PMS Color won't delete.

http://indesignsecrets.com/color-swatches-that-wont-delete.php
At the last second, we are printing digitally, so I went into the ID CS4 document (Mac OSX 10.5.8) and I can not delete the PMS swatch so I can replace it with a CMYK. I tried the things on the post above (excluding that codeing thing which I am not about to attempt). Anyone know why. My only workaround was to cut and paste everything into a new document. But I do not like the idea of that at all. The new doc has different margins, guides, preferences. I will be able to get by on this bandaid but moving forward, this can be a bigger issue. Any ideas? Please do not reply if you havent read the above post. Thanks in advance.

It's not a corrupt document. There is a condition within Quark and In Design whereas someone has tried to remap spot colors in a native document, but the color still remains active in a linked placed image.  What you need to do is find the linked file and change the name of the spot color to something else. If you have an object in the page layout that is designated that mystery spot color, you are currently in a feed back color loop and this is why you can not delete it.  Again, you need to change the spot color name in the link.  If the placed file is a nested EPS and that EPS has an embeded object that has the spot color, your only choice is to create a new layout document, locate the bad linked file and dig it out manually.
Good Luck.

  • Deleting unused PMS color

I  can't seem to get rid of a PMS color. I've tried exporting the document to IDML and opening it, selecting all Unused colors and deleting, going through all of the styles to make sure it's not in there, checking all imported graphics to make sure it's not in there— nothing gets rid of the PMS color.

    Hi,
could you inform us, on which version of InDesign you are using?
With which version was this document created initially?
I ask, because I remember an issue, but very long ago, which did not allow to delete spot colors, even if the document was empty. But this should not be an issue with versions later than CS3.
If the spot color was imported by some kind of EPS or PDF files, you are not able to delete it in the document, nor to do so in the EPS or PDF file unless you have Illustrator and these files were created in Illustrator. (Or you have Freehand and these files were created in Freehand, same with other drawing applications.) Opening these kind in a different editor might cause damage.
In these circumstances you could use the ink manager (you find it in the Swatch Panel Menu) and target the spot colors, all or some selected, to process color or to a different spot color.

Years ago, Pantone made a product called ColorWeb Pro that
had software and also a fan of ink samples and Pantone's
recommendations for CMYK and RGB (Web) values that would be the
best representation for each ink. For the Web, they'd researched
the ink colors and tried to account for variations in graphics
card, monitor, and printer hardware. Because of that variation,
there's really no hard and fast conversion you can use. (Plus, the
RGB colors that are best for the Web won't be the same as the CMYK
colors that are best for print.)
Pantone has a number of current products for color matching.
You might be better off contacting them and getting advice on what
product would work best for you.

For a metallic color, you might want to use a subtle gradient
to simulate a reflective effect, though.

  • Cannot find the new pms colors Pantone + solid coated

I have a Pantone + Solid coated book that has 336 new colors in the back. Specifically pms 2028 C. The problem is when I try to find it in the PMS charts in Illi CS6 or PS CS6, those 336 new colors are not in my Pantone + Solid coated charts. I ran the adobe updates and it updated what it needed but I'm still unable to find it. Am I looking in the wrong chart? The name matches that of my PMS book so it just doesn't make sense. I scroll through the Illi chart and also try to use the "find" section. Any help is greatly appriciated. thanks Kyle

PMS 2028 (and the list you describe) are not in the current Pantone lists in Illustrator CC (or earlier AI versions).
But you can make a spot color of your own choosing, and call it whatever you want (such as Pantone 2028). You may need to fake or guess on the actual color (in RGB or CMYK), but if you're separating for an actual (non-digital) printing press, your faked color won't make any difference, as the proper ink formulation for your spot color is what actually goes on the paper when it is printed.
If you're not separating for a traditional printing press, then what is the point of needing a specific Pantone color? Other than being used for ink formulations on a (non-digital) printing press, Pantone is an old, useless model, attempting to extend its relevance beyond the pull-date by forming software alliances with such as Adobe, etc.
For non-traditional printing, rather, develop the colors you want according to your specific output device, be it a photo printer, CMYK digital press, etc. -- If you really "like" PMS 2028, then develop that color (probably in RGB/HSB) for your specific output device.
Lastly, if you are printing to an actual printing press, and also need the 2028 color in your pre-press (digital) proofs, then you will need to develop it for your proofer (your specific non-press output device), probably with the caveat to your client that it is a color "approximation." Then use any spot color (titled, "Pantone 2028") for separations, as the actual ink will provde accurate color.

  • PMS-colored .ai-file becomes process

I have two separate InDesign CS5-documents that have the same Illustrator CS5 .ai-file placed in them. One of the documents honors the PMS color but the other one turns it to process color. I´ve heard there might be trouble with .ai-files so I saved it to eps but with the same result. I guess it´s got to have something to do with InDesign basic color presets but I can´t see that they are different in the two documents. Where´s the catch?

Do you have an identically named process color in your InDesign file? If so, delete it or rename it.

repair permissions/verify but it doesnt change

can be repaired, but it wont let me.
You can't Repair the disk the system is currently running the OS from - That's why you have to boot from the Installer disk (or some other start-up disk). Repair Disk addresses directory structure issues - totally separate from what Repair Permissions does.

  • ITunes under Vista won't delete my songs

    Hey guys.
I've recently updated to Windows Vista, and I'm running iTunes 7.3 with an iPod Nano.
Previously on my XP machine (with some ancient iTunes, 7.1 maybe?) I was able to select a track in my library, and either hit the Delete key or right-click and select the Delete option. This would spawn a dialogue - do I want to keep the files, or move to recycle bin (or cancel)?
Now under iTunes, when I delete a file, that dialogue is not there anymore, and deleting a file only removes it from the library view, rather than from my hard drive.
As an added piece of information, I was able to upgrade a purchased song to iTunes Plus. When you do this, there's a dialogue of similar nature offering to move the old file to the recycle bin or to keep it. This dialogue appears, but when selecting recycle it does no such thing
It's worth noting that all my music is in my iTunes Music folder, not anywhere else. I understand there can be a problem where if your music is not stored with iTunes, it won't delete the files. I don't believe this applies to my situation.
I only really noticed this by happenstance, and now I have my music collection full of tracks I don't want anymore, but no effective way of getting them back in. Why is this?
Well, that's peculiar thing #2. Previously I used to be able to just re-add my iTunes music folder, and iTunes would helpfully trawl through and add music in, ignoring tracks that already exist. It no longer does this - you can add the folder, but it creates a duplicate for each song that already exists. These duplicates are unrated with no previous play information - it's as if iTunes doesn't agree that they're the same track.
I'm wondering if these problems are related - if iTunes in some way is able to play my previous library just fine, manage ratings and so on, but is in some way confused about whether they're actually in the iTunes folder. XP and Vista have different file paths (C:\Documents and Settings\ in XP, C:\Users\ in Vista)... would this have something to do with it? I suspect that there's a Junction (like a hard link, but in Windows) in place to redirect C:\Documents and Settings\ to C:\Users\, but this behaviour is not unversally supported cleanly.
Is there a way of editing my library details to include the correct pathname if that's the problem?
Man, sorry about the long post But it's really bugging me, and obviously I don't want to have to re-add and re-rate 22 days of music...

Ok I think I fixed it
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313 describes that you can gank the binary file, and re-import using the XML document.
The trick is of course to:
    1. Close iTunes
    2. Gank the binary file
    3. Search and replace the music locations in the XML
    4. Start iTunes
    5. Import the XML file
This works, but there are some caveats (need to resynch the iPod, etc.). But yay, my files are once again being deleted.

  • ITunes keeps restoring deleted songs/won't delete songs

I just realized that I posted this question accidentally in the iTunes for Mac forum so I figured I'd ask here since I'm actually a PC user.
I tried absolutely every suggestion in this thread (https://discussions.apple.com/message/17046601#17046601) and nothing is working for me.
I'm in the main music library, not a playlist.  The files are not read-only.
I've tried deleting the files every which way I can think of.  I've tried deleting them in both iTunes and Windows explorer.  Every time I do, they always temporarily show up as being deleted from iTunes but then they just magically come right back the next time I restart iTunes or sync my iPhone.
I can delete all of my songs except for these five (which I legitimately purchased from the iTunes store).
I think it's a problem with permissions.  I'm the administrator and yet I've tried editing the permission on the files. When I do, it shows that I have indeed edited the permission on the files giving all users (including myself) the right to delete these five annoying files that won't delete.  But then as soon as I do that and then try deleting them in iTunes or via windows explorer (even if I empty the recycle bin, it doesn't matter) the files just pop right back up in iTunes and Windows Explorer and revert back to their original permission state.
I've even tried renaming the files and then deleting them and then emptying my recycle bin and then closing down iTunes and then restarting iTunes and it still restores these five songs (even though the other 10 or so songs I deleted at the same time deleted just fine and haven't come back).
Does anybody have any ideas on how I can delete these songs?  They're not corrupted so far as I can tell, they play fine.  I just really hate them.  They're like the bloody zombies, everytime you think you've finally found a way to kill them, they keep coming back to life.

Sorted- no idea how but it was one combination of switching icloud downloads off, on, syncing 0 then all music, ejecting, reconnecting, and turning itunes and ipod off and on did the trick!

  • PMS colors in Photoshop to be used in InDesign?

    Hi,
I have a logo file that I'm doing in Photoshop that I want to throw into my InDesign document (a gift certificate - I like using ID so that the text is crisp), and this will be printed in 2 PMS colors (metallic gold 873 and green 330) on an offset printer.  If I want to print my logo in PMS gold 873, is it better to use the Pantone library in Photoshop and save as a CMYK file (is that correct?) and then place that file into my ID document?  Or someone told me to make the logo document a grayscale file, up the black in Levels and make sure the K in Info is 100%, flatten and save as a TIFF, place it in ID, then using the direct selection tool, pick the Pantone 873 in ID's swatches to color it in.  When I ask which is "better," I mean final print quality-wise.  The latter route looks a bit "fuzzy" to me when I blow it up in the PDF on-screen, whereas the first route looked sharper to me.
    Thanks,
    Jen

Unless your logo requires a photographic element, Photoshop is really one of the worst tools to be using to create a logo, especially if you are having issues with fuzziness.
Illustrator is more often used for logo creation.
If you do not have Illustrator, you can use InDesign to create a logo and export/save the page as an EPS file that can be re-placed in another InDesign document and scaled to any size without fuzziness.

  • I deleted time capsule files that were old, but now they won't delete from the trash

I deleted some time capsule files from the drive I am using for time machine.  It placed them in the trash, but it won't delete them.  It is asking if I want to delete only locked files or if I want to delete all files.  I have tried both, but they are still showing up in the trash.  It won't remove them.  Does anyone have any suggestions, as I do not know what else to do.  By the way I tried holding the option key and clicking empty trash and that did not work either.

Are these files being used by Time Machine. If so, this is how to delete files from a Time Machine backup. You can not delete them using Finder. Mac 101: Time Machine
Deleting data from a Time Machine backup
To delete all backups of one or more items from a Time Machine backup, follow these steps:
Click the Time Machine icon on your Dock to enter the Time Machine restore interface.
Click on the item you would like to delete. Command-click to select multiple items.
Control-click (or right click) the highlighted item(s) and select "Delete All Backups of..." from the contextual menu, or select "Delete all backups of..." from the Action Item menu.
Authenticate with an administrator password when prompted.
Important:  Do not use the Finder to move to the items to the Trash, or to move or delete items in your Time Machine backup repository. The folder containing your Time Machine backup repository is called "Backups.backupdb" and is located on the external disk or Time Capsule you have chosen in Time Machine preferences.
