PNG w/ transparency opens and looks horrible

I have a PNG sprite map. 85KB in size. Took it to an online PNG crush, got it down to 29KB and it looks great.
When Photoshop (CS5 on Win7x64) opens that file, there is transparency, but the edges look miserable. Very jagged and aliased. The file opens in Indexed 8-bit, but even changing the mode to RGB and high bits per channel, it looks very ugly.
I browsed out to the file hosted on our website, cleared the cache and viewed just the image online through the browser. It looks fantastic. Refreshed page and it still looks great. Downloaded that file to local PC, opened in PS CS5 and it's back to looking miserable. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here? Is it because I took this PNG file to some online compressor that PS can read the file buy degrades its quality?

Oh wait. Nevermind. Seems there's a note at the very bottom of the PNG optimizer website which states that:
PS CS5 and earlier cannot properly VIEW an indexed PNG with Alpha transparency (my apparent issue). But they also state (and I'm not sure how current this is) that no version of PS supports MAKING indexed PNG with Alpha transparency.
If that's true, I'm very surprised at Adobe. I have no plans to upgrade to a later version of PS, but with 65-75% filesize savings, it's amazing the software doesn't have that support.

HT3159 When I double click on IPhoto to open and look at my photos the APP store trys to open it. I never had this issue before. Why now?

I was using IPhoto looking at creating a Book when I uploaded the book for purchasing the site froze. I stopped the upload turned off computer and when I restarted the computer IPhoto dissappeared. I called Apple and the lady talked me through restoring IPhoto. She found it in the trash.It worked fine for a day or two, I uploaded more photos from Nikon camera closed IPhoto and now it won't open. The App Store trys to open it but it times out and won't connect.
When I double click on IPhoto to open and look at my photos the APP store trys to open it. I never had this issue before. What do I do?

Try dragging a photo to the desk top, highlight it and press COMMAND I this will open the info window, in the drop down menu "open with" select either preview, or other, then select iPhoto. Preview is the default.
Then click "Change All"

I used List Directory on advanced IO , to list all .. the Name is the same for all ... then i used Name_ concateneted with Serial(typed)* .. this command serial* ll list all serials equal the typed , in my case , ll exist only one , cuz its a count this serial .Then i pass the path to the delete , and its done !

Saving png w/transparent background and blend mode

I have a logo that I want to layer on top of a background image that will together act as the header for the webpage.
The easy thing to do would be to create an image on photoshop layering the background image and the logo, with the logo blend effect, and then save and upload. Problem is that I want the background image to resize with the browser window - without resizing the logo.
Therefore, I figured I could save the background image and logo files separately, and then layer them using HTML and CSS. For it to look comparable therefore, I want to keep the background of the logo transparent. I would also like to set the blend mode of the logo to linear dodge (add) - so that whatever size the background image is scaled to, the logo remains the same size, with the same blend mode. The problem is that when I save the logo as a transparent png file (24-bit), it is not maintaining the blend mode.
What am I doing wrong?

Blending modes are algorithms in the rendering device/ application (Photoshop, other image editors, browsers), not data. there is no way to retain them just by saving to a specific format. if you dumbed down PS and removed all belnding modes, it would behave just the same as your browser.

Hi Everybody,
I need an iPad app that can open an image and has a Magic Wand-type tool so I can select white background around a subject. Then delete the white areas so it becomes transparent. Then save as a PNG with transparency. I've tried Pixelmator...I can select the white but I can not delete the white. I downloaded Photoshop Express...no magic wand tool.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

It's a shame you don't have Mac. The feature is built in the system (in Preview, Pages, etc).

Assuming you do not have access to the "original" video/project and the YouTube video is the only copy, there is a method. Try "YouTube Downloader" which is a free software that allows you to download clips from YouTube as .mp4 files. You can then edit with Premiere, and re-encode again for upload to YouTube. Just keep in mind that you are re-compressing the video so there will be some quality loss. The better the quality of the original, the better the copy will hold up.

Suddenly, one of my iPhoto Libraries will not open, or rather iPhoto opens, but says there are no photos in the file. However, when I backed it up and looked into it otherwise, the images 86gigs are still there in the file. What to do??

