PM 6500 with OS 8.6 TCP/IP Settings - How To Activate it to configure it

I am trying to setup friends OS 8.6 based PM 6500 box to be able to connect to the network , but I am having problems even starting that process. I am trying to open TCP/IP preferences via TCP/IP Control Panel and each time I try I get: "The file "TCP/IP Preferences" could not be opened because it is locked or being used by another application"
Now, I am not experienced with OS 8.6, but I do know that the TCP/IP is not active (info obtained via system info), thus my questions are:
- How do I activate TCP/IP ?
- Does OS 8.6 has terminal app and how do I activate it ?
- I have OS 9 on DVD which I got when I purchased my PowerBook (why they had this in I have no idea since I am using 10.4.4 upgraded from 10.4.0), is there anywhere OS 9 on CD's or a download somewhere ?
Any info will be highly appreciate it!

I am trying to setup friends OS 8.6 based PM 6500 box to be able to connect to the network ...You didn't mention whether the network in question was local (a LAN) or the WWW (a WAN), but you are certainly on the path by considering TCP/IP to be central to either. Faced with the messages that you have been, your most probable difficulty is corruption of the preference file.
As Grant and Niel have suggested, trashing the TCP/IP preference file is a first and easier course. That can be followed by a clean install of OS 8.6 as a second, if the first is ineffectual. The second course will necessitate some further time spent in restoration of other (third-party and optional Apple) extensions, control panels and (perhaps) preference files from Previous System Folder to the new System Folder. It's either that or reinstallation of all third-party and optional Apple applications from scratch, if you wish to be ultra-safe.
OS X, by and large, has all the applications/control panels to do with networking in one place in System Preferences, rather than dotted about under different heads as Sharing Setup, AppleTalk, Users and Guests, TCP/IP, File Sharing, Network, Sharing, and many other names as they are in OS 9 and earlier. The OS X panels show their origins in their pre-X antecedents, which are no more onerous to set up, but admittedly not centralized. Your misfortune has been to meet a (probably) corrupt file, and unilluminating screen messages showing that the OS was as mystified as you were. The advice that you have already been given should, nonetheless, get you out of the corner.
You mentioned OS 9 as if you were considering it for the 6500. Certainly the Mac can cope with OS 9.1, but 128MB of RAM (max.) and 300MHz (max.) do not together promise more than a few improvements over OS 8.6.

On SUP-720-10GE, I modified ACL to 'permit udp any any' but not found any matching packets. There are plenty of IP phones connected directly to this switch belongs to voice VLAN. I applied VLAN based QoS under voice VLAN and other VLANs too.
I observed different thing on SUP 2T. I saw packets matching ACL statement 'permit udp any any' but when I took off this line, ACL was not showing packets matching.

This is a potentially complex issue.
Is this SUP configured to run as IOS native or CatOS Hybrid?
While in ROMMON can you do the 'dev' command and see whad drives are recognized. Then 'dir' the drives that the SUP recognizes.
Can you provide the screen captures as it boots?
You would be bette served by hacing a TAC case.

  • How to Configure Transparent caching on Cat 6500 with CSM in bridge mode?

    hi.
I found How to Configure Transparent caching on Cat 6500 with CSM in routed mode.
    But,
I need help How to Configure Transparent caching on Cat 6500 with CSM in bridge mode?
Please let me know sample configuration.
    thanks.

    Hi,
I wrote the document you mentioned and I also wrote the one below.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/hw/modules/ps2706/products_configuration_example09186a00802c1201.shtml
The one with the SSLM is a bridge mode config.
If you replace the SSLM with a cache [or a farm of caches] it would be a similar config.
Replace the SSL21 vserver with an HTTP vserver [most important is to keep the vlan configured on each vserver]

    Gilles.

