PM8M-V, SATA, ...RAID. Please Help.

Let me start this off by saying I don’t know much about SATA or RAID but that is why I am making this PC. I recently purchased a PM8M-V motherboard and can’t seem to get the SATA drives to be seen. I have 2 Maxtor MaxLine Plus II SATA150 250GB drives (kinda confused about the power connector(s) as well). After much reading I THINK I want to go with a software RAID1 setup (C = 50GB / D = 200GB) if that is possible. RAID or not, I still need the drives to bee seen. I’ve been reading everything I can find for a week now and have nothing so far. I’d be interested in knowing what all of the other choices in the BIOS boot sequence mean, and when & how to use the floppy disk in the package, among other things not covered in the literature. My last PC was made when dinosaurs still roamed the earth and now I’m playing catch-up. Anyway, I want to use Windows 2000 (NTFS). I have an SP3 and an SP4 disk. I remember reading somewhere that I needed SP4 either for RAID or partition size or something to that effect (I don’t remember). Other details about my system: P4 3.4GHz HT, Kingston 1GB DDR (2x 512MB stick), 400W PSU, 1 Asus 52x E-IDE CD-ROM (eventually want 2 cd-roms). I really need some help here.

If my RAID-0 is successful shouldn't C: show as 100GB? I'm so lost.
The Driver CD is not just only for my motheboard?    What a genius way to save money!    and cause problems.

  • Anyone using sata_promise w/ SATA drives, please help.

A recently submitted a kernel patch to ensure that PATA ports are detected on Promise FastTrak controllers with both PATA and SATA ports. I have no way of testing SATA drives with this patch. Could someone using one of these controllers with SATA drives please patch a kernel and see if everything is still good?
    Bug Report #4770

I'm using sata_promise with a SATA HD. Unfortunately, since Linux 2.6.17 it doesn't want to boot anymore (kernel oops on startup). For now I am using  2.6.15-archck which I still had lying around fortunately, though 2.6.16 also worked for me.
Do you by any chance know about this problem? According to linux changes, this has happened to the promise driver:
    * Add support for the Promise Fasttrak TX4300/TX4310 4-port PCI SATA controllers based on the PDC40719 chip to sata_promise driver (commit)
But that was actually a very minor patch, I guess some other promise/sata related change broke it.

  • MS-6741 sata setup PLEASE HELP!

    Hello:
I have a MS-6741 board that I am trying to setup with 2 WD 1200 sata drives.
(This is my first experience with sata drives) I am trying to do a Raid 1 setup.
I can't even get to square one with this!
Problem:  When I plug in the cable from the drive to the MB the drive will NOT power up.
If I remove the MB cable from the drive, it power up's OK.  It will do the same thing with the second drive.
I am guessing it's not the drives because they both do the same thing.
Any help SURE would be appreciated.
      Tks.

I talked to a Tech guy at MSI.
He said the WD 120 drives I was using MUST have the jumpers on because of a problem
with using the drives with the MSI board I am using.
I put the (Drive) jumpers on and everything is OK.
It's all easy when you know how
    Thanks for you help

  • Dv7t-3000 - Sata or Sata 2 - Please help explain what this has!

