Pls. help! iPhoto freezes (after duplicate/import/ext. edit)

Hi everyone,
I'm so frustrated. Every time I either duplicate a photo, edit in external editor, or actually after every single import from the digital camera (I use a card reader, but the camera is EOS 20D for completeness) iPhoto stops responding, freezes, I get the spinning ball. I mean, I went to Macs because I was fed up wasting so much time just getting things to work, and now this? :''-(
I've tried repairing permissions, cron scripts, deleting the iPhoto prefs file and it still happens. BTW, for the technical ones around you, if I restart iPhoto after I have to force quit, the duplicated photo is there. Just like the import goes through. Just at the end it hangs itself. Also to my bewilderment, duplicating an already duplicated photo (by clicking on the duplicate) the iPhoto will not freeze exceptionally. Oh, and I also tried manual permissions (RW for me AND the group), plus I AM the admin and the only user account on this mac ever since it was new.
Please help. I already upgraded from 5.0.3 to 5.0.4 and no change (luckily it didn't get worse, heh). My library is 5 Gigs of mostly 8megapixel RAWs, TIFFs, and JPEGs.
Thank you!

Hi amanda,
for now, use Image Capture to import your images.
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.
You can also try to delete the iPhoto preference file called com.Apple.iPhoto.plist. Here is a screenshot of where it is.
Preference file
Then you can download and use Onyx to clean out all caches.
OnyX
-I want you to check the permissions on your iPhoto Library folder and make sure they are Read/write for you. In the same window go all the way to the bottom and check the box.
Get info on the iPhoto Library folder
iPhoto Library Info
For good measure, you can open Disk Utility which is found in your Utilities folder and repair permissions.

  • IPhoto freezes after 46 photos exported

I Photo freezes after 46 photos.  I have tried by eliminating photos and moving them around but it still freezes.  I am trying to export an album of photos to burn to a  CD and it just won't work.
It exports the first 46 then tells me it cannot export the photo which would be 47.  But that should not be the case, since #47 is not the same photo when i go back after moving them around and deleting some.

Where are you exporting to and how much free space do you have on your boot drive.  A test you can run is to  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import more than 47 photos  and check to see if the same problem persists.
If it doesn't then the problem lies with your current library.
If it does then it could be an application issue, user account issue or system issue.
    Report back with the results.

  • Help: Macbook freezes after sleep and gray screen freeze on startup

I've got a new MacBook (45 days old, minimal usage) and I'm starting to have some problems.
When my computer goes to sleep after inactivity I have a hard time waking it. The screen turns on right away but the mouse/cursor remains frozen. The computer does not respond to any keyboard commands. I usually have to reboot the machine when this happens. I noticed this problem a few weeks ago and it has since become more and more frequent.
I've also noticed that with some regularity my computer freezes on the gray screen during start up and never reaches the mac icon. This has become more and more frequent since I first noticed the initial problem and happens one in every 3 or 4 startups.
I haven't installed any new software except for the regular software upgrades. Nothing extraordinary.
Is it possible that these problems are related? Am I doing something wrong?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The grey screen on startup may be the known issue, especially if you start to get vertical lines on the screen. If you can reboot using PRAM reset, go to the displays control panel, set the resolution to something besides your current resolution, then revert to your original setting. That should fix that part.
As far as the freezing after sleep goes, I had a similar issue where the macbook would not actually go to sleep (white light stayed solid), and opening the lid would result in a dimmed screen that I had to force-shut down the computer to get out of. After sending it in for RSD, this seems to have been resolved.

  • Why does my iPhoto freeze the whole computer when editing?

Every time I edit in iPhoto, the whole computer freezes after about a dozen adjustments of any kind. I have to manually shut down and restart as no key commands allow access to any other app or the Finder.

    Hi, Terence ~
    I'm using iPhoto '11, v. 9.1.5
with ± 5,000 photos in current iPhoto Library
    running SnowLeopard, 10.6.8 --
capacity: 750 GB; available 695 GB
    on my Mac mini >>>
      Model Identifier:          Macmini1,1
      Processor Name:          Intel Core Duo
      Processor Speed:          1.66 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          2 MB
      Memory:          2 GB
      Bus Speed:          667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MM11.0055.B08
      SMC Version (system):          1.3f4
The freezing has been happening for quite some time, since before I upgraded to Snow Leopard, before I upgraded to iPhoto '11 from iPhoto '09, before I upgraded my mac mini from a solo ore machine to a duo core with much more HD space, etc. I think it started when I first installed iPhoto '09 , but my memory fails me. I have had other events interspersed with this recurring annoyance, hoping that it would go away during one of the upgrades I mentioned. However, it persists. I have wondered about reinstalling iPhoto, but do not know if that means I will lose all my editing changes.
I do not know about any Console messages you refer to, but perhaps I am missing something. How would I find out? I do know that I am exhausted and frustrated by this. When the editing process causes the freezing, I cannot use any of the key escapes, cannot even shut down other than manually. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you for taking an interest in my dilemma.

  • Duplicates in iphoto 11 after Duplicate Annihilator used

I have photos showing up as duplicate, triplicate and quads in Recent 'Last 18 Months' of iphoto after using duplicate annihilator successfully in the main library.  How to I clean that?