  • Spooler.exe tries to communicate with shared printer on TCP:47546 port

    Hi,
    We have:
    1. AD
    2. Win7 Pro Workstations
    3. Symantec Endpoint Protection - allowed only SMB ports (135,137,138,139,445), denied all other communications incl broadcast.
    4. WS2 - computer with shared printer
Issue: As I can see in WS1 SEP Logs spooler.exe tries to communicate with WS2 on the TCP:47546 port. SEP blocks those communications and shared printer stays "grayed". The solution I found is to restart spooler. Sometimes it helps
Why does it happen? What should I do to force spooler to comunicate on standard SMB ports?
UPD: Printer shared and as \\WS2\Printer and as \\IP\printer - in both cases the issue persists

    Hi,
I am Chetan Savade from Symantec Technical Support Team.
You can either add printer to excluded host.
To add the printer to "Excluded Hosts":
    1.  Open your Intrusion Prevention Policy.
    2.  Choose to Settings on the left.
    3.  Check the box for Enable excluded hosts and then click the
    Excluded Hosts... button.
    4.  Add the IP address of your printer and choose Okay.
Can refer the following article to create remote port exception.
Permitting clients to browse for files and printers in the network

  • How do i send an array of clusters with variable size over TCP/IP?

    Hi,
I'm trying to send an array of clusters with varible size over TCP/IP,. But I'm facing the following problems:
    1) I need to accept the size of array data from the user and increase the size dynamically.
I'm doing this using the property node but how do I convey the new size to my TCP read?
    2) I need to wire an input to my 'bytes to read' of the TCP read.
But the number of bytes to read changes dynamically
How do I ensure  the correct number of bytes are read and reflected on the client side?
    3) Is there anyway I can use global varibles over a network such that their values are updated just as if they would on one computer?
Will be a great help if someone posts a solution!
    Thank you...

its no longer just the first four bytes that specify the length of the data, it could be more as my array of cluster can be pretty huge.
Instead of writing long and complicated sentences that make little sense, why don't you simply show us your code?
What does any of this have to do with xml strings???? I don't see how using a local variable as type input changes anything. The user cannot interact with "property nodes", just with controls. Please clarify. Once the array of clusters is flattened to a string you only have one size that describes the size of the data, no matter how huge it is (as long as it is within the limits of I32). Similarly, you read the string of that same defined length and form the array of clusters from it. How big are the strings? What is your definition of "huge"?
Here's is my earlier code, but now dealing with an array of clusters. Not much of a change. Since you have columns, you want 2D. Add as many diensions you want, but make sure that the control, diagram constant, and indicator all match.
The snipped shows for a 1D array, while the attached VI shows the same for a 2D array. Same difference.

  • 6500 with SLB blade dropped the packets from HA device.

A weird behavior observed in 6500 with SLB blade. the topology is as below:
    client--HA---6500 with SLB----server farm
The first Syn packet reached the 6500 with client MAC address as source MAC and can be forwarded to the server correctly. But due to HA vendor special behavior, the second Syn packet's source MAC is rewritten to HA device MAC address and this Syn is dropped by the 6500.
Is this a special feature for 6500? And is it possible to change this behavior?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for your reply.
1, HA device is from other vendor. It works as transparent mode and the session will be processed by 2 blades in the round-robin schedule.
The first SYN is processed by the master and reach the 6500 with client MAC as the source MAC. the second SYN is processed by the slave and the source MAC is rewritten to the slave's interface mac. This SYN packet is dropped by either 6500 or CSM, not quite sure.
2, The image on the 6500 is as below:

I am trying to configure Transparent caching on Cat 6500 with CSM in routed mode, but facing some problems in it , also I have gone thru the example config on cisco site for transparent caching using CSM on Cat 6500 , but the above does not fit my clients requirement.

    Cache Engines and Real servers
The clients as well as real servers are on seperate VLANs (L3) and the requirement is to load balance the internet traffic using cache engines.
I'd really appreciate any helpful suggestions or any useful links/docs/info on this.

    Hello Joerg,
    Thanks for the reply.
I have already gone thru the sample config shown by this weblink, however this link refers to configuring transparent caching on the CSM in BRIDGED MODE ( i.e both the client and server vlans are having the same IP address ) but in our case , we have multiple L3 VLANS on the CAT6509 having IP addresses in different SUBNETS , and the Real servers to be used for caching also exist on one of these VLANS. Thus, the scenario described by the Weblink does not apply here. Also , in the configuration referred by the above weblink, the VLAN 100 is configured as client , however the endusers are shown to be on vlan200 which is configured as SERVER VLAN in the CSM.
Dont you think there is something wrong here, I mean the endusers should be on VLAN 100 (Client) and real servers on VLAN 200 (SERVER).
So, I have to configure CSM in routed mode ( i.e both the client and server vlans will have seperate IP addresses in different subnets ) and the endusers will be on all VLANS .
Pls let me know , how I can implement this solution.
    Thanks again

