Podcast Smart Playlist Sync - Fix

If your iPhone and iPad can't sync Smart Playlists:
I figured it out after a few hours in the One-to-One classes where they told me it couldn't be done.
1. Go to "Edit Smart Playlist".
2. Turn off "Live Updating".
3. Go to Device then Podcasts.
4. Option should show up to "Include Episodes from Playlist".
If "Live Updating" is on then the option to sync the playlist disapears from the device setup.
You just need to manually update the smart playlist every time before you sync it.

I found a potential work around. I am still testing it. Works via usb or wifi sync.
In music, make sure "Entire music library" is not selected. If you want music to sync pick the playlist you want.
In podcast, make sure "automatically include all unplayed" is not selected. You will need to pick select podcast only playlist to sync over.
I am suspecting the music sync is screwing up the smart playlist for podcast when you choose "Entire music library" or "automatically inclue all unplayed" is screwing up the music. Sometimes all my podcast playlist are removed from itunes, other times only a few of them. So by separating the sync out by their individual playlist I haven't had any problems yet, but i am still testing. There could be other unknown variables causing it to happen I haven't discovered.
But if you do find yourself with missing playlist and don't want to painstakingly re make them. Go into your <Previous iTunes Libraries> folder. There should be some previous backups of your past library to restore from.

  • Why won't all of my smart playlists sync from itunes to my ipad?

Why won't all of my smart playlists sync? They show up in the playlist screen of my ipad music app. When I click on the playlist, there are no songs listed. I sync it again, and the playlist now shows zero songs in the list. I keep trying to sync it, and it goes back and forth from showing there are 60 songs in the playlist, which I can't play, to showing zero songs. Please help.

Yes, sorry, you are correct, it was iTunes Match. I purchased storage on iTunes Match (probably a bad idea), because I had over 1000 songs on my i-phone 4S -which is eating up my storage space. Well, anyway...After I purchased it, I followed the instructions: go to: Settings, "open" music, "Turn on" iTunes Match. After I did that, I opened up the Music App -on my phone -ALL of my playlists were gone and only 208 songs showed... I messed up my phone once before and I had to log into my i-Tunes account (on my computer) and "reset" to another date. I would like to do that again -if possible...
    Please help!

  • Can't sync my podcast smart playlist(s) to my ipod

I created a smart playlist to hold my podcasts, which would sync to my ipod when I was using the previous version of itunes, but after installing itunes 9 I can no longer get that playlist to sync to my ipod. I have tried both unplugging and replugging back in my ipod as well as restore factory settings and reloading everything back onto the ipod, still no luck. Does anyone know how I can solve this or if there will be a patch for itunes 9 to resolve this as well as some of the problems experienced with syncing with devices like the apple tv.

Check out this article: http://www.gotknowhow.com/articles/how-to-get-podcast-playlists-to-sync-in-itune s-9.aspx
I was in the same boat and 20 minutes on the phone with an Apple Product Specialist and we figured it out.
Apple changed the sync behavior of iTunes, because what we all have been doing was a workaround for an old bug we didn't recognize as such. We abandoned syncing podcasts using the Podcasts tab because it didn't give us the control that Smart Playlists gave us. We discovered that iTunes would sync our podcast playlists under the music tab.
That was fixed, though I wish it had been covered during the iTunes demo in the Keynote.
Use the Music tab to sync songs and other files you find in your Music library. Use the Podcasts tab to sync podcast episodes you find in your Podcasts library. Both tabs have sections listing all of your playlists. On the Podcasts tab, you may have to scroll to the bottom.
Next, Turn OFF the "Automatically include" option. This is simple syncing. If you want more control, turn this off and select the Smart Playlists you've defined using the bottom section.
I found that all of the playlists I used to sync were still selected in this lower section. As soon as I turned of the "Automatically include" option, everything was back to normal.
FYI, I love having the "Automatically fill free space with songs" option on the music tab. Now as I listen to podcasts and they are removed from the Smart Playlists, I get more music and no wasted space on my device.

  • Podcast smart playlists no longer syncing to iPod nano?

I've been a long-time iPod podcast listener, despite the obvious intent to push this product into oblivion. I am no longer seeing smart podcast playlists on my iPod. This is a HUGE bummer to me, as I listen to podcasts while I run. And I hate running with my iPhone.
Anyone else not seeing smart podcast playlists syncing to their iPod anymore?

Here is the solution: After five hours of endless error messages and incomplete re-syncs, it all boiled down to this: Restore the iPod Touch via iTunes. Everything was first erased from the iPod but then everything- contents (photos, music and settings) were restored from iTunes perfectly. Finally now MobileMe is also on all my Apple products - including the heretofore frustrating iPod.
Hope someone can save themselves a lot of aggravation by trying this fix should the updates prove to be less the "seamless"!
    Cheers!

  • Bug: iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 podcast smart playlist sort order and how to fix.

There seems to be a bug in iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 involving the sort order of a smart playlist of podcasts. I created such a playlist and sorted by release date on iTunes but I noticed it had a different sort order on the iPod Touch.
After playing around with it a bit I found that the only way to preserve the sort order that I have in iTunes on the iPod Touch is to uncheck "Live Updating" in the smart playlist.

Confirming this incredibly annoying bug.  Basic list sorting not working... real bottom shelf work apple.
workaround update:  limit to must be turned on, set it to an absurdly high number if you don't want to actually limit the playlist, then one of the sortby options in that submenu will work.   The live update checkbox is irrelevant from experimentation.
This workaround does NOT fix the fundamental problem: sort order from itunes in smart playlists is not being synced and preserved in ios5 devices.
This is the latest in a long string of debacles which is making me seriously consider swapping to debian stable. (snow leopard to lion was a severe downgrade in performance for anyone doing heavy multitasking.. scheduling is FUBAR... when a command option escape beachballs on a brand new core 17 machine, your OS has serious problems with nice levels)

  • Live Updating mangles smart playlist sync - again and forever?

For the last several itunes updates, setting a smart playlist to Live Update causes the order of playlist items to become mangled on synced deviceL
Unchecking the Live Updating restores the proper order to the items on the synced device.
Its a huge pain if you desire to set up podcast play order on your iphone so you don't have to play DJ in your car.
It was a problem a long time ago, and there was a kludgy workaround. Then they fixed it. And 2 versions of iTunes later it came back, and the workaround didn't work that time. It now appears to be a permanent bug, and apparently nobody cares at Apple.
Here's a wonderful example of how longstanding this bug is:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11396625#11396625
This one is even more pathetic, going back to 2009:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/10168181#10168181
There are many, many, other threads complaining about this issue so I've lost faith that Apple will care or try to fix it.
There has always been the occasional bug or error with Apple hardware/software; nobody's perfect - but they used to make an effort to fix things in a timely manner. At least they used to think the perception of attention to detail was important for marketing purposes.
Now, they are apparently content to Pareto Principle their products becuase they have the mass sales and a giant customer base that will accept 'just good enough' products.
So sad to see the decline of such a once great company.

FYI, I've found that Live Updating can SORT OF work. It seems if you only have two rules, live upating works (IE, I have one that is a Rating must be 3-5*'s and last played cannot be within the last 8 weeks). Once the song is played it disapears off the playlist. BUT, as soon as I try to add a third rule, it doesn't work anymore! This is unfortunate because two rules really limits the ability of the playlist...

  • Reorganizing individual items within a podcast smart playlist

With the help of some fine folks from here, I was finally able to create a couple smart playlists on my 5th gen classic iPod, but now I have a new problem: I seem unable to organize the individual podcasts into any playing order. I'd like them to automatically play in order from the earliest downloaded to the most recently downloaded. But no matter what I do in iTunes in the smart playlist itself, once it's synced to my iPod, the playlist is in alphabetical order by artist.
Anybody have any suggestions of how I might correct this? Thanks!

obviously Apple does not consider this a bug...
It's hard to imagine that Apple might not consider it a bug. Personally I chalk it up to the fact that (a) it's a relatively harmless (albeit annoying) bug; and (b) they've got tons of bugs to fix and this one hasn't made it to the top of the list yet. I've added this to my list of bugs to test with every new release (because Apple frustratingly refuses to issue release notes that tells us what bugs have been fixed).
Regardless, their users obviously consider the loss of smart playlist sorting a bug. Please join us in complaining to Apple about this:

  • ITunes Podcasts & Smart Playlists Question

    Hi everyone,
Thanks for taking the time to read my question.
I have a 60gb Colour iPod and have nearly filled it, so do not want to sync any of the podcasts to it. I've disabled Podcast syncing in the options tab after connecting the iPod, but Podcasts are still syncing because I have a large range of Smart Playlists which are set to show me what I added by date. This means they are treating Podcast content as being "Added On" a certain date and hence appearing in the Smart Playlist and being synced.
It is my understanding that to disable this I have to add a clause to the Smart Playlist which says "Kind, Is Not, Podcast" - is this the case? To go through every playlist I have would take ages and can anyone advise if it's possible to apply the same criteria to all playlists? I tried to select more than one by holding down Control or Shift but it didn't work.
Any thoughts would be very gratefully received!
    Cheers,
    Edd

  • Smart Playlists are fixed with iPod Updater 2006-01-10

    Hello Podders, Resident Furball here...
iPod Updater 2006-01-10 restores dynamic updating of Smart Playlists on the iPod
iPod Updater 2005-06-26 disabled the onboard dynamic updating of Smart Playlists on iPods older than the Nano and Gen5. This feature can now be restored using iPod Updater 2006-01-10.
We held lengthy debates about this issue on Discussions (here, here and here), as well as the iLounge thread that sparked a dedicated website.
However, we are glad to confirm that the latest iPod Updater resolves this issue, as I was informed by email from Apple Level 2 Support, and as tested by some of our long-suffering Gen4 and Pod Photo users. The Apple KB article on Smart Playlists has also been updated.
Since the threads that I started have now been locked down to reflect resolution, I'm posting this just to confirm that everything now appears to have been resolved, and I would like to thank everyone here on Discussions for their patience and excellent troubleshooting in diagnosing this problem. Thank you to everyone who posted Feedback, those of you who took the time to phone Apple, and also to Apple Level 2 Phone Support for their assistance in escalating this matter up to US Engineering.
    Happy Podding everyone!
    Kind regards,
    Gopha.

    Hello folks, Resident Furball again...
Many folks have now reported that Smart Playlist functionality has been properly restored to the iPod.
However, some folks have been reporting that Smart Playlists containing Podcasts are still coming to grief.
From what I have seen reported, the firmwares prior to the Updater 2005-06-26 that broke Smart Playlists had the ability to dynamically update Podcast-containing Smart Playlists, but this functionality has not been restored in the latest 2006-01-10 that has fixed 'simple' Smart Playlists.
I don't use Podcasts myself, so if you would like to know more, please refer to posts from Vibeeen and Tutackhamen who have described the continuing issue in detail.
In the meanwhile, I have drawn the attention of Level 2 Support to these reports, and recommend that you continue to submit appropriate Feedback if you are affected by this quirk.
    Kind regards,
    Gopha.

  • Sorting my Podcasts/Smart Playlist

I used to be able to sort my podcasts in a smart playlist, from my highest rating to lowest rating.
I must have done something, but now my podcasts are no longer in the same rated order after syncing to my iPhone.
I know I am doing something wrong cuz I did this before, but cannot figure it out.
    Any help would be appreciated

Smart playlist sorted on Release date still out of order on my touch. How can it not make sense to the Apple people that a serial podcast should be played in order of release date. And multiple related podcasts selected in the same smart playlist should all be played in temporal order. Even filtering on smart lists cannot be based on the release date. IE I want all of the podcasts "RELEASED" in 2008 in a list and I want to play them in temporal order. It is such a no brainer that I cannot believe that I am writing this again for the FOURTH itunes release!! Smart lists?? More like moron lists!!
Seriously regretting recommending apple to friends. WIth this much incompetence they are likely to come out with the latest and greatest new tablet device and forget to put a camera in it.

  • Top 25 smart playlist bug fixes.....yay!!!!

Just noticed that with my iphone 4 & iTunes 9.2 the top 25 playlist is fixed, with live updating checked.
I must assume this is to do with iOS 4 as it was never working with 3x.
ANyone else confirm this is the case?
    John

I have a couple of issues with the iPod Touch.
    1) I have a smart playlist with the 25 most played songs in iTunes. When I sync the playlist and open it up on the iPod Touch, the playlist contains 25 random songs which are totakky different from the ones in my iTunes playlist.
    2) I have songs from Creed's Greatest Hits CD and from Queen's Greatest Hits CD. When I look for songs by artists, by songs, or by playlists I find them with no problem. But, when I look for them in Cover Flow it puts the Queen's songs under the Creed's album cover. The odd thing is that when one of those Queen's songs is playing, the cover art displayed is the correct one... and on the top it reads:
    Queen
    "Name of song"
    Greatest Hits
But if I flip the iPod to see cover flow, it'll change the cover art to Creed's cover art.

  • How can I make all my Smart Playlists sync onto my iPhone?

I recently updated my iTunes software to 10.6 or whatever the newest update was and since then, I have been unable to sync all my playlists onto my iPhone. The Top 25 Most Played, Recently Added, and 90s Music won't sync to my phone and I'm hoping someone can help me fix the problem. All the regular playlists are syncing just fine and 2 of the Smart Playlists I have are also syncing just fine. I've tried recreating the playlists but it still won't work. Any ideas?

I had the same issue. If they are selected in the Music tab, try duplicating, not just recreating, the playlist and deleting the old one. This worked for me and I have not had the issue again.

  • Smart Playlists Sync from Itunes

    Hey all,
Whenever I connect my iphone 4 to my macbook all of the smart playlists automatically sync to my iphone, even though i have "manage music manually" selected under my iphone settings. Anyone know how i stop these playlsits from syncing to my iphone everytime i connect the phone to my macbook. Thanks

With iTunes Match enabled on an iOS device direct syncing of music via USB or Wi Fi is disabled. All music management takes place directly on the iDevice. All supported playlists are uploaded to the cloud and are available on your iDevice in the "Playlists" section."
Some criteria for Smart Playlists that are not supported are any Playlists that reference other playlists, comments, Checked. You may need to experiement a little with the smart playlists to get them just the way you want them in iOS.
