PMU vs. SMU on iMac G5

I am having power issues, talked with Apple Care today regarding the power component problems (my iMac is of the first lots made in Sept of 2005). My first step is to reset the PMU, and the apple care guy told me to go to a particular troubleshooting page under the "computers and servers" part of the main support page so I could reset PMU myself later in the day. I didn't notice while I was on the phone with him that the article mentions only an internal power button and an SMU button. Is the SMU button the same as the PMU button on my iMac? If not, where is the diagram for the PMU button? Thanks!
BTW, the article is located at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908

It is much better to shut it down normally than to have to "force quit" regularly, toothfairy. You should actually run Disk Utility and "repair disk" while booted from your MacOS DVD, or start up in "Safe" mode, after EVERY forced shutdown to repair your directories. Even though you probably won't hurt the hardware there is a very good chance that you WILL damage your data if you keep on following the "forced shutdown" route.
But have a look at some of the other "sleep" issue threads here. It may be that you simply have a problem with one of your peripherals needing up dated drivers , or a bad USB hub or modem, for example.
You may also find that the computer will wake properly if you actually put the computer to sleep manually, using the Apple menu, rather than letting it fall asleep by itself, by the way.

  • IMac G5 freezing frequently

    Hi,
My two year-old iMac G5 has been relatively problem-free until now. Just recently, I have noticed it has started acting extremely sluggish on startup (I particularly notice the sound of the optical drive spinning slower). It also freezes constantly -- usually within 1-2 minutes of bootup it will freeze.
I've tried resetting the PMU and SMU, to no avail. I bought Extended AppleCare, so I should technically be able to send it in to Apple, but I'd like to at least have an idea of what the problem is. My initial guess was a power supply problem, because sometimes the screen flickers before it actually freezes up. Anyway, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You can check on how many memory sticks you have by going to the apple in the menu
bar, then About this Mac>more info, look under memory and see how many sticks are
    listed.
Haha... I don't think my iMac would be able to survive that long. Usually I can log in and click on one or two things before it freezes. Anyway, I opened it up, and yes indeed it was 2x512MB RAM. I tested each module individually, but the problem didn't go away, so I guess RAM isn't the problem. (Either that, or those Apple guys installed some really crappy RAM! :P)
Anyway, thanks everyone so much for your help. I guess I'll be calling Apple sometime today or tomorrow when I find time.

  • Isight Access Causes iMac to Hang

    Hi All,
Having completed two recent updates - Airport Extreme Update 2007-001 and Security Update 2007-001, I now find that my Imac 'hangs' every time an application tries to acces & use my iSight camera. Happens in iChat and Photobooth for example. Is also not user-specific (logged on as another user with same result). I have already tried rebooting (necessary to shutdown each time via the power button as no other mouse or keystrokes respond), and also downloaded these updates and re-installed them to no avail. Any ideas before I try an OSX re-install?? As far as I am aware iSight was working perfectly prior to these updates - regular use via iChat/Skype etc. I admit to recently having also reviewed and modified a few system preferences (not sure which ones or even if these would have had such a disastrous effect).
Oh for a 'system restore' button!! (sorry - ex PC user!!) Roll on Leopard!
No , seriously any help would be much appreciated.
    OSX is 10.4.4
    iChat is 3.1.6 (v441)

    I would re-order this list
    1) you can remove your system level cache file /Library/Caches
Use something like MacJanitor from this FAQ as it will clean them to the same Extent running the Cron Scripts do if the computer is On and Awake at the required times.
    2) reset your PRAM -- http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    3) update your OS. Your notes say you are running 10.4.4. Current version is 10.4.8. The OS update from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8 is rather substantial and resolved several issues.
Combo Updates are here Make sure you pick the right one.
    4) After installing ALL the Apple udpates I would use Disk Utility to repair your disk permissions.
    5) f that fails then reset your PMU/SMC/SMU depending on what kind of computer you have.
MacBook and MacBook Pro version It links to others at the top of the article.
    6) Only after careful consideration and asking more here
... an archive and install would be the next way to go -- http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120

  • IMac G5 keeps freezing

So, i found a 20 inch ABL iMac G5, but there was no PSU. So, i took the psu out of my 17 inch model, and it was giving me a hard time booting up, but when it did, it worked for about 5 min and then it froze and the fans went insane. Any ideas? I already tried resetting the pmu and smu or whatever they are called.

    hello!
it sounds (to me anyway) like a blown capacitors problem.
    you need to check them

  • IMac won't stay asleep

I recently installed Lion OS. When i try to put my iMac to sleep, it does so momentarily and then wakes up.

