Plugging a Macbook into a TV?

Can you watch Macbook content on a TV?
The setup is a Late-2008 Macbook - going into an older Samsung or something - looked on the back - has what I guess is RCA - one Black (video) and one Yellow (audio). Is this possible? I use the Macbook with a cinema display via Mini-DVI to DVI (Apple) - wondering if I can watch movies off the laptop on the TV.
Don't have a dvd player, and watching movies through the laptop speakers while 2 people sit on the couch a bit away is madness.
Thanks!

The unibody MacBook doesn't support analog TV output (i.e. standard definition composite or s-video). However, some of the previous models did using Apple's mini DVI to composite/s-video adapter. However, that adapter does _not_ work on either the unibody (Aluminum) MacBook or the early 2009 white MacBook.
You can, however, use a VGA to composite/s-video converter box once you have the adapter to output VGA from your MacBook. Here is a link which discusses one such setup (note, this setup will cost you somewhere between $50 to $80 and don't expect it to work absolutely perfectly):

  • Keep losing my wi-fi connection when I plug my macbook into my tv.

I just recently started plugging my macbook into my tv to use it as a dual display. Once I plug in, my wi-fi connection just disappears, and I can't seem to connect to anything. When I plug back out it's back to normal. Does anyone know what's going on here?
    Specs:
    I have 13-inch aluminum MacBook.
I use a mini display port to dvi/dvi to hdmi connection to my tv.
    I have a 32-inch Vizio...not quite sure on the exact model number/year.
Using Snow Leopard as my OS.

I now have this problem where the only thing that changed was the model of my MacBook pro (and the OS version)
I was recently upgraded from a vintage late-2007 MacBook Pro (OS X 10.4) to a late-2009 MacBook Pro, new design, unified body (OS X 10.5.8). On the old model the DVI connector from my 20in Dell display (2405FPW, 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz) plugged right into the notebook and the WiFi (airport) was fine. On the new model I had to buy a mini-display port to DVI adaptor, and the wifi is not fine. Nothing else changed, the new notebook sits in exactly the same location a the older one.
I see the same symptoms as reported above. When the display is not connected, my wifi is fine; when the display is connected, the wifi fails.
I used iStumbler (release 98) to get some readings of signal and noise level. The signal is typically 69 - 71% regardless of configuration. When the display is not connected the noise is typically 11%.
    Connecting things to the notebook:
When the display is connected via the mini-display adaptor and its power switched on, the noise jumps to 22 - 25%, occasionally 30%. (And of course, wifi fails.)
Connecting the notebook power cord does not affect the noise level or wifi.
Connecting a usb hub adds 4 or 5%, but wifi is OK.
Moving things around on the desk can affect the noise level (and signal) somewhat (maybe 5%), but not predictably. What is predictable is that connecting the DVI display almost always breaks the wifi connection.
Note: by 'break' I mean that connections to the internet time out; under system preferences, the OS still believes it is connected and shows its IP address etc. But, if I turn the airport off and then back on, it is usually unable to reconnect to the access point.
A blight on my otherwise wonderful MacBook Pro....

  • Plugging a MacBook into an HDTV

My mother uses a first-generation MacBook, 1.83 GHz. I recently had occasion to plug in another laptop to an HDTV set. This made me wonder: what kind of adaptor is available so that a MacBook can connect to an HDMI port? Will a connection like this also carry sound? How well does this work?
She has never plugged her MacBook into anything but a VGA projector, so I know she does not have an adaptor for HDMI.

Just getting one of these might work, but don't hold me to it. Just a quick google of mini dvi to hdmi. This may have also solved my problem (I want to do the same, just not sure of the ports)

  • Plugging in MacBook sends fans into full drive.

I've just upgraded MacBook Pro to the latest model. Ive noticed that on the new model when I plug my MacBook into the power socket the fans slowly start to speed up they take about 5-10 minutes to get to a really high and LOUD level. As soon as I pull the power cord out you hear the fans slowly start to slow then when plugged back in they speed up again. Is this normal?

I'm no expert, but it doesn't sound normal to me. Fans are supposed to sense heat and turn on when the computer starts getting too hot. If they turn on when you connect the power adaptor, especially if the computer has been off and is cold, I would suspect that there might be a problem with the temperature sensors or something like that. You might try running the Apple Hardware test and see if it shows anything.
But since you just upgraded, you should be under warranty and should be able to get this taken care of at no expense to yourself.
    Good luck!

    Try:
    - Resetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Resetting network settings: Setting>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

  • I just got a new Macbook Pro, plugged my iPod into it and lost all my songs on my iPod.  How do I get them back?

