Plugging iPhone into PC turns PC off

Every time I plug my iPhone into my PC it will not recognize the phone and will result in a shut down of the computer. Why is this happening?

eirkare,
There are a couple of possibilities.
Does the computer power off, or does it just restart?
If it just restarts it could be because of a Blue Screen error. Windows XP got rid of a lot of "blue screen" error seen in previous version by defaulting to restarting on its own without showing the blue screen.
The most common blue screen with the iPhone is because of drivers for other hardware trying to treat the iPhone as something it isn't. For example a web camera's driver trying to access the iPhone as a web camera, or a scanner driver trying to access the iPhone as a scanner. Usually that can be resolved by downloading the latest version of the driver for the other device. This article has more details:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306048
If it is actually powering off, and not restarting, it could be related to your power supply. Have you added any internal hardware or USB devices since you got the computer?
Hope this helps,
Nathan C.

My iPhone 3GS keeps turning itself off all the time the power/sleep button dosent work so it's quiet annoying having to plug it in all the time dose anyone have a fix for this?

The "fix" is to get the phone repaired.  There's no magic solution for a broken phone.
Bring your phone ant $149 to Apple for an out of warranty replacement, or find a 3rd party repair shop near you.

  • HT1296 Since I downloaded iOS 7, my iPhone is constantly turning itself off and the battery useage is twice what it used to be.  I want iOS 6 back!  How do I uninstall iOS 7?

I downloaded iOS 7.0.2, and now my iPhone 5 keeps turning itself off and the battery useage is twice what it was.  I want iOS 6 back!  How do I uninstall iOS 7?>

So, after it charged and was still plugged in, I deleted the Exchange account and then reset it holding down the sleep wake buttons until the apple logo appeared. I also changed the limit on my emails to 3 days instead of 1 week.  It turned on, so I turned it off and let it charge overnight.  This morning, it stayed on for 3 whole hours and then shut itself off again.  I had to try 5 times to get it to come back on.  Now, a message appeared that Exchange cannot verify a server, I can't see the full name of the server anymore, but it is *.hotmail.com GlobalSign Root CA from Microsoft. So I'm selecting Accept to see what happens.  I'm very discouraged, I need my phone to be reliable for my work.  It was reliable for 11 months without one problem, and now since I downloaded iOS 7, it hasn't been on for one full day since.

  • Stolen Iphone. They turned it off, and it had a lock. What can they even do with it?

It was stolen from me, and I immediatly went and tracked it using find my Iphone. Apparently, it is turned off and has been for a few days. I have a lock on the phone, so they can't get into it. What can they do? If it is pawned to someone, won't it have to be turned on? I feel like at some point, they need to turn it on or it is nothing to them. Is this just a waiting game for me?

I'm confused about if they plug it in to restore it, will find my Iphone show the last known location on Icloud, or will that information be gone? I'm just trying to understand before I move on.
It depends how quick they are.  When an iPhone is power on, the location information is not instantly updated - it may take a few minutes before Location Services gets a stable location fix, find my iphone is activated and tries to talk to the iCloud servers, and the servers respond and the location information is exchanged.  And if they are inside, so GPS is impeded, then a location fix may take awhile as the system cycles through its options trying to get a location fix.
So if they power it up,plug it into iTunes, force recovery mode quickly enough, then it is unlikely the iCloud server will get the information before the wipe begins.
It just is not something you can count on as there are too many things that have to happen in succession, each with their own potential delays, and it really takes little time to power on an iOS device and initiate a restore.

  • My iPhone 4 is turning itself off after 40% battery life is surpassed.

Although I still have about 40% charge on the battery, the iPhone just turns itself off, like it has no battery life at all but when i plug it into the charger, it starts up again automatically and shows that I still have about 40-45% battery life available.  What is going on?  How do I try to recalibrate it if I can never get it to 0% battery life?  Please help.

Same case here, but mine is Iphone 3GS having 40-50% battery then a little moment boom, it shut itself off. How to fix this someone help.

    Hi there glee154!
I have an article here that can help you troubleshoot this issue with your iPhone. The article is about troubleshooting a multitude of iPhone hardware issues, and can be found right here:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
The specific section you will want to reference can be found here:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

  • IPhone 4 has turned itself off and will not power up. Tried all of the suggestions on Apple's site. No luck. Any help?

My iPhone 4 turned itself off, even though it is fully charged. It will not turn back on.
I tried the "hold down the button for ten or more seconds" remedy, to no avail.
I tried plugging it in to reset it using iTunes, but iTunes won't find the phone.
    What else can I do?
The nearest AT&T store is over 10 miles away and it's after closing time...
    Please help!

