Plugging in Thunderbolt cable causes system freeze

I own a MacBook Pro 15" with Retina display, running 10.8.3, with 16GB RAM.
Both TB ports are used; one has a Matrox DS1 dock connected to it, the other has three FW800 external HDDs connected to it (daisy chained). Whenever I need to go mobile, I disconnect all devices properly, by clicking the Eject icons for every device through the Finder.
When I reconnect the TB port that has the three FW800 drives connected to it, I get a system freeze, with only the pointer remaining operative. I even close the lid, but the display remains lit.
All three drives have been in use before, most recently with the MacBook Pro 17" 3,1 that was replaced by the MBP with Retina. I would've certainly thought that maybe the Matrox dock could've been the culprit.
Any thoughts on where/how to begin troubleshooting? Thanks.

Sounds like it's the computer itself not the player. Power issue of some sort. Does the player work correctly? I wouldn't be plugging it in that computer anymore till the problem gets solved. It may be the service pack. The Hp computers(desktops) that have AMD processors were having problems with that service pack update.

  • ITunes Causing System Freezes

After playing a CD or listening to my music library for a while, I get random freezes; eg spinning beachball in iTunes. It happens when an album is finished or a playlist is finished and I go back to iTunes to eject or quit or play a new playlist. Freezes. When I try to click Apple (in order to click on Force Quit), it isn't available...the beachball rules. The only thing I can do with the cursor is click on Finder in the Dock; or the desktop area outside of open apps. Cmnd+Q doesn't work. Cmnd+esc doesn't work. CmndoptnQ doesn't work. Cmndoptnesc brings up the force quit dialogue. That leads to a "force finder to quit?" dialogue. A couple times I've had to resort to hard rebooting.
Suggestions would be appreciated; but another issue is the fact that this is causing system freezes and I was under the impression that the cool thing about OS X is that one app won't cause system freezes.
There's another similar thread titled 'it crashes', but system freezes aren't mentioned.
    Any ideas?

Still doing it...but I give up on getting any help.

  • Change working mode on X-Fi Titanium Fatality cause system freeze

    Hi.
Using X-Fi Titanium Fatality soundcard and latest beta driver. But then I need change working mode (from Game to Audio Creation or Audio Creation to Game) it's cause system freeze. And only hard reset helps. No errors message or error logs in system.
This problem appear only if I played any games in Game mode and after want listen music in Audio mode. If don't play any games or listen music, you can change modes multiple times without problem.
I try clean Windows 7 installation and problem is still here.

  • X200s Wireless Randomly Turning off Causing System Freeze

    Hi,
I've run into a problem recently with my 2009 x200s running Windows 7 Home edition.
Over the last day I noticed that after doing between 5-10 minutes of wireless web browsing, the system freezes.  The exact moment this happens, I also notice that the wireless indicator just below the LCD goes from active to inactive.  Further, while no amount of key-pressing does anything, including ctrl-alt-del, I can, amazingly, turn on/off the thinkpad lcd nightlight!  The only way to recover from this is to press down on the power button for 5 seconds and reboot.
Then, 5-10 minutes later, the random freeze repeats.  That is, with the wireless indicator light doing from green to dark.
By the third time this occured, I got a hint. I checked the event logs for anything unusual.  Nothing.
I'm running a current version of Avast! antivirus and ran a Malwarebytes scan, again, nothing!
I'm at my wit's end.  Any ideas from Lenovo gurus?
    Help!
    Best,
    Dave

    Ok, an update.
The freezing occurred while working in the library.  That hadn't been a problem previously.  So, why today?
I went home and tried it again.  Everything seemed to work fine.
So, I guess my question now is this: Why would my x200s wireless connection stop working in a public access point causing a freeze in Win7 while working just fine at home??
    Odd....

  • Dashboard causing system freeze

I have just upgraded from a G5 iMac to an Intec iMac - I find that when I select dashboard the windows come "in" to about halfway and then the system freezes and a cold restart is necessary (never happened on the G5 with the same widgets). This doesn't happen every time but much too often - I guess I have a rogue widget, how do I determine which one? - John.

