Plugging camera in G5 via firewire showing up in Motion or FCP

I have a camera that I would like to plug into Motion or Final Cut Pro via the Firewire plug in my G5. Is it possible to have this live feed show up in Motion or FCP? I would also like to know if I could put a Green background in back of a subject as it's being fed into Motion or FCp to use a Green Screen?
Thanks in advance

Motion won't capture for you - FCP will. Neither is a live keyer... Although the talented Peter Wiggins has a plugin that will bring live iSight into the timeline, so I suppose you could use that to key with - I haven't tried it yet... See this thread:

I'm in the process of trying to get this information for a client. Even with a paid AppleCare agreement, the only answer I'm getting is "look in the forums" and "look on the developer site" (although I have to give credit to the Tier-1 rep who's trying to help me.) The impression I'm getting is that they consider an exact list of header names to be proprietary information for some reason, and are going to great pains to try not to give out the information, but also to not create ill will amongst their customers by explicitly saying "that's proprietary".

  • My new MacBook Pro and Imac can't recognize my digital video camera (Canon GL2) via FireWire 800 9 pin to 4 pin cable.

My new MacBook Pro and Imac can't recognize my digital video cameras (Canon GL2 or Sony) via FireWire 800 9 pin to 4 pin cable. I've tried two different cables.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Is your DV camera plugged in to AC power (not batteries only)? When you step down from 9 pins to 4 pins, you lose the "power" pins.

  • Final Cut Not Recognizing Camera/Devices Connected Via FireWire

I have a Macbook and a Macbook Pro and I'm having the exact same issue with both of them. I'm trying to capture DV footage into Final Cut Pro 5 via a Sony Digital Video Cassette Recorder GV-D1000 NTSC, I've also tried capturing into iMovie with the firewire device not being recognized there either.
Device control is "FireWire NTSC Basic" and Capture/Input is "DV NTSC 48 khz" I've captured footage plenty of times and never had a problem until now. I've tried just about every audio/video setting there is including anamorphic as I saw suggested in a similar thread and nothing has changed. I've also tried different firewire cables, different devices including canon/sony and a panasonic cameras. When I connect a new device it shows "vtr ok" for a few seconds and then switches to "no communication". I've tried trashing my preferences and repairing permissions. I've updated quicktime/restarted the macs/unplugged the devices etc. I've also tried playing the tape on the sony box first and then opening FCP and attempting to capture, the footage stops playing and I get an error message that "video is not available". I'm capturing to a 500gb external harddrive that I've used before with no problems and is connected via usb. At one point it did allow me to start the capture now process, but it kept dropping a million frames and aborting, now it won't even let me get that far. I'm literally pulling my hair out, can some one PLEASE, PLEASE HELP ME??!!?

Exactly what version of QT are you running now?...and FCP5.?
Have you tried the Guiness solution yet?..shut everything down and unplug, wait 15 minutes, plug all back in, then turn on camera/deck first.
Confirm that System Profiler recognizes the camera/deck and the deck is set in VTR mode (not camera mode), then open FCP.
Could be a bad FW port (have you tried other ports on the mac?)
    Or, could be QT incompatibility...

  • P2 Files Import Via Firewire

I have read on this forum that P2 Files can be imported into the mac via Firewire on the small 1/3" Panasonic Cams, Can the same method be used on the full sized P2 2/3" cameras if a firewire card is fitted ?.
Shane Ross thanks for the Huge amount of knowledge you have written on the new P2 cams.

    Hi tallguy,
HVX200 is not the same as the SPX800, I suspect that pana in it's wisdom decided to not have this camera output files via Firewire to the mac, just AV stream only.
there is no "Device" in the settings, just
    1394 TYPE
    1394 Audio In
    1394 Audio Out
    1394 Speed
    1394 IN CH
    1394 OUT CH
    1394 Control
    1394 CMD SEL
    1394 CONFIG
changing all or one make no difference to the out put, just AV, that's it.
I will investigate the USB connector on a windows box , or just get a P2 Store device.. documentation manuals assume to much and provide little.
Looks like SDI capture via my KONA LSe is the go.
    Cheers for the Advice

  • Second iMac as external monitor; Connection via firewire without a deck/cam

Second iMac as an external monitor; Connection by firewire without a deck/camera possible?
I spend a lot of hours to find an answer to the following question, unfortunately without any success:
I’m working with a new iMac (Intel, OS 10.4.11) and Final Cut. Additionally I have an old iMac (G3, OS 10.3.9).
I would like to use the FireWire port to transport a dv video stream from the new iMac/Final Cut to the old one so that the old one can be used as a monitor. So all I want is a software for the old iMac that shows an incoming FireWire dv-stream as a live picture.
I tried vlc, videoviewer, iMovie, Vidi and btv. The problem is always the same: Final Cut (on the new iMac) does not find any FireWire/dv-device nor do all these software on the old iMac find a connection to Final Cut. I think the problem is that both sides are seeking for a device-setup at the FireWire-port on the other side. And none of them sends a signal like „yes I’m here and waiting for a dv-stream“.
Another attempt was ScreenRecycler with VNC-client on the old iMac. Unfortunately on my old iMac Os 10.3.9 is the last possible OS and no vnc client on that system is fast enough to show a video in real time.
I also tried virtualDV from Apples FireWire SDK 20. It works so far, that it claims to be a dv-device (on the old iMac) and so Final Cut at the new iMac says: „okay I’ll deliver you that stream“. The problem now is that virtualDV only can record that stream, not show it in real time.
Is there any solution like virtualDV that shows a live preview and turns the iMac in a FireWire dv-device?
Is there any solution that Final Cut simulates to be a FireWire dv-device itself and that another computer finds that device and understand the dv-stream?
Thank you very much for your help.

    Don't think this is possible.
You're better off using a DAC (for example the one made by Canopus) and put your DV in and get a compatible signal out the other end for connection to your monitor.
I don't understand why you would want to go through a computer first, it would be a waste of time and add a huge delay to the signal.
Finally, I wouldn't use a computer monitor as an external display, it would be useless in my experience. Why not just preview on the one you've got by going full screen in FCP? Also using a computer monitor as a preview/output monitor is not a good idea since it's so different from a normal TV and won't show the correct colour space or issues such as flickering and interlace problems, underscan etc etc.
Seems like you're using a sledgehammer to crack a very small nut and that would be to use a DV camera via firewire and then connect up a monitor from that. (again using a convertor box if you have a connection problem.)

  • Displaying fullscreen images from camera via firewire

I have clients that want to be able to see the image I take with my camera instantly after I take it. So I hook my camera to my MacBook Pro via firewire, take the shot at the camera and then I WANT the image to appear full screen or close to full screen size on my laptop. I had one poster on another forum say that Aperture can do this. I can't figure out how. Any ideas?

You can absolutely do this - although depending on your camera it might more likely be via USB. What you're describing is tethered shooting. I do it all the time with my D300 and it works perfectly. You can set yourself up in fullscreen mode and watch your pictures come up within a few seconds of shooting.
If your camera is supported you simply plug it in (via usb or firewire - usually usb), select File>Tether>Start Session and you're ready.
When I'm shooting still life, I like to fire a shot or two, do a few quick adjustments to get the look I'm after and stamp the keepers as I go along and refine the setup. It's a great way to get a real feel for what you're attempting.
There's a list of supported cameras on the Aperture site- I don't have the link handy though.
    Good luck!

