PNG imported to Indesign CC gets background added back in

Hey guys, really confused about this, so I opened an image in photoshop and took out the background it was white but darker because of the actual lighting of the image. I used the blend mode to remove the background and then I flattened the image. I saved the image as a png and when I place it into indesign the image gets the background added back in, not a new white background, but the original shaded white from the photo I began with. I tried placing in indesign as a psd file, png, jpeg, and png 24 into indesign, no change. Also with indesign's "import settings" I tried with "Use transparency information" selected and without. I actually wouldn't mind if a white background to the image was added it, it is just that its the original darker white so it doesn't look right with indesign's which paper backing. I also opened the png files in Preview just to make sure they showed up as transparent and they did. Anyone know what to do?

I think this must be where you went wrong. I'm not certain I know what exactly you did that you describe as "used the blend mode" but generally speaking blend modes are dependent on underlying pixels to produce a perceived result. It may appear that you've achieved transparency, but that could be dependent, when true transparency is independently transparent pixels. You need to actually erase (or delete) the areas you want to be transparent, then save properly as a transparent PNG.

  • How can I add .PNG images to templates without getting a white background?

I'm having problems with a image field when I add a .png image which doesnt have a background it is showing up with a white background. Is it possible to use images in templates so you can overlay them on something else?

Hi, You can do this but only with a PNG with a palette of 256 colors (maybe GIF as well) so doesn't get a lot of use, good enough for image buttons and the like, but might be ok for your image as it does not have that many colors. Otherwise radzmar's suggestion would be the better approach.
This is the link I was tring to find (in your previous thread) that tells how to do it using GIMP (a free image editor), http://smartforms.business.gov.au/DeveloperResources/Pages/HintsandTips.aspx ,  but the one I have uploaded here comes from photoshop (in photoshop it is called an indexed png).

I converted my mail boxes from POP to imap for the purpose of syncing all my devices. I backed up my mail boxes and further more perfomed a timemachine backup.
Upon restoring ther mailboxes, either by manually copying them to the mailboxes folder, and restoring a timemachine backup, both pocesses result in the above problem.

Lightroom trial doesn't show complete menu selections or import button.  Also get error message on launch:  An error occurred when attempting to change modules.  I am unable to find/see the following file to try renaming the SLCache and SLStore files:  System Library/Application Support/Adobe.  Any ideas?  I only have 16 days left on the trial and have been unable to get it to work on my Macbook Pro.  This is all I am seeing after Lightroom opens.  Thanks!

Thanks to both of you for attempting to help.  I finally figured out what was wrong . . . it was a Permissions problem.  Very frustrating, but after scouring the troubleshooting tips I finally found the one that solved my problem.  I had to add a User and give it Read/Write privileges to Lightroom.  The file I had to add the User to was Hidden on my Mac, so that added an even bigger challenge to the mystery.  Only a few days left on my trial version!  I hope I have time to try it out!

  • Save spot colours in Photoshop for import to Indesign

I'm having problems in Indesign due to using drop shadows in some graphics which are over an image with transparencies. What I think would solve the problem is to remove the transparencies in the image using photoshop and then use that. However, the image has spot colours which is giving me headaches. I haven't found a way of importing the spot colours directly into photoshop from illustrator or whatever - they always seem to get converted to CMYK. However, I have managed to recreate the spot colour in Photoshop as a channel - so the file is CYMK+1spot channel. However, when I try to import the psd file into Indesign I get an error message "The file uses an unsupported colour space...". I have tried exporting as eps but that didn't work either. I have seen various help messages which seem to imply that you can import spot colours from photoshop - can someone suggest what I am doing wrong ? I use CS5.

Besides saclint the image up, which reduces the "effective" resolution, do you have your display performance in ID set to High Quality Display? You are not looking at actual pixels in ID, just a jpeg preview, and that will also make a difference, and any edges which are not truly horizontal or vertical will always have some sort of stair-stepping in a pixel-based of the pixels to approximate the line, and this can become more noticeable whn you zoom in or when you scale upwards.

