Podcast Smart Playlist Problems (Disregard - Problem solved)

Problems solved. Is it possible to delete the post?

Reagrding tracks being copied over again, I've seen another post in iPod Lounge where that person indicated the same thing. He stated that the play count was not being updated between the iPod and iTunes, but that the tracks were being copied over again. This sounds like a good explanation of this problem.
I have now noticed many of the tracks which I know I have played in the past show a "0" play count. Are the play counts kept in the iTunes library files (iTunes.xml and iTunes.itl)?
I always save the library files, so that when I reinstall iTunes I can just copy these 2 files back to their proper locations and I have my entire library intact - playlists and all. My music library is on a different drive.
Anyway, I KNOW I have played these tracks on the iPod, and yet they show unplayed on iTunes. This is probably another symptom of the re-copying tracks problem.

  • Smart Playlist Song Order Problem on iPod Nano 6th G

recently i got an iPod Nano 6th G after years of using my iPod Classic 5.5G, and so far it has been a bliss actually if it wasnt for one small thing
i have a somewhat large collection of music that i have - with a few exceptions - put in one big smart playlist with the rules provided in the pic to fit my needs
on my old iPod Classic when i sync it i find it in the ipod in the same ordered that shows on my iTunes, but with my iPod Nano that is no longer the case.... even the the same playlist in my iPod have the songs in the exact order as it is in my library on iTunes, once i unblug it the play list on iPod becomes arranged alphabetically by artist and obviousely that is my problem
so if anyone could guid me to correct it or even the cause of it i'ld be very thankful

Can someone point me to a forum somewhere where I can get help with this? I'm obviously posting to the wrong place. Thanks!

  • Smart Playlist "My Rating" problem

I rather new to iTunes so please forgive me if this is a noob question. I just tried to create a smart playlist and my 2nd condition is "My Rating". However the 3rd field, which is where I imagine I should be able to put the number of stars, is a white box with a large black bar in it. I can't set or change the number of stars the rating should be. I can post a pic if needed. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks!
    -Adam R.

Thanks for the tip, you were right.
I switched my screen refresh rate from 40Hz to 50Hz. The black bar went away and the stars showed properly. Switched the refresh rate back to 40Hz, still saw stars and no black bar.
So it appears that any tweaking of graphics options causes iTunes to shake itself out of its stupor and display stars properly.
    Strange iTunes bug.
By the way, I'd never had this problem until I upgraded to iTunes 7.4.3.1 today.

  • ITunes 6.0.1.3 smart playlist and rating problem

I noticed my iPod playlists don't update live anymore, so I checked their settings in iTunes and found that, for some reason, there are no stars listed in the smart playlist.
I deleted them all and tried to start fresh. I click File > New Smart Playlist. In the first combo box I choose "My Rating", in the second combo box I choose "is", and in the third field, I can't do anything--not even click to set a rating. It's just blank.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Okay, apparently the stars are still there, I just can't see them. If I click where the 5th star should be, then it adds songs rated with 5 stars.
I do see the stars in the regular library listing. Why can't I see them in the smart playlist?
This doesn't explain why my iPod doesn't do live updating anymore. Hmm.

  • Can't sync my podcast smart playlist(s) to my ipod

I created a smart playlist to hold my podcasts, which would sync to my ipod when I was using the previous version of itunes, but after installing itunes 9 I can no longer get that playlist to sync to my ipod. I have tried both unplugging and replugging back in my ipod as well as restore factory settings and reloading everything back onto the ipod, still no luck. Does anyone know how I can solve this or if there will be a patch for itunes 9 to resolve this as well as some of the problems experienced with syncing with devices like the apple tv.