  • Fcpx via firewire No Data from Panasonic camera

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Pro 2011 64 bit with FCPX.  My camera is Panasonic AGDVC200E DV Cam.  Connection is via Firewire DV out of camera in to firewire 800 in mac.  System profiler "sees" the Camera serial number.  FCPX "sees" the camera when I go to import media, but when I hit the import button, I get a message "no data from Camera can't import".  The camera works with all my other windows laptops & pcs, so I know it's not the DV out of the camera.  I've changed cables so it's not the cables.  I've imported from other mini dv cameras into the macbook firewire port using the same lead so  it's not the firewire in of the mac.  I've checked the settings in the camera, macbook (inso far as I know what to check).  I've plugged both camera and macbook into mains while doing all of this.  Has anyone any idea how to get my camera to work with fcpx?  (Incidently, imovie doesn't even "see" the camera, even though profiler can,  so I can't try that..  I've wrestled with this problem since I got the Macbook in 2011, I really thought I'd find a solution I even bought an express card to usb connecter & firewire express card thinking ths would work without success.  Any help appreciated.
    Snoozein

I've no idea what the solution is, but if you haven't done it already, a longshot would be to trash the prefs with the free app below.
It'll only take seconds and just might help.
Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.
There is absolutely no danger in trashing preferences and you can do it as often as you like.
The preferences are kept separately from FCP X and if there aren't any when FCP X opens it automatically creates new ones  .  .  .  instantly.

  • External HDs not showing up on computer via firewire and usb

All external hds do not show up on the computer via firewire or usb. I must have perfomed some updates with my hardware plugged in. Does anybody know how to get this fixed?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.3.9 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
    Good Luck!
    Cheers!

My old computer was another Mac Tower  about 6 years old, broken and unrepairable.  So, it was time for a new one.
Oop's  I just found my problem.  I had my 2 HD's pluged into my original monitor, but I just realized that monitor needs an adapter  to get to my new computer's Firewire plug.
I guess it's a tripto the Mac Store.

Get info then check permissions then add your curent user name (it was probably different on old Mac) and give your username full read/write permissions.

  • Problem importing video from a DV camera into the new imovie 10.0?  I have a Sony DCR TRV17 connected via Firewire port that worked in 9.0.9 but not under 10.0...

I have a Sony DCR TRV17 that I used to pass through VCR tape video via Firewire port to my Mac Pro under Imovie 9.0.9 without an issue.   Now under Imovie 10.0 the video shows in the import window, I can start recording yet when I stop recording the recorded clips do not show up anywhere.  The movie file I'm creating still indicates that I still need to import video.   Anyone having similar problems?

    Hey Dave,
I had this issue only once before but was lucky enought to find it was a specific event causing the import to freeze. It took me some time to isolate the problem though. I would recommend letting it sit there for some time before you try any troubleshooting. Larger libraries can take long periods of time to update.
This is a good thread for this issue.  I would first try removing the iMovie.plist as elikness mentions.
    1. Open Finder
    2. Click on "Go" in the menu bar.
    3. Click on Go To Folder on the dropdown menu.
    4. Type "~/Library/Preferences/" in the text field and click Go.
    5. Find the com.apple.iMovie(some number).plist file and move it to Trash.
Quit and relaunch iMovie to see if this took care of the issue before attempting the next step. If you're still having an issue then you can try what I needed to do which is isolating the problem event.
    1. Open Finder.
    2. Go to the Movies folder. You should see iMovie Events here.
If you have a larger event library I'd recommend renaming the iMovie Events folder to say, "iMovie Events COPY". Then create a new empty folder named “iMovie Events”. When you launch iMovie 9.0.9 all events will be missing at this point. Quit iMovie if it is open. Then you can either drag each event from iMovie Events COPY to iMovie Events or you can select and drag several at a time. Each time you drag an event folder back into the new iMovie Events folder launch iMovie 9.0.9 to see if you are having the same issue. Wash and repeat until either you have found the problem event or you have imported all events.
If you find the problem event you can reimport the clip from iMovie 9.0.9 by going to File > Import > Movies and navigating to that events iMovie Original Movies folder to find the clip.
    Hope this helps!
