PMG5 says jump drive empty.

I hope this is the right place to post.
I usually put documents from work(on pc) to home on a removable 256mb drive. I had allot of info to move this time so I put the word docs in folders and my mac says the drive is empty. it does show that there is memory missing 185mb out of 256 but no flolders are showing. This has never happened before but I have never placed anything in folders before(usually just word docs) what can I do if anything???

ok it worked...but now I have a question.....I used finder and found a doc. at the very bottom of the finder window it showed my drive and then the folders on down to the doc I did the search for.
The funny thing is the removable disk is called my stuff. the very next folder is labled trashes????
Why when I open the drive when it mounts does it appear empty but when I search I can find my missing docs????
Thanks for your help

My mac air says hard drive full and 90% is full of 'other' which I cant work out what 'other' is as i Have transferred most to my external hard drive.
Do you know how I can tell how large each file is taking up and what my 'other' category could be?
    thanks

Initial easy steps to gain disk space:
    - Delete all files in the Downloads folder.
      Empty the Trash.
    - Start iPhoto.
      Empty its trash.
      Restart.
    Backup:
Run a Time Machine (or other) backup since you are about to delete and move files and you may need to recover from any inadvertent mistakes or decisions.  You will need one external hard drive for your Time Machine (or other) backup and a second if you plan to offload some files.  (See suggestions for where to purchase hard drives at the end of this message.)

Methodology to protect your data.  Backups vs. Archives.  Long-term data protection:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6031
    Deleting files:
Then use the free application OmniDiskSweeper http://www.omnigroup.com/more to explore your volume in descending order by size so you can attack the problem from the top down, deleting the largest unwanted files first.  Delete with caution and do not delete any system files.  Remember to empty the trash after trashing the files.
Additional reference on freeing disk space:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html
    Offloading files:
Consider moving some of the no-often-used large files or directories to an external disk.  Use ODS again to find them.  This will be at least your second hard drive.  Your first one(s) is/are for your Time Machine (or other) backup(s).  Do not offload files onto a Time Machine disk.
Format the second drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled).  Using OWS to find large files/folders and copy them from the system drive to the external hard drive and delete them from your internal drive.
Then  > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.
Now both your system disk and your external offload disk will be backed up onto your Time Machine disk.

  • Distinguishing two jump drives?

I have learned, from recent unpleasant experience with nonreturnable wireless peripherals, to ask questions BEFORE I buy anything new.
I am considering buying a second jump drive, for easy and frequent backup of text files. (I am a writer and loathe the idea of losing work, so I not only Save frequently, but drag-and-drop my word files to a jump drive several times a day.)
Currently, my single jump drive appears as an icon ("Lexar") on my screen. What will happen if I add another jump drive, for extra backup? Will my OS automatically label it Lexar 2 or something of that order so that I can readily distinguish them? Or will the OS become confused?
In general, are there any pitfalls I should be aware of before buying one or more additional jump drives? Long-term, I intend to rotate them, keeping at least one in another location, in case of fire destroying my computer and the attached jump drive.
(Despite unpleasant experiences with a local Mac store, I LOVE my Mac mini system and I love being back in the Apple world again.)

hi. Welcome to the boards. OS X is a little more forgiving them Windows. If you have a Jump Drive called Lexar and it's on your Desktop, once you plug in another Jump Drive that's identical, it will also say Lexar and appear on your desktop.
From there, you can change the name and you can even change the icon to make it even more personalized.
    To change icons:
To select the icon you wish to use:
    1) Click on the icon you wish to use
    2) At the menu bar click Edit – Copy
To change the old icon to the new icon:
    1) Click on the icon for the application you wish to change
    2) Click on Finder – File – Get Info
    3) In the Get Info window, click on the icon you wish to change (Top left corner)
    4) At the menu bar, click - Edit – Paste

  • How do I scan jump drive for virus on a Mac Pro?

How do I scan a jump drive for a virus on a Macbook Pro?

    Kat52 wrote:
Does a new Macbook Pro come with a virus program?
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple. Robust anti-virus and anti-malware protections have been integrated in OS X since its inception, and have only improved in the many years since then. Mavericks represents the beneficiary of all that experience. There is no separate program to install, but there are features you can use and practices you can observe to customize or augment those protections:
OS X Mavericks: Protect your Mac
OS X Mavericks: Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mavericks: Keep your information safe
    OS X About Gatekeeper
About file quarantine in OS X
If you install Windows on your Mac using Boot Camp or virtualization software, Windows requires its own anti-virus measures. That's nothing new.
The following principles are intended specifically for OS X but can be adapted for any operating system or device.
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Jump drive won't work-appears as a CD

I have 4 gb san disk titanium jump drive. When I try to use it with the MacBook, it shows up as a CD. I can't see the other folders it has, just three programs for U3.
Is there a way to get this working?
Do I need some updated drivers?
Do I need to erase/disable U3 on the drive?
    Any ideas? Thanks!

I usually have no use for these Jump Drives in their CD mode. I use them for storage only and if they function as a small external drives to which I can read and write to then I am fine.
Having said that, what I normally do is simply format them and combine all partitions into one using Disk Utility. Not saying that you should do this but that solved my concerns when I run into a jump drive that behaves like a CD.

