Plugin container consumes massive system resources

When I play flash games on facebook, I notice after a few minutes that my computer seems to get slow and continues to be.
When I looked at the Task Manager, plugin-container.exe is using up to 1.2gb of my memory.
For example, the moment I no longer have Castleville running, it drops to about 40mb, which is alot more acceptable.
Before in version 10 of Firefox I could disable the plugin-container but now the option seems to disappear in version 11.
Please help, I wish to disable it so my computer can run normally. It's crazy that I can't just have only one tab open, to play Castleville for 5 minutes before it gets a little bogged down.
I've tried the suggestions for [[High memory usage|https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/High%20memory%20usage]] , but it hasn't helped or already done that before reading.
My Flash is up to date (11.2.202.233), Firefox is 11.0.
Any help would be appreciated to disable/ limit the plugin-container.

John99: I've had a look and it takes about 200Mb. There are some big sized components in the 'Other Measurements' of about:memory which I don't know.
319.51 MB -- vsize
191.18 MB -- private
175.11 MB -- resident
104.61 MB -- heap-committed
96.09 MB -- heap-allocated
jimloxley: Well the games in question I can't play offline unfortunately.
Funny thing is, it crash a day ago and got the exclamation mark on my flash game, but couldn't close any tabs, swap tabs or do anything. So went into Task Manager and ended plugin-container.exe, and then instantly I had functionality in Firefox again.

    Hello Guys,
I am using oracle 9i database release 1. My database server is too slow. I have checked the task manager of my server and in the processes tabs its showing that oralce is consuming 99% resources of my system. Memory and processor.
I have re-start my server twice... but as soon as oracle is initilaized! again oracle.exe consume 99% system resources.
All users are having difficulty. Pliz suggest me what to do? In details please.

There is no direct way to find out which background processes is taking so much of resources. The task manager will show only oracle.exe.
To monitor individual background processes of Oracle.exe processs in a Windows environment, you have to use a third party software like Quick Slice, a GUI-based standalone application from Microsoft.
The following link may help you.

  • When will you get rid of the resource hog, "Plugin-Container.exe"

Plugin-container-exe has a memory leak. When you go in and out of numerous web sites, it consumes more and more and more memory and turns my computer into a dog. Since the inclusion of the plugin-container, explorer is now a better browser.
    == This happened ==

== The last update that included plugin-container.

Are you serious that this is your "solution"? I did as you suggested -- changed the flags to "false" -- and now I restared Firefox with a mere 10 tabs open (no videos; just a few text pages, gmail, yahoo finance, barrons.com) and Firefox is consuming 1.1 gb of RAM. What's the reason behind this? It looks like whatever resources were being swallowed by plugin-container.exe are now being swallowed by Firefox itself, so that doesn't solve the problem.
Is Firefox a good idea taken too far? When it began, the Firefox project was a fast, nimble browser. Is it now too bloated and convoluted to be of any use? Is it a victim of its success?

  • Saying what plugin-container does is not a solution to the problem that it is a resource hog

https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forum/1/704242 claims to be a closed question because a "solution" was provided. What solution? You say what plugin-container is supposed to do, but you don't say how to disable it and still use plugins or whether anything is being done to address the resource concerns that were raised. It's a POS and should be fixed or eliminated.

  • My system is incompatible with the plugIn-Container of the versions 3.6 to 4.0 only compatible with 3.5.19 and below

    Hello,
I have a system AMD Athlon 64 2x 6000+ with windows XP Pro sp3 with 32 bit, dual core.
When I changed to Firefox 3.6.11 (I don't know what it was before) the Firefox crashes each time when I click on "tools/options", "File/open File" or if I try to download a file. The same happens with any version starting with 3.6.0
There is no message : the program is not responding, the sand clock is running and nothing happens. I reproduced this about twenty times. I have running the 4.0 beta version and the 3.5.16 version simultaneously.
The only answer I found in the internet is to change the name from firefox.exe to some other name (firefox1.exe). This doesn't work in my case. If there is any method to analyze exactly what happens I would like to try it. I only found out by looking in the administration tool of windows that the plugIn Container crashes all the time - with or without loading any plugIn. Starting in safe modus and several new clean installations didn't change anything.
I have firefox 3.6.13 running on another (Intel)system without problems but any version starting with 3.6 is not compatible on my AMD system.
I would like to upgrade my firefox one day - but if this is not solved I will never be able to.....
There are other people in the internet with the same problem - anyway to change the name from firefox to firefox1.exe is not a solution - in the best case a work-around.
    Please help me...
    Thommy