In the left pane in Recent 'Last 18 Months" category when I open that up there are well over 5000 photos and movies listed and many are duplicates and triplicates.  I suspect they have been imported 2 or 3 or 4 times from the iphone or camera as the info shows the same I.D.  I always tell it not to import duplicates but it must happen.  Duplicate Annihilator cleaned up my main photo library just fine.  There were about 16000 photos originally and it whittled it down to 10,000 plus.  All duplicates were Trashed.

  • When opened, iPhoto freezes trying to import old photos from library

When I open iphoto, I get a message that says "26 photos have been found in the iphoto library that were not imported. Would you like to import them now?" When I click YES, my computer freezes and I must force quit. The only way I can open iphoto is to ignore this message. This occurs when no devices are hooked up to my computer. How can I fix this or delete these 'mystery' photos that are waiting to be imported? Help! (Please and Thanks)

quit iPhoto and in the finder right click on the iPhoto Library package, select the Show Package contents option and fine the folder names Import or Importing and drag it to your desktop - DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE within the iPhoto Library
close and restart iPhoto - you should be ok. Look inside the import folder from the finder and see if there is anything you want to save - if not trash the folder and its contents - if there are photos you want to save drag them one at a time onto the iPhoto icon or the open program - if you find one that cause,s problems trash it

  • Iphoto crashed after "successful import" but during the "finishing import" stage - i had selected to delete the imported photos on my phone...iphoto crashed after 90% of the photos had been deleted. Now i can't see any of the photos on iphoto

Hi guys, I was importing about 5000 photos from my phone onto my computer. it said the import was successful but did i want to delete or keep the photos on the original device. I opted to delete photos. The photos started to count down as they deleted and the computer said "finishing import". Once it had deleted down to about 600 photos iphoto simply disappeared, and a message popped up to say it had crashed. I opted to reopen iphoto and saw that not one of the photos had imported! Not only that but now all the photos have been deleted from my phone. I'm really upset if i've lost the last year of photos/ videos....does anyone know what has happened/ if i can recover them?
thanks so much in advance x

Not sure where you got those ideas - simply import your photos and keep the rather than deleting - then after a successful import and at least one back up cycle you can format the card if you want or you can do what I do and keep the photos moving to a new card when that one is full giving you yet another backup - if problems occurs then trouble shoot them - no need to trouble shoot if there is no problem
ad personally I find removing the card and plugging it into my card reader is faster and easier than finding the USB cable and hooking it up, turning on the camera, verifying that tty e battery is charged, etc - and it eliminates a point of failure in the USB cable  and the chance of the camera battery running out - but that is clearly a personal choice
You are overthinking this - it is simple
a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos

  • IPhoto bloat after migrating to ext drive

When we moved our Finder Get Info 170 GB iPhoto '09 library from our iMac HD to ext HDs, we noticed that if we trashed our photos and movies from our iMac HD it left 20 GB of data use in Finder. We rebuilt and recovered disk space, etc and trashed and emptied to no avail - the 20 GB was not removable from Finder even though the library was showing it was empty in the app.
Does anyone know what this bloat is and how to remove it? If it is in an empty library after trashing, it may be in all existing libraries also, making libraries bigger than necessary.
Our simple solution was to open a new library which was in fact empty by Finder showing 260 KB.

Thanks for the quick reply TD, unfortunately I didn't think about looking at the "show contents" as that would have answered part of my question before I deleted that so called empty library.
I've since looked at the current library and note that originals take up 112, modified 25, data 23, and everything else the balance.
Has anyone attempted to trash any of these folders (even "old" back-up ones) to reduce bulk or will this just crash the app and make a good day into a bad one. I do realize that messing with these files/folders may compromise the library operation so this is not normally recommended for the faint of heart or inexperienced.
In the worst case, we can just go on living with the bloat.

This sort of error is mentioned on MetaLink. It's possibly a bug with exp, and various "workarounds" can be found on the Web for the bug. You seem to be using an ancient vesion of Oracle, so why not upgrade? Meanwhile, the solutions seem to be to set RECORDLENGTH=65000 CONSTRAINTS=Y, checking that unused columns are dropped, and probably lot smore. You could try exporting/importing again, in case it was a one-off "wobbly".

  • Iphoto freezes after deleting photo

I have an issue after installing the newest version of iphoto. Everything seems to be working fine except when I attempt to delete a photo the application stops responding.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Need help with mail after the "import" please

    Hello.
I recently upgraded to 10.4. Since I did that, my copy of Entourage has been acting up, so I decided to start using Mail instead. I love it so far, but I imported all my folders and old e-mail into Mail, now it still continues to import e-mail from Entourage every time the program checks for e-mail. So, some gets put into the import file, and some of it goes into the inbox of the Mail program. I have three e-mail addresses setup in Mail, just like I did in Entourage, but it only seems to import one account. The rest seems to go into my inbox. I want that to stop, but I also want to make sure all my mail is being picked up by Mail and not Entourage. I haven't opened Entourage since I have set up Mail. What do I do to correct this. It's pretty annoying. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

you just go to file, import mailboxes and then select the program you want to have imported. i think you have to have that application opened. i don't know where the address files are stored, though. sorry about that.

  • When I start a slideshow iPhoto freezes after a few pictures

It just stops on a single frame of a video or a picture and I have to manually change the pictures or it just crashes. It started about 2 days before this newest update with Maverick. What's up with that?

    Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.