    John Ross4 wrote:
Mihalis, Is there any way I can determine which are Universal and which are not? - John.
The following shows a way to determine if a Widget is Universal.
    iStat pro.wdgt/iStatPro.bundle/Contents/MacOS $ file iStatPro
iStatPro: Mach-O fat file with 2 architectures
iStatPro (for architecture ppc): Mach-O bundle ppc
    iStatPro (for architecture i386): Mach-O bundle i386
But, the first first you should do is determine which Widgets are causing you the problems. Unistall them all and install them one by one until you find the problematic ones.

  • Spaces causing system freeze and logout

Recently (probably within the last 2-3 weeks) I've been having some issues with switching between spaces. It doesn't happen every time, but occasionally when I switch to another space my entire computer will freeze in the middle of the animation. After a few seconds, my screen will go blue and I'll get logged out.
    Anybody else ever encounter this?

I have a similar problem with Spaces under OS X 10.6.4 on my MacBookPro5,3.
When I use Spaces from the keyboard to switch contexts to another window, the screen switching icon "sticks" to the display, and the keyboard only responds to the Spaces switching keystroke and some of the other "special" keys. However, the mouse continues to work, and I'm sometimes able to attempt a restart from the apple menu. But, the system still hangs about 50% of the time, forcing me to do a hard reset by holding down the power button.
I have had the blue screen experience once or twice, but I don't think it's related.
Other users where I work have reported nearly similar experiences with Spaces causing a system freeze.
I have, about 50% of the time, been able to use the mouse to disable other currently running utilities, one at a time, until the screen has become responsive. These utilities include:
    Quicksilver
    ClipMenu
    TypeIt4Me
    ShoveBox
It could be one of these is the culprit (my money's on ClipMenu and Quicksilver at the moment.)
I've also logged in via SSH from another machine and started whacking processes with some limited success. It seems there's some collision there with other running utilities, but I'm not sure what.
At this point, my only option is to disable Spaces and muddle through with a single desktop. Spaces crashes my system so consistently that it's not usable.
Sorry I don't have any other ideas to offer at this point.

  • Safari causes system freeze during page load

    Description:
I've been trying to figure this one out for a while now (about 2 weeks), without any luck. I've tried reading a couple of threads describing similar problems, but it looks like I've got something else going on here seeing as it affect the entire system. I appreciate any suggestion!
When a window in Safari is open and you're loading a page, it sometimes (almost always) causes a system freeze. Any action performed on any input device within OSX while a page is loading gets delayed by 5-20 seconds. Anything from right-clicking, to opening a new tab in Safari, to navigating to a new folder in Finder.... literally anything. The actual loading of the page is also affected by this. So when I click a link, the page becomes white and the system stalls. After X seconds, the system resumes and the page is displayed fully loaded. Once the page is loaded, everything is back to normal. I can just leave the Safari-window open without anything happening. It's just during the loading of a page.
Using the mouse to move and switch between open windows are the only actions I seem to be able to perform during the system freeze.
When it doesn't cause a system-wide freeze, it will still take forever for any page to load. Which isn't a problem in any other browser and I've never had any speed issues in general on any device.
What I know for sure is that I can solve the problem by closing all open Safari-tabs and windows or closing the app completely, and use Chrome instead. But I do like Safari, so I hope there's another way to fix this.
I should also note that I've made no changes to the system for many weeks now, other than installing whatever updates might have been available on the App Store.
    What I've tried within Safari:
    - program restart
    - reset settings (every option checked)
    - disable and remove extensions (only had one installed, LiveReload for Adobe Brackets)
    - empty cache
    - delete cookies
    What I've tried within OSX:
    - system restart
    - complete OSX-recovery
    - activity monitor (CPU, HDD and RAM always within normal values during all of this)
    - checked HDD (successfull)
    - checked internet-connection (got 50Mbit/s connection, no speed issues, checked on multiple devices)
    - tried other browsers (Chrome (OSX) and IE (Win 7, Parallels) both run smoothly)
    - turned off IPv6 in terminal (based on a suggestion here at the forums)
    - disabled iCloud-sync
    - disabled Dropbox
    - probably a couple of other things i can't remember right now

    So... I finally fixed it.
In addition to the things I mentioned I tried, I also checked if it could be malware-related. It wasnt. I then checked if it was just affecting my user-account or OSX globally. I created a new account and Safari ran perfectly. I therefore assumed it had to be something in my library-folder.
I deleted just about any mention of Safari in the Library-folder (the visible one) and just to be absolutely sure, I deleted the Contents-folder inside Safari.app in the Applications-folder. I then downloaded and installed Safari 7.0.3. Everything runs smooth now.

  • Is it OK to plug/unplug Thunderbolt cables with power on?

I know USB does not require power down first, but Thunderbolt?

If you're unplugging a drive - be it Thunderbolt, USB, FireWire 800 - be sure and unmount the drive(s) before disconnecting the Thunderbolt cable.

  • Java Causing System Freeze / Lockup

    Hey guys,
Ok after days of having my system seem to lock up for no reason I think I've tracked down the culprit. It seems that any time the JRE is accessed on my machine it causes a lockup. I've tried the following and each results in a system lockup.
Trying to uninstall using the Control Panel
Trying to verify version using Firefox / Chrome / IE
Trying to reinstall using the offline downloadable
I launch into safe mode and I can verify the version using Firefox / Chrome / IE. So I was thinking maybe some program was preventing it and causing all this so I uninstalled my nod32 antivirus. I shutdown SpySweeper. I disabled my firewall. I then went an uninstalled my graphics driver and turned off every program that was running.
And still it froze when attempting to even verify the current installed version. And any attempts to uninstall fail with a freeze. I also found a program that was supposed to remove old versions but that didn't help me at all.
Any help would be most appreciated guys as I've been banging my head on this for a while now.

You seem to focus very much on Java. But more likely the problem is in your OS, because otherwise reinstalling Java would certainly work. What OS are we talking about here? I see IE so it must be a variant of Windows, but which one?

  • Itunes/Coverflow causes System Freeze.

Anyone else having this issue? A few days ago after updating my system to the latest version, my system kept freezing out of no where. Well today I found out that coverflow in itunes, was the problem and everytime I use coverflow my system would freeze up eventually.

I have sent a post lately on another discussion about my itunes crashing: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6747610#6747610
Now I know that the problem is the Cover Flow display options. I get a spinning beach ball only while i'm surfing in the Cover Flow window and then i got nothing to do except restart my MacBook Pro. Since my 10.5.2 and 7.6.1 upgrade the cover flow in itunes is freezing my Mac.
Everything's fine (i've tested it for hours) if i'm not using the cover flow display.
My macbook pro is 5 months old.

  • Object spy on a pdf causes system freeze and reader crash

    Hi,
When I try to spy on a a pdf the reader crashes, the Object spy freezes and I have to restart the machine to get back control.
It also makes IE8 crash if its an embeded pdf.
My configuration is QTP 11, IE8, XP,  Adobe Reader 9.4 and the latest version of the tool kit.
It works fine if I try to run one of the sample test scripts that come with the tool kit.
The odd thing is that while I'm able do an Alt+Ctrl+Del and open the task manager I'm not able to do anything with it. It seems like the object spy has hijacked the mouse and wont let the system respond.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi
We have lately found that due to some of our changes in Reader 10.1.2 release, the plugins have broken.
They still continue to work with Adobe Reader 10.1.0 and 10.1.1 ON ANY ENVIRONMENT WITH ANY QTP VERSION.
For the time being, before Adobe roll out a fix, we would suggest you not to upgrade the Adobe Reader versions.
    Thanks and Regards

  • System froze when I plugged in ethernet cable, was this the cause?

I had wifi on when using the net, and then I plugged the ethernet adaptor into the thunderbolt port and plugged the ethernet cable into the adaptor, the system froze, the mouse or pad wouldnt work, so I forced shutdown,
was plugging in ethernet the cause of the system freeze? Should I have turned off wifi prior to plugging in ethernet?
Or should I not plug in ethernet while the laptop is on?

System.log  -- I'm using Lion, not Mountain Lion, but for me, one opens the Console application (in the Utilities folder) and look along the left side panel for system.log.
Also in the Console application you can look at DIagnostic and Usage Messages and also at All Messages. You'll be looking for something that sounds like a problem at the exact time that your freeze occured.
I've been doing this "hot plugging and unplugging" of the ethernet cables for years with several Mac laptops going through 10.6 and 10.7 (probably have done this a few thousand times) and have never actually experienced any issues while doing it. The area where I have seen some issues is with the laptops sleeping and not waking up properly, once in a while this has happened, but that's not related to what you had happen. Again, I was using 10.6 and am now on Lion (10.7) [employer hasn't upgraded us all to Mountain Lion, although that will happen shortly], so 10.8 might be a little different.