I assumed that Sata 2 being mainstream for so long, this new laptop of mine would have it.
I want to buy one of the nicer SSD for this unit, but I can NOT confirm anywhere that it will run up to 300 megs.
If it's Sata 1 then I wouldn't be getting much performance gain from a SSD as this 7200RPM HDD rates up to 100 megs.
I contacted HP Support and got told that my laptop only has Sata 1.
I find this impossible to believe.  Why in the world would HP do that?  I read in a post on the forums that this laptop
falls into the top 5% for overall performance for laptops.  How is that so unless it has sata 2?  Why would they
have old Sata 1 in such new technology?
Can anyone confirm if HP Support is correct?  I have the guy second guessing himself right now and he asked for serial number to try and find documentation to support his claim.  I may have to RMA this beast and start searching for a laptop that has SATA II because that is the main reason I wanted a laptop!  For the SSD to WOW me!
Thanks in advance for your thoughts, input, and effort you may put into this!
    WWW2000
    UPDATE:
Otay.  Now I understand why all the reviews out there say what they say about HP support.  Makes you feel like you carried your new puppy into an auto garage to learn about it.  WRONG people, wrong place!
Can anyone who knows english and knows about computers please tell me why the ...  why HP would be retarded and put Sata 1 in this killer laptop?  Do they really enjoy upsetting their customers?  All I kept getting for that supervisior was "you computer customized and you hard drive you choose sata 1"
I bought it directly from HP.com so I could have everything in it that you may not get from a retail store.  She couldn't seem to grasp that nowhere on hp.com does it let you know if you get sata 1 or sata 2.   Option not offered and it SHOULDN'T be.  It should automatically be sata 2!  Sata one was like so 1998!
Sorry for being so upset.  I just want a killer SSD to make this beast all it should be and HP is telling me it's not going to happen.  Do I need to start an RMA?  Or can someone confirm that I can get read speeds of 230 from that SSD I want?

    Hi,
Many owners(those who can afford it) of the dv7t series are putting OCZ agility and vertex drives in to replace their SATA hard disk.
I have no doubt that the speed of the SSD disk will wow you even if it isn't SATA2. Think about restart times of 58 seconds!

  • Huge Issues opening projects from eSATA External RAID-Please Help!

Hi peeps.  I'm hoping you guys have some insight into my issue here.  I thought I get further talking with you rather than trying Dell again.  Here's my system specs in brief....
    Dell Studio XPS 9100
    Intel i7-960 3.2Ghz
    18Gb DDR3 SDRAM 1333Mhz
Radeon HD 5870 1GB (until I can afford Quadro, but has no bearing on issue)
    Windows 7 Pro 64bit - all updated
Venus DS3R Pro External RAID enclosure w/ 2x500Gb WD 7200rpm Drives in RAID 0 Config (forget exact models and am writing this not from edit system but from my internet-connected system)
Running CS5 Master Collection - all updates installed as of writing.
Ok, so here's my issue.  Shortly after getting new system (above) and installing newly-purchased CS5 I had to work on one new project and make client-requested changes to an old project.  Issue has been the same for both.  When my external RAID was connected via eSATA, Premiere would take forever (and I mean forever) to load assets, would often (6 times out of 10) crash or hang-up system so badly as to require hard reset.  Those times when I finally got the timeline up, playback was horribly choppy on both HD 720p (new project) and SD (old project).  If any files needed conforming, Premiere would take (literally) hours and hours to perform task, and trying to export anything to DVD, blu-ray or encodes to files I would get multiple render issues or complete failures.
I was tearing my hair out until I finally remembered that Venus enclosure also has USB (2.0) out.  Hooked this up and all problems went away.  Projects loading correctly and quickly and playback is what I would expect from USB and software-only playback (as I mentioned above, am running Radeon card that came with system until I can afford NVidia option)
One strange thing is that After Effects was performing fine when drive was connected via eSATA (although the projects were very simple - I will test on complex project from archive).
My question is - do you guys agree with me that it's some kind of SATA driver issue?  Or is there something going on in Premiere of which I'm unaware?  I called Dell support and they helpfully informed me that "all my BIOS and chipware drivers are up to date but that I should rest assured that my complete satisfaction is their primary concern".  Thanks Dell...you want to come finish my edit for me then?
Anyway...what do we think?  Thinking of installing an eSATA card into a free slot - good idea?
Any help would be much appreciated - would like to get back onto eSATA thruput ASAP, esp. after I get Quadro card - prob next month.
Thanks in advance for your time!

Did this external enclosure ever work well with its eSATA connection? I doubt highly that this is a Premiere issue--as far as the program is concerned, it's blind to the nature of the storage medium you're using. Rather, I'd suspect a faulty or low-quality RAID or SATA controller in the enclosure. I've had issues before with "bargain" enclosures that either wouldn't connect over a certain interface, or were so sporadic and slipshod that I just pulled the drive out of the enclosure and used it bare.
If the enclosure worked well before, I would look at the eSATA connection on your computer as the issue. You might circumvent the Dell drivers site/advice and go hunting for your own from the OEMs.

