Plug in Firewire...nothing...

My last mac book was 9mos old and went in for service 3 times. Finally got my new macbook last month. With imovie 08 on it. Now when I hook up my sony hc38 it does nothing. Acts as if nothing is connected. My last one I just plugged it in and it started right up to download. Does this have to do with 08 or is my second macbook a lemon?

Silly question, but did you try opening up imovie? Mine wont start up automatically either when I connect my cam, I have to open imovie myself but thats no big deal.

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro battery will not charge after plugging in firewire cable shut down computer

I have a mid 2010 15" Macbook pro with Lion installed.
I was running off battery, and I went to plug in a firewire cable, not plugged into anything, and when I inserted it, the computer shut off.
The computer would not turn on again without being plugged into the AC adaptor. The magsafe charger shows green, but the computer says not charging. The battery is showing 57%, but the indicator lights will only light up when AC charger is connected..
I have let it sit off, and plugged in for a couple hours, and nothing chages, and let it sit overnight not plugged in, but nothing.
I have read other forums about the same issue,, it seems like its a common issue, and some have said what it could be, but no one said what it IS.
I have tried resetting the SMC and PRAM, but to no avail.
When i plug in the AC adaptor, the computer immediately turns on (which I find kond of funny), and I am able to turn it off normally, and it will stay off, and I can also turn it on if the charger has been connected from pervious.

What do you mean by "HD to VGA adapter converter"?
Do you mean have an HDMI to VGA adapter connected the the Mini's HDMI port?
Or maybe you plugged n the the included HDMI to DVI adapter and then connected a DVI to DVI adapter?
In either case that will not work since VGA is analog and the Mini's HDMI port is digital only.
You need to purchase a mini displayport to VGA adapter. It plugs into the Mini's Thunderbolt port.

Make sure you get a name--brand one. I purchased some el cheapo, no-name ones and they did not work

I cannot use it on the MBP as it is a Firewire 800 but after looking into the solutions on the net, I figured out I need an adaptor from Firewire IEEE to Firewire 800...isn't it?
Yes, you'll need a FW 800 to 400 cable. The device will run at FW400 speed. Here's one example: http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-FireWire-Cable-130849-Orange/dp/B001NXDQAY

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer

  • FCP & other programs not opening when plug in Firewire

    Hello,
First, please forgive the double posting - but I just didn't think that I had made myself very clear lastnight, and I wanted to rectify that.
The problem is, that whenever I plug my camera/deck into my G5 with my firewire, no program will open, including Final Cut. I tried Repairing Permissions, and shutting down and unplugging everything, then powering back up again. Then, I turn on the camera and try opening any program, even Disk Utility, and it will not open (giving me the spinning beach ball) until I turn the camera off. This is making things very difficult, especially since I have projects in Final Cut, that I need to Print to Video, view on my tv monitor, or do anything at all.
I might add that this has indeed worked before, and after some 'futzing' w/it, it would work, but I had been 'futzing' for over 2 hrs., and have lost way too much time. In addition, in order to Log and Capture, I've been 'daisy chaining', using my Dazzle, as well as the camera w/the tv, but, it does not work the other way around, when trying to export -- thanks very much!

In response to: "Has the dazzle and the camera ever been connected to the computer at the same time?" and, "Have they both been turned on while both connected at the same time"?
No, they cannot be connected at the same time - I only have 2 firewire ports, one is for the Lacie external drive, the other is for either the Dazzle or Firewire. I unpluged the Dazzle to make way for the Firewire lastnight, because I wanted to Print to Video, and could not, because no program would open up, w/the Firewire plugged in.
I will try resetting the PMU, thanks. Not sure how the camera could be the suspect, as it used to work just fine, and it's less than 2 yrs. old, but will take into consideration.
"(You have taken any hard drive out of the chain while you are troubleshooting - right?)" When I shut everything down lastnight, I unplugged everything, including the Lacie, then plugged everything back in, is that what you mean? Thanks Studio X.

  • After trying twice, how do I get a password to install as updated plug-in. Nothing happens!in

I am attempting to update a plug-in, and have no password to my knowledge. When I try to get one, the system reports that they have emailed one, but nothing is there when I check my mail. I have been through the process twice with no result. Please tell me what to do. Thank you, Robbie Borchers.

Why do you need a password to install a plugin, other than an admin password?

Yes, I have tried different firewire cables and such.  Removed my firewire hub, tried plugging into the actual ports on the MacPro and plugging in the firewire ports on the back of my Cinema 30 display.  I even bought a new firewire cable just to make sure.  So for now I guess I am going to downgrade my MacMini to Snow Leopard and use that machine to do video capture.
So last night I removed the primary harddrive from the MacPro.  I installed a new 1TB harddrive. Formatted that drive and did a clean install of Mountain Lion and ran all software updates.  Crashes when I plugin my firewire cameras with no other software but the OS.
So then I reformatted the drive and did a clean install of Lion and did all software updates.  Still crashes.
I formatted the drive for a third time, this time installing Snow Leopard.  Did all software updates.  Plugged in my cameras one at a time and no crash.  I installed iLife '11 and was able to video capture with iMovie via the firewire port.
I am pretty convinced that my hardware (at least) is in working order, otherwise it would have crashed with Snow Leopard also (correct me if my conclusion is incorrect).  So I am inclined to agree with you that I may have triggered a bug in the OS.
Thank you for your insights.  How do I go about reporting this issue to the Apple Software Engineers?

  • Airpot Express Base Station blinks amber once when plugged in then nothing

Hi, I haven't used my Airport Express for a while and I just tried to plug it in, and all it does is blink amber once and then it does nothing else. I have tried to reset it and hard reset it and many variations of the reset button and unplugging/plugging in and it doesn't do anything no matter what I do. No lights ever come on and it doesn't show up in Airport Utility.
Has anybody had this problem or know what's wrong or how I can fix it?
    Thank you,
    Aaron

If it still behaves in this way after a [factory default reset|http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728], it has a hardware problem.

  • Musician looking for "base" for macbook  to plug usb/firewire gear into

    Hello,
I am a musician and I am currently sort of rebuilding my studio and I have a new Macbook that I would like to use as the basis of my studio.
Now I have quite a bit of external "stuff" in firewire and usb that I plan to plug into the macbook when I place it on my desk. Things such as external harddrives, usb midi keyboards, external soundcards and so forth.
I was wondering if there is one of those "base" or cradles out there that I could plug all of this gear into so I don't have to constantly plug and unplug everything. That way I can just set the Macbook in it and go. I presume this base would also help to keep the Macbook substantially cooler.
Does anyone have any suggestions for something like this that I could use?

The MB doesn't have a dock or as you call it "base". Your really not going to be able to utilize more than what you have there. Speaking from experience. Sometime I use Protools LE rack unit, M Audio 88 key Midi Controller & a Yamaha Motif ES Rack. Just make sure you keep your computer running clean and get the full 2GB mirrored RAM.

  • My volume isn't working it keeps saying headphones if I try to turn it up or down although my headphones aren't plugged in and nothing it stuck in the hole e.g fluff help please x

My phone has no volume and says headphones if I try to turn the volume up or down. My headphones aren't plugged In and there is nothing caught in the hole e.g fluff. Please help x

If you use headphones, do you get sound? Try inserting & removing your headphones a couple times to see if sound from the speaker comes back.
If not, it could be a hardware issue with the headphone jack and you need to bring the phone in to be checked out.

  • Apple logo when plugged into wall, nothing when connected to computer

I think my iPhone may have finally met its last days. This week while on my honeymoon in Puerto Rico, I jumped into a waterfall with my phone in my pocket. Crap! I pulled my phone out of my pocket, and it still worked fine. I started praising my Otterbox for saving it. 3 hours later I arrived back at my hotel room, and the phone wouldn't turn on. Weird because it was working for a couple of hours. 3 days later and anytime that I plug it into the wall all I get is an apple logo that comes in goes every few seconds. I tried a reset and no luck.
When plugged into the wall, I can hold the home and the lock buttons, and it shows me a picture that says to connect it to iTunes but it disappears after half a second. However, whenever I plug it into the computer I get NOTHING. No apple logo, nothing in the device center that shows I'm even connected.
Is there any hope for me? Any help is much appreciated. I have over 200 pictures from my wedding and honeymoon that I don't want to lose.

Sorry, disregard the last response; I can't edit it. You should dry it BEFORE trying different cables. The safest way to go about this is dry your iPhone inside-out and to not turn it on until it's dry. Maybe there is a little moisture stuck inside preventing it from booting, but if you're lucky, it's not permanently damaged. The best way I've heard of to dry it is to leave it overnight in a tight bag with dry rice or, better yet, silica packets (those anti-moisture things found in packaged items). Maybe longer if you want to be extra safe. If it still doesn't charge without the Apple logo flashing, try using different Lightning to USB cables. Maybe it's just a bad cable, but you shouldn't test that until you've dried your phone.

  • Plug in firewire problem...help please

This weekend i purchased a new iMac (3.06 Ghz ). (Free financing for 12 months.)
When i tried to plug in an external firewired hard drive it seems that the male plug from my fw hard drive does not match actually larger then the female port for the firewire.
    Is that possible?
because at the moment I feel as though I would be forcing the plug in and there goes the warranty.

That is because your new Imac has a Firewire 800 plug and you have a Firewire 400 device. You just need an adapter like this one.

  • Phono plug to firewire?

Hello. I have some old video footage on a camcorder with a phono plug outlet. Does anyone have any ideas how I could access the video footage/download it onto the Mac? I don't have a camcorder that can record from the television so I recorded the footage onto a DVD and now realise there is no way to import from a DVD to imovie either. The video footage is precious and I would really like to get it onto the Mac for editing. Help!

    Hi,
On this page on my site http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page1.html I have link to this page http://www.computervice.com/Products/Dazzle/DV_Bridge/

I am not sure if this page has ever been updated as the price has never changed.
    There are similar devices.
