  • Condition of Gnome Shell (git) and its issues

I had recently been able to build gnome-shell-git succesfully, but, after that, there have always been issues.
I have uploaded gnome-shell-git on AUR http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29509, but it seems that there are some things that may be wrong on the deps:
1)gobject-instrospection needs to be built before clutter-git.
2)Clutter (git), on the other hand, often has build issues and can't be built with (1) installed first, even though it is required as a makedep. If we turn off gobject-introspection integration, we don't have Clutter-*.gir created.
Clutter 1.0.x on the other hand (the [extra] one), doesn't seem to be gobject-introspection aware, even though we *have* to include this dep.
3)If someone can build the (1) and (2), has issues, during compiling gnome-shell-git, where, during compilation, Mutter is being executed somehow (?) (you can see errors that occur only if mutter is being executed), with a strange mozjs error.
4)Last but not least, should we prefer Mutter (Metacity 3.x) from git.gnome.org, or the patched one from git.moblin.org (that already exists on AUR). Mutter seems not to respect my xf86-video-ati driver, since, if I turn on Mutter composition, I have no hardware acceleration (but software acceleration) and the fonts become very blurry. (of course I have 3D desktop composition for many months now with the other Window managers)
I'd like to have your opinion on what should be done to make gnome-shell work and to hear if someone could make gnome-shell work.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome Shell Extensions won't install from website

When I go to https://extensions.gnome.org/ from either Chromium or Firefox, extensions fail to install. If I click the toggle to turn a new extension "ON", nothing happens. Reloading the site switches it back to "OFF".
I was able to install gnome-shell-extension-mediaplayer-git from the AUR. (Which also pulls in gnome-shell-extension-common-git.) It works fine. The problem is that most of the extensions on the AUR appear to be outdated and the users directed to the official site.
This is a relatively new install of Arch and extensions have never worked. Maybe there's a package I'm missing? Or is there a way to get any debugging output? I'm not sure where to look.

I found the following from AskUbuntu (not my own words, pasted from the source:
I'll take a wild stab in the dark: If you're using Chrome/Chromium, navigate to about:plugins and make sure "Gnome Shell Integration" is enabled. Then navigate back to extensions.gnome.org and when the ribbon appears at the top make sure you "Always Allow for this Site"
On Firefox you'll have to do something similar if you've turned extensions off. Browse to about:plugins and make sure libgnome-shell-browser-plugin.so is present / enabled. If it's not, upgrade Gnome Shell, or find it on your filesystem and link to it from to ~/.mozilla/plugins (you shouldn't have to do this though).

  • Gnome-shell extremely laggy after first login with xf86-video-ati

    Hello!
I've recently switched from Catalyst to the open-source ati driver. However, after the switch gdm is extremely laggy after being started up on boot (using gdm.service) and after login gnome-shell is laggy as well. If I kill gdm or logout, the new gdm instance is speedy as it should be and after logging in gnome-shell runs fine.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
    Thanks in advance!
UPDATE: for some reason gnome-shell started by the 'laggy-started-on-boot' gdm instance takes up constantly more than 60% CPU.

seems that nobody got some experience in Gnome 3 yet...
i guess X is working well, it's just Gnome what causes the problem.
Had some issues as well with the screen resolution and solved it by playing arround with xranr.
Is the gnome shell running? (Try [alt]+[F2], is there a black dialog for entering commands?)

  • Latest MediaSource Plugins for various Creative MP3 Players are now available for downl

Just went to the product support site. Guess what? The latest MediaSource plugins for the various Creative MP3 Players are now available for download. I am sure the latest plugins should have fixed several problems.
Don't forget to download the latest Creative MediaSource v3.30.2 too. Install the latest Creative MediaSource first before you install the MediaSource Plugins of your respecti've MP3 Players.
Note: According to the download site, the latest MediaSource plugins require you to have at least v3.20.57 of Creative MediaSource.

    Thanks micromouse
... but there's no new plugin for the original Jukebox
I've always had trouble connecting to MediaSource with my JB and was hoping for a new plugin to sort all my problems.

