Need some help - having problems with Dell Workstation BIOS not making all RAM usable
Hi,
I'm having problems upgrading the RAM in my T7400 workstation. I previously had 8 x 1 Gb modules and I'm now trying to use 8 x 2Gb (total 16 Gb). This fills up all 8 DIMM slots on the motherboard.
The replacement RAM is of the correct type, PC2-5300F DDR2, CL5, EEC Fully Buffered (same type as I had before). Each stick is also the same manufacturer (HP Micron), size, rank, timings etc. The problem is the BIOS won't recognise more than 8Gb as usable (it does detect all 8 sticks as it lists out all of the modules).
This is what I've tried so far:
Tested each module independently in DIMM slot 1 and it's recognised fine. (And I know all of the slots work, since I previously had 8 x 1Gb working ok).
I tried putting 8 Gb in DIMM slots 1-4, still only reporting 4 Gb usable (all modules detected).
I ran memory tests, everything checked out fine.
I reset the CMOS with the RTC jumper (suggested elsewhere on the forums).
I could find no bios option to remap memory.
Windows 7 Pro also shows 16Gb installed but only 8Gb usable (this is not an OS issue, since the BIOS is showing the same problem, before it even gets to loading Windows).
I haven't tried flashing the BIOS but I doubt this is the issue. I've been through the changelog of each revision after mine and it doesn't mention anything about fixes to memory detection (Also similar reports of my issue said upgrading the BIOS made no difference). I'd rather not mess things up when everything else runs smoothly and I'm very much out of warranty.
Of course, Dell won't help directly without trying to bill me for technical support.
Can anyone please suggest anything else I can try?
Thanks for reading.Dimms that show half of the ram are High Density 4 rank and not compatible. Any ole Joes crab shack ram doesn't work. Only Specific vendors ram works. Buying ram based on a cheap price almost guarantees that its high density. High density modules have less ram chips on them and are therefore cheaper.
DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Fully Buffered • ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 1024Meg x 72 •
HIGH Density Ram WILL NOT WORK.

Having problems with Startup Disk Installing Panther
I'm having problems installing Panther, I currently have a 9.2 OS. I get a message that the startup disk could not select the new os as the start up disk. Has anyone had this problem before? I've done all my updates, firmware included. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
JulieI bought the disc on ebay, its for an emac.
That disk isn't compatible with your computer; it will only work on a specific eMac model. You need a retail Mac OS X installation package, which is available here.

Anyone else having problems with Mail after installing Mountain Lion?
Since upgrading to mountain lion, I have had a number of problems with Mail. At the moment, it is predominantly when my desktop imac goes to sleep overnight. In the morning, it will not receive mail. The app will not close, so I force quit it. Trying to reopen Mail after that just does not happen, so I have to restart my machine to get things going again. Any tips?
If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS. -
I am having problems with iChat after installing Lion, can anyone help?
I installed Lion this week after I installed everything seemed to be working great. However, if I open iChat and then log in and log out it will not let me log back into iChat
Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
Set the port to 443(press return/enter(you might have to tick and untick SSL for 443 to stick)).
Log back in again. -
Having problems with upgrading or installing 8.0.2 on vista 64? Read me
After trying to auto update i received a msg to download and do manual install. After doing that it would roll back when its was almost complete with the upgrade. So I uninstalled itunes to do a fresh install and the same thing occured.
After working on my problem for a couple of hours I discovered that xfire was the problem.
Well the real problem is that the installer didn't check to see if another program was using a dll it was trying to modifiy. For some odd reason both xfire and itunes both use a dll file.
Weird, but after shutting down xfire, my install went thru no problem.
Hope this helps everyone.I'm facing similar problems too but more importantly, my iPhone 5 keeps going off every 5-10 minutes or so. Its really frustrating as I'm missing so many calls and there is nothing I can do to fix this It was working fine when I updated to IOS 8 but since this 8.0.2 update its just not working. It goes off in the middle of using or on standby. When it turns back on it takes years for it to actually become functional. Once it does, it has little moments where the battery reads 20% one moment then 48% the other While using safari I noticed it said Searching.. (for signal) yet had 3G by its side and internet working ..??! Its really frustrating as yesterday I needed to use my phone in an actual emergency yet couldn't for nearly 10 minutes waiting for the phone to load..!!