  • XML import : make InDesign access external entities

    Hello,
I'm importing XML files in InDesign via a XSLT transformation.
The source file location is on a web server (it works perfectly, you can import an online XML file in InDesign). This is a generic source file, wich contains urls to specific XML files that will be effectively imported. This multiple-input transformation is performed in XSLT with the document() function.
It works well with Saxon, but the InDesign's processor doesn't seem to handle that and returns : "The external entity {file.xml} cannot be found".
I understand this is a complex operation, but is there any way to outpass this limitation within InDesign ?
    Thanks :-)

    Thanks for answering.
I've found a solution so this is just to let you know.
I use the desktop version of InDesign. I'm importing in it, with a script, "specific" XML files located on a web server (an OAI-PMH repository). So the paths of these files start with http.
These paths are given by a "generic" XML file also located on the repository, so its path also starts with http.
The source file I import is the generic XML file, from which a XSLT extracts the web addresses of the specific XML files to process them.
A template would look like :
    <xsl:template match="oai:OAI-PMH/div">
            <xsl:apply-templates
                   select="document(@online_path)/rootNode"/>
    </xsl:template>
Then the XSLT transform all the specific files to make a really big and single XML file which is the one really being imported in InDesign. It's a single transformation with multiple-input.
The InDesign's XSLT processor can get an input from an online repository, but it doesn't seem to handle the document() function so it can't make multiple input. My solution is to let Saxon do this work. The script writes a batch file calling Saxon with some parameters, executes it and waits for the output, which is then imported in InDesign with no more processing. I would have preferred to let InDesign do the transformation but this is ok.
I hope I was clear enough.

  • Getting contacts added on phone into address book.

I just got my iPhone yesterday and after importing my contacts from my old phone from a .csv file I had over 200 duplicate "no name" contacts. I followed the instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2481 and was able to get rid of the duplicates and replace the contacts with what was in my address book. For some reason the force sync where you replace the contents of the phone contact list with your address book contacts did not work so I had to use that.
Now I STILL can not get contacts added on my phone to be entered into my address book after sync. Why is that? I thought the above step was supposed to clear out any issues and force the sync to work correctly?
I DO NOT have Mobileme but I do not think that is necessary for my contacts on my phone to be imported when I sync my iPhone 4.
    How do I fix this

You were not turning in the appropriate direction before and/or in the appropriate stance. Plus the techno gods were not smiling on you.
But I am glad they finally let you sync.

  • Selecting a layer while importing an InDesign Document

    Hello All,
Does any one know how to select a layer while importing an InDesign document into another document. I have been trying to achieve this since a long time but not able to find the correct API.
If any one has tried please do let me know.
    Thanks all in advance

    Hello all,
Some how from previous post I found I would be able to manage layers of the imported document using IGrpahicLayerInfo. With this I am able to get the Layer name and its information. But not able to set the Layers visibility through command. The command is executed successfully but does not reflect in the document.
Please let me know if anyone has achieved this succesfully.
    Thanks all.

  • PDF color changing when imported into InDesign 6

I am importing a customers pdf into InDesign 6. When I do the import the color is changing from the original PDF colors. The original color in the pdf is 0/95/100/29 and when imported to InDesign 6 it becomes 21/98/100/12. Is there a setting I need in InDesign 6 to keep the original PDF colors intact?

Are you using the eye dropper tool to get those numbers?  It could be the way the original PDF was created.  I have a feeling that the original settings ere set to "adapt" to color workflows or something similar.  See if you can open the PDF in Acrobat and set the file to "Leave Color Unchanged" if you can...somewhere in the file's profile or color setting.  It could also be the preview in InDesign.  If somehow there is a way to find out which color settings were applied to the PDF; you could then match those in InDesign's Color Settings.  If it is the preview reading, then the file should proof well.  If InDesign has corrupted the PDF's original color, then the file will proof bad.  I think it prudent to investigate the PDF's original Color Settings vs. InDesign's.  Try posting this question in the InDesign forum and see what you get back.  I'd be curious to know what they have to say over there.

