Plugins, etc.

I would like to learn about "browser extensions," including plugins, add-ons and widgets.
First, can anyone tell me what plugins are most popular for use with Safari? Which ones do you recommend? Can you refer me to a list of additional Safari plugins?
Second, is there some way to keep track of the plugins I've installed?
How should one delete plugins?
Also, I've noticed that Firefox is enhanced by a growing array of "add-ons," while Opera uses "widgets," which appears to be another name for the same thing. Is anything similar available for Safari?
And here's a more specific question: I recently installed Adobe Creative Suite and was asked if I wanted to make Adobe Reader the default application for viewing PDF's. I knew nothing about the topic, so I just chose YES.
But I did a little research today and discovered that Apple's PDF viewer, Preview, is much nicer. It turns out that Adobe Reader is now the default PDF viewer on two of my browsers, with Preview opening on a third. (I think the browser using Preview was Firefox or Opera.) Anyway, do you know how to make Preview the default PDF viewer in all my browsers, or is that something I have to set up one browser at a time?
Ideally, I would like to have the option of opening a PDF with either Preview or Adobe Reader.
Thanks.

Hi David,
First off, the most important thing to realise about Safari "extensions" is that newer versions of Safari will more often than not, require newer updated versions of said "extensions" for compatibility. It sounds downright obvious, I know, but please bear that in mind.
I would like to learn about "browser extensions," including plugins, add-ons and widgets.

A good repository of Safari extensions is PimpMySafari. I understand that it isn't updated as much nor maintained as well as it used to be, but it's a good starting point. Personally, I'm a big fan of Saft (shareware), which covers almost everything which you might want in terms of added functionality. As an added bonus, the project is maintained by an enthusiastic and helpful developer in Li Hao.
Apart from that, you might also want to take a look at SpeedDownload (demo) and SafariStand (freeware). There are a lot of plugins listed in PimpMySafari which do little bits, like Sogudi and Keywurl, which provide alias searching via the address bar. Just have a quick look around and ye shall find. :o)
Second, is there some way to keep track of the plugins I've installed?
How should one delete plugins?
I don't think there's a GUI method of keeping track of the plugins, but in order to delete them, it's usually a simple matter of quitting Safari and moving said plugin application bundle from its installation location. These typically include...
~/Library/InputManagers/
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins/
~/Library/Application Support/ (and folders therein)
... or their respective equivalents in the "HD/Library/" folder. The good thing is that most developers will provide detailed information on how to uninstall their plugins. In fact, it's highly recommended that you follow their specific instructions to avoid having stray bundles lying around which can cause a host of problems in the future.
Anyway, do you know how to make Preview the default PDF viewer in all my browsers, or is that something I have to set up one browser at a time?
I haven't had to do this in a while, but I think it involves opening Adobe Reader and looking in the 'Internet' section of its Preferences for an option to "Display PDF in browser using... ". I hope that helps. Sometimes, Adobe refuses to obey these options and you'll have to physically remove the plugin from its plugin folder..
/Library/Internet Plug-ins/
Removing or disabling the Adobe plugin should be sufficient to return PDF-handling rights to Safari's own PDF support engine. As far as I know, there is no way of choosing which plugin to use on the fly. However, if you have things set up with Safari handling the PDF support, you can still easily download PDF files and then opening them in the actual Adobe Reader application.

  • Does all user accounts load the same drivers, plugins etc?

    Hi
Most of what I do on my Mac can be divided into "Music" and "Office-stuff".
    1. I want to create two user accounts so my system loads faster and is more stable because it only loads what it needs for the specific task. (And to avoid conflicts with drivers, plugins, settings etc. for the audio software with the drivers etc. for the officephotoshop+wirelessmenu bar stuff.) My question is: will creating two users help me? Or will both user accounts still load all the same stuff in the background?
    2. And how do I even install programs that only run on one user? It seems that all my programs are available for all users. And moving them around after installation as someone suggested to me sounds a little unsafe.
I wish for the two user accounts to share Firefox and bookmarks and I can't do that if I create disk partitions, right?
Thanks a lot guys. I hope you have some thoughts on this.
    Jakob

From your description and configuration you posted of having a single iMac TM backs up all of the accounts.

  • Export/Import Photoshop preferences, plugins, etc.?

I need to wipe my computer clean and reinstall windows.
re-installing Photoshop is not a big deal, but I have several preferences, plugins, saved layer styles, actions, etc. That I do not want to loose and will not be retained.
Is there a way I can back all this up, and so when i reinstall photoshop its the same as it is now?
I also will want to do this with Dreamweaver, After Effects, and Illustrator.
    Thanks!