  • [solved] Blank screen for few seconds between GDM and Gnome-Shell

    Hi there,
I don't know if this phenomenon is "normal" or not, so I ask : I am using Gnome 3.6 and after I have logged in on GDM I see a blank screen for roundabout 3 seconds before the gnome-shell starts. The whole system is running fine - so this is no "real" problem -, but this 3 seconds of a black screen between GDM and the gnome-shell are somewhat annoying and I want to find out if this behaviour is normal or not .
Indeed, if I look into journalctl, I find this messages:
Dez 03 21:45:53 sushi gdm-simple-slave[272]: WARNING: Failed to give slave programs access to the display. Trying to proceed.

Actually, I don't know if this is relevant for my little "black-screen" problem (but it looks as if ...).
    And

shows nothing to worry about (as far as I can see):

Finally I found out what's going on - and it's so simple
It's just my monitor which is runing on a default resolution of 1920x1080. When I switched to 1600x900 using Gnome's system tools, the monitor needs roundabout two seconds to adjust to this resolution

I keep getting a "missing plugin" for midi and mp3 files I want to listen to online.  These are Hymn files.  And I get a message telling me I have a missing plugin. Any ideas?

My husband used to be able to convert ABC files to MIDI files .  This allows sheet music to be played on the computer so as to learn a tune.  We get the Missing Plug in  message.
I downloaded the Quicktime 7.   I open Quick time, Still get the message.  What is the solution?

  • [GNOME Shell] Switch default browser for "overview" search

Have anyone been able to do this?
Using Chromium as my default browser, entering a search string in the Overview Panel still only grants the option of searching with Epiphany. As far as I'm able to tell it seems defaulting to Epiphany is hardcoded into GNOME Shell, but please tell me I'm wrong...

Does that for me too. Very strange that GNOME Shell does not respect the GNOME default application web browser setting?

  • Gcal data provider for GNOME-Shell

So I wanted to try out the new GNOME-Shell calendar app (the one attached to the clock at the top of the screen), but I definitely didn't want to use evolution. I use Google calendar for all of my calendaring.
    Enter: google-calendar-server.
Just a quick and dirty python script (but it did take quite a bit of reading as I had no idea how to interact with Dbus at all before), it uses Google's provided gdata api to grab your calendar information, and then present it to the Dbus interface that the calendar app is looking at for information.
    Dependencies:
    - python2
    - dbus (python-dbus)
    - gdata (for getting calendar info)
    - isodate (easy parsing of the dates given by Google, since they are for reasons unknown not just sending you dates in UTC or unix timestamp...)
    Usage:
    $ python2 cserver.py -uUSERNAME -pPASSWORD
It's ugly and dirty at this point, but it's certainly functional, so I figured I'd share it. You will probably want to turn off the Debug flag before running it unless you want to see all of my debug prints.

  • Recent files for gnome Gnome Shell

I believe this feature is planned for 3.8... can't find a link, though.

  • Wayland backend per user for Gnome Shell?

Hello, I've been trying to set environment variable with Wayland backend for Gnome Shell on Wayland but this per user just doesn't work.
    I tried to put:
    export GDK_BACKEND=wayland
    export CLUTTER_BACKEND=wayland
to files like .profile and .bashrc but Gnome Shell doesn't tolerate these two. Without Wayland backend everything just run in XWayland "mode".
Weston tolerate this backends but it is highly "underfetaured" and sometimes it's just crash (some breakpoint trap).
    Any response appreciated.

I have had a brief look and I think there may be a way in to add/change things via .desktop files.  It looks like whenever gnome loads a .desktop type file it should look in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME home which, by default, would be $HOME/.config first before loading it from one of the standard system directories.  The standard session definitions are desktop files (though with a .session extension) so putting a copy on $HOME/.config should enable user specific reconfiguration.

  • Will gnome-shell be in repos for this GNOME release?

There should be a preview release of it, according to GNOME 2.32 release announcement.
Are there any plans to include it to [extra] now?

you or me read the wrong release announcement.
there is no gnome-shell released along with 2.32 and even they wanted to do that, they can't
gnome-shell requires exclusively gtk3 which is not released.
there is no plan to include in extra or even in gnome-unstable.

  • Gnome 3.8 - nautilus crashes gnome-shell

Hi, I have a problem on two users where by once opening nautilus, the shell crashes and then re-blinks in and recovers some times, and sometimes I get a grey screen saying I need to logout. I did a complete removal of gnome 3.6, and then removed all config files in my home folder:

    .config/dconf
    .config/gconf
    .config/nautilus
    .config/gtk[2,3]