  • Organizer 9 often gets error adding keyword

I spent more than a week evaluating Organizer 9 for my use by playing with a test catalog with several raw photos from various cameras I have.  I tried everything I could think of and posted here a few times asking questions.  Everything seemed to be working well.   I also saw posts saying some people had 100k photos in Organizer.  All looked good.  I wanted to be fairly confident before importing my 50k out-of-camera original photos and then spending a lot of time on adding keywords and star ratings since I didn't want to waste all that time and work if Organizer would not be a good fit for what I want or didn't work well.  All signals were go.
A few days ago I got started on the real catalog.  I turned off all the analyze stuff since I don't need it and it was likely to just slow the computer down.  I imported about 50k photos.  I then started adding keywords.  I first made a pass through all photos and assigned a keyword for each photo that had the country or U.S. state where the photo was taken.  No problems.
I then started another pass through all the photos adding one or two more keywords to some of the photos.  I have been having problems with this though.  I often, but not always, get a pop-up window with a message from Organizer saying it got an error adding a keyword to a photo.  I click Okay and then Organizer hangs for several seconds and down at the bottom left of the screen it says Searching.  Finally Organizer comes back, but now the thumbnail view doesn't show all the photos -- it shows only a subset.  I then click Show all and then spend a lot of time scrolling into the 50k photos and looking for where I left off before the error.  I then try to assign the keyword to the photo again and get the error again.  I click okay again.  This time it also says Searching for a few seconds, but when Organizer is ready again this time the thumbnail view has not changed so that is good.  I then add the keyword and this time it works.  Whenever I get the error the exact same sequence happens exactly like this with no variations:
    1.  Error adding keyword
    2.  Long wait with Searching shown in the lower left
    3.  Thumbnail view changes
    4.  I click on Show all and scroll down to where I left off
    5.  Again try to assign the keyword
    6,  Error adding keyword again
    7.  Wait with Searching shown in the lower left
    8.  This time thumbnail view didn't get changed
    9.  Try to assign keyword again and this time it succeeds
By the way, the error window I get says:  Error Applying Keyword Tag(s).  It always is this same sequence.  Much of the time I get no errors and then I will get one and go through the above sequence.  I often can do a few more with no error and then an error again.  It seems to be random.  Sometimes it might happen 2 or 3 times in a row and sometimes it takes a long time until it happens again.
I repaired the catalog, but it said there were no errors.  I also optimized the catalog.  Remember that I have just imported the photos and have been adding keywords.  I have not actually made much use of the catalog.  I have not been deleting or anything else.  Just import and add keywords.
    Any ideas?  Thanks!

    Are you running Windows?
How many drives on your computer, and how much free space on each?
Which drive are you using for your PSE scratch disk?
    Ken, thanks for your reply.
The photos are on a 1tb USB 2.0 external hd.  The catalog is on my computer local C: drive.  I am running Win7 64-bit.  The C: drive has 151gb free.  The external hd has 245gb free.  The PSE scratch disk is the default since I haven't changed anything, I suppose that would be the C: drive.
Adding keywords to all photos on the first round worked without problem.  Adding one or two additional keywords to some of the photos on my second round works most of the time, but maybe about 20% of the time I get the error.  The error always goes away after the above lengthy, very annoying sequence though and I can continue.

  • PNG import in Aperture 3.2.2

I imported some PNG files recently, all with transparent backgrounds. Aperture mangled them superbly and made them nicely unsuable. Google's Picasa handled the files perfectly. Is this PNG problem known where Aperture is concerned and if that is the case, is a fix planned (sooner rather than later) ?

But it is clearly stated (well, in one of the footnotes ) in the tech specs of Aperture, http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/
    see the footnote 2:
Aperture maintains but does not display layer and alpha channel information in PSD files.
Aperture is designed to handle images imported from digital cameras:
Using Aperture, you can import JPEG images from virtually all digital cameras. Shooting RAW? Aperture supports the RAW formats from a wide range of digital SLRs and medium-format cameras and camera backs. You’ll find an extensive list of supported camera models on the RAW support page.

  • What kind of Video can I import into InDesign?

I've read that Acrobat 9 and newer can display flash video files within a PDF. I tried importing an .flv file into InDesign but it did not work. Is this possible to do? Also, are there any other types of video files that can be imported into InDesign?
The idea is to do a quick reference guide for a software application which will have an embedded flash video file showing motion capture of the application in action.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Acrobat 9 can display Flash (SWF) files well if you add the files within Acrobat. However, if you add the SWF files in InDesign and then export to PDF, the SWF files may not play, especially on a Mac. You're better off leaving a placeholder in InDesign and then adding the SWF in Acrobat to the exported PDF. For more details, see Sandee Cohen's entry:
