Podcasts are restarting iPod

This problem started shortly after upgrading to version 7 of iTunes.
Currently about 90% of the podcasts I download, whether amateur or professional, will force iPod to restart when trying to play them. I have tried restoring the iPod (purchased about a month ago) but it has had no effect.
Any ideas?

are the podcasts that the ipod is resetting on mono mp3s?
if so, perhaps check to see if the workaround from the following document is of any help with that:
Fifth Generation iPod resets when playing some mono MP3 songs and podcasts

  • Some, but not all, podcasts existing on the iPod no longer appear in iTunes. Different podcasts have been affected at different times, after changes in the state of the iPod. Only podcasts are affected.

I have not seen this precise issue addressed anywhere. I don’t know if it’s an iTunes or an iPod problem:
    - Some, but not all, podcasts existing on the iPod no longer appear in iTunes;
this, after normal behavior for more than a year since purchase of the iPod.
    - Different podcasts have been affected at different times, after changes in the state of the iPod.
    - Only podcasts are affected.
    - This concerns an iPod nano 6th gen. and iTunes 11.0.2 (26) on System 10.6.8
    - The only change to iTunes, the Mac, or the iPod is that just before this condition began
I’d begun syncing an iPhone via iTunes.
I sync manually (“manually manage music and videos”). The first time this happened, I wanted to delete seventeen podcast episodes (all belonging to one podcast) existing on the iPod — but they didn’t show up in iTunes. I tried re-downloading them and re-syncing, to see if the new versions would somehow “re-link” to iTunes. They didn’t. Only one — new — episode appeared in iTunes.
I ultimately reset the iPod and manually resynced all the podcasts I currently had on iTunes. That worked, though I had to painstakingly add in all the other content deleted by the reset.
So: after that reset and manual sync, all podcasts and episodes on the iPod were visible to iTunes and I was able to delete the podcast and its — now 18 — episodes I’d wanted to get rid of to begin with. But the next time I connected the iPod, only 8 podcast episodes out of 21 episodes total existing on the iPod were visible to iTunes. These are different podcasts; I’d deleted the original “invisible” ones.
By “visible,” I mean in the “Podcasts” list view under “[name]’s iPod” in the iTunes sidebar. If I select “[name]’s” iPod in the iTunes sidebar and the “Podcasts” tab, all podcasts and episodes are visible, though greyed out because I’m set to sync manually. It’s unclear to me if these are the podcasts on the iPod or those currently in iTunes, as they are currently the same. If I switch to syncing automatically, all content on the iPod will be lost again, so I’m not up to trying it at the moment.
As I said,  this involves only podcasts. All other content on the iPod does appear in iTunes.

I have the same problem- i see my movies in the ipod section in itunes and they even show as mpeg4 in the 'kind' section but they dont have that small TV icon next to them. if i play these in itunes, they play fine- but try playing them on the ipod and all you hear is the sound and no picture. All videos that i manually transfer work fine in the beginning- its when i hook up the ipod to the comp again and start itunes- they start showing up without the 'tv' icon!! i have to again transfer them from the itunes library to activate them as videos.

  • I have a 5th gen ipod and recently all of my video podcasts stopped showing up in my ipod.  They still show up and play in itunes, just not in my video podcast list on my ipod.  All of the podcasts are Quicktime Large.

I have a 5th gen ipod and recently all of my video podcasts stopped showing up in my ipod.  They still show up and play in itunes, just not in my video podcast list on my ipod.  All of the podcasts are Quicktime Large.  For some reason my ipod has stopped supporting Quicktime Large.  Now I've had to redownload every video podcast as Quicktime Small.
Anyone have any ideas whether this is from the the software version 1.3 and if they'll fix it in the next update?

I'm having same problem, but QT Small videos are also not getting synced.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all media and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

First of all, you don't need to use CAPS in thread title, as many people will consider this a desperate shout for attention you're not likely to get.
Then, make sure your podcasts are synced with iPod. If they are, podcasts should be available from "Music" menu. If they 're not, browse for sync options in iTunes and make them copy to your iPod. After all, if you subscribed to video podcasts, don't be surprised you can't view them on your Nan for one obvious reason... iPod Nano can't view videos.

  • Podcasts are showing up under Albums, Songs and Artists categories on iPod

I recently purchased an iPod - 80gb. I used iTunes to subscribe to several podcasts.
On iTunes the podcasts are in the podcasts folder, the music is in the music folder - happy days!
However, on my ipod, as well as being listed under the podcast category, they are also accessible from Albums, Artists and Songs. This is seriously annoying.
Is this a bug? A girl who worked in the Apple store seems to think it might be when I brought my ipod in for them to check.
I use iTunes only to manage podcasts and music. I tried a restore and it's still the same.
The related issue is that while the podcasts sync fine and appear as desired in the podcast category, the played podcasts are still available via Albums, Artists and Songs even though I've instructed iTunes to only sync unplayed items.
Will this be fixed? Is there a workaround?