I'm having problems with FlashPlayerPlugin and plugin-container. They keep starting up and bogging down the system. This has been a recent occurrance. I've made sure that I have the latest version. I notice the problem when I am opening some applicatio, and it freezes. If I go to Task Manager, I can see the two Adobe apps sucking up CPU cycles. If I end the processes, then the other apps continue. Today, I uninstalled FlashPlayerPluginqand plugin-container. All day since I have had no freezing of an app. What should I do to correct the problem?

Here's an explanation of what those processes are.

I'm curious about what you did to uninstall just those.

  • Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service

[I did intend to start this post with a screenshot of the above error when I initiate the transfer from Windows Explorer, but apparently 'Body text cannot contain images or links until we are able to verify your account.' so I will just have to do some typing,
    viz the error dialog says:
'An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem.
Error 0x800705AA: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.'
I get this error pretty much 100% of the time from one particular PC when trying to copy a folder of 10 2GB files to a server with both mirror and parity storage spaces.
I recently purchased a Thecus W5000 running Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials. Absent any guidance either way I decided to set up a storage pool across the three 3TB WD Red drives that I have installed in it and to allocate 1.5TB of that space to a
mirror storage space and the remainder to a parity storage space. Having read some faily dire things about storage spaces, but wanting the resilience provided by those two types of storage space, I decided to run some benchmarking tests before finalising anything.
To that end I only went as far through the Essentials setup as creating a handful of user accounts before setting up the storage spaces and sharing both of them, with all authenticated users permitted full control. My benchmarking consists of a Take Command
batch file timing three large directory copies - one with 10 2GB files, one with 10240 10K files and another with a multi-level directory with a variety of files of differing sizes. The first two are completely artificial and the latter is a real world example
but all are roughly 20GB total size.
To test various aspects of this I copied the three structures to and then from a partition created on the internal disk (the W5000 has a 500GB SSHD) and to the two storage space partitions. I also created a version of the batch file for use internally which
did something similar between the internal disk and the two storage space partitions, and another as a control that tested the same process between the two Windows PCs. The internal test ran to successful completion, as did the PC to PC copy and the external
one from my Windows 8.1 64-bit system (i5 3570K, 16GB RAM, 1TB HD) but when I ran it from my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit gaming rig (i7 2600K, 8GB RAM, 1TB HD) I got a number of failures with this error from Take Command:
TCC: (Sys) C:\Program Files\bat\thecus_test_pass.btm [31] Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.
(where line 31 of that batch file is a copy command from local D: to the parity space on the Thecus).
The error occurs only when copying large files (the 2GB ones already mentioned but some of those in the real world structure that are about 750MB in size) from the Win7 system to the Thecus and only when doing so to the storage space volumes - ie. copying to
the internal disk works fine, copying from all volumes works fine, copying internally within the Thecus works fine, copying between the Win8 and Win7 machines works fine and initiating the copy as a pull from the server between the same two disks also works
fine. One aspect of this that surprised me somewhat was just how quickly the copy fails when initiated from Windows Explorer - checking out the details section of the copy dialog I see roughly ten seconds of setting up and then within five seconds after the
first file transfer is shown as starting the error dialog pops up (as per the image no longer at the top of this post).
There are no entries in the event log on either machine related to this error and I've had the System Information window of the Sysinternals Process Explorer up and running on both machines whilst testing this, and it shows nothing surprising on either side.
I've also run with an xperf base active and I can't see anything pertinent in the output from either system.
Frankly, I am at a loss and have no idea what other troubleshooting steps I should try. The vast majority of the existing advice for this error message seems to relate to Windows 2003 and memory pools - which both the fact that this works from one PC but not
the other and the SysInfo/xperf output seems to suggest is not the issue. The other thing I've seen mentioned is IRPStackSize, but again if that was the problem I would expect the failure to occur where ever I initiated the large file transfer from.

