Plug in Mini Diplayport to HDMI, Lose Audio Output
For the first time today, I plugged in my mid 2009 MBP5,3 into my TV using an HDMI to mini displayport cable. I got video, but no sound.
Ever since then, I have had no sound of any kind come out of the computer's speakers. When I look in System Preferences/Sound/Ouput, the only option I see is optical digital-out port. No internal speakers. I have rebooted and stuck toothpicks into both the mini displayport and audio ports. No go.
Any suggestions on how to get my sound back?
Thanks much!
Optical digital-out port problem
I have been dealing with the following problem with my macbook speakers: I can't get the Speakers to work. It doesn't show up on System Preferences as an option for Sound Output.
I am confident that it is not a hardware issue. I have windows running in the mac and the speakers are working just fine. Unfortunately on the mac OS the Sound Output is shown as Optical digital-out port. When headphones are plugged in, it works just fine.
I have installed a new version of the OS and I have reset the PRAM and SMC without any luck.
Any help will be appreciated.

Mini DVI to HDMI with audio. Where can I find it?
I'm looking for a cable adapter (mini DVI to HDMI with audio) to my mac book air (2010). Where can I find it?
DVI and miniDVI only transmit video-signals but no audio-signal.
Regardless of the cable adapter you get (I don't have any recommendation) you always have to make a audio-cable connection between the MBA and the TV.

White MacBook 2.16, mini-DVI to HDMI, no audio
I have connected a 32" Sony HDTV to my MacBook via a short adapter cable, mini-DVI to HDMI, and then a 3m HDMI cable. The video is excellent and although there is sound output from Macbook, there is none from the TV. Any suggestions how to get audio through the TV?
Just to add in case someone else views this thread via a Google search.
None of the Apple video adapters (for the current and previous portable line up) support audio through them, even the newer MacBooks and MacBook Pros with MiniDisplay Port. There are 3rd party adapters that have all the necessary cabling for audio and video but those are not available through Apple. -
Asrock ION330/Nvidia HDMI - No audio output
Machine was running archlinux and not been upgraded in over 6mths but HDMI audio worked fine. Decided to do a scratch build since all the changes in that time and have a nice clean system.
If it helps, this is what I install. Ssed this exact same install process for another Asrock ION330 and Acer Revo3610 (both same hardware) but neither use HDMI at all. Both VGA with either optical or analog audio. Both work with no additional config.

Get no sound output but also zero errors on any of the following commands. I should add that the receiver does not detect any audio coming in, ie it usually identifies how many channels of audio and type it is receiving.

[SOLVED] Only HDMI/Displayport audio outputs; no sound from speakers
I have a Dell XPS14 running Arch, which has worked fine for a while, but now has suddenly stopped detecting the internal speakers and headphones, so it will not play sound. I have tried a few things to narrow down the problem, but I've had no luck so far. In GNOME shell, when I press the physical volume up/down buttons on my laptop, it displays a sound icon with "HDMI / DisplayPort" underneath . When I go into the gnome shell audio settings menu, everything is greyed out, and no output devices are listed.
If anyone has any suggestions as to what the problem might be or how I might go about troubleshooting it from here, I would appreciate it.
One thing that struck me was that I had installed a music player, Clementine, recently, and I'm not sure if I did or did not ever have sound after that. I installed Clementine and two optional gstreamer0.10 plugins (bad and ugly). Since this seemed like it would be possibly related, I've since removed Clementine, the new gstreamer plugins, and all of their dependencies not needed by any other package. So I now don't think that is likely to be the problem. Just to be thorough, though, here are the packages which were installed:

Last edited by bond0087 (2014-06-09 02:06:08)Thanks again for the info and suggestions. I thought the same thing regarding the sparse output of alsamixer, but since I never had trouble with the sound before, I don't know how much would have shown up when everything was working well.
I still haven't really found a smoking gun here, unfortunately. As far as I can tell, the power saving settings look about right, because the power saving settings for the HDMI audio (which works) looks to be the same as the others.
Thanks for the link with more information regarding the module options for the intel sound driver. I'm going to dig into those when I have time next week. The thing that makes me less optimistic that I'm going to fix it with module options is that I can't figure out how those module options would suddenly change.
I'm also going to try out the linux-lts kernel to see if it behaves any differently, and then maybe boot another distro with a usb key to see if it works, and if so, what looks different.
Here's what I get from the suggested tests. Let me know if anyone sees something strange that I missed.

Intel Mini: DVI to HDMI = Video + Audio over the same cable?
Hello,
I have a friend who has a 1.83GHz Mac Mini. He wants to hook it up to his TV, an Hitachi L42VP01U, which has a couple of HDMI inputs, from what i can make out.
Question is, if i get a DVI to HDMI cable, does that carry Audio as well as video?
Many thanks,
cHi Col Kav,
sorry, but no.
DVI only carries video signals but no audio signals.
So, your friend has to use an audio-connection from his Mini to his TV.
Regards

Macbook pro to hdmi video/audio output TV
I Bought a mini display port to hdmi cable, to play dispaly my desktop on my LCD TV. the display works just fine, but there's no sound. I try to follow the steps in youtube, but the problem is, there's no sound output detected. Any ideas on how to solve this? Because, what i know is that hdmi can both deliver hdmi video and audio.

HT204388 HDMI for audio output only
Hi,
I want to the use the HDMI purely for sending audio to a surround sound system, keeping the video output to my existing monitor connected on mini displayport. Can this be configured in OSX?
Thanks in advanceHi, I don't really know, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there. -
Mac mini audio output problems
This is similar to a problem that appeared before, but with a different twist.
On 4 July all was well. On 5 July I switched on and there was no "chord" from the Mac. When I collected my mail - no sound from my speakers (which are part of my screen). Logged on to a couple of sites - no sound.
The System Profiler, under the "Audio (Built In)" category, says: "No Built-in Audio." I know that's wrong because it's always worked before and when I plug my headset in it works fine.
When I go to the Sound preferences panel in System Preferences, it finds the headset but if I unplug that it finds nothing.
I tried running the hardware test (by putting in the OS X install disc and holding D during startup.) It couldn't find a problem.
So, as far as I can see, audio output is fine for the USB headset output but not for the others. Is there a simple fix? The nearest Apple store is about 200 miles away and I don't fancy the idea of posting the Mac off.
(And I think it's still under warranty for a couple more weeks.)
Mac mini Mac OS X (10.4.10)hello mini users with the "no audio output" problem
it seems that there are faulty output jacks in the macbook and the mac mini
there are two things you can try:
i tried everything and began thinking about what new software i had installed. it was "macam" which enables you to use older webcams on OSX. i needed that to use my webcam on skype.
macam installs a file called "macam.component"
if you have the same, do this - take that file out of:
(your hard drive)/library/quicktime - macam.component
and just put it on your desktop
restart, then in your sound pref's choose your audio output (if doesn't work restart again)
the first time i took it out, i had my sound back instantly, another time i had to choose audio output in sound prefs. you kind of have to try different things. after you get your sound back, you can put back "macam.component" to use your webcam.
it seems macam causes the problem, the two can not work at the same time.
the second thing: if you dont have "maccam" try plugging and unplugging output jack a few times and restarting until you have sound.
the problem still could be with the OSX 10.4.10 update / quicktime...or maybe even a hardware problem like others with macbooks were saying (with the red light), not sure.
people with macbooks and who have the red light on, say to use a paperclip to turn off the switch inside.
my mini does not have a red light on. i tried using a paperclip but it doesnt work.
hope this helps, beleive me i feel your pain!!!!
what good is a computer without sound?
extremely annoying problem that i hope apple looks into and fixes