    1: Give Them A Home:
First, decide where you’ll be backing up your settings. Be it a folder on your hard drive, a CD/DVD or an offsite storage service. Wherever it is find a consistent place that will be separate up from your main computer should you have a total crash.
    2: Archive your actions:
Photoshop is not a place to store actions. When you download a new action don’t just load it in the actions palette and expect it to stay there. PS will retain the actions so long as the preference to keep it loaded remains. Also deleting an action in PS does not actually delete the file, it just removes it from the action palette. As long as you have your action files safely stored you’re good. But, if you load an action, and then delete the file expecting PS to retain it forever, your doom is sealed.
I like to make a “favorite actions” set that I store with my other actions. This way all my commonly used actions are in one set that I can load fast. I keep it in PS all the time, but it’s backed up should I have a crash. My other actions are nearby as well, but I load them only occasionally since all my favorites are in one set. You can do this by making a new action set (folder) within PS, then drag your favorite actions into it from other sets, then save your favorites set in a safe place.
2: Saving Brushes & More With Preset Manger.
In PS go to Edit/Preset Manager. A window will pop up that contains a dropdown to select your brushes, swatches, gradients, styles, contours, patterns, custom shapes or tools. If you have any custom settings for any of these it’s as simple as going to the manger, selecting what you want to manage and saving the set to your backup location.
    http://www.prophotoshow.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/file-preset-manager.jpg
    3: Backing Up Keyboard Shortcuts:
Keyboard shortcuts can save a ton of time, and once you set up custom ones you’ll want them to be there.  I for example set CMD+F to flatten since I use it so often. If I get on a machine that does not have the setting, I quickly miss it. All you need do is go to up to the menu and choose Edit/Keyboard Shortcuts. Slick the save icon, and save the current shortcuts in a file. Now you can easily load it on any machine by simply loading the saved file.
    Power User Tricks:
There’s more you can backup than what’s on the surface of PS. Workspaces  for example control the location of your palette’s and menus. Most know that you can save workspace by simply going to Window/Worskpaces. Thing is, there’s not really a built in method of exporting those workspaces for backup. To do this we have to talk about the Power User method.
Outside of Photoshop, go to your application (programs) folder and find Photoshop. We’re using CS3 for this, but it should be similar with other versions. Inside the PS folder look for the Presets folder, and inside that you’ll find stuff like Workspaces, and all kinds of other settings. You can just copy and paste things from here, to your backup and be good to go.
    Photoshop CS4 Notes: (UPDATE)
Most locations are the same in CS4. At the moment it looks like the only differnce if the Workspaces location. Rather than being inside the folder that contains Photoshop it’s found in these locations. Loaction information for other settings in CS4 can be found here.

  • After Effects CS 11.0.4.2: Problem loading project file (error loading plugins etc.)

    Hello Adobe community,
after creating a new project a few days ago, my After Effects CS6 v.11.0.4 has a problem with opening the project. Only this project can't open (everything else opens).
I atteched some pictures to explain my problem better.
I created a video in AE and used the warp stabilization. Ater 2 days i wanted to work on the project. If i open it up it loads and brings up a problem window. (see picture 1)
It says "After Effects Problem: After Effects crashed while opening the Effect-Plugin 'warp stabilization'".
By clicking "Ok", another problem window opens up. (see picture 2)
It says "After Effects Problem: After Effects crashed while opening the Effect-Plugin 'auto color'".
If i click "Ok", the next window comes up. (see picture 3)
It says "Cash at Processing. Latest protocolled Notification: <6796> <ae.blitpipe> <2> Making New Context"
After clicking OK again, it says i can save a copy of the project. (picture 4)
This pops up after saving. (picture 5)
    After that AE cloeses.
If i open up the new projectfile, it brings up this problem. (see picture 6)
---> "After Effects Problem: Missing Data in file"
But sometimes it says "No valid file-type"
What can i do? Every other project with warp stabilization opens up.
Does this mean i have to start from the beginning?
Is this problem known by anyone of the community?
You can see the files by following the link and unzipping it: Dropbox - autobot_drive.zip
    Please help me!

Can you import that problematic project into a brand new one?
If you enable caps lock before opening the problematic project, does it open?

  • Importing Actions, Plugins etc PSCS3 to PSCS5 Question

There's a useful support article (Move actions, presets, and workspaces from Photoshop CS4 to CS5) in the knowledge base, but I'm looking to find how to do this from CS3 to CS5.
Is there any reason not to just copy & paste everything over from the relevant folders (in Apps>PSCS3 and Users>me>AppSupport>Adobe>PSCS3>etc)?
Is there something "special" about PSCS4 stuff, or can I use the File Migration script to import stuff from PSCS3 to PSCS5?
    Thanks in advance
    Jim

Presets you can pull over wholesale. Definitely not the case with plug-ins. Plug-ins that shipped with CS4/CS3 aren't compatible with CS5. People who do this are asking for trouble (stability issues, duplicate file formats installed, etc).
3rd Party plug-ins are hit or miss, so it's better to go to the 3rd party plug-in sites to see if they have updated plug-ins for CS5 rather than moving any old 3rd party plug-ins directly over.

