Plug-based NAS and webserver devices: anyone used one?

I've been reading a bit about using 'Sheeva'-based devices for Internet-access/NAS-server use; the most commonly quoted one is the 'Pogoplug'. This seems to allow access to any attached USB HDDs from across the 'Net by diverting the access through Pogo's own web-site. Other similar devices - Tonidoplug and Sharkoon LANport seem to offer the NAS service but not the 'net access (I might be wrong on my details so please correct me).
Has anyone here used any of these either as NAS boxes or Web servers and what can you say about them, please?

A bare hard drive mechanism is self-contained and sealed, so there is no problem with it being bare. However, if you have curious cats that can walk on your desk, you may want to have the drive in an enclosure because there are more exposed connectors that a cat may want to nibble on (and possibly yank out). Actually, you still have a USB cable and power adapter cable, even if you had a case.
If you have an available the FireWire port, and a shortage of USB ports, you might as well use the FireWire port. For use with Time Machine, a less expensive FireWire 400 drive is fine, but since your iMac has a FireWire 800 port, you may want to get a drive with FireWire 800. If you get a drive with FireWire 400, you will have to spend another $10 or so for an 800 (9-pin) to 400 (6-pin) adapter.
Are the OWC enclosures that much better for simple use with time machine?
OWC offers good external drives. But any USB or FireWire drive will be fine for use with Time Machine. The mechanism inside is the more important point. I like OWC because they sell most of their enclosures empty, and I can select and buy the hard drive separately. Macally sells their cases empty as well. They seem to have a version of drive you looked at with FireWire 800.

You can put your iPhone 4 in a 4S case and it will work just fine. You shouldn't put a 4S in a 4 case (like the Otter Commuter) since the camera sensors are different.

  • TS4020 how many devices can use one icloud account

Is there a limit on to how many devices can use one icloud account

*GE TAG - Don't you just love how people in forums answer their own question rather than the one being asked.
Let me help those that have responded so far, and those still awaiting an answer.
An account for iCloud does also include log-ins for the iOS App Store / Mac App Store / iTunes Desktop Application , but an iCloud account on any device iOS / Mac / PC does not have to match the App Store / iTunes account which certainly has its account login limitations per device as has been pointed out.
What seems to be ommitted is if there is a limit to an iCloud account per X number of devices.
In my estimation there appears to be no limitation for iCloud accounts per device. I say this only with the experience of having my own iCloud account on a MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, iMac, Apple TV Gen2, Apple TV Gen3, iPhone 5S, and an iPad Mini Gen 1.
That is 7 separate devices. Never once have I been prompted about a limit when setting up my iCloud account (which constitues Contacts / Calendar / Notes / Reminders / Documents in the Cloud / Keychain / and Photo Stream and not purchased content through App / iTunes "stores" which do give such prompting upon authorizing your respective device for being able to use / sync said purchases)
I've really only come to this realizatoin upon thinking this through after reading this thread. I was actually searching for this answer myself until now. If I'm wrong I will welcome a rebutal with proof.

I bought a 3G and a 4G in Australia while working there for 3.5 years. I have since returned permanently to the USA and would like to use one of these, understanding the GSM requires using AT&T? When in Australia, I took these iphones to the Apple Store and they unlocked the 3G for me, knowing that I would be using it in the USA - but when I took it into the AT&T store in California, the iphone would not work with AT&T's SIM card.    May I unlock the 3G and/or 4G somewhere in the USA with Apple's blessing?

If your phones were unlocked by your carrier, they should work with AT&T SIM cards.  You'll have to sign up for an iPhone phone and data plan with AT&T, but the SIM should definitely work.  Go to an AT&T store and have them set up your account and activate your SIM there.
AT&T will NOT be able to unlock your Australia-purchased phones.

  • Firefox Hello won't allow me to select which video and audio devices to use when I start a conversation instance.

As per the title. If I ACCEPT a call, or start a conversation I have no choice about which devices are used (video and audio), Firefox seems to just arbitraily decide which to use without asking me. If I make a call or join a conversation it's different, I get a dialog asking me which devices I want to use. Similarly, there's no options to edit the conversation settings to select the device.
I tried just entering the conversation URL into a browser tab, which does give me the dialog, but I cannot join the conversation as it says there are already two people in it.
    How to fix this?
    Cheers

Update: This just seems to be an oversight. Devs, You have to realize that conversation starters and call answerers still need the ability to select their devices. I know WebRTC and Hello is all still beta, but this seems to be something that should have been realized from the very start.
Are you also aware that the code examples on MDC don't actually work in Firefox, but do work in Chrome? Again, I know you say the API docs are in need of update, but for example source to actually nor work on the browser you develop and it working on a browser you do not seems a trifle ridiculous. If you want this technology to catch on, you've got to be more diligent.

  • Profilemanager for windows based computers and android devices

Is there anyway  to set up windows based computers or android devices in profile manager?  I assume not so is there another way to do this?

No ProfileManager is for Apple devices only. If you want to cover Windows or Android instead of or as well as Apple devices then you need to look at an alternative like MobileIron.

  • Canon HV20. Anyone using one? Any problems with iMovie HD?

So as a follow up to my other post about the Sony, has anyone been using Canon's HV20 with iMovie hd? If I can't get the older Sony to run with iMovie, I'd probably check this out over the Sony HD model, given all the reviews I've read. I really would like an external mic ability, in case I want to use a lavaliere mic for an interview. It appears that the Sony will not allow me to use one. I assume that I can easily plug this model into a MacBook and run it from iMovie, as well as import and edit clips.
    Thoughts?