  • FCP and G-TECH RAID - PLEASE HELP

    Hi;
I have looked at the manual and searched this on discussion topics but I can't figure this out. I have a 1TB G-TECH RAID and I would like to use this as my scratch disk for FCP. but for some reason the volume only comes up as readable. I have tried to add and delete files from it with no success.
    Can anyone help? thanks

I ended up restoring the hard drive and erasing everything using disk utility and started from scratch.
I am trying to capture DVCPRO 50 footage using a panasonic deck via firewire. I have set up FCP in DV50 and my capture preset is set to DV50 and the external hard drive has been set as the scratch disk.
I have no problem writing to the disk now, but for some reason I don't just get one file when I import a clip. in comes in as "File Name -av" and I have about 7 of those files. none of the seven files open but when I sent them to the trash the "main file" failed to open.
How can I change it so that I will just get one DV50 quicktime file for everytime I capture a block of footage?
    thanks again.

  • SATA Problem please Help?

Can anyone help? I started my mac pro this afternoon, and one of my SATA Drives isn't showing itself on my desktop with the others!! I swapped bays with the other drive and it still only shows one. Any Ideas?

Since I got my MacPro I have used or tried six different HDs in it and one (only) of them is prone to not showing up (early Maxline lll 300 gb).
This has only happened just after I have moved it, and it has sometimes taken a reboot or three to show up. Once it does show up in its new position it is always OK thereafter.
One time I tried resetting the PRAM (restart holding down appleoption+PR till after the second chime). Can't remember now whether this actually fixed it but it would be worth trying, if nothing else is working. Or try booting into safe mode (restart holding down shift key).
Wasn't clear from your post if the drive not showing up was previuosly mounting OK and now isn't, or whether it is new and has never shown up.

  • 915P Combo No Raid option please help

    Hi everyone,
Recently I bought MSI 915P combo FR and 2 S-ATA HD and 1 ATA HD.
I want to use the two S-ATA HD as Raid but BIOS does not let me select the raid option under IDE/S-ATA configuration. I have tried to clear CMOS and use different BIOS version and checked all connection but nothing helps.
Any help, advice and suggestion is very welcomed

    Hi Darkslayer,
It is written at least on the pack that it does support both SATA and IDE RAID and the chip is ICH6 and ICH6R ready.
I have follow the instruct mentioned but I do not see the RAID option anymore since updating the BIOS
BTW, maybe u should call up ur local MSI distributor and ask the what the ICH6R ready mean. I wish to know as well

I got rid of them got 2 new 850 evo 250 gb same problem. please help me i am so desparate i am willing to pay woth body organs for help

    I..have a few questions...
    1. You set BIOS to the RAID mode, and under that option there's a Board SATA RAID ROM, do you set it as Legacy ROM?
    2. Did you enter Ctrl+F to initialize the drives/Delete Array(If they're used SSDs) and create RAID0?
    3. Is your Win7 64 bit or 32 bit?
    4. I assume it's 64 bit, did you copy the W764 folder for driver loading?
And make sure you get the driver from here:

  • 975X Platinum PowerUp 2*SATA/RAID and 1*IDE CDROM configuration help

I have latest official BIOS version 7.3
I’m trying to setting up the bios to handle 2 SATA harddisk in RADI 0+1. Furthermore I have IDE CDROM connected to the IDE1.
I have no problem setting up the 2 SATA harddisk as RAID 0+1 and it works perfect.
Unfortunately I don’t know how to setup the bios to make the IDE CDROM drive visible in windows.
    Please help?
(I have tried to enable the JMicron, but then I can’t boot, because the mainboard loses the RAID controller. I have read that this has been a problem with BIOS version 7.2 and 7.3)

  • Help! getting k8MM-V SATA RAID to allow Mode 0 (stripping)