Check out this article: http://www.gotknowhow.com/articles/how-to-get-podcast-playlists-to-sync-in-itune s-9.aspx
I was in the same boat and 20 minutes on the phone with an Apple Product Specialist and we figured it out.
Apple changed the sync behavior of iTunes, because what we all have been doing was a workaround for an old bug we didn't recognize as such. We abandoned syncing podcasts using the Podcasts tab because it didn't give us the control that Smart Playlists gave us. We discovered that iTunes would sync our podcast playlists under the music tab.
That was fixed, though I wish it had been covered during the iTunes demo in the Keynote.
Use the Music tab to sync songs and other files you find in your Music library. Use the Podcasts tab to sync podcast episodes you find in your Podcasts library. Both tabs have sections listing all of your playlists. On the Podcasts tab, you may have to scroll to the bottom.
Next, Turn OFF the "Automatically include" option. This is simple syncing. If you want more control, turn this off and select the Smart Playlists you've defined using the bottom section.
I found that all of the playlists I used to sync were still selected in this lower section. As soon as I turned of the "Automatically include" option, everything was back to normal.
FYI, I love having the "Automatically fill free space with songs" option on the music tab. Now as I listen to podcasts and they are removed from the Smart Playlists, I get more music and no wasted space on my device.

  • Bug: iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 podcast smart playlist sort order and how to fix.

There seems to be a bug in iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 involving the sort order of a smart playlist of podcasts. I created such a playlist and sorted by release date on iTunes but I noticed it had a different sort order on the iPod Touch.
After playing around with it a bit I found that the only way to preserve the sort order that I have in iTunes on the iPod Touch is to uncheck "Live Updating" in the smart playlist.

Confirming this incredibly annoying bug.  Basic list sorting not working... real bottom shelf work apple.
workaround update:  limit to must be turned on, set it to an absurdly high number if you don't want to actually limit the playlist, then one of the sortby options in that submenu will work.   The live update checkbox is irrelevant from experimentation.
This workaround does NOT fix the fundamental problem: sort order from itunes in smart playlists is not being synced and preserved in ios5 devices.
This is the latest in a long string of debacles which is making me seriously consider swapping to debian stable. (snow leopard to lion was a severe downgrade in performance for anyone doing heavy multitasking.. scheduling is FUBAR... when a command option escape beachballs on a brand new core 17 machine, your OS has serious problems with nice levels)

  • Podcast Smart Playlist and Live Updating - Fail

    I have a simple smart playlist -
    Media Kind is Podcast
    Plays is 0
    Live Updating ticked
Syncs to iphone no problem but after playing a podcast it is not removed from the list as happens in itunes and my ipod. Does anyone have any ideas ?
    Thanks for any help

    Hello Altor,

  • Podcast Smart Playlist Sync - Fix

If your iPhone and iPad can't sync Smart Playlists:
I figured it out after a few hours in the One-to-One classes where they told me it couldn't be done.
    1. Go to "Edit Smart Playlist".
    2. Turn off "Live Updating".
    3. Go to Device then Podcasts.
    4. Option should show up to "Include Episodes from Playlist".
If "Live Updating" is on then the option to sync the playlist disapears from the device setup.
You just need to manually update the smart playlist every time before you sync it.

I found a potential work around. I am still testing it. Works via usb or wifi sync.
In music, make sure "Entire music library" is not selected. If you want music to sync pick the playlist you want.
In podcast, make sure "automatically include all unplayed" is not selected. You will need to pick select podcast only playlist to sync over.
I am suspecting the music sync is screwing up the smart playlist for podcast when you choose "Entire music library" or "automatically inclue all unplayed" is screwing up the music. Sometimes all my podcast playlist are removed from itunes, other times only a few of them. So by separating the sync out by their individual playlist I haven't had any problems yet, but i am still testing. There could be other unknown variables causing it to happen I haven't discovered.
But if you do find yourself with missing playlist and don't want to painstakingly re make them. Go into your <Previous iTunes Libraries> folder. There should be some previous backups of your past library to restore from.

