Plz help my external drive isn't being mounted

I have a WD external hard drive, and it stopped mounting on my MAC. I think it happened when I tried to delete the alias in Mac HD/Volumes/. Now when I plug in my drive it only mounts the alias in Volumes but not the actual drive. When I click on the alias it says that the original can't be found. Anybody know how to fix this? Plz help.

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.4.6 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.
Good Luck!
Cheers!

  • External drive isn't being recognized

I have two external drives, each one an image of the internal drives. I have moved around my entire stereo and computer setups, new desks, that kind of thing. Now one of the external backups is being 'seen' and the other is not. Both appear to be working by way of lights on the front of them, but only one is showing in the finder as recognized.
I tried switching out the USB cables and that made no difference, so I ruled out the USB cable possibility. I tried plugging them into different usb ports, no difference. The 'dead' one appears to turn on and has power, is confirmed plugged into the computer, but isn't being 'seen' by the finder.
It is an IOgear ION external hard drive.
Any troubleshooting ideas or suggestions on what I can do? I would like to ensure it is working as it is intended to safeguard the video data I have on it.
I have a powermac G4 1.42 duel, mirror doors, 2 gigs internal ram, latest updates on all software available, using USB 2.0 card/adapter.

I've also been getting an image with the folder and question mark. I've tried everything on the apple support page but it doesn't seem to work either.

Well, I tried all of your suggestions and they didn't work -- no surprise because I was trying to backup to my external c.d. disk.  Duh!  The application for the home is in the mail.

  • My thumb drive isn't being recognized on the windows.

My thumb drive is being recoginzed on my mac but it is not recognized on Windows. It said "Unkown Category" I believe it happened when I did something to my thumb drive so that it will be put on password. I don't want that anymore, I just want my thumb drive to be recoginzed on both windows and mac. Please help.

You have to erase the drive to reformat. If you have any data on the drive, copy it to your computer or an external drive temporarily.
Open Disk Utility, select the drive, and then the Erase tab. There is a drop down box in that tab which allows you to select the format. Once you have selected FAT (32), click the erase button.

  • Help re external drive

Can you tell me the easy way to use an external drive to put my songs on please? I have 20000 songs on my Mac Pro rapidly running out of space. I have ordered a 500gb small portable so it wont be problem to carry around.
Do I need to always plug in external drive even if I don't want to use iTunes ?
Can you list how to do it in easy step by step stages as I am not too good with pcs
    Thanks

    See the built-in Help.
Try One Partition with Mac OS Extended (HFS+) Journaled format. If you have trouble doing this yourself, maybe find a local Apple Store or Apple/Mac User Group and have someone help you. Or date a computer geek for a week, get him to do it, then dump him.
If you have already gone through the process, what is happening now that makes you think that the drive is not working properly? Does iMovie still complain about the drive format? Can you actually copy data to the drive and it works as expected? What does Apple System Profiler report about the drive? (under the Apple Menu, select About this Mac, then click the More Info button, expand the little triangles to show info about hardware and volumes, etc.)
(Not sure if this is an issue, not sure if I should even mention it, but Western Digital drives don't always seem to work that great with the Mac, hard to say if that's anything related to your issues, just search the forums for WD or Western Digital to see what other user experiences have been. I'm sure there may be some who are really happy with them too. You might be able to store photo/movie data on the drive just fine, but you might not be able to boot the Mac OS X from it, for example.)

  • My external drive is not being recognized by ITunes library

How do I change either the software, or the hardware drive letter, so that they work together as one?
My WiFi was installed as a K:/ drive and it cancelled out my external drive which was also drive K:/. Now my Itunes software will not recognize my external drive. Any suggestions folks?
Thanks for anthing you may suggest.
    Rich

Plug in the flash drive in question. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder. In the lefthand sidebar do you see your flash drive listed? It will appear sort of like this:
Select the topmost listing then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Select one partition from the Partition Layout dropdown menu. Click on the Options button and set the partition scheme to MBR and click on the OK button. Set the Format Type to exFAT from the dropdown menu. Click on the Apply button.
You should be able to use the flash drive on both Macs and PCs.

  • External Drives are not being recognized

Why is my Brand New Macbook Pro not recognizing any external drives? Neither Flash nor external?

CClinton, thank you very much. I did as you suggested, with one day to spare! Took it to the Genius Bar, although the computer passed spec tests, the computer did present external drive issues, some sort of lag-time and he said the computer was not storing things properly. Apple replaced the computer with no problem. The replacement computer is running much better, it is almost inexplicable....but ther is a noticeable difference somehow. The computer is faster and more responsive, and the battery does not poop out as quickly.
    Thanks again....

