Podcast Producer for lecture capture with Kaltura

I am a relatively new employee at a university and I am helping the school set up a lecture capture system. I've researched several options already and this idea of useing Podcast Producer with an Apple Server we already have and Kaltura to host and manage our media which we already have I'm having trouble finding solid info about.
Background about me: I have a video background, very limited with servers and scripts. I know enough to understand what's what. I'm trying to work with the guy who setup the server too.
Alright, now what I'd like to see happen:
We already have an Apple server and a room with recording hardware (camera, screen capture ability, document camera, etc) already. We use Blackboard for our course management system and Kaltura for our media management. We're pursuing Kaltura's Blackboard building block, but haven't gotten there yet. I know Podcast Producer is capable of sending the recorded podcasts elsewhere, but my knowledge of what is possible with that is very limited. I'd like to see a lecture recorded with the Podcast Producer, then sent to a category on Kaltura or the appropriate course within Blackboard from the Apple server.
I have already asked this on Kaltura's forums and awaiting a response but figured since this also involved an Apple product, it wouldn't hurt to inquire about any knowledge here. And I know a lot of this depends on what Kaltura is capable of as well. Thanks in advance.

Bad form, but I am going to respond to my own question here with a possible solution. I'm doing this for others who may be stuck on the same thing.
It looks like a solution would be to create a Folder Action on the directory that the raw video files will be uploaded to. This would be an AppleScript that will run the podcast (see 'man podcast') command line tool to manually submit the files to the Podcast Server workflow.

  • Long encoding times for footage captured with BMD H.264 Pro Recorder

    Hi there,
I'm experiencing very long render times when encoding footage captured with the BMD H.264 Pro Recorder. Watching it encode (either through Premiere CS6, or AME) it looks like the encoding stops for periods of time. With other footage I can encode a 50 minute project in about 15-20 minutes, encoding with footage from the Pro Recorder is almost 1:1 in terms of project length/encode time.
The Pro Recorder uses QuickTime for H.264 captures, so don't know if that is causing issues. Don't seem to have the same issue with other H.264 formats.
    System Info:
    Windows 8 Enterprise (RTM)
HP Z820 with dual hexcore processors, 32GB RAM
Quadro 2000 plus Tesla for Maximus configuration
All latest updates have been installed (yesterday)
    MPE is enabled for project
Also tested on a Z800 with Windows 7 and got same results
Editing the footage is fast and playback through timeline looks great. Anyone have a suggestion?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

QuickTime is still a 32 bit process and the 64 bit PP has to use a sort of "band-aid" to make QuickTime files work right.  It's possible that might slow things down.

  • Streaming isight to desktop, for conference capture with picture collage

I need to live stream my isight to my desktop so I can insert it into another application which will be sent out on a live stream chat. How do I do it.
I am trying to send a collage of <5-10 pictures, and a life video of my self taken with my isight camera> to be captured as part of a video conference with my voice. During the conference I will be adding pictures, resizing them and moving them around in a program screen such as I-web with a blank white background. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to best do this.
Which programs would be best to capture the isight video to my desktop with out any (or to much extra stuff around the video), and to assemble a collage in with the video and other pictures.
I have been looking for a conferencing program which lets me do this for broadcasting to a larger size group and only find Adobe Connect which can do all this at an extremely high price tag. My second option is to broadcast a program or screen capture which gives me the freedom to create and manipulate my contents live.
Any ideas how one can best do this. I can email a copy of a sample page taken off adobe if you do not totally understand.

"this" = wirecast looks PERFECT, Yeah!!! . I will try it out and get back to you and let you know how it works.
From what I understand about wire cast with Darwin, I can broadcast it direct from my laptop, is that correct or do I still need an independent osx server. Can I broadcast it live to a page on my web site which has a chat built into it so that people can participate in the chat while watching the live stream?
This all looks too perfect, I am looking forward to trying it out tomorrow.
    thanks

  • Podcast Producer Yosemite

Used to use Podcast Maker app for Mac. Was awesome. Best thing for working with Podcast quickly, easily. With Yosemite for sure, this app is useless. And the xml was beginning to not be up to snuff. I know there is a podcast producer for server, but is there something for us to create and manage our podcasts for Mac? Help? Thanks.

Podcast Producer is part of Mac OSX Server and you should ask about it in the OSX Server forum:
    OS X Server
For normal OSX there isn't a lot of choice of applications as such. Podcast Maker hasn't been updated for years and I suspect it won't work on Yosemite. Wordpress is used by some people and causes more problems than all the other methods put together. There are various free and paid-for online methods, most of which don't allow you direct access to the feed. Libsyn is a paid-for online method with good support; Blogger and other free methods can work but if you have problems you're on your own.

