Plug-in/Extension won't delete, crashes Firefox

Forgive me for this long post. Let me know if this is better suited to a Mac help forum. I have Firefox 16.0.2 and Mac OSX 10.5.8.
Recently Firefox kept crashing every time I went to open it. I opened it in safe mode and played around with different combinations of enable/disabling plug-ins and extensions until it would open fine. The culprit was this Nielsen NetSight thing. I vaguely remember possibly downloading something from Nielsen maybe two or three years ago, but nothing recently, and I've never used anything. However, if memory serves me right, this add-on has always been floating around disabled in my Firefox settings.
There is an extension showing in Firefox called "Nielsen NetSight (Firefox Tracker Add-on) 1.0." There were also some plug-ins showing in Firefox before called "Nielsen NetSight (Firefox Tracker Add-on) 1.0" and "Nielsen NetSight (Chrome Tracker Add-on) 1.0" or something very similar to that. I disabled them all, and then Firefox opened fine.
But then things got weird-
The next morning I wake up and turn on my computer and the same thing is happening. I investigate, and it's these Nielsen plug-ins again. Could have sworn I disabled them. So I disable them again, everything works again, all is good. But then I close my laptop, open it up again, same thing - they're re-enabled.
There is no option to remove them (rather than just disabling them) in Firefox itself, so I do some Googling and end up in name/Library/Application Support/Internet Plug-Ins, and there are these files called "FirefoxTrackerPlugin.bundle" and "ChromeTrackerPlugin.bundle." I recognize the names from the plug-in names I was seeing in Firefox, and I delete the files, and then empty the trash. Firefox opens fine, and the plug-ins are no longer showing up on the plug-in list. However, the extension "Nielsen NetSight (Firefox Tracker Add-on) 1.0" is still appearing - but it is listed as disabled, and Firefox opens fine.
But then the next time I close my computer and open it back up, Firefox is crashing again. I go back into that folder name/Library/Application Support/Internet Plug-Ins and to my surprise, "FirefoxTrackerPlugin.bundle" and "ChromeTrackerPlugin.bundle" are back even though I deleted them. Now the plug-ins don't show in Firefox, but the extension shows and is listed as enabled.
So basically, I'm stuck at this point where every time my computer goes to sleep or gets turned off, this "Nielsen NetSight (Firefox Tracker Add-on) 1.0" Firefox extension re-enables itself and these two files "FirefoxTrackerPlugin.bundle" and "ChromeTrackerPlugin.bundle" reappear in the plug-ins folder. This has been happening repetitively over the past few days.
In the periods right after I delete the plug-in files and remove them from the trash, I have searched my whole computer for things with names like "Nielsen" or "FirefoxTracker," etc, but I'm not seeing anything. The only thing that showed up was in my Firefox profile folder, in the extensions folder some file called prefs.js with a bunch of code. It appeared to correspond to about:config extensions.installCache. In that, there's a bunch of stuff and
....[{"name":"app-system-local","addons":{"[email protected]":{"descriptor":"/Library/Application Support/Mozilla/Extensions/{ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}/[email protected]","mtime":1382126687000},"{23fcfd51-4958-4f00-80a3-ae97e717ed8b}":{"descriptor":"/Library/Application Support/Mozilla/Extensions/{ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}/{23fcfd51-4958-4f00-80a3-ae97e717ed8b}","mtime":1332977526000}}},{......
Interesting thing about this is the rest of the code is referencing a different folder than /Library/Application Support/Mozilla/Extensions/. All the rest of it looks at /Users/myname/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/eiey9ybc.default-1381002852316/extensions/, which is where my extensions are. There was a single folder in /Library/Application Support/Mozilla/Extensions/ with nothing in it. So I deleted it. (Probably shouldn't have, since I have no idea what I'm doing, but whatever). Then I tried deleting any /Library/Application Support/Mozilla/ altogether, since everything seems to be saved in the Firefox folder, not the Mozilla folder anyway. Unsurprisingly, that didn't work, and this plug-in keeps reappearing and the extension keeps re-enabling and every time it is enabled it crashes Firefox.
Anyway, anybody have any idea how I can delete this thing so I don't have to keep opening Firefox in safe mode?
Something similar happened a few months ago, but I couldn't figure out what was going on and ended up restoring factory settings. I'd rather not do that since 1) it doesn't seem to have worked last time, 2) I don't feel like reinstalling all my add-ons and fixing all my settings, and 3) I can get Firefox to work perfectly fine so long as my computer never goes to sleep - it definitely seems to have something to do with these Nielsen tracker plug-in things, since Firefox works fine whenever they are disabled.
Not really expecting responses, but thank you in advance to anyway who might know anything.