    Greetings all!
    Help!
I can't get my motherboard's SATA utility to show RAID mode 0 (stripping)!
I only get choices for "Auto for security" and "RAID 1 (Mirror)."
I'm using the G72-VASA052 VIA SATA RAID Driver for VT6410/VT6420/VT8237 disk that came with the motherboard (I use this when I hit F6 for special drivers at Windows installation).
    System:
    K8MM-V motherboard
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+
    1 GB PC3200 (DDR400) SuperTalent ram (in 2 512 MB pieces)
    2 Western-Digital 120 SATA drives (currently mirrored) :(
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 (AGP)
I even ran the RAID MSI tool and the buttons for SPAN are greyed-out.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated...
Please post here or e-mail me at [email protected]
    Thanks in advance,

Thanks AGAIN for your help with this...
Yes, the manual is great for the physical things on this mobo... jumpers and pins... but it SUCKS for anything relating to the RAID controller.  There is even a typo in the language of the RAID bios! It says that when creating a new raid, all data will be :"destriod" - bad translation, I guess.
You are saying that having existing partitions on one or more of the disks will PREVENT the SATA Raid bios from being able to choose RAID level 0?
I do remember that when I only had 1 WD 120 GB SATA drive that RAID was unavailable (requiring at least 2 disks).  I got the second identical drive SPECIFICALLY to add in to create a RAID 0.
When I created my current RAID, the bios told me that everything on the disks would be destroyed.
How sure are you that existing partitions will prevent RAID level 0 from being shown as an option?
I ask because I will have to reload ALL my software to test this and do not want to do this unless you are SURE about your suggestion...
Thanks again, and I look forward to your reply.
    Kind regards,

  • Please help me get RAID 1 working on FM2-A75MA-E35

I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong.
Not trying to use EFI. Not even sure why I'd want to.
I have two identical SSD's and I want to mirror them.
    The motherboard recognizes them fine.
    I go into settings/advanced/intergrated peripherals
I set "SATA Mode" to "RAID Mode"
I set "Board SATA RAID Mode: to "Legacy ROM"
    I save and reboot
Hit Ctrl-F to get into SATA raid utility:
View Drive Assignments shows both SSD's (also shows my optical drive)
LD View/LD Define menu shows no LD's
    I hit Ctrl-C to define
Change RAID mode from 0 to 1
Initialization:Fast Gigabyte Boundary: On Sector Size:512B Read Policy:Read Ahead Write Policy:Write Back
Change the assignment for both drives from N to Y
    Ctrl-Y to Save
    Ctrl-Y again to name: "Sys"
Warning about reinitializing the MBR, CTRL-Y to continue
Pops up in LD View Menu and shows LD 1 set up in RAID 1 DRV 2 Capacity(GB) 126.99 Status Functional
Pretty straightforward. Should oughta work, right?
Well, upon doing this, and exiting the Raid setup utility, it goes back through POST, shows the screen that (if you read fast) shows my RAID array, shows the BIOS screen message, and then the screen goes black and there's a blinking cursor in the upper left and it's hung.
I can hit F11 during the BIOS screen and get to the boot menu. Doesn't matter what I tell it to boot to, whether I tell it the CD or the USB stick, same result, the screen goes black, blinking cursor in the upper left, and we're hung. I've completely lost my ability to get it to boot to anything.
When I'm not in RAID mode, everything is fine (well sorta) ... I can boot to the CD or USB stick, I can install Windoze 7 onto a drive, I can boot to that drive, etc. I say "sorta" because it seems there's a couple of bugs. The boot order doesn't seem to work, I've got to hit F11 if I want it to boot to something other than the hard drive, and what's more, if I set anything to UEFI, I end up booting into the EFI shell and even after changing the setting back I can never get it to boot again until I clear the CMOS. So there appears to be some BIOS bugs, but hey, at least I can work around them.
But I NEED Raid 1! Critical data that's changing constantly throughout the workday. I need to mirror the drives. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks

Well, I appreciate the response, but you kind of missed the core of the problem: Once the board is put into RAID mode, you lose your ability to boot to ANYTHING. You get a black screen with a blinking cursor. You can't boot to a CD or thumb drive to even install windows at that point. You're dead in the water. So it's got nothing to do with the drivers or anything like that, it's a BIOS issue.
Anyway, I got no response here, and I got no response from the support department either, and I was ready to send it back when in desperation I sent an email to the reviews department, the folks who respond to reviews on Newegg and the like (they post their email address in those responses). Voila, instant help, accurate information, and I got it going.
I'm a little bit annoyed with myself because I should have known better than to believe their "Live Updater" utility when it told me my V2.1 BIOS was the latest. An update to 2.2 as suggest by the reviews department solved the issue and RAID started working. Moral of the story, don't believe Live Updater. Go to the web site and check for yourself.
One other note, along the same lines. The printed manual that comes with the board has no description of configuring RAID at all. I went to the web site to get a newer manual to check it, but saw the manual was version 1.0. So I concluded there's only one version. Stupid stupid stupid! The version online is newer than the printed one and has a description. I figured this out myself but it took me a bit. Again, moral of the story, look deeper than what they're telling you on the surface. Live and learn.
The board actually works quite well now and I'm happy.

RAID offers many advantages over the use of single hard disks, but it is clearly not for everyone. The potential for increased capacity, performance and reliability are attractive, but they come with real costs. Nothing in life is free. In this section I take an overview look at RAID, to help explain its benefits, costs, tradeoffs and limitations. This should give you a better idea if RAID is for you, and help you to understand what RAID can do--and what it can't do.
As you read on, it's essential to keep in mind that with RAID, it's definitely the case that "the devil is in the details". Most common blanket statements made about RAID like "RAID improves availability" or "RAID is for companies that need fast database service" or "RAID level 5 is better than RAID level 0" are only true at best part of the time. In almost every case, it depends. Usually, what RAID is and what it does for you depends on what type you choose and how you implement and manage it. For example, for some applications RAID 5 is better than RAID 0; for others, RAID 0 is vastly superior to RAID 5! There are situations where a RAID design, hardware and software that would normally result in high reliability could result instead in disaster if they are not properly controlled.

  • K7n2 Delta RAID Setup ----PLEASE HELP

Can someone explain how a RAID - Striping should be setup on this MOBO?  I can not get the board to see the 2nd drive. I have duplicate Maxtor 40gb drives and it will only see one of the drives. I am using IDE3 for one of the drives and then putting the other drive on IDE1. The manual states that you can only have 1 HD on IDE3 thus the reason for setting it up this way.  I have also tried the 2 maxtor drives on IDE1 with another drive on IDE3 (dummy RAID) hoping that this config would work as well, but it did not!
    Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

It does support RAID. I have been able to go into the Fastrack utility and setup a RAID consisting of one drive. The manual also states that all IDE slots support RAID. It has the promise 376 chip.

  • SATA Raid K8N nforce3 BSOD HELP!

    Hey.
I have spend 20+ hours trying to get my K8N Neo2 to work with SATA RAID 0, but no matter what I do I still get the BSOD on every boot.  My setup:
    MSI K8N Neo2
    AMD64 3500 939
    2xWD SATA Raptor 36GB 10000RPM on SATA 3&4
    2x512MB PC3200 DDR400 Samsung ram
    AOpen 300W PSU
Now I have tried to exchange ram, powersupply, and even the motherboard (tried diffferent brand same shitty chipset) so it's either the CPU or the nvidia raid drivers that are totally buggy!  I have seen other threads describing similar problems, and I have followed all theirs suggestions aka this one
Neo2 Plat Raid 0; windows driver
still without success...  This should work out of the box any suggestions???  Maybe  it will work without raid, but I am not convinced
    Thanks!

Yes, I did.  I tried with the supplied floppy from MSI and with the newest taken from the nforce v. 5.10 on floppy too.   I thought about installing without raid then installing the nforce drivers.  install new harddisks setup in raid and then copy the windows partion using ghost to the raid disks...  But all these workarounds shouldn't be necessary.
I have also tried installing a modded bios from syar with raid rom v.4.66 still same result. K8N Neo and Neo2 Bios Collection. *Updated official 1.5 bios for 7030 Neo1*
I appreciate your help.  It's driving me nuts.