There is a box in the top right corner of this discussion group labeled "Search Discussions". Just type HV20 in there. There have been a couple of threads lately on the HV20.

  • Anyone using one of the new iMac intels with Logic Pro?

Hey people the title says it all really. Anyone using that particular combination? More specifically the newer Core 2 Duo range.
If so, how is it handling Logic and perhaps your 3rd party plug-ins? I used to have a Dual 1.8 gig G5 (see spec below) and that was pretty powerfull but unfortunately one of the processors died so I had to sell it on. Now I'm thinking of getting an iMac due its size and price.
    Cheers and beers everyone.
    Dual 1.8 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   3 Gig ram,

    yup
this has been asked and answered a lot - but i'll bite:
I've got a imac c2d 2.16 2gb ram and it flies. haven't got close to making it sweat yet.
been running upto 8 audio tracks with between 3-7 plugins a track, 2-3 + space designers, stylus rmx with 4/5 instances and fx and maybe 3-4 soft synths - e.g. 2+ absynths and a couple of logic plugins plus an ultrabeat.
dmitedly i am comparing it to my old powerbook - but really it flies and i'm occasionally aso running imovie in the background and surfing the web if the whim takes me.
I'd recommend at least 2 gb ram - but although i bought mine in feb with the full knowledge that a new imac might be introduced soon, i'd have to say wait....check out macrumors buying guide as it's long overdue for an imac new model.
    hope that helps,
    rounik

  • Anyone using one of these processor upgrades?

Is anyone using this processor upgrade from Other World Computing? Its this one:

    # 100MHz or 133MHz bus operation
    # Bus Ratio of up to 16:1
I have just recieved a Quicksilver 733(was supposed to be a dual 800,but it was defective),and I would like to max it out without spending nearly $400.00US for one of the 7448's.Is this worth $200.00US?Will I notice performance close to my dual 1.25 MDD?Or is this just a waste of money?Any info at all on this upgrade would be very appreciated, thanks!

Well, duh,I should have just looked at your sig japamac! I forgot you were running one of these, nice to know its reliable.Good to know it will keep up with my current computer as well. Thanks BDAqua as I actually wanted to know if it would at least be better than the dual 800 I didnt get.Dont mind spending the cash, just dont want it to get out of hand if its just a small increase in performance. This will be paired with a 9800pro and sata Hitachi 1TB upgrades,so this shouldnt be a slowpoke with Leopard. And of course I maxed the ram out.Again thanks for the info(and FAST!!)!

  • I need to know the difference between planned SKF and Actual SKF from business view and when I can use one of them ?

I need just to know the difference between plan SKF and Actual SKF in business example and when I use one of them.
    thanks

    Hi Salaam,
Statistical Key Figure (SKF) is a base to allocate the cost between cost centers. Usually, common cost centers cost should allocate to respective department cost centers on monthly basis.
Some of SKFs are: Calculating floor rent on SFT, Telephone charges on No. of units, and employees head count is with "Each" in SAP.
Apart from Ajay's reply, you can consider the Canteen exp in an organization. Assume Admin, Fin and Mfg departments are getting food services from Canteen. Here, total monthly cost of Canteen exp should be allocated to respective departments. Here, we use SKF as total head count of each department and distribute the cost.
Planned SKF is what you planned on the beginning of a period. (Assume head count was planned as 30 in the month beginning)
Actual SKF is what exactly you consumed over the period. (Actual employees provided canteen services during the month is 25)

  • Use Time Capsule with Windows-based Computers and PowerLan Devices

    Hi All -
I would like to inquire whether I can:
    1) use a Windows-based conputer to access the internal hard disk of Time Capsule; and
    2) connect the Time Capsule with prower lan devices (e.g. Aztech) to extend the wirless coverage.
    Thank you.
    Gary

Yes.. but.. Long term storage of info is not really wise where you have no backup. TC is not able to back itself up and you will have issues finding anything but manually doing it from windows.
    What windows version?
Have you installed the airport utility? That makes life much easier, as it adds bonjour for windows and a disk access agent.
Simply installing the utility may be enough. If not open windows explorer and type the name or IP directly into the address bar.
Note.. you should use all names on the TC that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress (where you obviously change to real name (no spaces of course) or IP)
If you still have issues.. check that you can ping the TC.. and make sure firewalls are not blocking it and your PC is located HOME, not WORK or PUBLIC.

  • NAS and Streaming device needed.

Looking for some advice and reccommendations for streaming movies to my TV and a decent NAS storage set-up. I currently have infinity with the HH3 but don't mind changing the router if needed. For the NAS I'd like to send all my photos, movies and music to it from my laptop and be able to share it round 3 xboxes and the TV in my bedroom, which is where I need some sort of wi-fi streaming device. For the NAS I think 2TBs of storage would be enough and preferably something user friendly. As for what to use to stream to the TV in the bedroom, I'm just not sure whats best. I've seen Android dongles, Apple TV and Western Digital devices but I don't know which is the right way to go. I just want something that works without breaking the bank.
I would also like to connect a second router to the wired network upstairs so that I could extend the wireless range and offer more ports for more devices.
    Any help appreciated.

Think I'll go for it. Reading the reviews on Amazon and it seems to tick all the boxes. Mines going to be plugged into my HH3 (gigE port? ). Any issues with the BT router or should I go for a 3rd party one? Sorry for all the questions.
The router should not be an issue, as the NAS has its own media server, although I do not use the one on mine. I liked it because it has a web server and FTP as well. You can also assign users and security settings for any shares that you set up.
Please assign it a static IP address, outside of the home hubs DHCP range. I use 192.168.1.57.
It just makes everthing much easier.
