Podcast "played" identifier reset everytime I connect my ipod to computer

In the podcast section of your ipod, there is a little mark next to each of the podcasts that you have not yet listened to. Everytime I connect my ipod to my computer, all of these are reset.
So, if I've listened to half of the podcasts on my ipod, then connect the ipod to my computer to transfer a song, then disconnect it - all of the podcasts are again showing as unplayed. This is extremely annoying and makes it very hard to keep up with all of the podcasts, because I don't know which episodes I've already listened to without going into each one and jumping around until I recognize a part.
I've already reinstalled itunes, upgraded itunes, reloaded the ipod using the ipod installer, and updated the ipod - no luck.
What gives?

Yeah, I have this problem, it comes and goes. Not only me, but a couple of people in this forum - but this problem has NEVER been answered. Dunno why.

  • Hi there, I have a problem with my iPod Classic (from 2009). Everytime I connect it to my computer (Windows), iTunes does not work anymore. Music is automatically deleted on my iPod. Any suggestions please?

Hi there, I have a problem with my iPod Classic (from 2009). Everytime I connect it to my computer (Windows), iTunes does not work anymore. Music is automatically deleted on my iPod. Any suggestions please?

Thanks, for info, iPod Classic is a slower machine compared the Nano, unfortunately, if you read these discussions, majority of the freezes involved iTunes 10. Although if might be just slow and some impatient user just disconnect the iPod ands cause more problems. ( Yes I also did that but safely by doing a iPod Hard Reset, before disconnecting).
Here is the Apple support article that may help you.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717
or my usual solution for Windows Users.
Antivirus has a tendency to freeze iTunes sync Operation with iPod Classic, causing a timeout, which corrupt your iPod filesystem, so when iTunes can't read the iPod, it is pointing to this problem. Other causes is when your iPod hardisk is dying, or your battery is dying causing hardisk crashes.
    My suggestion.
Connect your iPod to the PC and run chkdsk, to fix any iPod diskerror, then disconnect it, after chkdsk complete.
Disconnect your PC from Internet. (just to make sure no nasties creep into your system while you syncing.
    Stop the Antivirus program
Connect your iPod to the PC, using a high speed USB 2.0 port at the back of your PC, do not use any USB Hub.
When iTunes Open up, Restore your iPod please, this is for iTunes to map correctly, to fix the corrupted filesystem.
When Restore complete, eject the iPod and reconnect again.
Sync your ipod, preferably manually Manage in small batches and disconnect after every batch, to check that all is well.
When all sync is complete, and iPod disconnected, start back your Antivirus and connect back the Internet.
    Good Luck!

  • My ipod is not being recognised when i connect it to my computer and itunes crashes everytime i connect my ipod. Suggestions please?

I'm having problems with my ipod. Everytime I connect it to my computer, itunes crashes and it says that the device is not recognised. Any suggestions pleeease?

HI, if anyone can help, I appreciate it, I tried to
return it but lost the receipt and I bought it a week
ago so that kinda stings. Ok my PC froze today like
it did a million times before and I had to restore
it, after I restored it I tried to hooki up my ipod
and it said usb device not reconized. When I clicked
on that it said device is not reconized by windows. I
tried different usb ports and the same thing keeps
happening, but the ipod works when I hook it up to my
360 and all my songs are still on there. I also tried
re installing itunes and that didn't work either. If
anyone knows what I can do please help. Thanks.
I just got home from my dad's house and my ipod works fine on his PC, so I thought maybe my usb ports are faulty but all my other devices work on all my ports, the only thing that dosent work is my pod, so my pc isn't busted. If anyone knows what I can do please let me know, thanks for the help.

I haven't researched it and I don't claim to know everything about iTunes, but it has always been my understanding that you can only use one computer per iPod, but you can have multiple iPods per computer. From what I understand, this is to prevent illegal sharing and whatnot.

