Podcast downloads as MPEG, but stored as AAC?

Hi there,
I have encountered a strange issue when downloading certain podcasts from iTunes. The Podcasts in question are available for free on iTunes Podcasts and are available from 'MINUS Connections'. I'm not sure if this is a problem with my iTunes setup, a bug in iTunes, or the way in which the Podcast has been encoded. Nevertheless, here is the issue -
I download a Podcast from Minus Connections i.e. Minus Connection June '09 - Hearthrob
The Podcast shows as being of MPEG format while it is downloading
Once the Podcast has downloaded, it now displays as AAC format.
The Podcast plays in iTunes OK. However, in my own iPhone app, which reads an audio file and converts it to Linear PCM, it fails to read \ convert it.
My suspicion is that the file cant be read, because I am attempting to read it as AAC, when in fact it is actually an MPEG file?
So for some reason, at some point, the file kind has changed from MPEG to AAC, which is incorrent i think?
Interestingly, if I right click on the file in iTunes, and select 'Create AAC Version', it allows me to create an AAC version, which can be played OK on my iPhone app. I dont think the actual audio file format cant be read, I think it cant be read because the format type changes to the wrong type.
Has anyone encountered anything similar?
Many thanks,
David

MPEG-4 (.m4a) is AAC. There's nothing odd in iTunes or QuickTime player about the file for the most recent episode. I don't have an iPhone so I can't say what the problem is: a similar problem was traced to the embedded image being too large for the iPhone, but it's 600x600 here and it doesn't look as if the Chapter image is any larger, so that presumably isn't the problem - however using the 'convert to AAC' option removed the Chapter image (the playlist) though not the embedded image, so that may be the issue. You could ask in the iPhone Forum.

Hi I Have an Ipod classic. My problem is that the Ipod seems to sync music ok but I have a number of podcasts downloaded to itunes but these don't sync to the ipod,(they have in the past, but no longer). Has anyone any suggestions please ?

    hi gary
have you tried to sync your ipod ,when you click on the side where it shows your ipod?
Click on where it shows your ipod name for example garys ipod, when it opens up the summary page click the sync box, bottom right, and see if that helps.
In the summary page click on podcasts, click the box on sync podcast box (top),read before when the box opens and says are you sure you want sync podcasts.,theres a box underneath, which says automatically include ,make sure thats ticked.
    hope this may help madforit

  • I downloaded a ringtone, but it is stored in songs.  Can I move it to ringtones to set as default?

I downloaded a ringtone, but it is stored in songs.  Can I move it to ringtones to set as default?

I don't know what happened that the ringtone didn't go in the proper directory, but a ringtone is simply a short song. The distinguishing characteristics of a ringtone are that they are short (<30 seconds), AAC-formated music, with a file-suffix '.m4r'. If the ringtone's filename ends with '.m4a' or '.mp4', then that's probably why it went into the wrong folder (though, if you bought the ringtone in iTunes, that shouldn't happen). Anyway, the fix is simple.
Plug in your phone and start iTunes.
Drag the ringtone to the from iTunes to the Desktop.
If you can't see the file extension, show it (on Windows you need to change the view settings, on a Mac you select the file and do Get Info on it and uncheck the 'Hide Extension' box in the file info panel).
Change the file extension to '.m4r'.
Drag the file back into iTunes (onto the phone icon in the sidebar).
    That's it.
Incidentally, there's nothing special about the ringtone format. You can capture sound, or edit tracks in GarageBand or QuickTime, save them as MP4 audio, and alter the file suffix and you have yourself a ringtone.

    Hi Frank,
Thanks for the response. I've consulted with our server guy and he says that there are no read/write privileges. Jdev is not on the server.
I'm really stumped by this so if you have any ideas, I'd really appreciate it.

  • Yesterday I could not download my podcasts, then I happened to download to version 5.1 and then podcasts downloaded, BUT my music had no sound ! Today, I RESET my IPOD and got music with sound, but now cannot download my podcasts anymore. What is going on

Yesterday I could not download my podcasts (they were just hanging in the download page). Then after trying many things, I updated to version 5.1 and then could get my podcast downloads.  BUT then I could not get any SOUND to my music only.  So I RESET my IPOD touch this morning and the music sound worked , but then could NOT get my podcast to download again !  What happened?

I figured out it was a SPECIFIC PODCAST that would not download. My other podcasts did download.  Missymae

  • I downloaded several podcasts from On Being but I cannot find most of them on the display.  Where did they go?  How can I retrieve them?

I downloaded several podcasts from On Being but I can only see four  or five of them when I touch podcasts.  When I check back on the subscription to On Being, I see all the podcasts checked off that I downloaded.  Why are they not on the display so I can play them?  How do I retrieve  them?  When I go back to the subcription list, the items do not allow for download again (ie. there is not "get").
I have an iPod Nano that I just bought last month.  The user manual give mostly info on songs and little useful info on podcasts.

  • I use podcasts all the time but downloaded my first books from the istore this morning. how do I get them to my ipod?

I use podcasts all the time but downloaded my first books from the istore this morning, I can't get them synced onto my ipod. What am I doing wrong?

the audiobooks I purchased show up in itunes under books and under purchased items but i cannot make them sync to my ipod. I followed your directions but it did not help. I have drag and dropped to a playlist which shows up on itunes but not on my ipod even after repeated syncs. when I try to drag and drop to the books or audiobooks in the itunes list it gives me the NO symbol.

  • Podcasts download but do not show in "Podcasts" on iPod

My podcasts download properly into iTunes but I can't find them on my iPod. I thought I found the solution by manually copying them to the Podcasts folder, but that no longer works. This always used to work automatically but lately does not (new version of iTunes problem?).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, as I said ive spent hours looking for answer and I think I might have it. My issue is a video podcast not syncing. I find now that some do sync and others dont. I find the problem lies with videos not being compatible with my 80g classic ipod. I used to get warnings, now I dont probably because I clicked the 'dont show this warning again' button or due to a software upgrade is just didnt show up one day. Anyway if you go to page 16 of this discussion down the bottom in a thread started by 'lynnhopes' the answer there is all about resetting warnings. I re-set my warnings and it showed me a warning saying the podcast i was trying to download is not compatible with my ipod. Question is - is there anything on settings which CAN make it compatible???

  • HT1660 I have downloaded two podcasts from ABC radio, but I can't find them?

I am a very new user of iPad, only a couple of days. I have downloaded podcasts from ABC radio but can't find them, any ideas?

Since you've posted your question in iTunes forum, I assume you have downloaded these Podcasts into iTunes and that you cannot find them in iTunes. Is that correct?
    How did you download them?
Did you download them through iTunes as Podcasts? You would have seen them appear in the iTunes Download window.
Or did you download them directly from the ABC website, as MP3 files to a folder on your computer?