Unless Apple changes the software, there is no real fix. If you don't want podcasts to play when you're shuffling your music library, make sure the podcasts are set to Skip When Shuffling (under Get Info). And you can send your feedback to Apple here:

  • IPod mini forgets that podcasts are podcasts

I have recently started observing a problem with my iPod mini. On occasion, without any so-far-discernable pattern, my iPod forgets that my podcasts are podcasts. Instead, I end up with a big playlist on the iPod named "Podcasts" containing all of the podcasts. When I try to sync my iPod, I'm told there isn't enough room to sync because the iPod has too much music. This was my first clue that something was amiss; I discovered that the podcasts were no longer being recognized as such. I manually deleted the playlist and all its entries and synced, and it worked fine. However, for some reason I'm still observing this random "forgetfulness" of my iPod. Anyone else seen this, and any solutions?
iPod Mini 2G 6GB, iTunes 6.0.4, Windows and Mac.

I have had a similar problem. Without any specific pattern I will have it where iTunes that I don't even have selected to automatically update start appearing on my iTunes as songs. This fills up my iPod. THe only way I've found to reliably to fix it is to basically start over. Sometimes I have to delete all subscribe podcasts and go to manual mode to remove everything. But inevitably the same thing happens again. It is very annoying.

  • On iPod, podcasts are sorting oddly

I recently updated my OS from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. My iTunes is the latest version. My iPod is as up to date as it can get. (Just to set the stage.)
In iTunes, I have all my podcasts arranged in a number of smart playlists, and all of those playlists are sorted by release date, oldest to newest. And on the iPod, this is also how they showed up. Until the last couple of days, I've had no problems. Suddenly, since I updated to Mountain Lion, although iTunes still shows the correct sorting, in my smart playlists on the iPod, the podcasts are arranged randomly. I can not figure out what order they're being sorted in, but it certainly isn't by release date, alphabetically by title, author, or album, and it isn't by size.
Has anyone else seen this problem? Is there a solution? I listen to a lot of podcasts that are release-date-sensitive, and I have always listened to them in chronological order. Now...I have no idea what order it's going to present them in.

It has also decided that it just isn't going to sync a couple of my smart playlists. There are podcasts in those lists in iTunes, but when I sync my iPod, those lists simply aren't copied. Every playlist is checked on the Podcasts tab, and the podcasts that are in those smart lists show up in OTHER smart lists (I sometimes listen to them differently, depending on how much time I have).
For example, I have a smart playlist called "All Podcasts" which just presents them to me in chronological order. Then I have one smart playlist for everything under five minutes long, one for everything under 10 (but more than 5), everything under 15 (but more than 10), and so on. A couple of podcasts show up under "All Podcasts" but not under the > 30 < 45 list or the > 45 < 60 list.
Bizarre. I can't figure out what it's doing and how to fix it.

  • I downloaded podcasts into my ipod.  Where are they?

I downloaded podcasts into my ipod.  Where are they?

    Under the Podcasts menu, obviously.
If you do not have Podcasts listed on your Main Menu, go to the Settings/Music menu and scroll down to Podcasts and press the Select (centre) button so there is a tick next to Podcasts.

  • In iTunes I can't drag and drop podcasts onto my iPod anymore.

In iTunes I can't drag and drop podcasts onto my iPod anymore. I can still drag and drop songs onto my iPod and I can still drag and drop podcasts into other playlists. I've tried restarting my computer and my iPod and I've also checked for software updates for the iPod and iTunes. Help?

Update: I seem to have fixed the problem!  I went to the "summary" section of my iPod after clicking on the device on the left side of iTunes.  I checked the box that allowed me to "manually manage music and videos" and applied this option.  The songs are syncing!  And, yay, they're playing on my iPod now!  Hopefully, this helps anyone else who might have this problem.  There might be other issues, but this is working for now.

  • 30 gig video, podcasts crash the ipod with iTunes 7.0.1

has anyone had their ipod crash only when playing podcasts? short podcasts are fine, but 50 minute or more, crash and restart the ipod. playing music is fine.

I have noticed two things with my 30 gig Video Ipod since i updated the software thru iTunes 7. First all my podcasts syncs that are happening with Album artwork are crashing the iPod and making it restart and the second is that it has also affected some songs albeit selectively. I tried turning the album artwork off and only once did one of the five podcasts i downloaded did work!
All the Podcasts or most of the ones that I had downloaded before iTunes 7 updater for iPod do tend to work but there is no pattern.
The reason I love apple and my iPod is the sheer magic of podcasts that are my companion and daily dose of caffeine en route to work...and I hate to get any glitches.
Can somebody walk through the step by step procedure to correct this or does one wait for another update from Apple?

  • ITunes Can't Find Podcasts on my iPod Touch

Since I upgraded to OS3.0 on my Touch, I have been unable to keep track of my Podcasts in iTunes (both 8 & 9). This has persisted despite upgrading my Touch to 3.1.1 and iTunes to 9.0.1.8. iTunes only finds 16 podcasts, even though I have 76 - so I can't delete any. (I do not sync my podcasts because there are more in iTunes than I want on my Touch.) Any thoughts how to get iTunes to accurately read my Touch? I know the podcasts are therebecause I can play them, and MusicRescue identifies and copies all of them. Why can't iTunes? It doesn't make sense, but it's been a problem for about 2 months, now. My music files appear to all be OK.

The problem appears to be with the Touch - because when I checked my iPod Classic, all of the podcasts are found by iTunes.

  • Podcast Synchronization of Ipod and Hard Drive

    Hi,
I'm fairly new to the whole iTunes/iPod thingy, so this question might sound stupid, but what I wanna do is the following:
I've downloaded various podcast episodes of different podcasts to my hard drive. For some podcasts, I want to begin with the first episode and catch up with everything, and so I also downloaded those.
Now, my iPod has only limited memory space left, so I want to have the first episodes on my iPods to listen to them, and then gradually replace them with the next expisodes.
However, the synchronize option doesn't work here at all (or I'm too stupid to use it). And neither do I want to manually put the episodes on my iPod because this would be rather time-consuming.
First, I unticked the more recent episodes (those I don't want to listen to right now) in iTunes on my harddrive and figured, if I then click on sychronize (all), it would transfer all selected episodes. Well, that didn't work. It still put the deselected episodes on my iPod. Then I thought I would select certain podcasts and only synchronize those, but it still put all the deselected episodes for these podcasts on my iPod.
The options like "sychronize newest episodes" and similar ones don't work either.
So, for me, it would appear to be the very simplest solution to have a sychronize option like "synchronize all selected episodes" in the menu but no, there is none like this (I'm using iTunes 7). I have to admit I've only been introduced to the whole Apple / iTunes thingy because I got an iPod as a present and I have already found way too many things that are way too complicated and not practical, so this just seems to be another one of these issues. I would love if someone could prove me wrong and teach me how to accomplish what I described above without having to manually move around episodes every other day.
And another rather confusing thing: initially, I had set iTunes to download the latest episode for a given podcast after a refresh. Then, when I realized I wanted to start with the earlier episodes and save some memory space, I set it so it would do nothing. Now, however, it really does nothing. It doesn't even display when a new episode is available. For example, I had the latest episode of an extensive podcast series and deleted it in my iTunes because it took a lot of memory space. But now I don't even see this episode any longer. I'm sorry, I'm not good at describing problems but what I want is, I want to see a list of all available episodes that will be updated regularly but I don't want the latest episodes to be downloaded automatically.. how in the world can I do that?
Sorry for the long post, I'm just getting a bit frustrated after having spent half a day on trying to figure these seemingly simple issues out
Thanks a lot for any help!
iPod Nano   Windows XP   iTunes 7

You can delete songs from your iTunes/computer hard drive after transferring them to the iPod, and for this you need to set your iPod to manage the iPod content manually.
However, storing music on your iPod and nowhere else is an extremely risky option because when (and not if) there comes a time to restore your iPod, which is a very common fix for iPod problems, then all the music would be erased. If you no longer have the music in iTunes (or any other back up), then all that music would be lost.
At the very least back up your music to either cd or dvd before deleting it, particularly any purchased music/videos, as this would have to be bought again if it were lost. See this about backing up media.
How to back up your media in iTunes.
What if the iPod were lost/stolen/needed repair? Again, the music would lost. I strongly recommend a back up, and if computer hard drive space is in short supply, you should seriously consider an external hard drive. They are not expensive, and the cost is well worth it when compared to the loss of all your precious music.

  • How can I change the order of my podcasts on my iPod?

I am adding a lot of new podcasts to my iPod.  However they are being organized by most recent first and oldest last.  I want to hear them in release order without having to go backwards.  I can change the order in iTunes, but I can't seem to get my iPod to change the order.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Make a playlist with the order you want. The iPod Classic doesn't have options for reversing the order in the Podcasts display..