From the link at the bottom of my post:
Error 23, 28, 29: These errors may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow the steps in this article. Also attempt to restore while connected with the white USB Dock Connector cable that shipped with your device, on a known good computer and network to isolate this issue to the device. The MAC address being missing or the IMEI being the default value, (00 499901 064000 0), can also confirm a hardware issue. Out-of-date or incorrectly configured security software can also cause these errors

I would do what the article and if unsuccessful make an appointment at the Genius bar of an Apple store since you likely have a hardware problem.

  • Problems with connecting my ipod to computer

Please, i need help. I had my ipod and itunes running fine on a windows xp computer service pack 2 and last weekend i got a new computer. However, i simply transferred my old hardrives into the new computer. The only thing that changed was the letter of the drive. Instead of being E: drive it is now an F: drive.
The problem i am having is that i get an error message everytime i connect my ipod to the new computer and load up itunes It says "the software required for communicating with the ipod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall itunes..."
So when i try to reinstall itunes i get error 1324 "the path ipod updater 20006-06-28 contains an invalid character."
I've tried downloading itunes from the website and when it tries to install i get "ipodservice.resources is not a valid short file name."
So, i can't uninstall itunes or ipod, i've cleaned up my computer for any remnants of files in the system, and i've checked the registry to make sure no files were still being directed towards the E: drive.
Itunes right now works fine. The only problem is that my ipod doesn't update any music or properly connect with itunes.
I've run out of options and need help. Also, if there is a better forum to post this in please tell me. thanks.

    Hello drkhntrss,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Maybe trying reassigning your iPod's drive letter as described in this Apple support document and see if that helps.

  • Podcast play count reset when syncing multiple devices

I have noticed some odd behavior since upgrading iTunes to version 10. My wife and I each have an iPhone, iPad, and an iPod nano. I have several playlists that I sync to each of my devices. The problem comes when I play some podcasts on one device, and other podcasts on another device. I sync one device, the play count updates. I sync one of the other devices, and the play count updates on some songs, but is deleted on others. I can tell which tracks have been reset because they still have a Last Played Date. It appears that the device with the most advanced time overwrites the play count in the library.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this behavior?
    Doc

After much faffing, I have finally found out what to do. I've been stupid. Or maybe the whole sync thing isn't clear or intuitive, but probably I've been stupid.
I'm posting this because I couldn't find a definitive answer anywhere and because lots of people had similar questions to me.
The following settings work as I would expect them to. That is:
    1. I have all my iTunes content on my iPod touch (not just some tracks, but all 8186 of them)
    2. When I rate a track on the iPod, I expect that rating to copy into iTunes when I sync
    3. I don't expect all 8186 songs to be wiped from my iPod and replaced again every time I sync; i.e. I only want any new ratings/artwork/tracks in iTunes to be duplicated on my iPod
So, here are my settings which work for me, at least:
    1. In *iTunes Preferences*, on the Devices tab, *Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically* is unchecked
    2. When the iPod is connected to my Mac, when clicking the iPod in the sidebar;
    a) on the Summary tab, *Open iTunes when this iPod is attached* is unchecked
(I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but I usually already have iTunes open when connecting the iPod)
    b) on the Music tab, *Sync Music:* and *Entire music library* are checked
    3. I then click Sync at the bottom of that tab and, lo and behold, everything syncs properly.
Prior to this, I did have to go through that tedious process of having everything removed from the iPod and replaced, but it seems that that was a one-off chore and now things seem OK.
If you're syncing Apps, Calendar, Contacts, etc. too, then those settings can be checked in the Applications and Info tabs and that seems to function properly as well.
This may seem basic and obvious to some, but there does appear to be a lot of confused folks out there!

  • Everytime I connect my iPod to USB, iTunes says the following: This iPod cannot be used because the required software is not installed.  Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64-bit version of iTunes.

I have the latest 64-bit version of iTunes on Windows 7 Ultimate.  Everything was fine until recently.  Now when I connect my iPod Touch to the USB to sync with iTunes, I get the following message:  "This iPod cannot be used because the required software is not installed.  Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64-bit version of iTunes"  I have removed, repaired, and installed the 64-bit version numerous times as well as disabled all antivirus / adware utilities.  Same message appears when I plug in my iPod.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you try removing and reinstalling all the Apple software using these instructions:
