Plugging in the firewire 800 cable shuts down the computer

This is strange and frustrating. I upgraded the memory and when i inserted the FW 800 cable back in, the computer simply shut off. I reset Pram & Logic board to no avail. Any idea what's happening? All the other ports work fine... Thanks

If you take out the RAM you recently added, does it make the FireWire port work again?

  • Plugging in my Firewire 800 Drive Shuts down power on Macbook

I plug in my G Drive Mobile 500GB drive (Bought at the Apple Store) And the moment the metal of the Firewire 800 drive hits the metal of my connector it cuts all power and the Computer shuts down. I can keep the Firewire in the computer and start it back up but it wont recognize.
For the record the drive works completely fine with just USB... Also my Apogee Ensemble works perfectly well in the Firewire 800 port.
Any idea what I should do?

Me three. EZQuest Monsoon 250 Gig hard drive, and I've done a tiny bit more troubleshooting: it happens whether the hard drive is turned on or not (haven't had a chance to try it when the drive isn't even plugged in), and it doesn't make any difference which end of the Firewire cable I plug in first: as soon as the connection is complete, the MacBook shuts down. After the shutdown, it doesn't think it has a battery, but most of the time this resolves itself after a couple of restarts. I haven't tried things like zapping the PRAM. Very annoying, since the hard drive is my primary backup, and I plug it in to my Mac every evening when I get home! I'll just have to shut the Mac down every time I leave work, I guess.

  • External Firewire 800 Drive Shuts Down

I am using an external Other World Computing hard drive enclosure with a Seagate 2 TB Barracuda XT drive formatted as a single volume. The drive seems to be in proper working order and I haven't lost any data. However, every once in a while the drive power light will go off and the drive will go off line. Then it attempts to mount, but isn't able to.
I have experienced this behavior with 2 Seagate drives in different enclosures, so it doesn't seem to be a problem with the drive or enclosure itself. Could this be a problem with the Firewire 800 port on my Mac Pro?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    -Michael

Do your external enclosures use an external Power Supply? You may be drawing too much power from the FireWire cable. This problem is much more common with unpowered USB drive enclosures that have limited ability to get power from USB.

  • The Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 cable?

I have a JVC digital video camera, and have lost some of the cables. Will a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 cable connected with a Firewire 800 - Firewire 400 cable (same as ieee1394?) transfer the videos to my MacBook Air?

The Thunderbolt to FW 800 cable provides a FW800 port that you can plug into. You can see what it looks like here.  If you have a FW cable that will connect to your camera and terminates in a FW800 plug, that should work.

  • Firewire 800 cable connection on 2011 MacBookPro

Hello, I'm really having  a hard time finding others online with this problem but we do photo/video and use a Firewire GRAID mini for transferring footage on location, it uses the Firewire 800 cable, the one that came with it as well as third party cables you can buy at radio shack (plastic ends), do not stay plugged in very well and it's really nerve racking when these things come unplugged while Final Cut is doing I/O, and this is not just the drive , they don't firmly sit inside the socket on the Macbook Pro, so our problem is doubled.
Has anyone a good recommendation on a FW800 cable that will solve our problems? I know I've seen some before on other drives that were metal ends and slightly oversized that would stay seated quite well in the Mac, wish I knew where to find those...
(* I know Thunderbolt is the future, we are using Thunderbolt for our studio drives, but want to keep using our phantom powered Firewire GRAID minis for portable work for another year if possible)

    Applefutbol,
I'm not sure of the technical details, but I have certainly found that since starting to use FW800 instead of (and sometimes alongside) FW400, my hard drives seem to be a lot more responsive. One of my portable drives, for instance, has both 400 and 800 connectivity. On my desktop I have it connected via FW800 and it is lightning fast when transferring files, but it is distinctly slower when connected via FW400 to the same computer and others.
I'd borrow a cable from someone and test it first, but I do think you'll find it faster in general.
However, if the HV20 is only using FW400, then you will not get any speed increase, as FW works at the speed of the slowest connection.

  • Firewire 800 cable stopped working

I've had two different Firewire 800 cables burn out on me this week.  Both times, I accidently unplugged the cable from a WD drive.  When I try to use the cable again (with any device), it doesn't work.  I can swap the cable out and everything seems to work fine.  Do firewire 800 cables really break this easily?