Had the exact same problem.  The trusty old mid-2007 iMac refused to stay asleep, whether I pressed the power button (with "Allow power button to put the computer to sleep" checked) or chose "Sleep" from the Apple menu or let it sit for the "Computer sleep" interval.  It would immediately wake up again in all cases.
The problem was somehow related to the powered USB hub itself.  Removing USB devices from the hub one at a time made no difference.  Unplugging the hub from the iMac solved the problem (but also made it impossible to use, as the wired Apple keyboard is plugged into that hub.)
The solution was powering down all accessories (including the USB hub) and the iMac, then turning on power to all accessories, letting them start up, then turning on the iMac.  There may have been some interaction between the USB hub, the iMac's PMU, and/or the iMac's USB controller(s) that prevented the iMac from sleeping.
(Note: it might be very useful to follow the advice in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17050677#17050677, which will show the specific reason for the machine waking up.  It may not be necessary to shut down all external devices to solve the problem.)

  • HT2173 iMac G5 2005. It lights up when the power is pressed but then goes off again with a second or two and then nothing happens . Any body knows whats happening? Please help.

Please can any help me. My iMac G5 2005 version has just pack up on me. The most obvious suspect is the PRAM battery.
Depending on precisely which G5 iMac you have:

  • Missing barcode label in iMac G4- i need that EEE code!

I need to replace the logic board on my G4 iMac. On the board I can find the part number and an empty box etched with the words 'barcode label'. Is it possible that my logic board has no serial number? Or has a lazy technician in my past tossed it out? How do I find out what part I need? The logic board part number 820-1501-A, the iMac serial number is W8***NHX. I would appreciate any help on this one. Thanks.

    Hey John,
It's possible there's a problem with the PMU. Not sure how the PMU works in these iMac G4s. I do see a block diagram for the iMac Flat Panel 700 and 800 but none for the 1 GHz. In that block diagram the PMU inputs to something called the Panges memory controller and I/O device controller. So a lot of things run through this chip including ATA, wireless LAN USB, Firewire , Ethernet....
You might run through these voltage checks from the manual:
"4. Remove keyboard, mouse, and other peripherals such as speakers.
    5. Disconnect the power cord, place the computer in the service stand, and remove the user access
    plate.
    6. Reset PMU. Refer to “Resetting the PMU on the Logic Board” mentioned earlier in this chapter.
    7. Using a voltmeter, check the voltage on the battery test point (see graphic below). If the reading is over
3.5 volts, go to the next step. If the reading is under 3.5 volts, replace the battery and test again.
    8. Plug the unit in, but do NOT press the power button. Using a voltmeter, check the voltage from the test
point marked “12VSLP” (see graphic above). You should get a reading of approximately 12 volts. If the
reading is 12 volts, go to the next step. If you don’t get a 12 volt reading, go to step 11.
    9. Press the power switch on the computer. Using a voltmeter, check the voltage on the test point marked
“12V” (see graphic above). You should get a reading of approximately 12 volts. If the reading is 12
volts, go to the next step. If you do not get a 12 volt reading, replace the main logic board.
    10. Using a voltmeter, check the voltage on the test point marked “5V” (see graphic above). You should get
a reading of approximately 5 volts. If the reading is 5 volts, go to the next step. If you do not get a 5 volt reading, replace the main logic board."
Those test points are under the user access panel on the bottom near the PMU button that you've already found. They're in the form of an "L" that faces to the left. Close to the apex is the ground point the tip of the lower leg being the battery test point and the tall upright being:
    5 V
    12 VSLP
    !2 V
    from top to bottom.
If you have more questions email me.

  • USB Slots don't work on 17 inch iMac 1.9 (iSight)

My USB slots won't work on my 17 inch iMac 1.9 (iSight). I tried them with more than one USB device, with the same results. I even tried two different keyboards and nothing. The serial number is: W85434WQTAQ

So your USB keyboard and mouse do not work?  You can try resetting SMU (power management).  Normally, I'd suggest resetting PRAM first
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
but that may not work if your USB keyboard is not working...  If resetting PRAM does work, I guess the USB port connected to the keyboard must be working.  If it does not help (or does not work), this is the procedure to reset SMU on iMac G5
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
When you connect it back to power, if you were using a power strip of some type, try connecting it directly to a wall outlet by itself (at least initially).  Start it up with nothing except power cord connected, then add standard keyboard and mouse.  Note if they are working or not.  If they are working, is your problem with other USB devices also solved?

  • No power from Fire Wire port to my audio interface

I face this problem after my set-up always has worked: I have a Quata Fire 610 Audio interface, powered thru my Fire wire 400. For some reason there is no power, and my Mac does not recognize the unit. I have tried both Fire Wire ports, and none of them works. The unit works fine on my other Mac (iMac G4) Is there any way I solve this problem. I have done the the disc utilities.
    Peter

FireWire ports have been known to fail.
Did you shut down (power OFF) the Power Mac G5, and restart? Did you also try the port on the front panel? Did you try a different FireWire cable? Is it possible to try another FireWire device on the ports, as a test?
You can also try a reset of the PMU or SMU (power management). Depending on your model

  • Very Strange Issues - Can't boot

I've tried everything. iMac G5 (no iSight) won't boot.
    Reset PMU
    Reset SMU
Removed and tested all RAM in similar iMac (all chips fine)
Left just one 512 MB RAM in broken iMac
    Zapped PRAM
    Booted Open-Firmware
    reset-nvram
    reset-all
I have an external firewire drive with Leopard, Tiger bootable partitions
iMac can't even see this drive on startup
iMac won't boot from original Tiger DVD
Normal boot sequence yields a flashing ? and Mac symbol as if it can't find the internal HD
When I hold C on boot, the iMac looks as if it will startup, it shows a gray screen with the APple centered. But then the fans kick on and nothign happens. This is the closest I can get to a successful boot. Nothing I know seems to work.
    Any ideas?

Sounds as if the drive is giving up the ghost, you seem to have covered all other possibilities. It could also be the logic board. I suggest you try booting from one of your externals, if that doesn't work, try using Target Disk Mode and use Disk Utility to repair the drive, if possible. Have you checked for swollen capacitors on the logic board?

  • External Firewire Drives Don't Mount.... i need a guru.

    Warning!!!!!
    i'm going to ramble....
2 much sake .. heh heh
i just got a brand butt spanking new iBook G4 14" 1.42 GHz
    Tiger pre-installed.
I ran Software Update. As you can tell by my info, i'm at 10.4.2 now.
In a minute i'll tell ya how i got BACK to 10.4.2 from 10.4.5
When i got my iBook I didn't plug my external firewire drives in until (about 2 days) after my update. So when i did get around to building my iTunes library, well, no luck.
My firewire drives would and do NOT mount!
By the way these particular peripherals are Western Digital firewire
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=694&pcreated=1036793224
    and AcomData Combo USB 2.0/Firewire
    http://www.acomdata.com/hdp/fs.html
    drives.
With a little exploration you'll find (at least i did) that they do not have firmware or driver updates for Mac. ( if you find them i'll give ya praise!)
The AcomData drive mounts with USB but not with firewire. The thing that
creeps me out is that my 3rd Gen firewire enabled iPod mounts right up no prob!
Another thing that ties me in knots is that these drives WILL MOUNT on my iBook12" running 10.3.9, as well as my old 5cH00L iMac DV 10.3.9!!!!
I thought it might be the Update so i did a clean install with the dvd provided by Apple and now i'm back to 10.4.2 but still no luck.
I've tried repairing permissions, starting, restarting, rebooting, plugging, unplugging, Updating, Downgrading, standing on my bloody head, looking all over the dotcom.
i swear i did all this with my peripherals unplugged.
i caught wind that though these companies may not provide updates for Mac, if i were to find out the companies that make the "chipsets?" within these drives that i might have luck.
i can't figure out what kind of "chipsets" (Oxford?) are in these drives or what to do if i knew anyway!
    exhale
i still believe i have the best machine on the planet right now but .......
    i need a guru.
    help.
    much obliged,

