Podcasts broken in 9.2 with error "A duplicate file name was specified"

Ever since the 9.2 upgrade my podcasts have not been able to update. The following error message is displayed when I click the icon next to the podcast:
+There was a problem downloading "... podcast name ...". A duplicate file name was specified.+
Digging in the iTunes download directory I see that a directory entry is created for each podcast (with a .tmp suffix). Inside there is a download.mp3 that is zero bytes in size.
I've tried reorganizing the library, restarting, reinstalling, etc.
Not sure if this matters, but I've been mounting my itunes library via nfs for the past five years or so without any issue.
I tried to see what iTunes was up to via dtrace/iosnoop but it appears that they've gone and restricted that at the OS level -- so no luck there. Any luck here?

Close iTunes, delete the download directory, and restart.

  • Error Message- Duplicate File name was specified

I am trying to purchase and download some music for the past month now and am unable to do so. When I go to buy something it says "Could Not Purchase "song". A duplicate File name was specified.
    Then Below it says
There was an error in the Itunes Store. Please Try Again Later.
And when I go to authorize computer I get an error message stating "There was an error storing your authorization information on this computer."
    Then below it says
Try doing a repair install on ITunes from the "add or remove programs" control pane.
I did this and am still having the same error messages that I was having before. This is getting extremely irritating and I would really appreciate if someone could help me get this figured out!
    Thanks in advance!

I DID IT! I FIXED IT, FINALLY!!! At least it worked for me. Here's what I did: from Control Panel/Programs/Programs and Features/Uninstall or Change Program, I right-clicked on iTunes and selected Repair. After that ran and completed, I went to Computer/Local Disk (C:)/Program Files. From the list, I right-clicked on iTunes and selected “Run as Administrator.” After that I tried to purchase music from iTunes, and it worked! I hope this makes sense and works for you. Good luck!

Locate the photos folder which is selected for syncing with the device and delete the folder iPod Photo Cache inside.

  • I am getting and error message saying a duplicate file name was specified

Help I am trying to sync new songs onto my Iphone and keep getting an error message telling me "the iphone can not be synched. a duplicate file name was specified" how can i fix this,

I have a 27" iMac with the latest version of iTunes.  I tried restoring my iPod and even removing and re-installing iTunes.  What eventually worked for me was plugging into my PC and restoring/reformatting it to work with my PC.  I don't know why it wouldn't work with my iMac, but now it seems to be working.

  • Error "The IPod cannot be synched. A duplicate file name was specified"

When I drag a song from my ITunes library to my Nano, an error pops up that says "The IPod cannot be synched. A duplicate file name was specified." I've read on other boards that I should delete the IToner bundle, but there is no IToner bundle in ITunes plug ins, just a Quartz Composer Visualizer. ANy suggestions on how to keep the error message from popping up every time I add a song?

Drag the song from Library to the playlist window then drag it to Devices instead of directly from the Library.

i am trying to sync my 160gb, but get an error message "the ipod cannot be synced. a duplicate file name was specified. it only syncs a small % of music.  any clues?

Hmm.  It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

If necessary, post the resultings numbers and we can verify what the next steps to take.

  • Error message "A duplicate file name was specified"

Every time I open iTunes or attempt to make a purchase, I get the error message "A duplicate file name was specificed. There was an error in the iTunes Stores. Please try again later."
It started when I tried to download a book a few days ago.
I do not have any plugins installed, so there are none to remove/disable. I'm running the most recent version of iTunes (11.0.5) for Windows 7 (64-bit). I tried clearing the iTunes cache to no avail.

Try and unchecking Manually manage music and videos on the summary page in iTunes. To get there, just go to ____'s iPod, scroll down, and it should be there. You can then check any other boxes (or uncheck) that you think might help you. That box might have automatically checked itself after the update. Also, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes by going to the apple in the top left hand corner, and clicking software update.

  • Please help!! Ipod classic error message: "...cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified

So I bought a "new to me" Ipod classic (gen 7, 160 gb) I have a gen 6-160gb already but I wanted the gen 7. I bought this one used from GameStop(i did purchase the warranty so if there is no solution I may have to put it to use). It was not restored to factory settings or anything when I purchased it. So to start out I restored to factory settings. It had originally been used for a Mac, and I operate with Windows so it wouldn't do anything unless I restored it and started over fresh. I tried to sync it but it gave me an error message (i cannot recall what it said- but i believe it was the same as i am getting now). It only synced about half my songs (I have over 3000 on Itunes and it only did about 1400). I tried to restore factory settings again and after it finished it showed all my songs on the ipod, but the error message still popped up. My songs play on my ipod just fine it shows all my songs and all my playlists. everything seems to be working fine but the message still returns. I plug in my Ipod to sync and instead of showing the screen where it tells you about firmware and updates etc that I always got with my other ipod it, the 'welcome to your new ipod' screen like it did after I restored it.
Can anyone help me fix this problem???? or am I royally screwed and need to throw in the towel?
Just to specify so there's no confusion:
Ipod in question- Classic Gen7 160gb
Ipod software version- 2.0.4 (as of 3/2/15)
    Itunes version- 12.0.1.26
    OS- Windows 7 64bit
if there is any other information needed please let me know (and an idea of how to find it.)
Im afraid to sync my Gen6 or other ipods (2 gen4 shuffles that are for my kids) for fear of something similar happening to them.

This error can also come from WireTap Pro or possibly Snapz Pro ! Look in your personal library itunes plug ins folder for anything called iToner - I found it in there and promptly removed it and now its working again... I never bought iToner but apparently Ambrosia software puts a supplement file in there so look around for it if you have any Ambrosia software products on your system you maybe need to hunt this little monster down.....
Needless to say I will never trust itunes plug in again from anyone.....

  • When starting up iTunes, getting error message "A duplicate file name was specified"

Downloaded recent version of itunes, and started recieving the error, tried all the fixes mentioned on here and the internet. Even after reformating the HD, installing a different version of windows (W7), and installingf iTunes, still getting the error.  This is not allowing me to authorize the machine or sync the iPhone.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
PS - there is no third party software and describe in some troubleshooting notes.

  • Why am I getting the error message, "the iPod "..." cannot be synced because a duplicate file name was specified"?

Whenever I plug my ipod into my laptop, I keep getting this error message, and then it freezes iTunes and will not sync anything onto my ipod anymore.

Delete the iPod Photo Cache folder.  Its location can be found here:
