Plug an external hard drive randomly freezes computer
I have a few hard drives, different brands, including a lacie rugged thunderbolt 1T, WD USB3 passport 1T.
When pluging in the hard drive, my Macbook Pro 15'' Retina - Mid 2012 randomly hangs, image freezes, and computer does not responds. Weird thing is, if I were listening to music, i continues playing but computer is stucked anyway.
I am on OSX 10.9.1 , I don't use any hard drive backup / security tools, neither used some os customization app, it is just plain OSX with Adobe softs and the rest is mostly sandboxed apps.
Used onyx to "clean" , but did not change anything.
I experience this issue since I updated to Mavericks, tried to do a clean install of the OS, did not change anything.
Please Apple, help me!

I just backed up my mac to an external hard drive using Time Machine. What would happen if I turn Time Machine off and then plug the external hard drive back into my computer?
What I am ultimately wanting to do is make more room on my computer by backing up all of my files onto the external hard drive and then deleting them off of my computer. However, neededing to be able to retrieve them from the external hard drive later down the road.
From what I have read and am trying to understand, is that I probably shouldn't have used time machine. I need to use the external hard drive like a basic flash drive where I can put things on and get things off without having it automatically update through time machine everytime I connect it to my computer.

Deleting them off your computer is fine....having only ONE copy is extremely BAD.

Always presume correctly that your data is priceless and takes a very long time to create and often is irreplaceable. Always presume accurately that hard drives are extremely cheap, and you have no excuse not to have multiple redundant copies of your data copied on hard drives and squirreled away several places, lockboxes, safes, fireboxes, offsite and otherwise.
Hard drives aren't prone to failure…hard drives are guaranteed to fail (the very same is true of SSD). Hard drives dont die when aged, hard drives die at any age, and peak in death when young and slowly increase in risk as they age.
Never practice at any time for any reason the false premise and unreal sense of security in thinking your data is safe on any single external hard drive. This is never the case and has proven to be the single most common horrible tragedy of data loss that exists.
Many 100s of millions of hours of lost work and data are lost each year due to this single common false security. This is an unnatural disaster that can avoid by making all data redundant and then redundant again. If you let a $60 additional redundant hard drive and 3 hours of copying stand between you and years of work, then you've made a fundamental mistake countless 1000s of people each year have come to regret. -
Touch pad stops working when I plug my external hard drive in????

I an have HP Envy 14 Spectre, it's about 6 months old and hasn't given me any trouble until now. Whenever I plug my external hard drive in the touch pad starts behaving eratically and won't respong properly, it's really bizzare and very annoying. I've looked around but I can't find anyone with a similar probem to me on the web so I'm really stumped about what to do.
Any suggestions will be apprectiated.

I am assuming you have the system UPDATED. If not, then you should make sure it IS updated with the latest TouchPad driver. Start at
Support and Drivers
Enter your information, put in the OS and Click Next -- Scroll down.
Check under Mouse and Keyboard stuff.
Is the BIOS on the latest? Probably. Do not mess with the BIOS unless there is a good reason to do so. Read the update information in your computer's driver update page -- see if the update applies to your system.
Updating the BIOS
If you decide to update your BIOS,
Disconnect all USB drives
Always run in AC power
Do not touch the system while the update is in progress
Optional: leave wireless button ON, but turn off the router (to make sure there are no interruptions)
Next, Call HP. Frankly, it could be hardware. Sounds just odd. You may has well take advantage of that warranty. See what HP says. They may have seen this before and if so, it will be in the HP database.

HP may want to have you do a Recovery on the system - that is back up all your personal data and then reinstall the Operating System. If you have Windows 8, you might get away with backing up your personal data and doing a Refresh... Will the Recovery / Refresh / Reset fix it? It may well fix it if the software is at fault. Nothing will get better if there is a hardware problem as the root cause - throwing software around doesn't fix hardware issues. You have to throw software at a problem sometimes to convince folks that the hardware is broken. Smiling.

I was wondering if I plugged it into my time capsule it would be recognised on my macbook?

HP Simplesave external hard drive crashes/freezes HP Windows 7 machine
Okay,
I have a Simplesave 500GB and an HP Windows 7 64 bit laptop.
1) On AC. When the laptop is on AC power, attaching the external hard drive will sometimes freeze the computer, and sometimes not. Windows must be rebooted. The mouse can move, but the "busy" icon shows up.
2) No AC. When the laptop is running on battery, attaching the external hard drive will always freeze/crash the computer. Mouse will move, click is not available, and computer must be rebooted.
3) Attach external before boot. When the external hard drive is attahed before booting the laptop, everything is fine.
Any ideas, anyone?

{Personal Information Removed}Guys I had the same problem on my SimpleSave and traced the issue to swapping it to three computers--a PC Laptop running XP, my laptop running Windows 7 and a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard OS. The problem is the data is available only on the Mac but not on the Windows--but still it cannot download to the hard drive. I called the Philippine HP guys and they told me to reformat the hard disk. I told them "are you crazy? They have no other solution for me. It seems that the length of time on this thread, even HP has no solution. By the way in the Philippine PC Online Forum a lot of HP SimpleSave users have had the same problem. Could it be a product defect?

When I plug my external hard drive in, my internet connection cuts out
Hi, I have found this site very helpful since buying my first mac in 2011. This is my first post.
I have noticed a new problem today while using my firewire800 external hard drive. Each time I plug it in, as soon as its recognized, my internet connection stops working. I do not lose my connection with the router, only my ability to access actual web content. When I eject the hard drive, and then pull the firewire plug out, the internet will start working again. I use the hard drive as my time machine drive, as well as storing photos etc that I don't want on my actual computer taking up memory.

IPod only shown as external hard drive in my computer

My iPod is only shown in my computer, no where else. It dosen't come up in itune and when i try to use the iPod uodater to restore it, an error comes up or it freezes. When i try to open it in my computer, it tells me it is and external hard drive but needs formatting.
Whats going on and how can i fix it

HB (iPod is a 4g with click wheel)Had the same problem with my new 60G ipod. Even had i replaced with apple.
- The solution was to buy an external USB2 hub at the cost of 20 USD.
Now it works without any problems. The USB2 hub needs to have an external powersupply and it can ge bought for around the magic 20 USD. The hub has 4 ports and can thus be used to connect other USB devices.

How do I transfer data from external hard drive to new computer
We had been using a PC with XP that had four different users and ITune libraries. It was attacked by viruses that got deep in op system and could not be fixed. We purchased a new PC with Windows 8. I had transfered the itune files by copying them from the hard drive to a external hard drive. Is there a way to transfer the files from the external hard drive to the iTunes that I just downloaded onto the new computer. I thought that it would be as easy as copying the files from the external hard drive to the iTunes file on the new computer but this did not work. If I go into iTunes and select copy file from library it will import the file just file but I really don't want to copy thousands of files one by one. However, when I try to open those files I get an error message. We have two iPads and four iPod Touches. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I found a posted answer from someone else who asked the same question and it worked. It said to copy the entire file that was saved on the external hard drive to the my music folder before ever opening ITunes that was newly installed and it worked.

External hard drives randomly marked as read only
I have a few External Hard drives (the two I care about the most are Seagate brand and fairly new). Both of them have been set up for Mac use only and never gave me any issues on my older Mac and were used frequently. I just recently got a new Mac. I hooked up my hard drives, denied the Time Machine pop-up, and copy my work onto my new computer. Though I was able to copy my work to my new computer, I couldn't move files on my external hard drive anymore nor could I add new files (back-up work) to the hard drive. Not sure if it's just the new computer or rejecting the time machine pop-up, but my external hard drives can no longer back up my work.
Anyone know what the issue is here? I browsed these forums for a bit and it seems like the common solution is to unlock it or repair the disk. Both task I am very familiar with; however, I don't get the option. There is no lock icon for me to click to unlock and repair the disk (as well as all other options in the disk utilities) is greyed out for the external hard drives. If anyone knows whats going on here, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!machumpo wrote:

What you can do is use another external drive formatted to your requirements and copy the data from your current one to it. Then do the reformat. Also if you have the space on your MBP internal drive, copy the drive data to it, format the drive and recopy the data back to the reformatted drive.
Any chance you know how my external hard drives magically changed formats?

I know it is possible connecting the external to the computer and doing the simple drag and drop but would rather just by pass connecting to the computer and use the ipod directly. On new year's eve some POS shot a .40 cal bullet through my living room window and hit my 20" 2.4 GHz iMac on the edge of the screen. -- Let me just pause to say that we're lucky we were out at a party. -- Anyway, this iMac was the hub for our media. We used it to sync/control content on our ATV, of which we had about 200 GB of music, TV, & movies (mostly purchased via iTunes). I had a Lacie hard drive connected to the iMac for storage of the iTunes Music folder (I was running 10.5...it wasn't upgraded to OS 10.6). Anyway, I didn't have the media backed-up (not using time machine), but the external hard drive wasn't damaged by the bullet. I now have the 21.5" 3.06 Ghz iMac with OS 10.6. Is there a way to get the new computer to use the content on the Lacie hard drive?

HELP: Trying to get my music from external hard drive onto *new* computer
HELP US! Our motherboard died last month, BUT we had everything on an external hard drive (YEAH!) so we've been able to download iTunes on our new laptop, but now are having trouble getting all of my music from my iTunes library into my iPod Nano. Specifically, it will not let me put any of the music I previously purchased--other songs I got from CD's came over find. I can see ALL of my music in my iTunes account, but it won't let me sync them onto my device.
Any suggestions?Choose Authorize Computer from the Store menu in iTunes, or play a purchased song on your computer.

I consider Time Capsule slow, mainly because it depends upon a wireless network for backing up. I tried it, but went back to the plug and play FW800 wired backup. Since this particular forum is for the MacBook Pro hardware, I'd suggest the following two forums to search for your answer (or ask questions):

Since you want easy, the external hard drive is about as easy as it gets. Buy. Unpack. Plug into your Mac. Format (if you don't buy a Mac formatted one, which is unnecessary). Go to System Preferences>Time Machine. Choose the disk as the time machine. Turn on. -

Just connect the drive, run Disk Utility, select the drive, and partition/erase it as required.