  • Reorganizing individual items within a podcast smart playlist

With the help of some fine folks from here, I was finally able to create a couple smart playlists on my 5th gen classic iPod, but now I have a new problem: I seem unable to organize the individual podcasts into any playing order. I'd like them to automatically play in order from the earliest downloaded to the most recently downloaded. But no matter what I do in iTunes in the smart playlist itself, once it's synced to my iPod, the playlist is in alphabetical order by artist.
Anybody have any suggestions of how I might correct this? Thanks!

obviously Apple does not consider this a bug...
It's hard to imagine that Apple might not consider it a bug. Personally I chalk it up to the fact that (a) it's a relatively harmless (albeit annoying) bug; and (b) they've got tons of bugs to fix and this one hasn't made it to the top of the list yet. I've added this to my list of bugs to test with every new release (because Apple frustratingly refuses to issue release notes that tells us what bugs have been fixed).
Regardless, their users obviously consider the loss of smart playlist sorting a bug. Please join us in complaining to Apple about this:

  • ITunes Podcasts & Smart Playlists Question

    Hi everyone,
Thanks for taking the time to read my question.
I have a 60gb Colour iPod and have nearly filled it, so do not want to sync any of the podcasts to it. I've disabled Podcast syncing in the options tab after connecting the iPod, but Podcasts are still syncing because I have a large range of Smart Playlists which are set to show me what I added by date. This means they are treating Podcast content as being "Added On" a certain date and hence appearing in the Smart Playlist and being synced.
It is my understanding that to disable this I have to add a clause to the Smart Playlist which says "Kind, Is Not, Podcast" - is this the case? To go through every playlist I have would take ages and can anyone advise if it's possible to apply the same criteria to all playlists? I tried to select more than one by holding down Control or Shift but it didn't work.
Any thoughts would be very gratefully received!
    Cheers,
    Edd

  • Sorting my Podcasts/Smart Playlist

I used to be able to sort my podcasts in a smart playlist, from my highest rating to lowest rating.
I must have done something, but now my podcasts are no longer in the same rated order after syncing to my iPhone.
I know I am doing something wrong cuz I did this before, but cannot figure it out.
    Any help would be appreciated

Smart playlist sorted on Release date still out of order on my touch. How can it not make sense to the Apple people that a serial podcast should be played in order of release date. And multiple related podcasts selected in the same smart playlist should all be played in temporal order. Even filtering on smart lists cannot be based on the release date. IE I want all of the podcasts "RELEASED" in 2008 in a list and I want to play them in temporal order. It is such a no brainer that I cannot believe that I am writing this again for the FOURTH itunes release!! Smart lists?? More like moron lists!!
Seriously regretting recommending apple to friends. WIth this much incompetence they are likely to come out with the latest and greatest new tablet device and forget to put a camera in it.

  • Creative podcast smart playlists

Does anyone have a creative way to make 2 smart playlists. One for daily pod asts and one for the rest of my other podcast. I like to listen to the ones that are downloaded everyday first. The only way i could figure out was to add them individually. But they are not added automatically.

    You're welcome.

  • Podcast smart playlists no longer syncing to iPod nano?

I've been a long-time iPod podcast listener, despite the obvious intent to push this product into oblivion. I am no longer seeing smart podcast playlists on my iPod. This is a HUGE bummer to me, as I listen to podcasts while I run. And I hate running with my iPhone.
Anyone else not seeing smart podcast playlists syncing to their iPod anymore?

Here is the solution: After five hours of endless error messages and incomplete re-syncs, it all boiled down to this: Restore the iPod Touch via iTunes. Everything was first erased from the iPod but then everything- contents (photos, music and settings) were restored from iTunes perfectly. Finally now MobileMe is also on all my Apple products - including the heretofore frustrating iPod.
Hope someone can save themselves a lot of aggravation by trying this fix should the updates prove to be less the "seamless"!
    Cheers!