We are having the same exact problem. We've done what you've tried with no luck also. Strange thing is that in another building we have the same setup but only with a 6148V blade and that Tandberg has no issues. We're using a 6148AF with the one we're having problems with. We've tried with a 6348 blade and it works fine. I'm thinking it's something with the 6148AF firmware (ver. 8.2(2)).
Were you able to solve your problem?

  • No internet access using manual TCP/IP settings after 10.4.6

I stopped being able to access the internet with manual TCP/IP settings in the Network Preferences after updating from 10.4.5 -> 10.4.6.
When I change settings to use DHCP everything works fine, but I need to get the manual settings working as I use them quite often when configuring/setting-up routers.
This happens with both the AirPort and Ethernet interfaces, so it doesn't matter which interface I use to connect through.
My network Locations with manual TCP/IP settings have worked fine with 10.4.5, under the same networking hardware (routers, cables, etc...).
This occurs both at home (with my Linksys wireless router) and at work (with a DrayTek router).
At home, this problem occurs with both my PB12 and my wife's iBook12, after the 10.4.6 update was applied.
At work, all Windows laptops can connect to the internet using manual TCP/IP settings, but not my PB12.
    Example of my settings:
    - IP: 192.168.1.99
    - Mask: 255.255.255.0
    - Router: 192.168.0.1
    - DNS: <empty>
    - Domains: <empty>
    Already tried, without success:
    - verified disk -> no errors found on disk!
    - repaired permissions, using Disk Utility, rebooted and tested -> no connection!
    - tried with DNS=192.168.0.1 -> no connection!!
    - tried with DNS=[my ISP primary dns] -> still nothing!!!
    - even tried reapplying the combo update 10.4.5 -> of course, it didn't let me, as I'm now in 10.4.6!
Any thoughts or ideas to fix it and make it work in 10.4.6?
... other than archive&install, in order to downgrade!
    PB12'' @ 1,33 GHz w/ 768MB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yes, buy I also state in my original post that I:
    - tried with DNS=[my ISP primary dns] -> still nothing!!!
but yes, I probably should have titled it "No network access using..." (posting as 4:30 AM was probably not the best idea :D)
I understand I might have been a bit clumpsy posting my problem and appreciate everyone's corrections to what I wrote, but trust me that I have done a lot of tests and spent many hours on this... Bear in mind that I am using a network Location with manual definitions that was working before the update!
Anyway, as it happens, the likely culprit now seems to be more of a 3rd party software's inability to deal with 10.4.6 rather than the 10.4.6 itself!
I've disabled/unistalled/turnned off/deleted (depending on the app) anything NOT Apple that had anything to do with networking, be it for monitoring, controlling or managing (just to name a few: Little Snitch, Menu Meters, BrickHouse, etc, etc, etc...).
The Location with the manual settings is now working fine (at least at the office).
Over the next week or so I'll incrementaly re-install those 3rd party tools (which were most likely not up-to-date anyway) and see if something breaks at some point... but won't put much effort into it -- just happy to see it working again!
I'm closing this for now, as I don't have any more time for it (work is pilling up!)... If I manage to find out which version/app combination was causing the problem I'll post it back here!

  • TCP/IP settings for airport card

ok, first off...please take it easy on me...i'm a windows guy but am close to purchasing a mac for my girlfriend and also have an iPhone so please understand that i love macs, just don't know too much about them..yet
i have a need to set TCP/IP settings for an airport card when the mac connects to a specific SSID (Peanut Gang). the problem is due to the fact that when macs connect to a linksys WRE54G wireless repeater, they do not obtain the TCP/IP info. you can go into system prefs -> network and renew the lease and it obtains the info but i've been asked to "automate" this process.
ok, i'm not sure if it's possible but when i saw the "automator" section here i thought i would ask. i know how i could do it through scripting on a windows machine but i digress, ha!
    thanks