That wasn't the answer, but I appreciate the help. Nothing related is in the login items (just iTunes and a thing for my phone).
Further discoveries though:
When I was in system preferences, I saw Other- Plugsuit, and went in there. Under "unmanaged," "NielsenWebKitTiger" is there. If I click the little gear underneath and click "show in finder," I end up at Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/NielsenWebKitTiger.bundle/. I tried to delete this, but it keeps reappearing like the others when I restart the computer.
Furthermore, I have now found the extension's location-
Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Mozilla/Extensions/{ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}/[email protected]
Tried deleting this, also keeps reappearing.
It is particularly confusing to me that I have so many different extensions folders. What is the difference between
Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Mozilla/Extensions/
Macintosh HD/Users/My Name/Library/Application Support/Mozilla/Extensions/
and
Macintosh HD/Users/My Name/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/eiey9ybc.default-1381002852316/Extensions/
The rest of my extensions are in the last of those three.
(And also, what's even the difference between Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/ and Macintosh HD/Users/My Name/Library/Application Support/?)

Fire fox crashed. I deleted it and installed new version, it worked fine. Got an email with possible virus, so system restored to an earlier date. When I did this, it brought back the old firefox. I tried to delete it, but it won't delete. When I tried to download new version to replace old version, it says I have to close firefox first, but it's not open. What do I do now?

    Hi jposes
Before installing the new firefox go to Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Supr), go to the Processes tab and search for any "firefox.exe" (or firefox.exe*32), give a right click and select "End Process Tree". This should be enough to let you install the new FireFox.
Take care and hope this had been useful to you.

  • Firefox crashes upon open - won't send crash report; crash report info summarized below

I have one computer that crash every time I start Firefox. Ocassionally the firefox window will appear for less than a second and then the Crash Report Window shows up; most times it goes right to Crash Report Window. Then it is for some reason unable to send the crash repor; it keeps looping back to the crash report. I've checked my modem and router are operating correctly; I have another computer that's working fine. I've run scan for Trojans, viruses and still see the problem. Any help would be very much appreciated as I'm stuck at this point. For what it's worth, Internet Explorer has the same problem, crashing upon opening.

Hello. I have a similar problem to the question of Ryan Vaught, (Firefox crashes upon open - won't send crash report; crash report info summarized below [MY] Firefox version: prior one to 3.6.7 Operating System: Windows XP Provessional). Mine is a bit different tho. Firefox seems to be crashing and my internet crashes right with it. When it does this, it also takes out some Win32 system .exe files. I too have ran AVG (Full Coverage /Purchased one) and then updated to Viper (Sunbelt Software) and it comes up clean of any viruses, etc. Once it crashes and I close Firefox, the crash report request comes up. When I hit send, it says it cannot be sent with no additional information as to why. I just updated Firefox to 3.6.7 and sure hope this helps, but it almost always happens when I am playing games that use flash. I can send a screenshot if you need it and feel free to edit my question if need be. I've checked my Viper settings and can get to all the websites so far trying to rule it out. Deleted my internet set up and then added it back as a new connection (hope that made sense), so I don't know who to be asking this question of, but hoping you may know the answer why I can't send the crash report. Whew! Sorry for the lengthy question/issue. Your help is greatly appreciated!! Carolyn Burnam

  • Downloadhelper extension stopped functioning. I need to uninstall it but the extension website says to contact Firefox for such help. Will reinstalling it delete and re-create or will I end up with a non-functioning old copy and a functioning new one?

I use a year-old Macintosh with OS 10.5.8. I tried to change the video output format of downloadhelper extension from FLV to a format playable by Macs and Windows computers. In trying that, downloadhelper disappeared from the upper margin of the open screen and is no longer accessible. I want to dis-install it and then reinstall it, but there is no procedure at either the downloadhelper website or the FireFox website to do so. I am afraid to reinstall without first removing the extension. How can I remove it? The downloadhelper site specifically says to ask Firefox how to do it and offers no help.

I solved my own problem. Uninstall download helper as follows: Go to Tools|Add-ons. Click on extensions and look for "DownloadHelper in the list. On the bottom you should click on the <Uninstall> button. You'll need to restart Firefox.
Then, go to the downloadhelper extension install website on the Firefox website and reinstall downloadhelper.

  • View Source Crashes FIrefox

Just purchased a brand new computer, Windows 8, latest version of Firefox, crashes everytime I try to "View Source". Has done this since I got the computer. Anyone know of any fixes? I use view source all day everyday.

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [[Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems#w_5-reinstall-firefox|here]].
<b>WARNING:</b>Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your [[Profiles|Firefox profile]] data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u> See [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]. <!-- Starting in Firefox 31, the Firefox uninstaller no longer lets you remove user profile data.Ref: Bug 432017 and https://support.mozilla.org/kb/uninstall-firefox-from-your-computer/discuss/5279 [Fx31] Windows uninstaller will no longer offer the option to remove personal data -->
Please report back to say if this helped you!
    Thank you.

I tried to do the instructions Adobe gave me but when
I put in the disc that came with my mac and hold down
C when it restarts it takes me to the screen to do a
    fresh install.
At that point go to the Menu & select Disk Utility - I can't remember exactly which menu but you should be able to find it easily... there isn't too much there
I went into the disk utility through the Apps folder
and for somereason the option to repair isnt
highlighted and it wont let me click it. I tried to
repair permissions/verify but it doesnt change
anything. I looked at the info and it says the volume
can be repaired, but it wont let me.
You can't Repair the disk the system is currently running the OS from - That's why you have to boot from the Installer disk (or some other start-up disk). Repair Disk addresses directory structure issues - totally separate from what Repair Permissions does.

  • I have the latest Adobe flash player installed but it does not show up in my add-ons or plug-ins on Firefox 3.6. In the plug-in check, it recognizes that the shockwave flash is up to date. How can I have the plug-in appear and be enabled on firefox?

I have uninstalled the flash player and installed it numerous times with no recognition by the Firefox plug-ins. I also have uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it as well. I have also restarted my computer several times as well. The flash player is certainly installed but not working on Firefox. Thanks in advance for your help.

    James j,

  • Java won't work on Firefox, while it works on Safari on a Mac.

I have a MacBook Pro and downloaded Firefox 3.6 for it. Now I've realized that Java plugins won't work in Firefox for some reason, while they do work in Safari that came with the Mac. The problem wouldn't be with Java, since it works on Safari.
The Java-related plug-ins I have installed in Firefox are the Java Embedding Plug-in 0.9.7.3 and Java Plug-in 2 for NPAPI browsers.
When I go to a page that contains a Java applet, there is no error, the page says it's done loading, and there's a blank spot where an applet is supposed to be.

Actually, I have both plugins installed in Mac OS X 10.6, verified by entering '''about:plugins''' in the SeaMonkey 2 Location Bar (address bar)
    Java Embedding Plugin 0.9.7.3
    <br>File name: MRJPlugin.plugin
Java Plug-In 2 for NPAPI Browsers
    <br>File name: JavaPlugin2_NPAPI.plugin
This is a new iMac computer I just set up last week running OS X 10.6.4 with all current Apple Software Updates. I have SeaMonkey 2 installed on it, but not Firefox.
I have Java 6 Update 20 ( 1.6.0_20 ) installed, verified by going to the test link in the KB article I posted above,
    http://javatester.org/version.html
Java 1.6.0_20 (referred to as "Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 2" on the page cor-el linked) should be available from Apple's [http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1338 Software Update] feature.
Another test link you can try (from about:plugins):
    http://browserspy.dk/java.php
I think that the Java Embedding plugin is something that Mozilla includes with all its current browsers (Firefox, SeaMonkey, Camino) based on: http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/OSX.html#Java
    ...which links to http://javaplugin.sourceforge.net/

A year or so ago I worked in app development. One of the apps we worked on wouldn't install properly from Testflight. It just sits on the homescreen as the skeleton app with no image. • URLs clicked in other programs won't load in Firefox

Just within the last 1-3 weeks (?) or so, I find that I can't click on links in other programs and have the URL load in Firefox, which is my default browser. They always used to load perfectly and switch me to the new tab in FF, but now they don't.
At first I tried disabling a couple of recent FF add-ons one at a time to see if one of them might have been the problem, but that didn't seem to solve it, though I may have missed one. Still, I can't imagine how an unrelated add-on could cause URLs not to load from other programs. I have tried loading URLs by clicking on them in Thunderbird, WordPad, MailWasher Pro, and even Libre Office, but all of them either just twitched the screen for an instant and then stopped, or else gave me a message such as "WordPad was unable to open the URL" or "There was a problem sending the command to the program" (Libre Office). However, when I copy and paste those same URLs into FF and hit Enter, those sites load perfectly.
I may be wrong in this, but it appears that something has changed within FF that now prevents links clicked in other programs from loading. My only other thought at the moment is that this '''may''' possibly have started about the time I upgraded from FF 10.0.2 to FF 11.0.1, but I have no firm evidence to support that theory.
This is really an annoying and inconvenient problem, so any help in resolving it will be hugely appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Al

The problem is fixed now as a result of some help I got on the WindowsSecrets forum. Once I realized that the problem was occurring not just with MWP and Thunderbird, but with other programs as well (I tried WordPad and Libre Office, both of which likewise failed to load the URL into Firefox), I posted the question on other forums, trying to see if others knew anything about this issue. I got the answer from a forum member on this page:
    http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.php/145441-URLs-clicked-in-other-programs-won-t-load-in-Firefox?p=847784#post847784
In case you're not a member there or can't load that page, here was his suggestion:
With FF closed type %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ in the start menu search box, click the item that appears and delete localstore.rdf FF will replace it on starting.
I did that and all four programs that had previous problems loading URLs, including MWP, now load them perfectly. The only (minor) problem with this solution was that localstore.rdf apparently stores all the info about such things as the Firefox toolbars and their customisation, so all that was lost when I deleted the file, but I got them re-customised fairly quickly and all is well. Any thoughts regarding what localstore.rdf does, why this problem happened, or how to prevent it from happening again will be appreciated.
I hope this info helps. Thanks again for all your help.
    Regards,
    Al
