me please
I am using a mid 2012 rmbp with 8gb ram, which has become a little laggy in general since the yosemite in update

Unfortunately, deleting the com.apple.safari.plist didn't solve my original problem. Safari is still so superslow sometimes. And then its fast again. But Chrome is always faster and immediately responding. I've run a test with Etresoft:

  • 10.6.7 - Audio Settings Reset after reboot & plist missing

    Hey all,
I have a mac pro and I'm having an odd issue similar to http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10412664-263.html.
I set my settings on the sound preferences. Once I reboot the sound setting resets.  It seems to be a preferences issue and as the article states its' located here:
Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > Audio
    The files will be:
    com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
    com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
Unfortunately, I'm unable to locate these files for whatever reason they are long longer on
    Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > Audio or  <home directory> Library > Preferences > Audio.
I thought it was find i'll just move it from the new macbook pro with 10.6.7 but that computer also doesn't have these files anymore.
    Question:
    Where are these files

    SU wrote:

On my computer, those 2 plist files are right where you indicated.   Are you sure you looked in the right place?  Did you use spotlight to search?

  • Target tabs missing/disappeared

    Hi everyone,
I'm having trouble with target tracks in FCP 6.0.4
The only video target tab and 1 audio tab has disappeared. I am left with only 1 audio tab. Previously I had 1 video and 2 audio tabs. How can I restore this to proper settings? When I pressed F7 or F8 to try to target something, it won't work. Here's a picture to show an example.

    Thanks for your help!

    David,
Thanks for the reply, however, another screen capture shows nothing this time:

I loaded the audio into the viewer and no tabs appear. Any reason?

  • Launch Daemon .plist missing, won't rebuild?

My system is working fine (iMac running Mountain Lion), except that when I try to import video to iMovie '08 using the built-in iSight camera I see a message "no camera connected". iSight works fine in Skype, photobooth, etc.
The solution to this, documented here, is to trash com.apple.mio.VDCAssistant.plist at the path /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ and it's supposed to rebuild after a restart. But when I navigate to this path, the relevant file is just not there. Restart doesn't affect it, neither does logging in with a different user account. Repairing disk permissions doesn't help. I found a file named com.apple.cmio.VDCAssistant.plist at that location but only in a Time Machine backup - it's not there on my current system.
My main question is: does the absence of com.apple.mio.VDCAssistant.plist indicate a deeper problem that ought to be fixed? If not, I can live with not being able to import video directly to iMovie directly from the camera.
If it does indicate a deeper problem, I guess it's time to reinstall the OS. If that's the case, can I restore the system from a time machine backup or will this just reintroduce the original problem?
Thanks for reading - I'd really appreciate any input.

Update: Reinstalled the OS and the 'cmio' file is now there, though doesn't rebuild when moved. iSight still not recognised. The iSight issue must be a bug confined to older versions of iMovie, even though they're still supported by Mountain Lion. I'll use QuickTime to import the footage.

  • Missing/Disappearing Registration Points in Flash CS5 Master Suite

When I create a new symbol Flash allows me to pick and choose my registration points inside the symbol and functions normally. However when I choose the same symbol or an already created symbol, I am no longer able to change the registration point. Is this a legit glitch in the program or is there something about flash I am unaware of? This happens everytime I start up flash.

    Hi Mike,
CS5 has not been tested on Windows 8 and it's not mentioned in the system requirements, but you can give it a try.
    Refer : http://www.adobe.com/store/en_us/popup/software/creativesuite/mastercollection5/systemreqs .html
Please keep both the download files in one folder and run the .exe file. Let me know if that helps.

  • Mail disappeared at all

My mail account has disappeared at all. Everything was working fine, but suddenly the system stop working and asks for a restart.
After restarting and clicking on Mail, it asks me to set up a mailbox, as if for the first time.
    Anybody could help? Thanks....

Same thing has happened to me. Turns out the Info.plist file (User/Library/Mail/POPaccount/Info.plist) just disappeared for seeming no reason. I replaced it from my backup drive and it worked again. Then, after a Time Machine backup, the files in the Messages folder (in my POP account folder) disappeared too. In Mail, the headers are still there, but the content of the messages is gone. Could this be a virus?
(BTW, I'm surprised no else has responded to this thread. Doesn't anyone at Apple read these? Or de we have drag our desktops into the Apple Store for a "genius" to look at them?)

  • Airport not available on MacBook Pro 15 unibody mid 2009, PLEASE HELP!!!!

Ok, so I just recently put in a new hard drive and battery by myself, since my original MacBook Pro hard drive became "corrupted" most likely due to a parallel desktop software I was using. Anyway so I finally install everything on the new hard drive and airport is not working. The icon is NOT EVEN THERE on the menu bar. I go into Network and the only thing I've got is Ethernet and Firewall. I've tried the "+" thing, and it didn't work. I then went into "Assist Me" , then "Diagnostics" and the airport option is greyed out, so is the external modem. Oh, and the operating system is Snow Leopard  OS X 10.6.3. Has a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor.
I also deleted the "SystemConfiguration" Folder and found something interesting. The "com.apple.airport.preferences.plist" was never there and when I reboot, the "com.apple.network.identification.plist" also disappeared. I had to drag it back into the folder from the desktop where I put a copy just in case something weird happened, which it did.
I checked System Profiler, clicked on AirPort and it gives me stuff under "Software Versions", so I'm guessing it's acknowledging that THERE IS a card and can give me all the information for it, but I can't get the mac to use it. I reset the PRAM AND SMC and still nothin.
So, I figured it must be hardware, right? So I open the mac like i did when I installed the new hard drive and battery, and I CANNOT FIND THE DARN AIRPORT CARD. On the mid 2010 models it's with the bluetooth card at the top and I've tried looking online for ANYONE, who has tried to get to the airport card on the mid 2009 model for the MacBook Pro 15 unibody. And found nothing. I think it's in the clutch, but I'm too scared to touch that area. Does anyone else have any ideas or have I covered all my bases?
I REALLY DO NOT want to go to Apple. I don't have AppleCare and don't have the money to have them poke around and tell me the same thing I already know. And I spent way too much on this computer to not be able to use it to full capacity. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