You may want to ask this over in the "Networking" group.
Also clarify whether you're having these issues with a mac you have, or just what.
Might want to specify what kind of mac is having this problem, too.
And be ready to explain just what you're asking when you say:"need to set TCP/IP settings for an airport card when the mac connects to a specific SSID"
There are some pretty good blokes in that discussion group.
    welcome

  • Early 08 MBPro-TCP/IP settings are not saved

On my home wireless network I have MAC address filtering enabled and broadcast SSID disabled. All MAC addresses are entered in the router's filter. An early 08 MBPro does not retain network settings for Verizon router on the network. When I look at the TCP/IP settings in network prefs I see they are nothing like other computers on my home network. If I click "assist me" then "diagnostics" in Airport setup I get walked through a process which allows me to choose the network I want to join. There is a list of available networks which does not include mine (since SSID is disabled) and a button which allows me to choose closed network, which I take. After entering my network's ID and WEP password I finally get connected and get a message that my connection is OK. Problem is, when I put the computer to sleep or restart I can't reconnect and the old settings which don't work reappear. It appears that the TCP/IP settings are not being saved. Could this be some corrupted preference of does it sound like a hardware problem? Thanks for any insights.

Odd. You may be able to repair this with the 10.5.7 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
Oh, and please be sure to re-boot your modem and router.

  • Missing TCP/IP settings for iPhone tethering (Bluetooth and USB)

Is it just me or Apple has completely disabled the TCP/IP settings for BT and USB connections for iPhone tethering (and possibly any other mobile devices)?
I can now only set the IP addresses and DNS server. No Proxies or WINS settings tabs.
I have also noticed that if you setup a USB tethering connection in Leopard and upgrade to Snow Leopard, the settings are still available, but NOT if you make a clean install of Snow Leopard and create a new iPhone USB tethering connection.
I always use a SOCKS5 when I'm using my tethering connection for security and better/faster connection with my manual proxy server setup. I find the new "options" in SL very limited, not only for my usage.

I got this to work again (in fact, I'm tethered right now
Here are the steps I followed:
    1) Upgraded to iTunes 9
    2) Upgraded iPhone to OS 3.1
    3) Removed device from Bluetooth Devices list on my MBP
    4) Removed Bluetooth PAN from Network preferences
    5) Restarted iPhone and MBP
    6) Set-up iPhone as a Bluetooth Device on MBP
    7) Enabled tethering on iPhone
    8) Connected to iPhone network via the Bluetooth icon on my MBP menu bar
    9) Verified that the blue "Internet Tethering" bar was on the iPhone
    10) Manually added Bluetooth PAN to my MBP network preferences (connect show as yellow, "IP cannot be assigned" message)
    11) Opened the Advanced pane and clicked the "Renew DHCP Lease" button
    12) IP was assigned!
I'm not sure if the first two steps contributed to the solution or not, but these are the steps that worked for me.
    Good luck to you all...

  • Configure DNS & Search Domains in TCP/IP Settings via Terminal?

    HI Folks,
I've been having a long standing battle trying to find out what is wrong with my machine, it's been running like a dog for a while and having recently added 2 new Macs to our network i recall that there was a setting missing - namely within the TCP/IP settings for the Built In Ethernet, the DNS Servers and Search Domains are not configured on my machine, but are on the new ones i've added (mine was my new foray into Macs so i maybe set it up wrong!)
However the main problem occurs when i try to edit the settings for the above from within System Preferences -> Network, i get a spinning beach ball of doom and have to Force Quit. Yet oddly i can access the setting fine when i am at home and not connected to the AD of the Windows Server Environment... which makes me think the events could be linked.... i thought it may have been Parallels and it's NAT settings, but given that all works perfectly at home i'm not so sure. Hence, as a process of elimination i'd like to try and get the correct settings for Search Domain etc to see if it helps, before i flatten the machine and reinstall Tiger completely!
The main issues i've been having with the machine can be found here:

    Hi Phil (and others!)
I opted for the easy choice, which did work... and have added the Search Domain info etc whilst at home... and touch wood today things seem to be working better, i can easily access network preferences etc and have had no hanging apps as yet...
I did try and use different locations for work and home, but sadly i ended up with a spinning beach ball of doom when i tried to change the location at work, so it was a slightly pointless exercise!!!