Ff it works from the win 8 box, it must be in the win 7 box?
I'm going to answer this one first because much of the rest of this is not going to be pertinent to the problem at hand. I've been over and over this aspect whilst trying to think this issue through and you are right, except that it only happens when copying
files to the Thecus and only then when the target is a ReFS partition on a mirror or parity storage space. So the best I can come up with is that it is most likely an issue on the Win7 box that is triggered by something that is happening on the server side,
but even that is a bit of a stretch. This is why the lack of information from the error message bugs me so much - in order to debug a problem like this you need to know what resource has been exhausted and in which part of the software stack.
Now that may not be easy to do in a generic way, and since programmers are inherently lazy it is tempting just to return a simple error value and be done with it. However, I've been in the position of doing just that in a commercial product and ended up
having to go back and improve the error information when that particular message/code was tripped and I was expected to debug the problem! Obviously there is a significant difference between a Microsoft consumer product and a mainframe product that costs many
times as much and comes with a built in maintenance fee, but the underlying requirement is the same - somebody needs to be able to solve the problem using the information returned. In this case that simply isn't possible.
You spend your time testing file copies, where I devote most of my time to backup and restore
I don't really want to be testing file copies - the initial intention was to benchmark the different storage space and file system combinations that I was intending to use but the error whilst doing so has spiralled into a cycle of testing and tweaking that
really isn't achieving anything. My primary reason for having a NAS at all has always been backup. My current strategy for the two boxes participating in this testing involves having a local drive/partition to hold backups, running a daily incremental file
copy to that partition which is then immediately copied to a NAS and backing that up with a regular (needs to be at least once per month to be totally secure) full image copy of the local disks that is also copied to the NAS afterwards (hence my fascination
    with copying large files).
There is a weakness in that strategy because I've never been very good at performing that full image backup regularly enough, so one of the reasons for buying the W5000 was the possibility of making those backups automatic and driven from the server end.
However, that takes the local backup drives out of the equation and leaves me with the need to backup the NAS, which I don't do with my existing unit because there are (nearly) always copies held elsewhere.
The other reasons for going with the Thecus were a desire to backup the other machines in the household - I've always dreaded a hard drive failure on my wife's laptop but getting her to perform any kind of housekeeping is nigh on impossible and also to provide
a file server capability protected by a single set of userids (the existing NAS data is open to all household members). So my goal is backup and restore too ;)
I meant a different nic on the beast (win 7)
I should have realised that but obviously wasn't thinking straight. I don't have a spare gigabit NIC to hand (although perhaps even a megabit one might provide an interesting data point) although there is such a card in one of my other (less used) PCs that
I could cannibalise for testing purposes. Another project for the coming weekend methinks.
put some limits on it to keep the lawyers happy. 2gb ram, OS loaded on a drive, limit the # of Hard Drives
That statement got me thinking, because I've never been able to find a definition anywhere of what the restrictions are with WSS 2012 R2 Essential - if I bring up the software license terms on the box itself they are for 2012 Standard!?- and wonder whether
they'd stop me doing things like adding RAM or changing the processor.
Even my buddies at wegotserved do not seem to have done any hands on reviews and they get "everything."
The cynic in me wonders whether that is because Thecus know that they've just shovelled this onto a handful of existing boxes that barely meet the spec. and which simply aren't up to snuff as anything other than a box full of disks.  The Thecus boxes
look like good value because they include the server OS (the unit cost me roughly 50% more than I could buy Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials for) but if you can't realise that value then they are just an expensive NAS.
if perhaps the algorithms in the Seagate SSHD do not know ReFS?
I haven't put a ReFS partition on the SSHD, only on the three 3TB WD Reds.
I will ask my contacts at MS to take a look at this thread, but they stay so busy with v.next I don't know if they will spend many cycles on it
    Perhaps you could ask them if the next version of the OS could do a better job of identifying which resources have been exhausted, by what part of the stack and where in the maze of connectivity that makes up a modern computing environment?? {gd&r}
    Cheers, Steve

  • Plugin-container and Flashplugin are both generating a million reads and writes an hour... even when Firefox is minimized and running no audio/video; how can I