Hi, i've seen this interesting program http://www.algoriddim.net/index.html
for djs.
These djs program usually use to way to work:
- dual sound card
- mutiple output on a single sound card
This program use the second approach.... but mac mini has only an output.
I remember that my last pc was able, using a tune program, to convert an audio input to an audio output to get 5.1 system.
I wonder to know if it is possible to convert the input to output with some kinda program, or is there any way to get working the pre-cue with a mini.hello mini users with the "no audio output" problem

Thunderbolt iMac - mini-dvi to HDMI - Image not sharp on TV
I am trying to use my TV as a second monitor for my newish iMac. I used to do the same thing with my macbook (2006) with a mini-dvi to HDMI adapter. The signal then was crisp and typical of 1080p. I recently tried two different mini-displayport to hdmi adapters to output my monitor from the thunderbolt port of the iMac. The first was a cheap one and the second was a better one. Each time, the TV says the signal is 1080p, but the image is blurry, although sound does work.
The TV and the HDMI cable is the same as my old macbook which worked perfectly. Also, I have been using Windows 7 with bootcamp and the image is the same. This limits the problems to the graphics output, port, or adapter. As multiple adapters still have issues, I don't know it anything else may help it.
Is there much possibility that there is something with the computer, either graphics card or port itself, that could cause this, or maybe something software wise that could be an issue?Check under the system settings to make sure you are putting out the correct signal. If it is set at the correct resolution then your TV doesn't have enough Hz. Hope that helps!

Standalone Instrument (EWQL Play) loses audio as I start a logic 8 project
Hi there,
A problem has recently developed whereby I lose audio output on my standalone instrument when I load a Logic 8 project. I am using East West/Quantum Leap Play as a standalone instrument because of the high CPU and RAM usage of the samples. But recently as soon as I load any logic project, I lose audio on Play. MIDI still triggers but no audio outputs.
I've tried loading them in a different order but nothing helps.
I don't have the same problem with Cubase so I believe I might've checked a box I shouldn't have somewhere.
Can anyone help...?
ThanksHi,
Make sure you are enabling "Universal Track Mode". It's in the Audio preferences tab.

KN9 Platinum - is audio output via both SPDIF ports possible??
I am looking at this board because it has both an optical and coaxial SPDIF output - can you tell me whether these can be plugged into and used simultaneously for HD Audio output. ie I want to be able to output a single digital audio stream from an application like PowerDVD via both connections.
Note this is not about multi streams from different applications - just a single stream via both SPDIF ports.
For an HTPC setup I want to be able to take the optical SPDIF output to a surround sound receiver and the coaxial SPDIF output into an HDMI enabled graphics card which includes audio input so I can then take both video/audio to another monitor.
Thanks for your help.
BenYes, audio will do this video won't.

Mini Dvi to hdmi problem, the mini dvi doesn't even plug in all the way?
hi,
i have a mid 2007 macbook, i just bought a mini dvi to hdmi cable, i tried to plug it in and it doesn't even plug on all the way, 1/3 of the conector is still hanging out, and it doesnt display anything anyways, nothing is detected on the macbook or the TV.
somone seem to have the same exact problem as me with the laptop, but his query wasn't answered it was the last post on this thread.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3660057?start=0&tstart=0Thanks for that. I have a Y adapter (3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound just like you said). Under input options on my TV, I can select either HDMI1 input (which gives me video only) or AV1/S input (which gives me audio only) - not both at once...Could you explain how I can get stereo audio on my TV?

2009 24-inch iMac 3.06GHz (EMC no. 2267). I don't get any audio when connecting my Sony HD TV to my iMac via mini DisplayPort. Is there a fix or hardware upgrade? I'm using a Kanex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable w/ audio support.
You can connect the audio from your iMac to your TV using a mini jack (like headphones plug) to rca (regular red and white audio connectors used on every TV,DVD, etc) cable.
On your TV, you need to be able to set the audio for the HDMI input you will use to "analog" and connect the rca end of the cable to the analog inputs on your TV.