  • Zen Micro Freezes when I plug in USB cable+USB not recognized at ti

Ok, I know you, the reader, has heard this complaint posted over and over on the Creative forums, and you would probably tell me to SEARCH THE FORUMS. Well, I did, and I found no answer or solution to my problems. So..here goes nothing.
I recently purchased a Black 5gb Creative Zen Micro, I was really content and happy with it...that is until I plugged it into my USB 2.0 Card. The moment I do that (I've tried plugging it in into every USB 2.0 slot, and NO, this isn't a hub, but a PCI card), The Zen Micro freezes! I have to resolve this by removing the cover and taking out the battery, then reinserting the battery. At the same time my Zen Micro freezes, a little bubble pops up on my computer screen saying "USB Device Not Recognized". I'm going absolutely out of my mind here, and am on the verge of returning the Zen Micro, and might get a replacement, and if that doesn't work, just returning the Zen altogether for a refund and getting a Rio Carbon. I really like the Zen, so PLEASE PLEASE help me out here!
Things I've Tried That Did Not Work:
-Uninstall/Reinstalling Zen Explorer, Mediasource (basically everything on CD)
-Updating the drivers for Zen Micro found on Nomadness.net
    -Updating Firmware for Zen Micro
-Going into rescue mode and cleaning up, Formatting, reloading firmware, and rebooting.
-Trying the USB 2.0 Card in different PCI Slots
-Rotating the order in which I connect the USB cable to Zen Micro and PC
-Uninstalling/Reinstalling the drivers, even when the Zen Micro pops up as "Unknown Device"
    -Reading tips/hints on Nomadness.net
I have scoured the forums, and have not found anything useful or new. I know its not the USB 2.0 Card's problem, since I plugged in my USB mouse into all the ports on the USB Card, and it worked fine.
Note: When I plug the USB cable that came with the Zen Micro into the integrated USB slots on the motherboard (USB .), it at times, does work, but even then, not a high chance of it happening. Even if I do successfully connect the Zen to a USB . slot without it freezing up, the Zen ends up not being detected by any program, like Window Media Player, Mediasource, or Creative Zen Micro Explorer.
I am going out this weekend and am gonna try to buy a new USB Cable, and if that doesn't work, returning the cable, and returning the Zen Micro to be replaced. AND IF THAT DOES NOT WORK...GOODBYE CREATIVE! HELLO RIO! But please, any help you guys could give would be greatly appreciated. I will also try to contact Creative Customer Support, but I doubt they'll tell me anything new, if I could even connect to them without being put on hold.
    System Specs:
    Windows XP Professional SP2
    Creative Zen Micro Firmware .02.05
    USB 2.0

Yep, that's exactly my issues to.....no matter what I've done, including replacing the USB 2.0 card which WAS and Adaptec DuoConnect 2.0 card which works fine with every other USB device ever connected to it, the Zen Micro 6g is NOT recognized by Creative Media Source or WMP. It is only recognized by the PC in Device Manager, and it has a yellow marker on it, which tells me the drivers are not installed. I know I don't need the drivers installed, but even after installing them, it tells me the drivers are not installed.
However, the answer is: it's definitely not the Micro, since it works flawlessly on my other PC and on my Toshiba notebook. So, it's some compatibility issue on that one PC. Since I refuse to let things be, I am reformatting that PC, reinstalling from scratch with WinXP and sp2. This PC has WinXP Pro but it has other issues so a reformat is in order anyway. Hopefully, this will resolve the issues. If not, then I say it's incompatibility with the Intel 865Perl m.b. But I'm at a loss as to why it won't work when plugged into the Adaptec card too.

Do I absolutely need to connect the power supply together with the thunderbolt cable ?
I found that the screen won't wake up if only the thunderbolt connection is plugged. Is this normal ?

I just got my ATD and late 2011 MBP up and running. I've not tried running without the power adapter from the ATD plugged in, but I just tried and didn't have any problems with the display not waking. You may want to take your query to the ATD forum - https://discussions.apple.com/community/peripherals/thunderbolt_display - perhaps someone there has experienced a similar issue.