I am running FF 18.0.2 on a Win7 system with an i7 CPU and 8GB RAM. My Flash plugin is newly-updated. I've used Firefox on this machine its entire life (3 years).
Since 3 or 4 (?) versions ago, I've been getting massive activity on my hard drive with Firefox. When I check with Win Task Manager, I see the plugin-container.exe *32 and the FlashPlayerPlugin_11_5_502_149.exe *32 processes are generating millions of I/O reads and writes, even while Firefox is idle (minimized, running no audio or video). On this latest version, 18.0.2, the drive activity stalls out YouTube videos repeatedly, even though I can see they're buffered ahead. The playing video will stop, audio will continue to end of buffer, and then EVERYTHING stops (Firefox not responding) for 30 seconds or so. It will then pickup again and play until it repeats the same pattern in a minute or so.
Example: I closed and restarted Firefox 2 days ago. Earlier today I checked Windows Task Manager and found the two processes EACH generated about 161 million reads and 141 million writes since then! My wife's laptop is showing nothing like a hundredth of that.
The constant drive activity is slowing down all programs outside of Firefox too, as you might imagine. The PC is acting like it's a dedicated machine for Flash.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.

  • Is there a version of Firefox still available that does not have plugin-container.exe included?

I have faithfully updated Firefox on my Windows XP system and now use Firefox/3.6.16. I also run Photoshop Elements 6.0, which requires quite a bit of memory. It is currently getting slowed down because plugin-container.exe is consuming anywhere from 25% to 50% of my memory. If I use Task Mgr to shut down this task, things are much better. Is there a downloadable version of Firefox that does not include plugin-container.exe, and if so, can I replace my current version with that one?

To LOVEfx4 and Mozilla community. Have Windows XP and had
Firefox 3.16.6 Since installing Firefox 4 I have had nothing but slowdowns whenever I try to download any sites with Java. Any explanations why? Sorry, I cannot find any threads for Firefox 4.

  • Alerts from Norton re high memory usage by plugin-container.exe

Running Firefox 3.6.13 on Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3. The details from Norton are as follows:
    1. Program Path C:\program files\Mozilla firefox\plugin-container.exe
    2. Program Description - Plugin Container for Firefox
    3. Memory - 1,676 MB used
    4. Disk Write Activity - 10 MB (total for this process)
    5. File Origin - Source File = updater.exe, File Created: firefox.exe,updater.exe,plugin-container.exe

Probably the alerts are nothing to worry about, and you may wish to suppress that particular alert.
On a couple of old spec legacy machines I recently switched. <br>Partly because of economics, and partly because , of the two, <br> Norton can perform better (in my opinion) on legacy machines.
The first thing I did notice was that Norton does pulse updates and background tasks very frequently (configurations can be changed) by default, and flags up quite a number of alerts.
The Norton (NIS) 'Insight' facility will be flagging up firefox plugin container.exe. It can be configured to suppress the alerts from firefox plugin container, but unless disabled will probably just flag up another busy process or application. It is not flagging it up because it is a known security problem, merely because of the amount of activity.
I imagine the alerts are when you are playing videos, probably with FlashPlayer, and may well depend on the resolution/quality of the videos.
If you think the results are unusual or unexpected see:
    *[[High memory usage]]
*[[Firefox consumes a lot of CPU resources]]
PS not sure what is happening with this post are some phrases unacceptable eg alternative expressions about economics; one paragraph was behaving oddly in preview resorted to manually adding break tags to keep it within the container.

  • Repeated kernel panics : Shockwave (plugin container)

