PM G5 will not boot, Fan's run on full

I have a relatively new PowerMac G5, DP 2.0GHz (early 2005), and for the most part it has been excellent... a few days ago, i walked into my room to hear my computer running with all it's fans on full. since it would not respond to either keyboard or mouse to wake it, i powered it down (held power button) and restarted it.
When i restarted, my computer will get as far as the start-up chime, then the indicator LED will flash between bright and dull 3 times over the period of about 1.5 seconds, then stay solid for about 4 seconds, before flashing again. What is more, after about 30 seconds of this, the fans once again kick up to full speed, and will not slow down.
I can find no obvious reference to this anywhere in the manuals i have with me, nor on this site. I have checked the obvious (made sure everything internally and externally is securely in place) as well as removing and re-inserting the RAM etc. I can not get it to boot from a CD to run a hardware test.
has anyone else experianced anything like this? does anyone know what would be causing this, and if it is easily fixable? will i need to take it in to be looked at?

In the troubleshhoting section of the PowerMac manual they refer to the diagnostic status of the power LED, and descibe the various conditions. Also, If you run the system with the side door taken off but leave the plastic air deflector in place, you can view the status of the logic board's diagnostic LED's. Their status is also explained in the user's guide.

My MacBook will not boot up after running Software Update (Security update + Java?) earlier today. I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. I have tried restarts several times and tried to start up from my original system DVD - this makes no difference.
I called Apple support, tried resetting the power and PRAM - still no difference. He had no knowledge of other problems reported; although I note recent post may have same issue.
I cannot get an appointment at my Apple Store before Monday.
Any suggestions?

Still no success. When I hold down the option key when powering up I get the hard disk icon plus arrowhead (only). When clicking the arrowhead it goes to the gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel.
This happens both with DVD in slot and without DVD. the DVD image is not coming up on screen. When I start up without DVD the hard disk icon appears promptly. When I start with DVD in the DVD is spinning for a short period before the hard disk icon appears. On clicking the arrowhead to hard disk icon the DVD spins again for a while then stops. Apart from the DVD spinning, both situations result in gray screen + apple logo+ rotating gearwheel.

Hi! Run the hardware test that came with your computer to see if it boots. You could have a dead hard drive. You might also try booting from the OSX install disc with the hard drive unhooked. This would give you an idea if the hardware is ok. Tom

try rebooting in Recovery mode, but when you reach the Mac OS X Utilities menu, run Terminal (from Utilities in the menu bar) instead. Inside the Terminal window, give it the following command, and then press the Return key:
diskutil list
Please include in your reply the output from that command.

I also have been experiencing some problems after running Software Update (Security update + Java) a couple of days ago. Similarly to Jandaf (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9000023) I have only the gray start up screen + Apple logo + gear wheel constantly rotating. Based on the information provided in this forum I have tried some procedures which didn't solved my problem so far. Below I describe I have tried:
1) I have booted using the installation DVD and run the disk utility. When performing the First Aid/Verify Disk I found some errors ('Invalid node structure'). But I couldn't fix the problem using disk repair (same problem 'Invalid node structure' 'Volume check failed'.
2) I also tried to boot in single user mode (command + s) to run fsck -fy. It didn't work. I got the following message (last 4 lines):
CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: -s
CSRHIDTTransitionDriver::probe: booting in single user .. do not match
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCKeyboard" has no kernel dependency.
Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBTCEventDriver" has no kernel dependency.
3) When trying to boot in safe mode. I got a grey screen with the following message:
'You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button".
4) I also tried to 'Archieve & Instal'. Again no success. After reading the DVD the action is terminated because some errors (does not specify).
5) I also tried the 'German Medicine' (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8728797#8728797) (i.e. Connect the 'problematic MacBook' to my old G4 via firewire and reinstall the 2009-001 update). Again no success. The G4 cannot mount the MacBook hardrive.
I don't know what to do any more.
A) Can I resuscitate my old system? If yes how?
B) If not, can I at least save the data I have in my old HD?
C) Is it possible to format and reinstall the OS or is this this computer doomed?

Due to my lack of knowledge I can't judge how bad this is. But I can tell you that every time I read the word bad in the log it scares the s*** out me.

Presario sr1820nx will not boot, fans work, get one beep every 3 seconds.

Was working on computer for a while. Shut down and after about an hour moved system to different room. Got nothing. Cleaned system, was dirty, shame on me, and replaced power supply with a 550w from a 300w. All fans work now but get nothing on screen and one beep every three seconds. any way to isolate my problem without taking it in. Waranty long gone.

Try reseating the memory sticks.If no joy try booting with only 1 if you have 2, switching them if no luck with first.

Thanks, but since iTunes will not boot, I cannot run that iTunes diagnostic. Just need to know how to reinstall iTunes (Windows XP). Do I need to remove the existing non working version of iTunes, or can I just install iTunes from Apple like I was a new user?

after much head scratching I ran the hardware test disk from cd. The test showed a memory issue I eliminated the faulty one systematically. So it wasn't a hard drive or software problem in the end it was faulty memory. What was misleading was the computer telling me there was a fault on the hard drive. The machine works fine now. Thanks to people's comments I learned a bit more about the G5 that helped eliminate probable causes

What lead_org is referring to is commonly known as "re-balling" which involves unsoldering the Southbridge chip from the planar, replacing all (6-700) solder balls with new ones and then re-attaching it under heat/pressure.

if you connect an external screen does anything appears?

Computer will not boot up but fan will turn on and stay on.

I have a Gateway and I did not have enough memory. I bought 1Gig to give it enough memory to run the basic systems. I added the memory to the slot in the hard drive and now it will not boot up. The fan just turns on and runs. I took out the new memory and it does the same thing. No working computer. Need help on what I should do besides Punt.

First and foremost, recheck all internal connections to make sure you didn't bump something loose while replacing the RAM. I had the exact same thing happen to me once before only to find that I had accidentally loosened the cable to the hard drive.

Do you get a boot tone (chime) when you power up?
If it does, try a safe boot by powering with the shift key held down.
If it doesn't, you have a fundamental problem to deal with. Are any LEDs on the logic board illuminated after you power up?

Try DFU Mode Restore. Open iTunes on computer, connect iPhone to computer. Hold both Home and Power buttons for exactly 10 seconds, release Power button, keep holding Home button until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode. Usually about 20 seconds time. Restore iPhone Firmware.
