Try to disable IPC.
You can set the prefs dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.* to '''false''' on the about:config page to disable the plugin-container process to see if that helps.
'''dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npswf32.dll''' (Flash)
'''dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npctrl.dll''' (Silverlight)
'''dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npqtplugin.dll''' (QuickTime)
To open the ''about:config'' page, type '''about:config''' in the location (address) bar and press the Enter key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.
Double-click each of those prefs to toggle them to false, then restart Firefox.

  • Plugin-container.exe loading in Gmail, what if I shut it down?

Whenever I open my Gmail (Google mail), plugin-container.exe loads into memory. What happens if I shut down plugin-container.exe via task manager while the Gmail tab is still open? Will that crash my browser? (what happens to the Gmail tab in that case?) would that be safe?

  • Adobe flashplayer causing firefox plugin container to burn CPU

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit with 8GB RAM and Firefox 6.02 on a quad CPU 2.5 GHz Alienware M17x notebook. I am having a problem with Adobe flashplayer (v 10.3.183.10) which causes the plugin container to use a sustained circa 30% of CPU even when Firefox is not doing much.  This causes excessive fan speeds, noise, heating etc.  Disabling the plugin reduces the CPU use from the container to less than 1%. Ay idea how I can run flash and avoid the excessive CPU load?

Thanks guys for looking at this.  I have been waiting all day to test as you suggest but I can't get my system to produce the problem again and I have not changed any hardware, software, settings or anything!  The plugin container has been behaving correctly with Flash no matter what sites I have visited. V silly as I was stuck with this for several days before posting.
May have been a random machine error.  I will repost if it comes back but feeling sheepish now.

  • Latest up date with plugin container has made firefox lag and eating memory and cpu

Flash games cause Firefox Plug-in container to hang. The problems started as soon as the plug-in container became a part of Firefox two updates ago.
Memory usage is up to 3 times what Firefox itself is using and when the hangs occur, the plug-in container is using in excess of 50% of the computer's memory. At this point, I need to switch to a different browser to play these games for longer than a few minutes at a time.

  • "AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin" uses too much CPU. How to replace it with Preview?

The AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin uses over 250% CPU when I open a dozen of pdf files from the Internet in Safari 7.0.2. The Adobe Read is 10.1.9 as seen from Safari > Preferences > Security > Internet Plug-in > Manage Website Settings > Adobe Reader.
Can I replace the Adobe Reader Internet Plug-in with Preview or anything else using less CPU?  (But it's too time consuming to downlog the pdf files and open thme using other tools e.g. iBook, Preview etc.)
    Or any solution at all?

Most PDF documents can be read using the built-in support of OS X & Safari. If you remove the adobe or other pdf plug-in files from HD/Library/Internet Plug ins while any web browsers are closed, then Safari should display them.

  • Why is plugin-container using 100 of cpu & over 700K of storage?

This started with 3.6.16 plugin container takes ever increasing storage & cpu % I have to keep killing firefox & restarting

    Your "Plug-in Container" is corrupted.
    download the following:
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)
    Flash Player Uninstaller
    Also, download these:
    Shockwave Player Uninstaller
Shockwave Player 112 FULL installer (ther browsers)
You'll need to install Shockwave with the FULL installer for IE too, but there isn't a direct download for it. You'll need to go to: http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/otherversions/ using IE AFTER everything else is done.
Save all the files and close your browser.
Run the uninstallers first (both of them)
    Go to: C/Windows/System32
    Delete the Macromed folder.
Open your Registry Editor (Start>Run or press the Windows key + R and type 'regedit' [minus the quotes] and click OK)
In the Registry Editor, go to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE
Delete the Macromedia folder (Right click and choose "Delete").
    Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software and delete the Macromedia folder there too.
Close the Registry Editor and empty your recycle bin.
Run the Flash Player installers, and then the Shockwave FULL installer you downloaded.
Lastly, open IE and go to: http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/otherversions/ to download and install the Shockwave FULL installer for ActiveX (IE).
For Firefox, I recommend FlashBlock (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flashblock/) It's prevent ANY Flash content from loading until you allow it manually. It can get to be a pain, but you eventually get used to it.

  • Plugin-container.exe takes over and uses 100% of my CPU locking me out and leaving my PC non-functioning. Is this a bug, or a memory leak, in the Firefox software? Can anything be done to fix this problem?

In looking at Windows Task Manager I found that plugin-container.exe was taking over 100% of my CPU and my system was frozen. Is this a memory leak or other bug?

Thank you! I have been having problems with Adobe Flash since downloading the new 11.1 version. I will download it again and reinstall it, hopefully that will correct the problem.

