PNG8 exports - removing ugly white/black outlines?

Hello Photoshop friends,
so I have a PSD with layers. I run an export script to export all layers as PNG8 because I want to preserve transparency. The file size with PNG24 however is far too big for the web although supporting alpha transparency. Upon export, I get an ugly white line stroked around every image. In my export script, I don't have the option to fix the matte colour of the export image to the BG colour of the webpage so I'm wondering if there's any way to automatically or manually remove this transparency area which renders fine under PNG24 but poorly under PNG8 and GIF formats? Anyone have any experience with dealing with this problem?
Thanks.

Ok thanks a lot - that clairfies the matter. Another related issue that you may be able to help with:
I'm running a batch job which produces a PSD with layers at the end that I intend to export as seperate files. At the moment the action calls an export script to produce the PNG8 files. For each batch item I can manually select unique destination folders from the script dialog box. The script isn't that sophisticated, so it doesn't support the matte or transparency switches in the SFW dialog box which, from your advise I now require.
I guess I could cut the export script from the action and replace it with SFW actions with my desired transparency/matte options but then I think I don't have the option to choose a unique destination folder for each item in my batch job. I'm unsure how to hard code the export script to toggle the options that I require. Is there a way to choose unique folders within the SFW dialog box on export for each batch item under this circumstance?

  • Please help -- SHADOWS APPEAR as BLACK OUTLINES when I EXPORT to PDF

    Hi all,
    I have designed a product catalog in InDesign. I retouched product in PS and dropped an "outer glow" and "drop shadow" Layer Style onto the products and saved them with a transparent background in a .PSD format. The files were then Placed into the InDesign document.
    The pages print just as they appear when I print from InDesign, however, I would like to be able to email this document out to retailers, but when I Export as a PDF, the images with shadows appear as if they are stroked with a sloppy/irregular black line in place of the shadows...
    Please help me resolve.
    Could it be due to the compression?
    Thoughts? Alternatives?
    Thanks so much,
    Andrew

    Bob,
    I'm sorry for the delayed reply.
    Here is the catalog I designed.  If you flip through it, you will see that some of the t-shirts have this black outline in place of the "outer glow effect"
    I am using CS3.
    My workflow was this:
    Brought photo into PS > masked out background > deleted selected to Transparent background > Placed graphic in new layer over Tshirt image > Saved file as TIFF > Placed TIFF into InDesign document > Export InDesign document to PDF
    Thoughts?

    Does anyone know how to create a white font with black outline? I need this for a heading that is on a busy background so the title can be read more clearly.

    Nope. You get a transparent letter. Refer to your solution in the above link.

  • Trouble removing black outline box with menubar widget

    I have been tweaking this Spry menubar for weeks trying to iron out the kinks and it has been immensely frustrating!  I get it working in Safari and then the submenus are misaligned in IE.  Also there is a strange black outline which manifests itself as a thin black line in Safari and a large black outline box in IE.  Cannot figure out where that is coming from!
    I think i've made a bit of a mess of it now.  Any suggestions to get it working properly would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

    What you are seeing is a border around the <ul> entity for the submenu. To get rid of it, comment out the CSS in the SpryMenuBarHorizontal.css as follows:
    ul.MenuBarHorizontal ul
    /*     border: 1px solid #000;

  • PDF has strange black outline at printers end?

    Hi all
    I am trying to send a PDF of a book to a printing company in Japan (clients choice!), and I am doing everything I would usually do, supplying with crop marks and bleed.
    When they open the PDF it seems to have cropped many of the pages and put a black outline around it.
    I insert a screen shot (note this is page 7.  Page 6 is NOT white, therefore it has removed the crop on the left side!)
    Any advice gratefully received.  At my end, some of the pages do seem to have a black outline for some reason on my PDF but they fall outside of the crop marks.
    Thanks!

  • When I export to PDF, the black text is printing in full color instead of just black

    I have Pages 09 (version 4.0.5). I am exporting a document to PDF and emailing it to a copy shop for printing. The document has a color cover, and 36 pages of black text inside. The copy shop is telling me that the pages with black text are printing as color pages instead of black and white pages. I need to figure out how to get them to print black to keep costs down. Is this a problem with my file, with the PDF export, or with their print settings?
    Things I've tried...
    1. Using the color palette, I have switched to the color sliders mode and changed all the text to CMYK with 100% black and 0% everything else. I have also tried changing it to grayscale with 0% brightness. Neither of these seemed to have an effect.
    2. I downloaded the trial version of Adobe Acrobat Pro and converted the PDF to grayscale. This worked, but it's only a temporary solution.
    Any other ideas?