  • Trying to switch start up disks but the external drive isn't visible

I just got a MBP C2D and trying to boot off the clone of my old system....the external drive which holds the clone is not visible on the list of start up disks.
my old system was a PPC PB.
    is this fixable?
    regards,
    Eric

    Hello,
Unfortunately this is not possible. The code needed to boot an Intel Mac and PPC Mac are completely different. You can try to do an archive and install over the drive but I can't promise that will work. Good Luck.

  • External drive error, does not mount: "Partition map check failed because no slices were found"

    Hardware: MacBook late 2009 (2.26Ghz Core 2 Duo 2 GB RAM 250GB HDD) running 10.9.4, Hackintosh MacPro (3.29Ghz i3 16GB RAM 1TB HDD) running 10.9.4, external 3 TB Seagate Backup+ drive
As you can can see from the screenshot below,
The external drive was initially plugged in a Netgear WNDR4500 router by USB to be used as NAS. I was in the middle of updating the firmware when there was a power outage. Upon reboot, the drive no longer mounts, whatever it is plugged in (router, Mac, PC, etc.).
I ran DiskUtility on the partition map and volume, same errors. Here's an what I see:
As you can see above, the "Mount" icon is greyed out and I get the error message "Partition map check failed because no slices were found". If I select "the Archive" partition, the "Mount" icon is not greyed out but clicking it doesn't do anything. My HDD is basically unreadable.
I issued a few Terminal commands to see what was the problem, here are the results:
    What can I do?
Currently running analysis on TestDisk and it is 50% after 48hrs. Need some help!

@ Allan Eckert: Unfortunately, reformatting is out of the question, I have 5 years of work on this!
@ Loner T: Yes, the firmware did successfully upgrade after router reboot and a bit of troubleshoot.
Thanks for the quick replies. Keep 'em coming!

  • External Hard Drive isn't being found in Time Machine. Cant back up my mac.

Just bought a samsung 500gb external hard drive because I need to backup my mac to do a full system reboot because it is completely messed up after downloading the new yosemite update.
But when I go to time machine it isn't offered as an option for a backup disk. I go to disk utility and I can't reformat the hard drive from MS-DOS (FAT) to Mac OS extended (Journaled). I try to change it and it reverts back straight away and I can't change the name of my hard drive. I don't understand what I have to do, i'm currently in safe boot because my laptop runs too slow in normal mode.
    Any help would be great.

Select the icon of the drive you want to partition—not any of the volume icons below it—in the Disk Utility window. Select the Partition tab.
From the Partition Layout menu in the window, select One Partition.
From the Format menu, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Click the Options button and select GUID Partition Table.
Click the Apply button and confirm when prompted.

  • My external hard drive isn't being recognized

I have an extrenal drive I used to back up my dvds for faster viewing and the drive is going out I think. It will disconnect midway through movies, when uploading or downloading to/from it it will sometimes just disconnect itself. about 75-80% of the time its plugged in it wont show up. I can't attempt to transfer more than about 3 gigs of information or else if ejects itself, and it won't even show up in disk utility.
How can I get this crazy drive to be recognized so I can keep working on transfering the data back off it before it dies completely

OK, so are there any volumes listed for that disk in Disk Utility? And how does it not allow you to repair the disk? Is the option grayed out? Try clicking on the disk AND the volume and comparing the options for each.
    For example:
    149.1 GB FUJITSU MHW2160BHPL Media
    |- Macintosh HD
    |- disk0s3
186.3 GB Prolific PL3507 Combo Device *(On this disk…)*
    |- Time Machine *(…here is my Time Machine volume.)*
    |- Windows Extra

  • External HD isn't being recognized

Ran a clean-up defrag on external HD... Now I can't access the drive, Windows Explorer is just labeling it "Drive L" and I just got an error window stating that I need to format the disk.  Won't formatting the disk wipe it clean?  Help!  Drive is an external picture storage......Panic Mode!!!!

    Golden808,
You'll need to inspect the drive's status.  DO NOT tamper with it's present status.
    Press START button
Open Control Panel (you must be in Classic View).
    Open Administrative Tools
Click to open Computer Management.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
In the left pane, under Storage, click Disk Management.
Your boot drive will show up a Disk0. Stay away from that.
The added drive should show up as Disk1.  (See below for an example of an external 1TB.)
This example shows a drive with 2 partitions. What you need to report is the status.
This example is Disk1, Basic, 465.76 GB, and Online.   What does your Disk1 state ?    RAW ???
