Plugin-container uses a lot of CPUtime.

I like to keep a few tabs open to webpages I want to revisit or read later. So it is not uncommon for me to have 1 or two active pages I'm looking at, and 20 dormant pages I won't be looking at for a few days.
Since the last upgrade, the plugin-container is taking a lot of CPU time. (it might have been the firefox process before the upgrade, but it was less noticeable).
From the help for "plugin-container" I see that adobe flash is the only currently supported plugin. So, can I pause the flash on my inactive pages so that I can save some CPU time (and energy).
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== I upgraded.

If you want to disable plugin-container, See this KB article:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin-container_and_out-of-process_plugins
The currently supported plugins are NPAPI test plugin, Adobe Flash, Apple QuickTime (Windows) and Microsoft Silverlight (Windows)

• Why is plugin-container using 100 of cpu & over 700K of storage?

This started with 3.6.16 plugin container takes ever increasing storage & cpu % I have to keep killing firefox & restarting

Your "Plug-in Container" is corrupted.
download the following:
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)
Flash Player Uninstaller
Also, download these:
Shockwave Player Uninstaller
Shockwave Player 112 FULL installer (ther browsers)
You'll need to install Shockwave with the FULL installer for IE too, but there isn't a direct download for it. You'll need to go to: http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/otherversions/ using IE AFTER everything else is done.
Save all the files and close your browser.
Run the uninstallers first (both of them)
Go to: C/Windows/System32
Delete the Macromed folder.
Open your Registry Editor (Start>Run or press the Windows key + R and type 'regedit' [minus the quotes] and click OK)
In the Registry Editor, go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE
Delete the Macromedia folder (Right click and choose "Delete").
Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software and delete the Macromedia folder there too.
Close the Registry Editor and empty your recycle bin.
Run the Flash Player installers, and then the Shockwave FULL installer you downloaded.
Lastly, open IE and go to: http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/otherversions/ to download and install the Shockwave FULL installer for ActiveX (IE).
For Firefox, I recommend FlashBlock (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flashblock/) It's prevent ANY Flash content from loading until you allow it manually. It can get to be a pain, but you eventually get used to it.

• Unity player won't use discrete graphics--plugin-container?

I'm trying to play a Unity game in Firefox--honestly because Chrome doesn't support them anymore. My computer is a Lenovo Y50 with an 860M graphics card running Optimus. I've set Firefox to use the discrete graphics card, but Unity games refuse to utilize it--if they are, it's extremely slow. I tried making the plugin container use the discrete graphics automatically but the option is greyed-out for some reason. Any ideas?

Yes there are some ideas;
It looks like they did investigate this a while ago [https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/486939/optimus-and-unity-player/?offset=7]
However if its greyed out, it might be a blocked driver. Are your drivers up to date in Firefox? [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]

• Can I disable plugin-container.exe in 20.0.1 and still stream video?

When I try to stream TV shows with Firefox, I receive high Firefox disc usage warnings from my Norton antivirus. I believe this is due to the gigantic plugin-container.exe that Firefox apparently runs the Flash player inside of. When I look at it in Taskmaster plugin-container has been using 150 k + after just a few minutes and continues to go higher the longer I watch. If I continue to watch without doing anything, eventually the video begins to stutter and then stops while the sound keeps playing. My system slows down to the point where it takes 5 min to stop the player after clicking the control, and a half hour for my system to process the commands to shut down Firefox and restart.
I've been able to work around this by putting the AV into extended Silent Mode to save CPU and by closing the browser after each and every episode, then reopening it again. Obviously this isn't an optimal solution.
I tried shutting down plugin-container using the Taskmaster but this also killed my video. When I closed the window and restarted the video, the plug-in-container came back. In this current version of Flash 20.0.1 is there a way to disable it forever that will also allow me to stream video? IE8 didn't play nice with web pages but Firefox isn't playing nice with video streaming. Is there a fix that doesn't involve a new PC?

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions. We know the problem isn't with Flash because I was running it without huge background files or lock-up up while using IE8.
Installing an older version of Flash isn't an option because newer versions resolve some of the memory usage and flickering problem that older Flash versions caused on the new Hulu site. Some sites also require the newest patch and return an error message if an older version is detected.
I'm not sure what protected Flash mode does or doesn't do and hate to mess around with Flash when we already know it's been running without issues on my system using the other browser.
What I DO know is that the problem only started occurring when I made the switch from IE8 to Firefox. This weekend I had it happen again when I only had Firefox open and the Norton AV running out of Silent Mode in the background. Only the Flash thumbnails on the Hulu home page were active, not the Flash player and I started to get slowdown and lose mouse control.
I posted the issue over on the Norton forum also but don't expect a workaround. I think disabling that huge plugin-container file might help. By the time I've watched one video both Firefox and plug-in container are up around 200k each, much,much, much larger than anything else running on my system.
So is disabling plugin-containter still viable? Firefox crashing is never going to happen, if plug-in container freezes up my system first. Continually closing and reopening Firefox as a workaround doesn't seem to be way it was intended to perform.