the blue light on top of the printer blinks very fast and intermitenly. i cannot install the printer with wireless. I tried with the CD that came with the printer but the green install bar just stops and freezes. I have a 4 month old Dell laptop. Printer just purchased from HP is Laser Jet Professional P1102w.
Are there any third party firewalls installed (e.g. Kaspersky, Norton, BitDefender, etc.)? It sounds like something is blocking the software and third party firewalls have been known to block communication with the printer.
How far in the installation process do you get (what options are you able to get to)?
Is the USB cable connected at the start of the installation?
Do you receive any errors at all? If so, what are they?
Have you tried using Smart Install? Smart Install works by connecting the USB cable to the computer. By default, you should get a prompt to run a file. Running this file starts the Smart Install process.
This video is a good guide to Smart Install.

Having Problems with Powerbook After installing New(non-apple) ram
I had a total of 768 mb of ram on my Powerbook G4 1.5 but I decided that I wanted to max it out to 1.25 gb. So I went out to the store and bought a used but tested 1gb Patriot ram chip to replace my 512mb . I put it in and went to system info to see if my computer detected it, and it did, it reported that I had 1.25gb just as I wanted. The next morning I was excited about using my newly upgraded computer ( I left it in sleep all night I don't know if that could have caused any problems) and when i turned it on first thing i got was that semi-transparent shut down your computer screen when OSX has experienced a problem, I had never seen this error message before, I can tell you I was pretty angry. I restarted my powerbook and then I logged in, I used Onyx and forced to run maintenance, thinking that might help, but again the comp crashed when i tried to open Onyx. and then again the next time trying to open Entourage, then AGAIN the next time trying to open Safari. What is going ON!? Now I am on my laptop again but i took out the 1gb and put back in my apple 512mb, so far so good but why did my 1gb not work?? I would like to have 1.25gb so ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, EricAcctually yes it was returnable and I did return it. But before i saw your comment I bought a new not pre-owned chip of the same kind, it also didnt work so I will take your advice and purchase a chip that supports bus slewing, maybe i'll go for the more expensive ones just for some added security
By the way thanks for the help,
Eric -
Having problems with Indsign CS5 - install onto 2nd machine successful - But..
But indesign won't open any files - going into an endless spiral of not responding?? I have installed and re-installed twice to no avail.. ; Photoshop & Illustrator all good ( First installed version of same license on laptop is not open during the second install process as described in installing on second machine single user?? what is happening? Brand new imac 27" top spec with the power but can't run with it on indesign.... hopefully just a little issue that can be resovled easily?? Thanks for any advice....
Quit InDesign (force quit, if necessary).
Move the following folder to the desktop:
Mac OS: [Startup Disk]/Library/Applications Support/Adobe/SING/
Note: This is in the Library folder on the root of your startup disk. There is a similar path in your user folder, but that is not the path you need to work in.
Relaunch InDesign. -

Any help id be grateful.......
L. TambiahI think you're not able to run tomcat propery. What you can do is that if it is tomcat version of 4.x or so search a file named start tomcat and stop tomcat they may be in your dir where you have installed tomcat or in the start menu and then run it from there then you'll see on your console window, will be some messages and it'll pause after some time don't close this window ok then again send request
http://localhost:8080/
I hope it'll work -

I downloaded itunes but when i try to install i get an error saying "There is a problem with the windows install. A programe needed to install could not be open"
can anyone help?Ok, Below is what worked for me somewhat.
Okay ... try downloading and saving a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe to your PC from the Apple website:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Now download a trial version of WinRAR:
http://www.rarlab.com/download.php
Open the iTunesSetup.exe with WinRAR, and try to run the standalone install of Apple Application Support from the AppleApplicationSupport.msi you find in there.
It works now BUT there are still problems. It is not allowing or recognizing my Cd/DVD player and i CANT burn. Looking still for this fix. -
I am having problem with Segate free agent drive.
Since I installed Mountain lion on my iMac 24" I am having problem with a previously installed Seagate drive. When I am in finder and click on the Free Agent drive, I get the following error. VTDecoderXPCService quit unexpectedly. I click reopen and a few seconds later I get same message. This did not occur when I was using Snow Leopard Very annoying. Any suggestions? Note I have many movies and important data on this drive and don't want to lose. What does this error mean and is there some way to correct?

Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time?