#2 disk (looks similar to this Lexar™ JumpDrive® TwistTurn USB Flash Drive, 16GB but it doesn't show up on my desktop when inserted in either machine, even when attempting to scan with disk utilities
I don't know what to do. I need very detailed instructions to fix this problem with simple language.
    Thanks

I would disagree with calling Lexar "very junky" given that their camera cards are very good quality, but what is true about USB flash drives in general is that they use a much lower grade of memory chip than you have in SSDs or in RAM.
It is not obvious why those flash drives are failing. Sorry if we can't easily identify a cause, but the plain fact is that thousands (millions?) of Mac users, including myself, use USB flash drives of all types and they simply do not fail that often. Something odd is going on there that is not happening on most Macs, but it's not easy to figure out what.
Oh, one more thing. When you paste a link from a web site, you usually don't need to paste in what's after the question mark. The part before is usually unique enough to reach the correct product page. The gibberish part after usually consists of various trackers, referrers, and markers for your session.

  • I have lost all of my bookmarks from the drop-down menu. It says it is empty, but never have I deleted them. And when I bookmark a page it does not save it. Please help

    Question
I have lost all of my bookmarks from the drop-down menu. It says it is empty, but never have I deleted them. And when I bookmark a page it does not save it. Please help

    Ok this is bizzare!
Thank you for your response, I went throught each and every step without any luck, even got the recovery programme, and painstakingly tried to sift through all that mumbojumbo to find what i needed. finally found the bookmark bit, but it had been fully overwritten :(, so on reading about previous ff versions, found the sqlite thingys, and they were relatively unscathed(partly written over, but saveable apparently TG), saved them to adiff drive, amongst other possibly good folders. Then looked up how to install them, and it said to close FF, and install to profile folder.
So i tried to close FF, and the original problem from a few days ago, where it asked me if 'i was sure i wanted to close this window as it has X tabs open', popped up again. This is where 'open blank page' selection was set, over 'open previous tabs'. Wanting to save that info on how to sort out these friggin files, I reset the Option to 'open previous tabs', and closed FF. After unsucessfully searching for the profile folder on my laptop, i opened FF intending to search online for where i could find said folder.
AND BANG, surprise surprise, the FF I had just closed with only tabs open about finding out what the heck to do, had disappeared, and instead my original saved tabs were up, and my bookmarks are there..... I am gobsmacked! what the heck just happened there???
I have made 3 back up in different folders now, of those friggin bookmarks. I am weary now tho of shutting it all down.... what if its back to the other pages I had with no bookmarks, tomorrow :(

  • Jump Drive Issue

Hello, I have a HP 8 GB Jump Drive (model # v220w) that is not longer showing up in "My Coumpter" when inserted into a USB port. I have gone into Disk Manager on 3 different computers and it is as if my jump drive does not exist. I get the plugged in sound when I do insert it into the port, but nothing shows up. I am an Engineering student and not all of my files were back up onto my Desktop. These files are very important for me to access for my classes, and any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Additional info. After restarting firefox and my computer, I was finally able to get to recognize the device, but now when I upload the file, it says file error and does not properly attach it. Ideas?

  • Jump drive question

I got a freebie jump drive (key chain drive) at a vendor lunch yesterday. No documentation except a slip of paper saying it works with current Windows versions and Mac OS X (no version listed). When I plug the drive in a USB port on my iMac, nothing happens. If I go to "About this Mac" I can see that the drive is occupying a port - and the Mac can read enough of the drive to list the serial number - but I can find no way to access the documents on that drive. It doesn't show up on the Desktop (like an iPod does) and it doesn't show up under Computer (only thing there is Mac HD and Network). Any suggestions?

  • Will not recognize jump drive nor allow me to open DVD tray

Intermittantly, my G5 will not show my jump drive nor a CD on the desktop. At those times, it will not open the DVD tray either.
When this happens, I can go to system profiler and see both the jump drive and the CD--it's just not showing up on the desktop so I can't open them. The only way I can get the tray to open and to recognize the CD and or Jump Drive is to reboot the computer.
What is going on and why don't these show up on the desktop nor allow me to open the DVD tray.

  • I want to download Firefox 17 to a jump drive on a Windows machine and install it on my Mac. Can I do this?

I live in Mountain View and use Google WiFi which is provided by Google for the City of Mountain View. For the past few months, they have been having a BIG problem with the corruption of downloads. Even teensy tiny ones. Perhaps you've heard about it since you're also in Mountain View. They have not responded to repeated posts from the forum... I have an iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and I haven't been able to update my software. I go to Lane Medical Library at Stanford to use the Windows machines there. I load whatever standalone software that I can onto a jump drive and install it at home. Unfortunately, some sites (like Apple and maybe even Mozilla!) recognize the computer you're on and only allow you to download software compatible with the machine that you are actually sitting at. This means that I can't reinstall Safari because I can't get a copy of it. And it looks like I might not be able to install Firefox 17.0 either. At least, that's what I'm trying to find out. "We've made some educated guesses about your current browser and operating system." See what I mean? So when I go to the library, will I be able to download a copy of Firefox 17.0 for the Mac and install it on my computer at home? Thanks!