I seem to have found the answer by my own foolishness....
I held down the on/off button on top and the "belly button" on the front bottom and whoosh! it came back to life.
It would sure be nice if Apple would restore the Troubleshooting area of their website and include information like this so Luddites like myself could keep a lower blood pressure....

  • Enabling lock screen on 'find my iPhone' to disable turning it off.

I have noticed that when you do a remote lock on an iPhone from the 'find my iPhone' app, it does not disable the phone from being turned off; completely making the app useless.  If I lose my phone and someone snatches it, they just need to turn it off and they are home free (while they jailbrake it, or whatever).  There needs to be a way that when 'find my iPhone' is enabled to request the phone to go into an emergency mode that disables use (remote lock) and disables the phone from being turned off.  If anyone knows a way to accomplish please let me know so I can activate this on my daughters phone (we had a scare a couple days ago, but it turned out to be in her locker : )).  Thanks.

    Hello, Zane.
Thank you for the question.  You may need to place your device into recovery mode and process a restore as new.  Below, I have included and article that will walk you through this process.  Before you process the restore make sure to back up all media.

  • Why does the EQ (equalizer) function in the iPod settings (in my iPhone 4) keep turning itself off??

I'll notice my music sounds flat, too much treble, etc... go into iPod settings and sure enough the equalizer is set of OFF again.  I reset it to rock or bass boost or whatever.  And it then it might be another hour or 3 days later but it turns itself off again.  There doesnt seem to be a lot of rhyme or reason as to when it does this or why.  Annoying.   Any ideas?

  • Plug iPhone into TV and use TV as screen to surf internet/ck email?

My father is considering purchasing an iPhone. He wants to know if he can plug it into a TV and use the TV as a monitor while surfing the internet/checking his email via the iPhone. That way he would not have to travel with his laptop, and still get the benefit of the larger screen. He has received conflicting answers at retail outlets, and based on the User Guide, it appears that you can connect an iPhone to a TV, but only for viewing downloaded videos. Is this correct? Or is there someway he can use the TV as a monitor for suring the internet and checking his email?
Thanks so much for any advice.

With the correct cable, you can view videos from the iPhone on an external monitor but you cannot do anything else, i.e. surf, use apps, etc.
Windows Mobile devices can do this, i.e. they can display the mobile device's screen directly to a monitor. You can then use your mouse to control the mobile device. It's pretty slick - I often did it with my Dell PDA.

  • My iphone 4 has turned itself off and I cant get it back on, it had a full battery before it cut off.

My Iphone 4 has just turned itself off and I cant turn it back on. It had a full battery before it cut off so its definetly not the battery, however I have found recently that the battery has been running out really quickly. any ideas what to do? Thanks

    Try resetting your phone:
Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the Apple logo, then release.

  • IPhone 4 keeps turning itself off - Help !

So I've had this problem with my iPhone 4 for months now, and lately it seems to be getting worse. It used to randomly turn itself off when it had loads of battery at any time, and lately it's getting worse and worse. I take it off charge and it either turns off straight away, or it turns off within a few minutes.
When trying to turn it back on, the apple logo just appears and then it turns off again, and I cannot turn it back on properly until it is put back on charge. Even at that, sometimes when put back on charge the apple logo just appears and disappears sometimes, and doesn't actually turn back on.
I thought the battery was the issue so I had it replaced, but when I did so, the problem reappeared a day later. As I'm writing this I can't turn my phone on, but I'm almost 100% sure the software version on it is 6.1.2 if that's any help.  Somebody help me! Nobody else seems to be having this problem as far as I can tell either, so thanks in advance if somebody is able to put me out of my misery.

I would ask for another battery replacement just to ensure you didn't get a defective one, and if that doesn't do it you have some type of hardware problem on your hands.   I doubt it's a software issue - rarely does a phone just shut off like you're explaining unless it's physical hardware.

  • Iphone 4 just turned itself off, won't turn on again - sleep/wake button hasn't worked for a while - tried charging (even though it was 50% charged when it shut down) and that makes no difference....tried usb to computer and directo to wall socket. help?

phone 4 just turned itself off, won't turn on again - sleep/wake button hasn't worked for a while - tried charging (even though it was 50% charged when it shut down) and that makes no difference....either via usb to computer and direct to wall socket. Any suggestions...other than heading off to the genius bar tomorrow?

Well, the sleep/wake button is also the power button. If you cannot use it to turn on, then you cannot use it to perform a reset by holding it and the home button together until you see the Apple logo. Those are the only two ways to turn the device on. You can try letting the battery go completely dead and then trying to plug it in. After it has charged for 20-30 minutes, the device may come back on. But, without the sleep/wake button, there is no other way to turn the device on or off.