• Latest up date with plugin container has made firefox lag and eating memory and cpu

plugin container using 5% cpu constantly, firefox using 150 - 300k ram, also plugin container not closing when firefox does causing shut down to fail have to use controll alt delete

Flash games cause Firefox Plug-in container to hang. The problems started as soon as the plug-in container became a part of Firefox two updates ago.
Memory usage is up to 3 times what Firefox itself is using and when the hangs occur, the plug-in container is using in excess of 50% of the computer's memory. At this point, I need to switch to a different browser to play these games for longer than a few minutes at a time.

• Plugin-container.exe using 40% of cpu

Firefox is having problems with certain web sites
== Description
==
FYI, (thanks to all developers)
I rarely go to porn sites but the popunder-windows they generate caused the plugin-container.exe to use 40% of cpus (2 cpu). This is after I had closed all tabs and left my computer unattended. This popunder-window might have very-very-unusually slipped my attention due to my errand.
Thanks again

Only if i have 2 sites open i.e. http://www.youtube.com and http://www.mobileman.com (or any other site), i have trouble opening a third page i.e. http://www.google.com. Is it possible, that firefox is using a lot of CPU (i.e. plugin-container)??

• Plugin-container.exe is using 90-100% CPU - even while running Firefox in safe-mode. Can I fix this?

I am using fire fox 5.0 (after using 3.6 for what seems like forever) and the plugin-container.exe has been sucking up my CPU power like a vampire. It had been doing that in 3.6 but not as much. I figured if I upgraded the problem would go away, but no, it has not. After reading some other similar posts, I ran Firefox in safe mode with no plugins running and sure enough after browsing for a bit it started running slower and used 90-100% of my CPU. Is there any way to fix this issue? Or am I doomed? Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

That's supposed to show you the problem isn't Firefox, don't know how successful that actually is. You can delete it so that it starts up again. Susggest restarting Firefox when you see it has used about an hour of CPU time as the next hour of CPU time will take shorter to get there and you will be locked out.
Also see this -- the solution on all the items seem to fix a lot of problems with the places.sqlite database.

• Plugin-container.exe. I realise this has been raised before but there never seems to have been any firm reply from Firefox as to how to rectify the problem, as I have just had 94% use of my CPU by this and my use is so slow it is impossible. Emjayel

plugin-container.exe is a disaster and looking at previous forums it has been so for at least a year without any resolution. As I said before at one stage this was using 94% of my CPU and my system was reduced to a snails pace.
Surely Firefox should give some useful alternative.
Emjayel

Try going to http://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck and see if your plugins are out of date.

• How do I disable the plugin-container.exe? It is eating a lot of memory.

When my computer slows down, I open the task manager and it tells me that the plugin-container.exe is using upwards of 79k in memory. Is there a way that I can disable it? What are the consequences of doing so and are there any other remedies for this exorbitant use of memory by that program?

Do not confuse extensions and plugins.
Extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) add extra functionality (features) to Firefox.
Plugins (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) make it possible to handle specific data (files) served by websites like media files and Flash content.

I am running Firefox 18.0.1 and the plugin-container is using all my ram, have tried altering dom.ipc.plugins to false but makes no difference. Any advice please

plugin-container.exe is used to run Flash and other plugins so if they crash they do not take down your main Firefox session. But... I don't think memory usage would be that different if you tricked Firefox into running Flash inside firefox.exe. (There was a thread with the trick, but I can't recall the details. It was not a regular Firefox setting.)

• Plugin-container process using 50+% CPU

There is some process called plugin-container initiated by firefox/thunderbird that sometimes uses 50% or more CPU.
Someone has this problem too?
Thanks in advance.

You can also try a Firefox plugin called flashblock. I think it's also available in the AUR. It requires a single click to allow flash, and you can whitelist certain sites.
You might also look at Adblock Plus.

I am using firefox 6.0.1 with Windows XP SP3 and have noticed that opening my ebay summary page causes plugin-container.exe to use between 60 and 80% of available CPU time. I haven't noticed this problem on other pages nor did I notice it before the recent firefox upgrade.
Not sure if this a firefox or ebay issue.

• Plugin-container.exe using 95% of conputer resourses (I end process manually when this happens or have to logoff/reboot)

Plugin-container.exe from firefox sometimes uses up to 95% of my computer resources and needs to be manually shut down by way of task manager or in the last resort of a manual log-off/hard reset (pushing the power button) At this rate NO browser will work on my pc under win7 ... i have gone through chrome (constantly crashed pc) IE (last resort, still installed useless for most websites)
and a couple others that just did not play nice. What gives?

There is a possibility that you have a malware problem, maybe you need to investigate that.

If the problem is occurring as you clear cookies, or history (possibly on close-down of Firefox) then it may be caused by a known bug in Firefox. (Bug 633427 )
