Plus sign not showing up next to tabs (to enable opening of new tab).

Plus sign not showing up next to tabs (to enable opening of new tab).
Can I toggle a setting in about:config?
Have turned off all add-ons, and re-started but plus sign did not show up. I am using FF4.0.1.

Hi.
I have fixed the problem.
I was asked to "Restore Defualt Set" originally.
After doing that, I wanted to "customize" the sidebar as there were a few toolbar items I wanted displayed.
I found that the "Plus sign" is a "toolbar item".
So I simply dragged it next to the right of the tab/s (up top) and dropped it. Now everything is back to normal, and I can open new tabs with the "Plus sign".
Thankyou for all your help.
I hope this answer can also help others at some time.
All The Best.

  • How do I get a Vista 64 bit XP machine to show a "+" icon on the tab bar to "Open a new tab" and the "Open a new tab" icon on the far right of the Bookmarks tool bar?

I have Firefox 4.0.1 installed on two laptops, one with Windows Vista, 64 bit and the other with Windows XP. Both machines have the "Open a new tab" icon on the far right of the Bookmarks tool bar. The XP machine also has a + icon on the tab bar to "Open a new tab" while the Vista machine does not have that + icon. I like using that; is there any way to get it on the Vista machine?

After weeks of trying, I stumbled on the solution:
    # Right-click on an empty section of the Tab Strip, select Customize... and the Customize Toolbar window will open.
    # At the bottom of the Customize Toolbar window, there are additional options for changing the appearance of the icons in your toolbars. From the Show drop-down menu, you can choose what to display in the toolbars — Icons, Text, or Icons and Text together. By default, Firefox just shows Icons.
    # Select Icons and Text
    # When you are finished making changes, click Done to close the Customize Toolbar window.

  • I can only open a new tab by right clicking on an item in an already open tab and selecting open in new tab

I can only open a new tab by right clicking on an item in an already open tab and selecting open in new tab. Nothing else works e.g. File, New Tab, or clicking on the New Tab to the right of the last tab.

Uninstall the '''''Ask Toolbar'''''. It can cause that problem.

  • My original page is no longer tabbed, and when opening a new tab, I can't go back to the original page without closing all of the tabs.

In the past, if I didn't have all of the tabs opened, or just opened a new window, the page would still be in a tab if I opened up new tabs. Now, if I hit the "+", I get a tab. I can't get back to the original page without closing all of the tabs.
Example: I open ebay.com in a window. I hit "+" and go to cnn.com. I want to go back to what I was viewing on ebay, and I can't see it, unless I close the cnn window.

Firefox is coded to open new tabs in a blank page. That may change in Firefox 4. I don't know.
In the meantime, there is an add-on called Tab Mix Plus that I think provides that option. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1122/

  • I get a "JavaScript Application - Reference Error: XPCSafeJSObjectWrapper is not defined" error every time I try to open a new tab.

Just like the title says, starting with Firefox 4 Beta 6 or 7, I forgot. Any time I try to open a new blank tab (sometimes even when I start up Firefox and the app tabs load) I get an error that says "JavaScript Application - Reference Error: XPCSafeJSObjectWrapper is not defined" If I close it everything works as normal again (until I open a new tab) but it is very annoying to have to do this. Is there any fix for this or is the bug just still there?

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • I am unable to open new tabs, in any way I attempt to do so. I have checked the settings and they are fine, so it's not those. The only way I can open a new tab is to right click on a link and instruct it to open in a new tab.

Any way I attempt to open new tabs, be it clicking on the new tab button or using the short-cut Ctrl-t, I am unable to open any new tabs on my browser window.
The only way I have found that I can open a new tab is to right-click on a link and instruct that link to open in a new window.

Try disabling the Ask Toolbar extension.

Ask, and other items, can get installed along with "free" software that you download from the internet. Be careful about looking for "opt-out" options for installing toolbars, search engines, virus scanners, and other "extras" when installing software.

  • New Tab won't open a new tab

For the past two days I have not been able to open a new tab after my home pages have loaded. The only way I can get a new tab to open is if I hit F1 for firefox and then go from there or open a link from an email.

Please disable or uninstall the Ask toolbar extension to solve your problem. It has a known incompatibility with Firefox. See [[Uninstalling add-ons]].

  • When I click the + button on the tab strip to open a new tab, search.conduit opens. How do I change it to get the original firefox tab page?

I recently installed utorrent. The problem started after that. The home page is Google, but on opening a new tab, I don't get the thumbnails that is usually displayed, instead search.conduit page is opened. How can I get my old settings back? I even uninstalled utorrent to see if this problem goes away, but it doesn't.

Thank you, but I was able to solve the problem already. There was a button named "Remove" just below the space where we enter the item to be searched in a search engine. On clicking this, I was able to return to the original new tab page. I wasn't being trigger happy while installing utorrent, there was nothing there indicating that conduit will be installed. Nevertheless, thanks a lot for trying to help me in solving my problem.

  • Firefox does not show url in navigation toolbar while loading webpage (in new tab)

Firefox 3.6 when opening a link in new tab the url does not show in navigation toolbar while loading the web page. All ypu see is "Type a Web Adress" until the page load.
Before with my older version the URL was visible in navigation toolbar even before page started loading. How can I get this back?

A couple of possible causes. First check for an incompatible add-on, for details of how to do that see the [[troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article.
Another possible cause is a problem with the file that stores bookmarks. One of the symptoms is the URL not being updated in the Location Bar as you browse. For details on this see [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite locked or damaged places.sqlite].