To move from iPhoto 08 (which is v7) to iPhoto 11 (which is v9) requires that you purchase iPhoto 11. Your software update is running just fine. V7.1.5 is last version of iPhoto 08.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
As to the problematic library:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/">iPhoto Library Manager</a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

Ok, here is what I have so far. Appdelete the iWork and reinstalled. Pages and Number work, but not Keynote.
Now, I downloaded a couple apps that I need, and no matter what I did, the spinning ball came up and the download stopped till it unlocked itself. It is really frustrating because the download was not completed and whatever came through would not mount. Could this issue be the internet connection? Permission fix showed a lot of Airport issues. Hey Sierra, You can do just what you have stated. My question, what is your "other"? If it is over 1.5 GB you most likely have corrupt files. Doing a Restore to New, Factory restore should correct it. Just make sure you make a full backup of all information on your iPod to your computer before you restore, so you don't lose your stuff, contacts, videos, pictures, non-iTunes music, etc, use the cable and connect with your computer. Then, via cable, connect to your computer, run the Restore to new, don't use your backup. Treat this iPod as if it was your first one ever. When restore is done, set up and add what info you wish to install on this iPod. The music apps etc you purchased should be on your computer, if not you should be able to retrieve purchased apps and music from iTunes. Any music, videos, apps not purchased from iTunes will be lost to you if you do not save them to your computer or the cloud first. When your done, make a current Backup and you should good to go. Why when i convert to black and white and change, contrast, exposure etc and get it right in preview i open it and its brighter and looks different to the preview?

The images also look different in preview and when i upload them to adobe Revel but when i put them back in photoshop they look Ok.

I convert, in raw to black and white and add sharpness and clarity theirs and a few other options Temp etc if need be. Then i open them into photo shop as black and white. There i place around with the exposure setting but as you do it you have the preview button clicked so you see what the finished photo will look like. When i hit change normally the photo changes and looks like it was in the preview.But now with out changing any settings in photoshop, as i change the photo the preview is different when i click ok to make the changes. This comes and goes in photoshop and its getting a bit frustrating as i do a lot of black and white photos and have been doing for years but i am having this problem over the last 6 months.
No i haven't changed colour settings i have photoshop on the preset settings.
'Preview" when you are changing contrast etc their is the preview option so it shows in photoshop what the changes will be. But what i see when i am changing it is different when i open it. make be a point brighter or not as contrasty as i see it as i am changing the settings.

Problems opening and saving PNG over network with CS2 and CS3

I've recently tried to save images in PNG format, small (no more than a couple hundred kilobytes) and found that whenever I tried to save to the server it would hang photoshop and require a force-quit. Saving the same file to the desktop works fine. Copying said file to the network and then trying to open that PNG from the server results in a photoshop hang, while opening that same file from the desktop works fine. I know all about the fact that Adobe doesn't support working over a server, but that's never been an issue at my workplace in all the years I've worked with (never had problems saving/opening any format, no corrupted files ever). If I try to open that same PNG from the server with CS2, same result. If I try to open it over the server using Photoshop CS, or version 7, however, it opens just fine. If I copy the Photoshop CS version of the PNG plugin and replace the PNG plugin installed with CS3 by default, then it seems to work and I can now open and save PNGs anywhere with no problems. Has anyone else had this problem? I can see that the file size of the PNG plugin has changed version to version, so something about it has changed. It seems as though there is something defective about the ones installed with CS2/3, and just copying the CS version into my CS3 folder clears up the problem.
Also, the problem is not limited to my computer. Other macs that try to open PNG files from the server using CS3 or 2 also hang.

Yes, we're a prepress company moving around probably a few dozen gb of data per day, saving PSD, TIFF, EPS, JPEG, all kinds of formats. It's the first time I've had a client requesting PNG files, and so the issue has come to light. This is the first time I've ever seen any kind of issue opening/saving across our network in 8 years. (the only time I've ever seen a corrupt file was a 1.6gb image that didn't copy correctly, and that wasn't a photoshop-related corruption, but an OS drag/copy of the file)
I'm not sure if I'll be able to find someone with OS 10.5 or some other version to see if they cause problems. If anyone else reading this who works over a network can test a PNG open/save over their network and list their OS and Photoshop version it may help. I'm going to see if I can find some other computers to try it out on in the meantime and mention it to IT.
