PNG colour oddity in safari
Does anyone know why Safari and Preview (Voorvertoning) show my png image with other colours than photoshop and fireworks? It can't be the colour management as windows computers show it the correct way. Is the png display in safari flawed?
You can see the image here:
Powerbook G4 Titanium Mac OS X (10.4.3) Mac Mini
SFW and ImageReady CS2 have an Embed Profile option
in JPEG (not sure if it shows up in PNG option?)
The option is not available for png
+++++++
GIF is "multicolored" (256 colors) and it animates
and supports transparent backgrounds with Matte
blending — are you saying PNG displays more than 256
colors?
What about file size between the two?
PNG has definitely more colours than gif (it is truecolor, 16.7 million colours), it does support transparent backgrounds (only Internet Explorer struggles with the transparency, but that will be solved in IE 7), it's lossless and it's filesize is much smaller (though you might have to drop some unused colours out first). Animated PNG is not supported by the PNG consortium, but animated PNGs do exist.
By the way, PNG is the standard image format of Macromedia (or should I say Adobe ) Fireworks. This will probably mean that the PNG support in Photoshop will be better on the next release.
This is what my image looks like in gif:

Why don't .png files display in Safari for iPhone, iPad?
Why don't .png files display in Safari for iPhone, iPad?
James,
Thanks for your response. The image was on a site I maintain. I have already replaced the image with a jpg, which works fine. I believe I can duplicate the problem, if you think it is worth it. Gimme a few...
http://www.oaksbible.org/Contents/about2.html is the page with the png I restored to use.
http://www.oaksbible.org/Contents/about.html is the page with the replacement jpg
Just checked. The png still does not display on iPhone(5) or iPad(3). The image was also made by me in pixelmator and both (png and jpg) were exprted from pixelmator.
thanks again,

PNG colour profiles - and this format for print
I know it's taboo to talk about PNG for printing.
But I can't find and I've searched the forums - there was a post made about embedding colour profiles a while ago.
I know PNG is a RGB only format, but I'm 36.8% sure I read something about embedding either RGB or ... wait for it CMYK profiles into PNG files.
If anyone can shed any light on this - and how about PNG for print - I've been against it for a long time - but it is a lossless format, it can carry 64 bit data.
I know I know - but I thought I'd ask anyway - see what people think. You can't save a PNG with a profile out of Photoshop, but it looks like you can embed one via the image events scripts that ship with OSX (/Library/Scripts/ColorSync/embed). Unfortunately ID ignores the embedded profile and uses the document's assigned profile instead. PNGs do respond to ID's RGB profile and the RGB profile will have an effect on the CMYK separation when it happens.
Here's ProPhoto and sRGB:
From your ID document you can also assign a profile, which conflicts with the doc's profile, by selecting the png and choosing Image Color Settings.... So, you could assign AdobeRGB as your doc's profile and assign sRGB to all your pngs. -
Hi,
For a long while now, I've been noticing some oddities in OSX 10.8 regarding display of images in Safari.
Having just installed 10.8.5 combo, I was hoping it would finally be fixed.
It's difficult to describe what the problem is, but certain colours and images in Safari are not displaying correctly. Its seems images are displayed correctly most of the time, with a short delay until the image is displayed with the correct colour. Backgrounds of certain webpages often don't display correctly, where part of the page is loaded showing a different colour or brightness of the background. Often text colour is also not shown correctly, but these differences are hardly noticable. On some ocasions, image files are loaded with the top half appearing slightly different to the bottom half... slight colour variations, different black points and overall brightness.
The problem is not consistent, but often shows up in some of my frequently visited pages. Refreshing a page, or scrolling the page all the way down and up again, will sometimes make the page display properly. It seems to me as a colour sync issue in Safari, but I'm not really sure. I have reset Safari multiple times. I have reinstalles the OS.
Does anyone know if this is a known issue, and if there is perhaps a fix?
I have a Macbook Pro 9.1 2.3GHz 16GB RAM running OSX 10.8.5. Both my monitors are calibrated with a Spyder Elite 4, and these problem I'm experiencing seem to be exlusively limited to Safari. I'm not a fan of Crhome or Firefox, so changing browsers is not something I consider an option.
Bellow is a creenshot showing a common issue I'm experiencing.
Thanks in advance for any insight...

Try emptying the cache. Press Command + Option + E. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that doesn't help, open a Finder window. From the Finder window click Go > Go to Folder.
Type or copy paste the following:
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test again.
If that doesn't help, from your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari and test again. -
Autocomplete oddity in Safari 4
How does Safari decide how to autocomplete a URL that you're typing? There seems to be no consistency.
For example, typing "linkedin" will either result in "http://linkedin/" (which Safari cannot, obviously, find) or "http://www.linkedin.com" (which is the correct one).
So far, I have found no combination of cleared history, bookmarks or other voodoo that explains the decision-making process. However, if the first option is autocompleted (with failure), a second attempt at typing "linkedin" will always return the correct URL.Greetings,
The only items that are autocompleted are those that are bookmarked or in your History. If you had mistakenly typed "linkedin" and pressed Return quickly enough, you would obviously get an error, and that error would now be in your history, along with the correct URL if you bookmarked it or visited it earlier.
So the next time you type "linkedin" it should give you the correct URL if you don't type quite as fast as the first time, rather than the incorrect URL you got previously. -
Safari Colour Profile issues?
I currently have a png logo, part of it is blue: (#006E93). This is the same blue used for the text in the heading of a website I'm developing. Both blues look different. However in Firefox and Chrome they look the same.
I have also discovered that if I increase the size of the logo with 300dpi it shows correctly in Safari as does a repeated background image.
Please note I have changed the image it is the same png in every instance,
Safari
Firefox
Chrome
Safari increased size of png
Safari png as background image repeated, as you can see is fine.
Safari no-repeat, not the same colour.
Any ideas of whats causing this problem?
I have tried different colour profile settings, and even different file types inc svg and I keep getting the same problem?
ThanksThe resultant colour is blue (approx C92M68Y18K0).
What preset are you using for the Export, or what are the Output settings? Have you tried PDF/X?
PDF/X-4 will leave color unchanged and profile everything, so a color change like you are describing most likely means the wrong output profile is being used in the UK.
PDF/X-1a forces everything into your doc's CMYK space and makes conversions at output less likely—with X-1a your 80|80|0|0 mix will probably be output unchanged. -
Safari extensions: icons not coloured, why?
My Safari windows look grey and bleak, just like the weather.
I've doublechecked my security preferences and allowed third party plug-in access etc, is it that extensions just don't install as coloured icons in Safari? My friend's web browser allows colour and it makes icons easier to find in the Toolbar.
Thanks in anticipation for any useful advice.Hi..
My friend's web browser allows colour and it makes icons easier to find in the Toolbar.
Ask your friend what third party plugin or extension they have installed. -

Safari fails to start and crashes
Today I tried to open a link from an Apple ap-store email and Safari failed to open and reported a crash error message, It worked great yesterday? I searched through the forums and tried a few of the listed fixes but nothing has worked for me. So far the most complex attempt was deleting the webpageicons.db file, it did not help. I placed the webpagicons.db file back where it came from just incase. I have also tried to see if I have any plug ins running but Safari dosn't even load so I cant even get into the preferences options. I am very much a rookie with my iMac as I have rarely had any issues that needed support. This will be the first major trouble I have had with my mac since I bought it. I posted one of the error messages below, I have tried to open Safari nine times and each time it closes out without starting. Any help would be greatfull, thank you in advance.

I think I was able to get Safari to uninstall properly this time, I was prompted for a password and it shows in the trash can now. However after trying to reinstall it still errors out at the very end of the install and asks me to contact the software manufacturer? Ugh...
Andy,
Here is the text from console, sorry its a long one for only 20 min. of up time. I've never used console before wow is there a lot going on here... I grabbed the wrong log the first time and had to come back and edit... I also left some of the original text from the old log as it has a bunch of repeating FLASH reports that might mean something.

Safari not displaying texts on YouTube pages properly
Hi, I've been having this weird problem with Safari for almost two months now even before the 5.1.4 update. I even went to Apple Genius with my macbook pro and they said the problem is minor and should be fixed with the new update (5.1.4), but the problem still persists!
Basically, whenever I go on YouTube for EVERY/any video and click on the "more info" button to look at the information spread on videos, all the remaining texts and links are "invisible." I have to literally highlight everything in the information spread in order to permanently display the texts, links, etc after enlarging the information tab. I've tried updating everything (Safari--both 5.1.3 and 5.1.4, OSX, repairing disk permissions, etc) to NO AVAIL! It's so frustrating and annoying. I'm not that tech savvy, so I don't quite understand what kind of problem this applies to whether CSS, JAVA, Flash, or whatever else. A genius bar representative said it's not Flash (which I also updated and reinstalled a few times), since I can load and watch videos perfectly fine. He was able to reproduce the problem on one of the macbook airs at the store and that's when he said the problem should be fixed with the newest update. Obviously not. Please help me resolve this issue or at least, understand it. It's really frustrating. Chrome and other browsers work perfectly fine with YouTube on my MacBook as well.
Here is a screenshot of what I am talking about:

Thank you!Safari forum has the answers.

Over saturated Images in Safari
I'm experiencing an issue where Safari shows images optimised for the web in a very over saturated form.
It is really driving me mad!
My MackBook Pro and 23" apple LCD are both colour calibrated using the Spyder2Pro colouromitor. I use those profiles for the screens and the colours are great.
Here's my workflow:
- My camera is set to use Adobe RGB 1998 icc profile
- I take images in RAW format and import them into Aperture (ver 1.5).
- When I have made any adjustments I export them from Apertue into jpeg format
- I have set-up Aperture to use the sRGB colour space when exporting images into jpeg format from Aperture (the images will mainly be used for the web which is why I use sRGB)
- I open the images using Photoshop and use the 'optimise for web' feature to keep the file size low
- I select the option that says 'embed icc profile'
- Photoshop then embeds the sRGB icc profile in the image
If I look at the image, it looks just fine in Photoshop or any other image viewing program. If I then open it in Safari it looks way over sturated.
I have tried everything and I just can't work it out.
I've even tried setting my monitor colour space to that of sRGB to see if it makes any difference, and it doesn't.
However, if I choose NOT to embedd the icc profile in the image, then Safari opens the image and it looks just like the jpeg when I view it within Photohop or any other image veiwer.
I can view the images using Internet Explorer on a Windows PC and they appear to be fine. I guess thats because IE ignores colour profiles where Safari will use them if they exist.
It seems Safari is reading the colour profile incorrectly in the image.
Can anyone tell me whats going on?Hi
I can sympathise with how annoying this must be - and although I haven't looked into it myself, I do recall several other posts over the last 18months or so, with the same issue.
I can't dig out the exact posts now, but maybe the following might lead somewhere?
http://webkit.org/blog/73/color-spaces/
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302827
http://www.gballard.net/psd/golive_pageprofile/embeddedJPEGprofiles.html
sorry I can't locate the threads I remember- I found one or two, but they were un-answered. -
Multi swf tiles break in safari 3.0 XP
I have a right side bar with 5 swf tiles going down
vertically.
When I test my page in all other browser it renders perfect.
When I test in safari 3.0 beta xp the swfs break up and go into one
another when scolling down the page.
This bug is killing me are there any fixes for this? It's because Safari has support for Colour Management.
Firefox and IE assume sRGB colour profile.
Safari checks images for colour profile information and displays them accordingly.

My Safari is not loading YouTube correctly, please help.
Starting on January 15th, 2009, my Safari no longer loads Youtube.com correctly. The homepage looks bizarre, and not like it should. The other links on the page all have similar issues. I have below two screenshots to help visualize what I am trying to describe:
http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp90/Mezamete/Picture1.png
http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp90/Mezamete/Picture1-1.png
This is with Safari version 2.0.4 (419.3)
Flash player is freshly updated, if anyone is curious about that.
I would love to be able to use Safari again to view my youtube. As it is, I can see it just fine in Firefox.Hi,
Have you tried resetting Safari? You can do this via Safari menu > Reset Safari...
Also, is there a reason why you aren't running the latest versions of OS X and Safari? OS X 10.4.11 comes with Safari 3, and the latest updates to 10.4.11 now take Safari up to 3.2.1. The latest versions can be obtained by running System Preferences > Software Update -
Safari code sign problem returns
Should have stayed with 4.0.2.
After installing 4.0.3 using Software Update:
~] codesign -vvv /Applications/Safari.app/
/Applications/Safari.app/: a sealed resource is missing or invalid
/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/PageLoadTest.nib/objects.nib: resource added
/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/WebApplication128Compass.png: resource added
/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/WebApplication128PageBase.png: resource added

And once again the Leopard firewall is unhappy, and constantly asks if I want to allow Safari to accept incoming network connections.
This is getting very frustrating, more like what I'd expect from Microsoft (think Vista) than Apple. Looks like I'll be investigating how to revert to 4.0.2. Good grief.Deleted the 4.0.3 gotten via Software Update and re-installed using Safari4.0.3Leo.dmg.
Success!
codesign -vvv /Applications/Safari.app/
/Applications/Safari.app/: valid on disk
And the Leopard firewall is happy again. (I wonder why no one else seems to have these problems.)