  • Podcasts in Smart Playlist not showing up on iPhone in iOS 5

Upon first syncing my iPhone to iTunes after uploading both to iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5, I noticed that my podcasts in Smart Playlists were not there, and coincidentally, the Smart Playlists were gone in iTunes (that's a different issue altogether).
The solution I found is that you have to sync the podcast Smart Playlist from the "Podcasts" tab on iTunes.  I did this with my phone plugged in, but suppose that this would also work with a wi-fi sync.
Choosing the Smart Playlists from the "Music" tab will result in empty playlists on your phone.
    Hope this helps!

I'm having the exact same issue on Mac OS 10.7.2 and iOS 5. There are some other posts on Podcasts not syncing with smart playlists. I haven't found a solution yet. Super annoying. I used to have a smart playlist of audio podcasts sorted by date. Now the Smart Playlist shows up on my iPhone - but it's empty. I've tried your solution but id didn't work for me. I've unchecked all Playlists in the Music tab and checked them in the Podcast tab and I've still got empty Smart Playlists on my iPhone. Let me know if you get any more info on this. I'd also like to add that this exact problem surfaced a while back with a previous iOS update.
Here are what I see as the variables in this problem...
    Music tab:
    • Playsts box (my Smart Playlists of Podcasts DO NOT show up here)
    • Genres box (I've tried checking and unchecking the Podcast Genre)
    Podcast tab:
    • Automattically including ___ episodes of ____ podcasts (I've tried checking and unchecking this)
    • List of indivudual podcasts with checkboxes  (I've tried checking and unchecking them)
    • Include Episodes from Playlists  (I've tried checking and unchecking them)

  • Mystery Podcasts Keep Showing Up in Smart Playlists

I use Smart Playlists to listen to Podcasts on my iPod Shuffles. It worked fine literally for years, but recently something changed.
Now when I make a Smart Playlist (I enter "Media Kind is Podcast")I get all my newly downloaded Podcasts, but I also get a list of about 50 podcasts that I deleted a long time ago. They are marked in the Smart Playlist as unavailable - iTunes says that it doesn't know where these Podcasts are located.
The problem is that they really don't exist at all. The original files are gone. They don't show up in Itunes (of course). They are also nowhere on my computer. I've done manual searches - looking through hundreds of folders where they might be located. I've also used the Windows Explorer Search feature to try to locate these files. They simply aren't anywhere on any of my hard drives. Therefore, I can't tell iTunes where they are located and I can't delete them. I can't delete them because they have already been deleted.
Yet, there is a reference to them in my iTunes library database file. There must be, or why would they keep showing up in a Smart Playlist? This is a real problem for me because it means I can't use Smart Playlists for my podcasts anymore.
Can anyone suggest a way to remove these podcast filenams from the iTunes database?
    Thanks!
    Doug

    Hi, Katrina.
I just wanted to report back on what happened.
I created a new Smart Playlist with the parameters "Media Kind is Podcast", and just like always, I got a list of all my curent podcasts plus about fifty or so of these phantom podcasts.
I selected one of these phantom podcasts and tried Alt-Delete, but that didn't do anything. Just hitting Delete didn't do anything either. Nor did Ctrl-Delete. However, Shift-Delete worked like a charm. I got this message:
"Are you sure you want to remove the selected podcast from your iTunes library? This podcast will also be removed from any iPod or iPhone which synchronizes with your iTunes library."
I clicked on the "Remove" button (my options were "Remove" and "Cancel"). The podcast name vanished from the playlist and apparently it was also removed from the library database, because when I created another podcast Smart Playlist, that phantom podcast did not reappear.
I then went through the entire Smart Playlist and selected all of the phantom podcasts. I hit shift-delete, clicked on "Remove" and they all vanished and none of them returned. My Smart Playlists are back to normal and the problem is gone.
Apparently, Shift-Delete is the command for deleting podcasts (and songs, I assume) directly from a playlist. This works even if the orignal file has already been deleted and the listing is just a phantom listing in the database.
Whether Shift-Delete to delete directly from a playlist works on all computers, I don't know. It certainly worked on mine, which is a PC.
    Thanks again, Katrina!
    Doug