    Hi fellows,
So I've recently updated my 2008 MacBook to Snow Leopard after being all these years with Leopard. I did it mainly because of the internet as it was getting harder to access certain websites due to the lack of updates of Flash player and Firefox. But ironically, what seems to be causing my problem is that very thing.
I've been getting an ungodly number of crashes and errors lately, 95% of which due to Firefox crashing because of the Shockwave flash player (as well as what Firefox seems to be using, "plugin-container"). The problem is that it has also been causing system wide problems including at least four or five kernel panics in the last week, whereas the grand total of kernel panics I had experienced so far with Leopard was one.
There seems to be a common thread of Firefox users running into problems with the Flash player plugin, and a lot of people have posted different tweaks online. I've tried a few of them : first of all, I tried the usual, updating both Firefox and the Flash player plugin ; didn't fix anything. Then I searched further, ran into a guy who fixed the same problem as I've been having by updating the Shockwave player to a specific 64-bit version : I did that, updated it, and it worked fine for about a day, then it started crashing again. Afterwards, I see that Adobe offers a version of the Flash player plugin on their website that supposedly favors security and stability over new functions : installed it, and it worked fine for about a day then promptly started crashing again.
Then I thought about the tried and true method of "uninstall everything, reinstall everything", which I did. I uninstalled the Flash player plugin, the Shockwave player plugin, then Firefox. After making sure that everything was truly uninstalled (followed the steps on the Adobe website to remove the preferences and cache of the Flash player from the user Library), I rebooted (because why not) and reinstalled everything. It worked fine on the day on which I reinstalled everything ... then it started crashing extra hard again the next day.
    Sensing a pattern there ?
At my wit's end, I started looking elsewhere. I downloaded Chromium to try it out. I'm still not accustomed to the interface and I doubt I ever will be, I still prefer Firefox also for the better extensions. It seemed to work fine for a while, but of course...
    It is happening again.
Had a kernel panic on Chromium about a day after downloading it.
I do not know what to do. I'm pasting one of the kernel panic logs here in the hopes that this problem will be solved. I am seriously considering reverting back to Leopard right now.

    A.

And as I was browsing, I got a message showing me that Firefox and Flash player crashed again, even though according to QuickTimeKirk's advice I disabled all the Shockwave and Flash player plugins in Firefox, so they made Firefox crash while they were disabled. What sense is that supposed to make ? I'm writing this from Chromium because I cannot reopen Firefox because as soon as I open it it crashes again as well as Flash player.

  • Why does %system take so much of my system resources half an hour into computer turned on.

I recently inhereted an i7 8gb ram 256gb ssd retina 15" mbp from my father and I am trying to use it but it keeps malfunctioning.
    The error:
Activity Monitor is set to launch at start-up so I kept track of the Activity of CPU, due to starting the troubleshooting of this error.
What I found was that when computer starts the CPU would be idle 95% and when the computer would be on for half an hour the %System would start to take all of the remaining idle cpu. Regardless of what I was doing, wether just leaving the computer and not doing anything, or playing Starcraft 2. Either way the %System just destroys the CPU about half-an-hour into start-up of MBP.
I have done a system restore (via turn comp on, hit command+r and do the online factory restore) twice.
I have switched user accounts because I was thinking it was something I did on this account. Still happened.
I have googled to see if anyone else has a problem like this but couldn't find an exact replica of the situation, just similar problems.
I have done Software Update and still nothing.
    Side-note:
Computer was not used for 4 months, and when I first tried to use it it would not turn on. With or without charger connected.
I left it to charge over night and nothing. Packed the MBP away for a few days. Then tried again to turn it on via charging, nothing happened and about 5 minutes after trying for the first time (kept it plugging in without disconnecting) I noticed a minor cloud of smoking rising from the MBP out of the back, behind the monitor. I closed the monitor and the MBP turned on. Now when I move the MBP around I can hear "broken things" moving around in the MBP. Now the battery is shot and reads as being not present.
Not sure if the side-note has anything to do with the main error but thought I would add that in. If anyone can help me out I will be forever grateful of them.
Update: I read some other peoples "problems" on this forum and found that you can view "system processes" from the drop down menu in the top right corner of activity monitor. And kernal_task is taking 600% of CPU. And someone asked the original poster "did you launch anything at all that would affect the kernal_task" and he said no. Well Im in the same boat. I did system restore over-night. Went to log-in and noticed the usual... 30 seconds login with half a second delay with keystrokes. (mind you this is the first time using after computer did restore. All it did was sit idle, and had a user log-in).
Also another thing I forgot to mention was that when I turn computer off and then turn it off (shut down. manual start-up) then the problem would reset. But if I did a "restart" then the computer would restart with the %system consuming all the resources as it did before.

If you believe the information shown for your product is incorrect, you can submit your proof of purchase online or by fax. Your sales receipt is needed for Apple's 1-year limited warranty and AppleCare Protection Plan validation, so be sure to keep it in a safe place. Apple's 1-year limited warranty is the same whether or not you register.