I just got a new MacBook Pro, plugged my iPod into it and noticed all my songs didn't transfer, including the 6 new ones I just purchased.  I then brought it back to my PC to sync, and lost all my songs on my iPod.  I'm now receiving all kinds of weird messages that the name of my iPod is a duplicate and cannot be synced (no matter what I put in it).  During the process of loading it on my Mac., a bunch of odd emails were popping up to sync.  I just kept deleting and adding mine.  Is it corrupted? What have I done??? I am a personal trainer and live by my iPod.  Please help.

Your post is abit confusing, especially on getting those weird messages and emails,( assumed in your Windows machine.)
Most likely you have Restored the iPod using the new Macbook pro, using the same name as that in your Windows machine, hence the duplicate name warning, as it is trying to sync Automatically.
If you are syncing your iPod to both the Mac and Windows, you must set it to Manually Manage Music, in the first machine that you setup iTunes with the iPod. Read thsi Apple Support Article
In iTunes, Preference, tick on Prevent devices syncing automatically
Hopefully your music are still in both your iTunes library,
Connect the iPod to the Mac
Restore it (just to fix any filesystem corruption by the Windows end)
Set it to Manually Manage Music
Sync your selected songs in your library.
    Whern sync complete, Eject it
Connect it to your Windows PC.
Select the song in the library
    Sync it.
It should work if your ipod Hardisk is not giving any problem.
    Good luck!

  • My iPod playlists are deleted every time I plug my iPod into my MacBook Pro.

Every time I plug my iPod into my MacBook Pro, my iPod playlists are deleted.  I have all the sync features turned off on both the iPod and computer.  What is happening?  I hate having to remake my "Workout" playlist everytime I plug in!

Correct.  All sync features are turned off and if is 'manually manage' somewhere, I have checked the box to do so.  So basically everything is set for me to manage manually, yet my iPod playlists are still being deleted.

  • If i have Time Machine backed up on an external hard drive, do i just plug the drive into another macbook pro and all my stuff is in the new computer?  also, does it matter if the new computer is running Lion when the backed up info came from Snow Leopard

If i have Time Machine backed up on an external hard drive, do i just plug the drive into another macbook pro and all my stuff is in the new computer?  Also, does it matter if the new computer is running Lion when the backed up info came from Snow Leopard 10.6.8?

    No and Yes
Don't use TM for this purpose, clone your drive to an external, plug the external into another MBP and reboot from it. Please note that booting a machine that came with Lion may not be possible from a drive with Snow Leopard.

    Hello there, sarhang27753.
First thing that would come to mind to resolve the issue would be SMC and PRAM resets. I've linked Knowledge Base articles below:

  • Hi, I am trying to connect a WD Mybook for Mac to my airport/time machine device.  On the AirPort Utility it listed under Disks at 0 Mb.  I enabled file sharing.  But nothing happens.  If I plug it directly into my MacBook it works fine.  How do I fix it?

I am trying to connect a WD Mybook for Mac to my airport/time machine device.  On the AirPort Utility it listed under Disks at 0 Mb.  I enabled file sharing.  And also followed all the steps - "secured disk access: with a disk passord", "Airport disk guest access: read and write", "Share disks over WAN". But nothing happens.  If I plug it directly into my MacBook it works fine.  How do I fix it?  Also, its connected via a powered usb hub.

I assume that you are using  Mac operating system 10.4.11, as your profile indicates.
The instructions that you referenced are for use with AirPort Utility....not AirPort Admin Utility.
Suggest that you download and install AirPort Utility 5.4.2 for Mac , which will run on 10.4.11.
Also noticed that the instructions do not tell you that the hard drive should be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work with the AirPort Extreme, but they should.

  • How to plug a guitar into a macbook pro

hi i know im a big nooob!! but i need your help how do i plug a gitar into my 13inch macbook pro it only has one jack to plug it in to. now i know how to plug the guitar in and everything i have recorded twice with it just little things but how do i record so i can hear the gutar while im playing what do i do to to hear myself play while im playing  if this makes sense please help

There are many ways to record drums depending on what the final goal is and more important budget. You can start with one or two carefully placed mics to a mic on every drum and many will even add in some midi triggers.
If you have a Apogee One you could just use the built in mic and try experimenting with placement.
And you are going to want a set of headphones to monitor the playback not a speaker. A set of speakers and a open mic will feedback.

  • Thinking of replacing my macbook with an ipad for travel overseas, can I plug my iphone4 into the ipad for charging?

thinking of replacing my macbook with an ipad for travel overseas, can I plug my iphone4 into the ipad for charging?

    no
the USB does not out out enough power to charge anything.
And if you want to share chargers it's best to share your iPad charger with your iPhone. the iPad charger is a 10W charger, the iPod ones are 5W. So it'll charge, just not as fast as 'normal'