    Peter,
    It's a pretty safe assumption that your average Joe isn't using text styles, but in this case you're talking to a guy who has worked as both a prepress technician and a graphic designer in a former life. I just don't have all the software of the trade at this point in my life. If I did, I sure wouldn't be messing with Pages and Preview. Although overall I'm pretty impressed with them, considering what they are.
    Anyway, I am using text styles and I made sure to update them all. The PDF still came out with the rich black color. I have a feeling Pages' PDF exporter automatically converts all black to that four-color rich black on the assumption that you'll want it. I wouldn't care, especially since I'm just printing at a copy shop with no special quality requirements, except that we're printing hundreds of these things every week, and the full color prints more than double the cost.
    Thanks for the help, guys! It looks like filtering the PDF through Preview will do the trick. If anybody can confirm a way to do this directly in Pages, I would appreciate not having to go through the extra steps.

  • Black outlines around images in pdfs from Indesign

    I'm not sure if this is an Indesign problem or Acrobat. I have imported several photoshop files in which I have deleted the background around the figures. The background is transparent. When I make a pdf from Indesign, there is a black outline that appears, tracing the edge of the figures. Does anyone know what might cause this and how to fix. I have imported this kind of file many times with no problems.

    Check if they're RGB in PS. I had this problem recently when exporting to PDF. It didn't show in ID file but showed in PDF. I converted to CMYK, relinked, and exported new PDF and the problem went away.

  • How do I get rid of the white line outlining my tabs in the toolbar?

    Ever since I downloaded the latest version of Firefox, I have this ugly white line slicing through my toolbar and outlining my tabs. I also use Firefox themes so this is extremely annoying to see in my interface. Does anyone know how to get rid of the damned thing? I am also operating on a Mac. Nothing that I find off the Internet about this issue seems to help.

    Hi
    You need to add that following rule to your CSS file:
    body {
    margin: 0;
    padding: 0;
    border: 0;

  • How do I remove the white Padding line atop page?

    Hi folks,
    I made this quick and dirty temporary page for a friend using the blank all black template. For the life of me I don't know how to remove the white line that appears at the top and shows when viewing the page in any browser.
    The line is controlled by Top & Bottom Padding (Inspector-->Pages-->Layout Tab) which I have set to 0 px.
    You can see the page here: http://www.hughesinspections.com

    After a reset, the next steps in user troubleshooting is restore from backup, and then if necessary, restore as new. You can always make a backup of your device, and then try the restore as new. This deletes everything from the device, but will install the iOS. If it works then, go ahead and restore from your backup. If it breaks again, then it has something to do with the backup.

  • Help! Keynote - Trying to add a black outline to a font for readability

    I use a lot of pictures for backgrounds. Often the fonts get very hard to read over the varied colors of the background. Is there a way to outline a font with a black outline so that it is easier to read over picture backgrounds??

    Welcome to the Forum.
    I have tried to do this with minimal success using the Shadow effect with a very small offset and blur. sometimes it will be OK, but not in all situations - especially when the text is over a complex photograph or one with colors similar to the text itself.
    What I have found works better is to use the Shapes menu to create a rectangle that is exactly the same size as the text block, place it behind the text but in front of the picture, and then reduce the Opacity of the rectangle until it is visible just enough to provide definition to the text but not be seen as a "mask." A black rectangle under white or yellow text seems to work best, but you can experiment with other colors to find a combination that is most appropriate for your slides.
    Good luck

  • How do I get a black outline around my shapes?

    Hello I somehow managed to get a black outline around my shapes (as seen in the attachment) which I would like to know how to do. I have no idea how I did this! Can anyone help?