Thanks Nick.  The Iomega is the only external drive with which I have experienced any problems so I guess I wasted my money and will need to try another brand.

  • Mini Firewire 800 Cables???

I have been searching around the net in hopes of finding a really really small firewire 800 cable which I could use to connect two mobile hard drives together...I have the two drives stuck together with industrial strength velcro, and the ports of the two drives are about an inch apart from each other...I am in need of a Firewire 800 cable that is about 3" inches in length...
I actually have one of these that came with some accessory device I bought a while back (can't recall which accessory exactly)...but I have had no luck finding such a cable for sale individually...I've searched most major computer cable stores online and have had not luck whatsoever...
I was hoping someone might be able to provide me with a link to some site out there that sells cables this short???
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

This white Belkin FireWire 800 cable has 18" (45cm). I find this a convenient length (not your desired 3", though

  • Firewire 800 Cables

I have just changed from Mac Pro with SATA to an iMac i5 so am now trying to get the best from Firewire 800 with RAID0 and 5 drives I was using with SATA. What I noticed was that using a Lacie Flat Firewire 800 cable I was getting just 26Mb/s Read times using Quickbench yet change the cable to the thicker cable that came with the drive I got 85Mb/s from the same drive, some difference.
My question is this, does anyone else have recommendations for good quality Firewire 800 cables because it clearly makes a difference?

Are you sure those cables are 9-pin (fw800) to 6-pin (fw400) cables? I bought a couple of 9pin/6pin cables from monoprice to hook up a couple of external fw400 drives and the cables worked fine.
Here's the link to the cable I am using:

each time i try syncing my ipod with itunes, it freezes itunes and i end up having to shut down my computer.  This started happening after the latest download and my latest purchase.  The latest purchase doesn't show up on my iPod and itunes freezes at synching step 2 on 2.  Any suggestions?

You should Reset your iPod, by
    1. Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 Secs till the Apple Logo comes ON.
    2. Disconnect the sync cable.
    3. Check the iPod Welcome screen, select language, go to menu (if you are lucky, your music are still on the iPod.)
if your iPod doesn't show the Welcome screen, bring it to Apple Store.
If the above is okay, (can see Menu but no Music)
    4. Close iTunes and Reboot your PC.
    5. Start iTunes
    6. Connect the iPod to the Sync cable.
    7. if iTunes ask to Restore, please do so.
    8. Sync your iPod. ( I would advise you to disconnect from Internet and stop the Antivirus program when doing this.)
    Good Luck.

  • HT1338 What firewire 800 cable do I use?

What firewire 800 cable do I use to connect my mac mini (late 2009) to my Panasonic HDD camcorder?

If a standard FW800 cable is recomended for your camera, use that, if the camera needs a mini connector use that.
Only you know what is on your camera

  • When I turned my Macbook on and signed in, it has been shutting down automatically and restarting itself immediately after opening the desktop. The error message said, I'd shut down my computer unexpectedly. How can I get it to stop shutting down on me?

Since downloading OS X Mavericks, my computer has been shutting down midway of starting up. Please help! The problem began after downloading the software free update. Now when I start my computer, it will starts up normal but when the desktop appears, there will be an error message that I shut down my computer because of an error and if I would like to open the applications that were open before the sudden shut down I should press continue. Then when I select continue, it will open up another communication window that my computer is restarting because of an error. Then the screen will revert to shutting down and restarting again. This has been going on now all morning. Can someone hlep me on how to resolve this issue?

Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Do they launch OK while in Safe Mode?

  • Has the "You shut down your computer because of a problem" message changed?

When I restart the computer after a Kernal Panic I get the message "You shut down your computer because of a problem. Click Report to see detailed information and send a report to Apple"; 2 buttons are shown: "Ignore" and "Report...". For some time now, when I click on "Report..." the message disappears but I used to get a window allowing me to type in information about (something like) what I was doing prior to the problem occurring with a button (something like) 'Send Report". Since the "Report" button now causes the message to disappear, is a Report still going to Apple? Thank you.

    Open Console app
View the System Diagnostic Reports by clicking on the disclosure triangle next to it in the log list. If the log list isn't visible, click the Show Log List button.
Look for the latest report starting with "kernel"
Select the report and it will show in the pane on the right.
Select everything in the report except the Anonymous UUID.
Copy and paste it into a reply here.