  • I looked on my C:\ for plugin-container.exe and deleted the file as it kept slowing down my computor, however now when I load firefox it crashes, how can I re-install this plugin to disable it properly?

My computor had been overly slow which was not normal when looking at processes running in task manager I found plugin-container.exe to be using alot of memory. I looked online and found that this was an update of firefox which was not essential, I then looked on my C:\ drive for the application and deleted it hoping this would solve the problem as I could not find it when looking at my firefox plugins. However now when I open firefox it quickly crashes, how can I reinstall this? Do I need to reinstall firefox completely or is there a more simple solution? I have done the firefox plugin check and it can find no problems.

Probably the easiest way is to download Firefox again from http://www.mozilla.com and re-install it.

  • I keep getting error message that plugin container has an issue that needs to be resolved. Some of my extensions and add ons are no longer loading either. I

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the plug ins as well as gone to the trouble shooting area for these plugins. I have tried installing firefox again. I also tried using beta 4 and I had the same issue. Also it is taking forever to load pages.

  • FF15 hangs whenever plugin-container.exe is loaded in memory

I need help. Since at least in v14 and now v15, FF hangs becoming unresponsive whenever plugin-container.exe is loaded in memory, as monitored with Process Explorer of SysInternals. This happens in FF with all plugins manually disabled and with no extensions, loaded in either "normal" or safe mode, even after having reset it to default state in about:support. (The unresponsiveness is not absolute, since every some 90 seconds there is a brief refresh of the screen as indicated by an acknowledging screen change due to a prior click or mouse motion. (In this quasi-frozen condition, FF slowly ramps up its memory usage while plugin-container keeps alternating between two smaller vales in Process Explorer.) After some 15-20+ minutes, plugin-container unloads itself and FF starts responding again. If I then visit a page that triggers the loading of plugin-container, the described problem develops once more. Blocking the loading of plugin-container (e.g.,renaming or moving it out or blocking it with the firewall) hangs FF. The solution for FF 3.6.6 for dom.ipc in about:config does not work in these versions.
Ironically, the Mozilla support page about "Firefox crashes when loading certain pages" (http://goo.gl/i02Xz) is a page that loads automatically plugin-container and hangs my machine, so I had to enter the forums by selecting a different problem.
This occurs in a Windows-7 machine with sufficient memory (1025 MB physical, 1025 MB virtual) and a lean configuration (monitored and enforced with Autoruns and Process Explorer), which runs very well other browsers such as Chrome, Opera o IE9. I have been using FF since its v2 and would hate to switch permanently to a different browser. Any informed advice on how to fix the problem (or disable the plugin- container in a working manner) would be much appreciated. TIA.

<b>Solved by blocking the loading of Plugin Container . . .</b>
Searching in the bugzilla.mozilla.org site for text or attachments on bugs related to <i>dom.ipc.plugins....</i>, I encountered several references to a Windows environment variable <span style="font-variant: small-caps;">MOZ_DISABLE_OOP_PLUGINS</span>, for example in the patch at http://goo.gl/jYJKL. I then added this variable to the Windows 7 system environment of my machine setting it to 1. It works : FF15 no longer loads plugin container (and therefore does not hang) when visiting web pages that before froze the browser.<p>NB : As I discovered shortly thereafter in googling this environment variable, this method of blocking the loading of plugin container was already reported 3 weeks ago by <b>big_v</b> in the Mozilla support forum, http://goo.gl/v7prA. Chapeau.

  • Plugin-container.exe is EATING cpu clock cycles and slowing down my computer big-time. Is there a fix to prevent this, or do I just have to disable this subsidiary program and take the consequences?

Whenever I have an audiovisual display running in a Firefox (5.0) tab, the program "plugin-container.exe" swamps my CPU, jumping up to 95% of processing clock cycles. This makes all online video displays hang and jump, and it's a pain in the neck. Is there any way to mitigate this?

That's supposed to indicate it's your plug-ins like Flash that is the problem.
You might try changing hardware acceleration, a setting within Flash either turn if off or on.

  • Plugin-container.exe. I realise this has been raised before but there never seems to have been any firm reply from Firefox as to how to rectify the problem, as I have just had 94% use of my CPU by this and my use is so slow it is impossible. Emjayel

plugin-container.exe is a disaster and looking at previous forums it has been so for at least a year without any resolution. As I said before at one stage this was using 94% of my CPU and my system was reduced to a snails pace.
Surely Firefox should give some useful alternative.
    Emjayel

Try going to http://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck and see if your plugins are out of date.