  • PodCast Producer - adding character to names on folder copy

PodCast Producer -the greatest capture/render/post product in the World! But when I add to my workflow the function to copy to another folder, PCP adds "+" characters where there where once spaces in the name. Can anyone give me a magic sudo command or something to fix this? Ideas or help are greatly appreciated.
    Thx.
    Geaux Apple!

If you have it set to copy your music to the iTunes folder, then it will do the same for videos.

  • Why can't I find Podcast Producer under Share in the latest version of FCPX?

We had our Wiki/blog server set up to publish videos directly to Podcast Producer from FCPX?  This summer we upgraded the server to Lion and updated FCPX and the "Podcast Producer" option is gone from the "Share" menu.
Why would they do this?  What is a good option for us at this point for sending videos to Podcast Producer (for our Wiki/Blog server)?

Because Audiobooks are not included in icloud.  The audiobook industry does not allow this.

  • Using Podcast Capture with a mobile me feed?

Hi, I have a mobile me account with about 5 gb in memory. I was wondering if I could use podcast capture (snow leopard 10.6.2) and use my idisk in mobile me as my feed/ server to connect to. I will eventually be publishing my podcast to Itunes and I am trying to figure out how to either get a free onlien server or use mobile me... Is there anyway to do this? If not what solutions do you recommend thanks, cmacintosh

Podcast Capture needs to work in conjunction with Mac OSX Server and Podcast Producer: as I understand it, it's not intended for the ordinary OSX.

On the general subject of podcasting, you may find this page helpful in giving you some background:

My recommendation would be to use Podcast Maker, which works seamlessly with your iDisk. Please see my answer in this thread:

  • Looking for: Promo Movies of Podcast Producer--- slick demo's

Why can't I find any actual video podcasts of Podcast Producer? Is it too new? Does someone have to capture a capture with another tool? (...like an iShowU capture of how to use Snapz Pro...)
I want to show a video clip to demo this to my boss. Something to show the aspects of this being a great centralizing database for creating and publishing online video training movies... but she ain't going to get that from a one-page blurb on the Apple site's Leopard Server page.
Anyone? Links to actual movies about Podcast Producer?

The OS X 10.7 servers we installed didn't have it and Apple support told us it wasn't included.  But we could migrate it from older 10.6 and 10.5 servers to run it.  But it won't run on 10.8 at all now.

  • Podcast Producer with SSLed Web Service

So, I'd like to configure the Web service in OS X to only use SSL. Are there any modifications that I will need to make to my Podcast Producer configuration? Currently, I do have Podcast Producer configured and working, but when I enable SSL in the Web Service, I am no longer able to submit new podcasts successfully from Podcast Capture. It does say that it was submitted successfully, but no email is sent and no new podcast appears in the blog. What extra settings will I need to make

    Bonjour Phillippe, Ça va?
Ok, crash course in the fun of PcP.
The XML that PcP generates is based on .plist files that accompany each podcast item. On your server navigate to:
    HD > Library > PodcastProducer > Shared > Content
In this folder you will find date stamped/named folders, each of these contains all the published podcasts for that date. Within you will find folders with very long names ending in '.prb', each of these is a podcast. Within each is a folder 'Contents > Resources > Metadata'. Inside 'Metadata' you will find 'properties.plist' and 'User_metadata-….plist'. These are the two files that PcP uses to generate the XML for the RSS feeds. You can edit these (remember to make sure you have permissions on the file and the containing folder) and change some of the metadata. You will need to sync the library using Terminal to see any changes in the XML though.
Editing these files is particularly useful if you need to change the author of the podcast.
The downside of this is it doesn't allow you to set all the XML elements required by iTunes U, and in particular the Public Site Manager; which is where Feeder comes in.
I've just downloaded all my feeds into Feeder and have started adding additional metadata. I'm then using SFTP to publish the feeds back to the normal webserver (not PcP) on my XServe as static files for import into iTunes U.
Once I have all my feeds re-imported into iTunes U, I'll then be able to make the move to Public Site Manager.
I know this is not the easiest or most user friendly of processes, I hope it will only be a stop-gap solution until OS X 10.7; but until then I know of no better way to do the job.
    I hope this helps.

  • Is Podcast Producer ready for primetime?

Has anyone gotten Podcast Producer to work consistently? I only had it work once yesterday for one Blog. After that I was not able to connect to the server from Podcast Capture. Kept on getting an error related to unknown username or password. Even logged into the podcast server I couldn't access either the pcastadmin or pcastuser. Tried to delete the users and start over again. Still no success. Wiped the computer and started over again, I setup everything needed. Xgrid would only show its own controller and agent on the Podcast Producer Server. The agents showed they are connected to the XGrid in the XGrid system preference. Since 10.5 Server came out I have installed and tried to configure Podcast Producer at least 9 times. Finally this morning it would upload the video but it never went anywhere. The logs only showed that there were some permission errors on the external storage that is being used for sharing.
As most Mac software is not that hard to setup or use, Podcast Producer would seem to be that easy also. But I am disappointed that I am having this much problems with it. I guess we are going to have to wait until it is more mature before trying to use it in a production setting.