    Lanithu,
    If you mean the black shapes of varying width showing the hand and face, you may start/do it in this way for each:
    1) Create the basic shape (one of the edges) with a stroked path;
    2) Move a copy the desired distance in the desired direction (down to the right for the hand, a bit up to the right for the face);
    3) Adjust Anchor Points as desired (such as (some of) the ones at the mouth);
    4) Select the inner path and Object>Path>Offest Path to create the path for the Path Type, delete unwanted segments (the end segments and the opposite part); you may Type before or after going on with the shapes;
    5) Connect each pair of paths to form closed paths, and reshape the end portions as desired;
    6) Add fill and remove stroke.

  • Macbook Pro 13-inch (10.6.8) random white/black screens and becomes unresponsive...what is wrong/what to do to solve?

    PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS I'M IN NEED OF URGENT HELP. || Heeey everyone! I'm new here. Please don't bite me. =))
    Okay. So I have a Macbook Pro, 13 inch (bought Dec. 2010). It's currently running on Snow Leopard (10.6.8). It had a hard drive crash in Feb. 2012...I had it replaced and lost all my files . It had two major falls (January 2011 & November 2012). Oh, and it also makes this weird grinding noise when you listen closely.
    Everything was going fine, until last week, I encountered a kernel panic. Restarted, but was faced with that awkward blank white screen thing at start up. I was told at the Apple Store back when my hard drive crashed in Feb. 2012 that repeated pressing down of the power button can be damaging, so I waited for it to run out of battery to restart. After that, it was normal again. I downloaded OnyX and verified/repaired permissions...nothing was out of the ordinary.
    THEN. The next day, in the middle of use, my mac suddenly black-screened. Not a lot of windows were open, and I wasn't doing anything that...will put a strain on anything. It wasn't total pitch-black like the screen looks like when it's turned off. I could still hear the hard drive working and making that grinding sound. I pressed the caps-lock key, and it didn't light up. =))) What, is it off or something? But I can still hear the hard drive there. And it's totally unresponsive. So I decided to restart by pressing down the power button. It was normal again...until a few hours later when it suddenly white-screened. OKAY it's white now. I don't know what that's supposed to mean. But it had the same symptoms as the black-screen. Unresponsive, caps-lock didn't light up, normal grinding sound as if the computer was still on. So I let it run out of battery so I could restart. Upon restarting, I opened Disk Utility and verified disk permissions. There was no damage, nothing again.
    I recently got uTorrent (around late December), and thought that it might have been that, so I deleted it and emptied trash. The next day, it did the black screen again. Same with the next day. There's at least one per day. It didn't seem to affect performance at all, everything still ran smoothly. I made sure to check disk permissions to see if everything was okay. And everything was.
    Then, about three days passed without any black/white screen and I thought that nuisance was over. BUT NO. Two days ago, I got black-white-white screened and I was...shocked. I let it run out of battery again. =))) Checked Disk Utility, again, nothing. So I decided to get that Software Update thingo that always pops up. I upgraded to 10.6.8. A day passed without the dreaded black/white screens. But yesterday, it white screened once. And today, it white screened again.
    I really can't figure out a concrete pattern. It seems random. But what I do know is that:
    1. It happens in the afternoon. All the time, consistently in the afternoon. LOOOL IDK what this is supposed to mean, but its one of the common factors. =))
    2. Most of the time, it happens when I leave the computer for about 30 seconds - 1 minute to get something. Or if I'm watching a long video (like a TV show episode), a period of time where I don't touch the mouse/press any keys. Is that related somehow?
    3. I can't do anything to get it out of the white/black screen except restart. Each time I restart, I check Disk Utility and nothing is wrong.
    And yes, I've went to the Apple Store to get this checked. All they said is: "Upgrade to Lion, maybe the error will disappear. If it does, then it was just a software error. If it doesn't...then sorry." LOOOOOOL NOT FALLING FOR THAT, not spending money when I'm not sure it'll fix the error. I want concrete answers.
    I'm a student, and my Christmas Break will be over in less than a week. SO I NEED ALL THE HELP IN THE WORLD PLEASE. What is wrong with my laptop? Can I fix this? Will opening it in safe mode help in any way? PLEASE I'M DESPERATE.

    Try these:
    See what's loading in your login items. - delete the ones you don't need.
    Open up Activity Monitor and under all processes, see what's using most of your cpu's resources.  Highlight the ones using the most % CPU and hit quit process.
    Next, open up disk utility and verify your disk.  Once that's done, verify disk permissions - repair if needed.
    Restart your Macbook and see if it speeds things up for you.
    good luck....