 G4 iBooks. iMac DV (graphite). gen 2,3,5 iPods Linux on the Pod too!   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hi, Clive.
Here is some general troubleshooting advice that may help:
    (1) Review the AppleCare Knowledge Base document "What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire device".
    (2) If this problem occurred after installing a recent Mac OS X Update, and you are also unable to mount CDs, DVDs, or disk images perform the steps in this Mac OS X Hints article.
    (3) The following additional steps will often help resolve problems with FireWire devices, particularly hard drives:(a) Power-on the FireWire drive before starting up (booting) your Mac.
    (b) Reset PRAM and NVRAM.
    (c) Reset the PMU or SMU: In the case of your iBook, I believe the article you want is "Resetting PowerBook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU)." You can also check the manual that came with your new iBook.
    (d) Try a different FireWire port. James Wiebe, CEO of WiebeTech, has published FireWire Port Failures in Host Computers and Peripheral Devices, a white paper providing backgroud information and technical analysis concerning the causes of failure for FireWire ports. This may provide additional diagnostic information.Note that some of the information above is from the "FireWire Problems" chapter of my book, Troubleshooting Mac® OS X.

  • Can't boot on hard drive or CD/DVD - grey/gray screen of death

A few weeks ago my PowerPC G5 Dual Processor running Leopard OS X froze while the screen saver was running. I hard-powered-off the computer --> held down power button for ~10 seconds. When I tried to start up again, I got the "gray/grey screen of death" with the Apple logo. The screen hung there and then fans starting ramping up to full speed with no sign off boot up. I know others have posted similar issues, but I wanted to start a new thread.
    Basic Specs:
PowerPC G5 Dual 2.5 Hz Processors
4 Gb memory (recently upgraded form 2 to 4) ***
Bought in early 2005 (I think)
    Here's a summary of what I've tried:
    DOES NOT WORK
    - booting up holding down C (for drive) --> straight to kill screen
    - booting up from original discs for G5 (from both C mode and Option mode)
    - booting up from 10.5 Leopard disc (from both C mode and Option mode)
    - booting up holding down Option-Comman-P-R --> straight to kill screen
    DOES WORK
    - connecting to secondary computer using target mode (holding down T) - I can see both of my hard drives
    - booting up holding down Option - I can select either my main drive (secondary is not present there but there is no OS on it) or CD/DVD in slot
    - booting from Apple Hardware Test (AHT) disk from Option menu
-- I ran disk checks, had errors. I ran Disk Warrior from secondary computer in target mode and repaired the drive, running the AHT test again shows no errors
    - ran disk repair from secondary computer to fix errors (using disk utility and disc warrior)
    OTHER THINGS I'VE DONE
    - replaced backup battery on motherboard that was weak at only ~70 mV with fresher battery at ~3.6V
    - held down PMU (not SMU) reset button for 30 seconds
    - (main fans were cleaned a few weeks before issue)
    - two weeks before issue I installed more memory (from 2 Gb to 4 Gb with two new 1 Gb cards)
    - backed up data - so I can delete drives if needed
    THOUGHTS
    - I'm concerned that under CPU it shows 158950.77 GHz - shouldn't it be showing two CPU?
    - the drives look healthy when looking at them in target mode
    - issue is occurring between power up and drive selection (since CD/DVD is also not viewable)
    - maybe the new memory caused local over heating to the motherboard?
    - I may be able to replace the heat sink, but the spare computer I have access to has different looking hardware. It's probably a different model of the G5. My computer has one metal case cover and the extra one has a split case cover.
    NEXT STEP
    - I need to back up secondary drive fully first
    - pull out new memory sticks
    - pull out all memory except originals
    - pull out secondary drive
    LAST RESORT
    - buy external case for drives and cry about how no one will buy my dead desktop
Because this is a long description, I will post updates in the comments and a final comment here:

  • OS hangs at grey startup screen, won't boot into safe mode

I rebooted my G5 this morning and when it came back up, it hung on the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning 'gear' progress bar. I tried rebooting several times, but that didn't help. I tried booting from the install DVD (which it did) and ran disk utility (both verify & repair on the start up drive and on permissions. It claims to have found permission errors and fixed them.) I hunted for answers online and tried to boot into safe mode, which did not work.
Someone mentioned booting into verbose mode and I saw that the load sequence was choaking on the login.
What could the problem be and how can I fix it?

    Hi Yosarian,
Minor permissions repairs are no concern: The good news is that your data is probably OK.
Three things can be happening: Some of the machines boot settings are corrupted, or the OS files or settings are damaged, or there's a hardware problem.
Resetting the machines power management chip, called a PMU or SMU, depending on your computer, and the PRAM will resolve machine boot settings problems. Run a google search for your model of Mac plus reset pmu OR smu for instructions. After that, reboot your computer and hold Option-Apple-P-R down as you power on. Hold all 4 keys until you hear the startup chime a second time.
You can test your hardware with the grey disk that came with it that ays AHT in little letters. Boot from the CD and run the extended test. Be patient: AHT can take a long time to boot and run.
If you reset your PMU and PRAM and pass a hardware diagnostic but still can't boot normally, in safe mode, or in single-user mode, the problem is system software. Reinstall from your latest installer, checking off Archive and Install and Preserve Users and Settings from the Options screen available at the screen where you choose which disk to install to.
    Good luck,
    John

  • Mac OS 10.4.3 and Sleep Light Update

So, after installing Mac OS 10.4.3 update through Software Update on my Rev. A iMac G5 I have experienced the same "fans at full blast" issue that others have reported on reboot. However, the fans went back to normal speed after the system loaded the Finder.
I now just noticed that the sleep light is very bright during the night time hours so I am guessing that this update removes the infamous and troublesome (for many) sleep light firmware update. Can anyone else confirm this?

Finally I find how to reset CORRECTLY the SMU and resolve the problem about the sleep light!
Pay attention, because to reset the SMU in iMac rev A - the first generation - like mine (dec. 2004) must open the backside of Mac and following the instruction like here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301283
    at the point 11.
In a few words, disconnect all the plugs, open the back, reconnect the power cord, (in the center a little green led is on) ....
Press the SMU reset button (the small, metal button next to the internal power button, shown below) to reset system and power management.
    Its work. wow
    take care ;))

  • Can't Verify Disc Permissions in 10.5.2... among other G5 problems

I've been experiencing all kinds of issues with my first release PowerMac G5 (comatose sleep mode, racing cooling fans, video failure after restart, etc.). I've since learned not to be an early-adopter.
I had these problems running on 10.4.10 (had to go back to that after 10.4.11 really screwed up my machine). Issues subsided somewhat for a month or so but ten resurfaced with a vengeance. So, now, I've upgraded up to 10.5.2, reset PMU (yes, PMU, not SMU - early G5, remember), reset the PRAM/NVRAM, etc. without any remedy, so I'm trying to run Disk Utility.
I've restarted from my Leopard install DVD and have been able to successfully run 'Verify Disc' and received the good news that "The Volume X appears to be OK." Now, when I try to run 'Verify Disc Permissions' it starts but then just sits there, no progress bar... no progress. Eventually the screen just goes to sleep and never finalizes (or even starts?) the 'Verify Disc Permissions' process. Have tried multiple times and the only thing I can do is hit the 'Stop Permissions Verify' button, otherwise, if it does sleep the process just freezes and all I can do is hard restart.
    Any ideas?

It takes anywhere from 10-40 minutes to repair permissions, depending on what's installed and what's contained in /Library/Receipts/bom/. The repair permissions operation has changed in Leopard. The stalled progress bar is an unresolved bug (they haven't figured out how to make it work whilst it's building the a.receiptdb, in /Library/Receipts/db/. To see what's really going on, open that folder in a Finder window, select list view, launch Disk Utility, select your boot volume, and click on repair permissions. Watch the Finder window flash files that are being read and written to a new a.receiptdb file. That's what's taking all the time and freezing the progress bar. Once that's finished, the progress bar starts moving and the permissions are being checked and repaired. Also note, that you won't get any *they were repaired* message back for any that are noted to be incorrect.
BTW, upgrading/updating when you have a hosed system is never a good move.