  • How to use Amplitube plugin?

I installed Amplitube Live, put it in the Audio/plugins/components folder and have no idea how to use it in GB. I want to see what it will do to harmonica.
I tried another IK product, a demo, Sampletankfree, and got nowhere with that either. IK says to load it as a virtual instrument. What am I missing?
    Thanks
    Alan

    Hi Alan
I have Amplitube and have no problem using it. There are 2 parts of Amplitube, a stand alone app and a plug-in version. When you installed Amplitube did it give you a choice of where to install the plug-in and what type of plug-in did you want to install? AU, VST etc. When you say I put "it" in the Audio?plugins etc folder...Did you put the application there or the plug-in? The plugin has a component. tag on it. See if Amplitube.component is is your Library/Audio/plugins/components. If it is then when opening GB open up a real instrument track. Double click on the track. Then goto the effects section and click on the first open area under compressor and a list of available AU plugins should be available. Select Amplitube and click on the pencil tool and you should be in business. All of the Amplitube effects and cabs should be there.
    Good Luck

  • Installing ContactSheetII plugin into Photoshop CS5

I've downloaded the CS5 optional plugins, dragged the ContactSheetII icon into plugins folder in CS5 app folder - restarted Photoshop and still do not find the ContactSheetII plugin anywhere.  Seems like it should be so easy - not today.  Any other suggestions?  Thanks!

from answers.informer.com if you have a win os,
Many Photoshop plug-ins have an automated installer which adds necessary data into the registry or places the files into the folder of the software. In case you have plug-ins which are standalone (.8rb, .Plugin, etc) then you should copy those files (please note that Photoshop should be closed at that moment) into the following folder: \Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins. The next time when you will open the main software, these plug-ins (if are compatible) will be loaded into the application and then you will be able to access them from the main window of the software. The plug-ins will be accessible from the Filter menu.

  • Must I manually move actions and plugins from PS CS6 (CC) to PS CC2014?

I updated from PS CS6 (CC version) to the new PS CC2014. I thought this was a simple update, rather than the installation of a completely new version of PS. Therefore, I was under the impression that all of my previous settings (brushes, actions, plugins, etc.) would automatically transfer to the new version, which they did not. Is this something I have to do manually before I uninstall CS6 (CC)? I certainly don't need multiple versions of PS taking up space on my computer, but I don't want to uninstall anything before making sure all my presets/actions/plugins/etc are moved over.  Thanks!

You should be looking for help in whichever product forum you are refering to.

  • Photoshop CC does not recognize my plugins

I'm on a Mac. Photoshop CC does not recoginize my plugins that I had in CS5 like Silver Efex Pro, Topaz plugins, etc.  How can I fix this? I tried copying the plugins from the Plugins folder in Photoshop CS5 to the Plugins folder in Photoshop CC but that did not work.
    Thanks, Tom

You will have to get the proper CC compatible updates from the plug-in vendors. This behavior is intentional, since incompatible legacy plug-ins will crash the program otherwise.

  • Photoshop CS6 Filter Gallery Plugin Missing after Creative Cloud Last update!

I have a new 15" macbook pro, and have the set requirements to run Photoshop CS6 even after the recent updates.  However, I still cannot access the "Filter Gallery", and when I went to find the so called "Filter Gallery" plugin folder--what do you know that plugin is missing all together.  I don't even have it anymore!  I've already done the Preferences, show all plugins, etc... deal and this is not the issue here.  My Filter Plugin is missing all together, and my macbook pro was purchased brand new from the Mac store, 3-4 months ago.
What is the suggestion for me in this case?  I have been a paying Adobe Creative Cloud member since day one, when it first became available, and now I'm over the top upset over this problem!  How can I fix this missing plugin?

Well after much research that I did on my own, I came across this link that help shed some light to the problem I listed above.
Here's the link that explains how to get your "Filter Gallery" to show and not be grayed out.  Unfortunately, it appears Adobe has to work on upgrading this Filter Gallery to work to part with 16-bit images, vs the current 8-bit.
click on link where it explains this in details, and shows how to fix the problem I had.

  • Automap plugins and Logic 64 Bit

Okay basics first: Mac Pro 2.66 Quad, Logic 9.1.5, OSX 10.6.8, Automap 4.1
Did everything according to procedure. Wrapped plugins in Automap first. Opened Logic in 32 bit mode, revalidated plugins, etc.
So here is my problem, in a batch of automap plugins some show up in Logic 64 Bit some not. Within a specific manufacturer some might show up and some might not or none at all. It seems very random.
I have tried deleting the au manager cache, stripping out plugins and adding one at a time. No good.
Is this a bug or is there something else I should try?
The non automap plugins all show up fine. This only seems to affect 32 bit automapped plugins and only some not all!

I just tested it on Snow Leopard in 64bit and found:
My digidesign 003r not recognized (digidesign core not 64bit)
    no third party plugins recognized
I am absolutely sure this is because none of my 3rd party plugs are 64 bit yet, which makes complete sense! In 32bit mode, everything worked fine.
I did notice that in 64bit it was blazingly fast so I am now not looking forward to all my 3rd party plugs and Digi hardware driver to play catchup.... (Usually takes years!)
I'm also very impressed at how fast 9.1 was released!
    Bobs
People trying 64bit, remember Apple states the following:
The following features are not currently available when using Logic Pro 9.1 in 64-bit mode.
    Firewire streaming of video
    Digital Cinema Desktop
    AAF import and export
    EuCon control surface support
Automap of parameters with control surfaces
    OMF import and export
    Conversion to MP3
    Recycle (REX) file support
    ReWire support
    Vienna Symphonic Library Tool
    Logic Node processing
    AKAI format sample import
So if you need these things, stay in 32bit mode and wait for the next update.

  • ClassLoader for plugins

    Hi there,
I have an application where I would like to instantiate plugin classes. Now, for reasons that would be a bit too lengthy to explain right now I want each of these plugins to have their own classloader (i think, see the rest). Basically I want them not to share statics and I want to be able to see which classes are being loaded from within the plugins (so I can reject the instantiation of certain classes from within plugins, etc.).
I've tried extending URLClassLoader but even if I explicitly call a loadClass on my classloader any classes instantiated from within the class I created with my classloader use the original application class loader.
Can anyone point me in the direction? So the two features I need are :
    - Each plugin needs it's own statics and such
    - I need to reject instantiation of certain classes, but only if this is attempted from within plugin code
Is this possible? And if so, what's the most elegant way to accomplish it.
Any help would be much appreciated.

When you set up a URLClassloader the default behaviour is that it delegates class requests to the parent classloader (generally the system classloader) and only when the parent classloader returns "not found" does it attempt to load the class itself.
So your URLCLassLoader will not, itself, load any class which is present on the class path. You must place the plugin in a separate jar and ensure that no class with the same FQN exists on the class path. Further when a class accesses a class through a reference it asks the classloader which loaded it (not necessarily that from which it was requested) so if a class load is delegated then any referenced classes will be requested from the classloader it was delegated to.

  • Can I reinstall GB '09 without losing filters, loops, etc?

My GB '09 that I use for creating my podcast on my iMac has been getting a little flakey of late.  For example, the digital timer no longer runs while I'm recording.  I'm thinking a re-install might fix that and other minor problems.  But if I reinstall, will I lose the loops, filters, plugins, etc. that I have and rely on?
    Thanks!

Ugh, quite an ordeal! Sorry to hear that, but glad you seem to be back up and running.
As for your own loops, you may just need to reindex them.

As a troubleshooter, I've always been amazed at the number of files people stash on their desktop, number of installed applications, number of installed plugins, etc... Some people try to fill their hard drives to an extreme. The lesson learned here, which I hope to pass on to anyone reading this tip, keep it simple. Only install what you need, and nothing more. Archive away anything you wish to keep for posterity, but don't just let it hang out unless you might need it right away. Backup your data religiously, and remember to keep at least two copies of your data, and preferably at least one off site.
For every added driver, font, plugin, and widget you might find one that doesn't work well with another, or one that may not have been tested with your operating system. If you don't ensure they are known to work well together, you are building what is idiomatically called a "house of cards" or "jalopy."
And the more you add, the more that can go wrong. The more you add, the longer you'll spend the time of you or your troubleshooter solving problems. And remember, time itself is money. So be careful, and only add what you need to your system. Practice good judgement. If unsure if something extra is necessary, ask on the board.

  • Duplicated plugins on my computer

I admit to being quite ignorant about browsers and plugins etc. Perhaps somebody can enlighten me a little on the following.
I note that I have npqtplugin2.dll installed and also versions 3,4,5,6,7 as well.
There are items listed, for example concerning mpeg, that appear in more than one of these sections. Does this cause any conflict or slow down the system at all? Why so many separate dll's for one version (7.6.2)?

It had to do with updates that were pushed out for Windows by Microsoft to prepare for the Windows 8 launch. The updates caused the OS to react to the printer's software differently and the only way to fix it is to uninstall and reinstall using version 28.8, or higher, of the HP software. For some printers like the Deskjet 3050A, this happened even before Microsoft really started pushing Win 8 pre-release updates.