I did not have any of these issues.
I used a Workgroup setup with augmented OD records and then started using server admin to set up Podcast Producer. I followed the setup instruction in the manual step by step (including the dns server entry they suggest and using kerberos etc.) and it worked.
Once starting using it I encountered serveral(*) problems, but overall it is working.
1: Podcast Producer cannot upload to Wikis hosted on https://
2: Serveral Problems with sizes of the Intro and exit movie
3: Encodings cannot be changes due to lack of a tool for it
4: Using large video files (>20 Gb) brings arbitrary workflow failures
5: The encoding step (transforming in final video format) does not scale (cpus)
    6: etc....

  • Lion Server just for Podcast Producer?

I know nothing about servers and such, but am starting a video podcast for our small tribal college to teach our language and culture. I have a new iMac and Lion and use Final Cut Pro X.
Can I install Lion Server just for Podcast Producer and ignore all the other stuff with it? Does PCProducer work well? And does it work well with video?
Thank you for any and all advice or input.

    Correct.

Oh...... so if I read this right.... the total cost for setting up a Lion Server is $29 for Lion + $49 for the server tools.... so $88 total....

  • What is the best software to use for screen capture on a PC for use with FCPX?

What is the best software to use for screen capture on a PC (windows 7) for use with FCPX? I've tried Camtasia and camstudio however the avi files cannot be imported by FCPX and the mov files produced by these programs are shown as just black screens in FCPX.

I use to face this issue every now and then (as a freelancer) when I use to cut on FCP7.
if the material is DV and was captured using Sony VEGAS, Premiere or Edius, the footage generally worked fine. You'll find most people will tell you to convert it regardless, however I found no issues working with them.
A problem you'll definitely face is HDV material. Most PC editing software write HDV in their own codec, which can't be read in FCP.
The only thing I can think of is to try converting HDV meaterial to QuickTime using something like MPEG Streamclip, or something similar.
    Good luck

  • SMTP Settings for Podcast Producer

Recently our University changed email providers, which required us to change settings on our devices.  I updated the SMTP settings in Podcast Producer to reflect the new service, however I am no longer receiving the administrator emails whenever XGrid starts or starts a job.
Here's the rub... the user notification emails are working fine using the same SMTP settings.  Is there somewhere else that SMTP settings are stored in Podcast Producer that I missed?  I am able to ping the SMTP server fine with no problems.

  • Hinting for Streaming w/ Podcast Producer

Can I hint movies for streaming with a Podcast Producer 2 workflow. We have upgraded our Xserve from 10.5 to 10.6 and we are utilizing the QTTS to serve up our movie files to customers and employees. Our files produced by Podcast Producer need to be hinted. How is this accomplished? I don't see an option in Podcast Composer during workflow creation.

I confess I do not know Podcast Producer 2 as much as I'd like. I do know that it maintains a catalog of content that is published through RSS and Atom feeds. In principle, it should be possible to create a tool that would delete content and kill any feed entries linked to it. Such a tool would have to understand both SQLite3 and XML. I don't "think" there is such a tool…it might be interesting to create one. Anyone who did create a catalog editor would come to understand a lot about how PcP 2 works under the hood.

  • I'm looking for a capture device that is compatible with Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder. I bought elgato but it is not compatible. Anyone know?

I'm looking for a capture device that is compatible with Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder. I bought elgato but it is not compatible. Anyone know?

This is just a shot in the dark....
Do you have all your devices hooked up (and on) when you launch FMLE?  For example -- your camera or digitizer?  When FMLE launches it will try to launch with the last known settings... including input devices.  If it can't find these devices (they're not hooked up and on) it can crash, although in most situations it will simply show a default screen with default settings.
If you do have your equipment hooked up (and on) when you launch FMLE, try unplugging them and then launching FMLE so that it opens up in default configuration mode (no input devices selected; all default settings).  Then uncheck the "preview" boxes for both your input and output preview windows.  Close FMLE and then plug in your equipment (and turn it on) and relaunch FMLE.  I offer this suggestion as FMLE can sometimes act funny when the preview windows are open with certain types of input devices.  Don't worry -- you don't have to keep the preview windows off forever.  If you can get FMLE to successfully launch with the preview windows off, then you can set your settings however you like and save the profile.  Then quit and relaunch FMLE and then turn the preview windows back on and see if it works.  If it does, great.  Just be aware that making any settings changes while the preview windows are open could result in FMLE crashing.   Again -- this only happens with some capture devices, such as certain Dazzle capture boxes.
If none of this works, you could always try to upgrade to FMLE 3.2 and see if that solves your problem.
