Podcasts don't automatically download

I have an iPad with Retina display wifi and iOS 7. I have the Podcasts app settings set to check for new podcasts every hour and to auto download. However, the podcasts never update unless I open the app. Upon opening, all new episodes begin downloading. I thought the newest version would pull all my podcasts down in the background so when I open the app, they are ready to play. Am I mistaken?

Hi,
have you allowed the app to refresh while in the background? This did it for me.

  • Subscribers complain that podcasts don't automatically download

    All,
We have received a complaint form someone trying to subscribe to our podcast (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=201681567 / FeedURL=http://www.sellingpower.com/video/rssiTunes.asp). They say that when they click subscribe they get an error message and iTunes does not automatically download the videos.
I cannot duplicate the error. If there is an error, can anyone let me know either how to recreate the error and/or fix it.
    Thank you in advance.

The extension to your feed URL is .asp. It should be .xml. Alter it and subscribing should work. However if you have submitted the .asp version to iTunes you may have some difficulty changing it. Possibly if you can incorporate the 'itunes:new-feed-url' tag into the file with the .xml version of the URL it may work.

  • Why are my podcast subscriptions not automatically downloading?

Some of my podcast subscriptions are not automatically downloading. New subscriptions are, but subscriptions that previously downloaded automatically no longer do so. When I re-subscribe, it does not solve the problem.

    Hello>
I made changes to my rss file on my webserver two weeks ago and I do not see the updates on the iTunes site.
How long on average does it take for the ITunes site to see my new changes?
    Thank you.

  • How do I setup automatic download of PDF files in Safari?

Previously whenever I clicked on a pdf link it would automatically download the file and place it in my downloads folder, now I have to manually save each pdf file in a safari window to my downloads folder assigning it a name. When I would download credit card statements, as an example. the statements would automatically download and be placed in my downloads folder and be assigned a progressive name like "statement1", "statement2", etc. But now it's so frustrating that files don't automatically download, and that I manually have to save each one and assign it a name. If you have any suggestions to help, I'd greatlly appreciate it!

pjmetz: You say "tried changing from Adobe Reader to Preview and then Safari to get the automatic downloading to stop, but neither choice produced the desired effect." What effect did these changes produce? I am sure they didn't leave things as they were, did they? If they did, and Adobe Reader is strong-arming its way to causing all PDF files to download, try removing Reader and give it a test with no Reader-assist. Oh, I'm not trying to get you to give up on Reader. You can copy Reader to an ext. HDD for safe-keeping, and then trash it from the internal HDD, and empty the trash. Then test Safari. If Safari works correctly without Reader, get your answer from Adobe.com
maxintaft: PDF files cannot be editied easily even on your HDD, mush less in a browser window. Whatever it is you are typing in (or have been typing in previously), it is not a PDF file, so your issue needs a new question, or contact the school site webmaster for help.

  • Yahoo email not automatically downloading

I've noticed that yahoo emails don't automatically download on my phone anymore - when I launch the mail app (the built-in apple one, NOT the yahoo mail app), then it downloads all new messages, but other than that, they're not getting pushed automatically.
They used to automatically get pushed, and I haven't changed any settings.
    Any ideas?

I think you mis-understood - I didn't say I expected a yahoo rep to post here, but I have seen posts where people emailed yahoo and posted their responses - if I can find a response that basically says "Yes, it's on our side, we're working on it, thanks for your patience", then that'll be good enough for me.  Without that, i've got no proof, and would like to keep this open longer.
This started happening to me after I upgraded to 5.0 I believe, and I have seen people post experiences where they have multiple iPhones/pads/pods, and the ones that were at 5.0 or above had the problem, and the ones that were on an older OS didn't.  Given that, the finger seems to point at Apple as well.

  • Some podcasts don't flow into smart folders

I've noticed that every once and awhile I have to do a COMMAND+I/INFO/Genre and relabel all the podcasts in itunes to be "podcasts".  A few years back itunes never required that.  For some reasons all podcasts don't automatically flow into the smart folder when podcast is picked as a genre -- so the only thing I can assume is that genre is not reliable anymore as a way to make podcasts flow into a smart folder, especially if the publisher doesn't describe it that way, and instead calls it "business podcast."

I have solved the problem!  I wanted to document the solution here in case anyone else encounters the same problem.  The key is to select all of the podcasts and click "Get Info" (this allows you to change IDL tags for the entire group all at once) and then type in a name for the album.  Once the set of podcasts has an album name associated with them, they show up in the "podcast" section on my iPod Touch.

  • How do I stop podcasts from automatically downloading?

I've tried everything including changing the settings for my entire library to just refresh the feeds, but iTunes is still automatically downloading episodes.
What is worse though, is many times its going back into certain feeds to download older, and usually years old, episodes, so that obviously clogs up memory and CPU space on my computer, with no seemingly end in site when dealing with podcasts that have episode numbers in the hundreds and for some reason the feed is downloading dozens of them from several years ago.
I don't understand that at all, in terms of why iTunes refreshing a feed would go back and download episodes going way back in the feed's history as opposed to the latest one, or the ones that showed up, since the last time the feed was refreshed, with the proper later dates, but I'd just want to stop the automatic process and just simply have all the feeds refreshed so I can pick and choose what I want to download, instead of all at once.  What am I doing wrong?

Go to iTunes > Preferences > Store and Uncheck the option to Sync podcast subscriptions, settings and stations, then set up each machine as you want it.

  • Possible to automatically download specific episodes from subscribed podcast?

I'm wondering if it's at all possible to automatically download only specific episodes in a subscribed podcast without downloading any of the other episodes.
IE: I subscribe to G4TV.com Web Shows Podcast specifically to watch the MMO Report episodes. I have no interest in any of the other episodes that form part of the podcast so I don't want to waste precious bandwidth downloading them automatically. Is there any way to setup a smart way to download only episodes with specific words or phrases in the title in the subscribed podcast? I love the auto download option of podcasts so I don't really want to have to manually go and check for new episodes to download.

No, there is no ftp server in the TC so it won't work.. upload the file to service. There are tons of places on the web whereby you can share a few files.. google sites excellent.

  • Nokia podcasting: Automatic Download doesn't autom...

Just confirming this, but I've found that on every phone that has the current version of Nokia Podcasting, the app does not disconnect after an Automatic Download, rendering that feature utterly pointless. Previously Podcasting could be left running, and it would download podcasts automatically from a specific access point according to the schedule, then hang up the connection. Thus you could wake up every morning with your podcasts pre-synced. On the new version, the disconnect doesn't happen, so you can:
    1) Get up and disconnect it manually, in which case you might as well have got out of bed and told it do download manually
    2) Don't bother disconnecting it, in which case the battery will be flattened within a couple of hours by the "idle" wireless connection.
Unfortunately some of the phones affected (e.g. N79) don't have the route certificate that allows you to install the previous version of the app.
Help I'm trapped in a sig factory.

I have the same problem, just showed up recently - very fricking annoying!!

  • Is there any way to get rid of this stupid feature in iTunes for Windows? You've subscribed to a podcast but have more than five unplayed episodes. iTunes will stop automatically downloading newer episodes.

s there any way to get rid of this stupid feature in iTunes for Windows?
You've subscribed to a podcast but have more than five unplayed episodes. iTunes will stop automatically downloading newer episodes. You may get the following message:
iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you have not listened to any episodes recently. Would you like to resume updating this podcast?
You can click Yes to continue downloading additional episodes. Or you can just listen to any part of any episode and a new episode will download at the next update.

I believe that feature was added in order to reduce wasted costs to the Podcaster.
Podcasts incur costs - that have to be paid for, by someone. That cost will be the cost of hosting the Podcast on a server somewhere and more crucially (with regard to your point), the cost of the Podcast being downloaded to your computer. Every download costs the Podcaster money (typically, charged by bytes downloaded).
If that Podcaster pays for the whole thing personally, obviously they want to keep down any unnecessary cost to themselves. If the Podcaster is earning money for his or her Podcast (typically from advertising within the programme) then obviously, the advertiser only wants to pay for advertisements heard by listeners. So a download, not heard by the downloader, is waste of the Podcaster's money or no payment from the advertiser.
My own experience is that I only have to resume downloading once per programme. I'm usually several episodes behind on two different Podcasts that I follow, but I do not recall having to repeat the resume Podcast after that first time.

  • Podcast not automatically downloading for subscribers.

Subscribers to our podcast have reported that the new episodes do not automatically download for them. I have no idea why. In the iTunes store the podcast seems to be working properly. All episodes are there and the most recent one can be played or downloaded directly from the store. But something seems to be broken with subscriptions and automatic downloads.
I tried to subscribe myself before submitting this question and didn't seem to be able to get any file to download.
The name of the podcast is Church of the Cross Boston.
I searched this forum for an answer and wasn't able to find one that matched this particular problem. Any help would be appreciated. I'm happy to provide more info if needed.

Please always include the URLs of your Store page and feed to save me having to search for them. For references, your Store page is at
    https://itunes.apple.com/podcast/church-of-the-cross/id317330237
and your feed is at http://www.cotcboston.org/Podcast.xml
You have introduced a fatal error into your feed which is rendering it unreadable. The title for the entry of 24 November 2013 is given as
    <title>Love's Durability & Permanence</title>
You cannot have an ampersand ('&') by itself in a feed because in XML it signifies the beginning of a code sequence; as this is never completed it blocks everything afterwards in the feed, and as this includes the closing tags it blocks the opening tags too.
You must replace the ampersand with either the word 'and' or the code
    &amp;

  • I can no longer manually select podcast episodes to download. It automatically downloads the most recent. I have been downloading a few episodes at a time due to the limited memory of my Shuffle. Is there a work-around?

I can no longer manually select podcast episodes to download. It automatically downloads the most recent. I have been downloading a few past episodes at a time due to limited memory of my Shuffle. Is there a work-around for this?

Similar problem here. My Ical refuses to edit or delete events. Viewing is possible, though sometimes the whole screen turns grey. Adding new events from mail is still possible. The task-pane completely disappeared. My local apple technic-centre messed about with disk utility for a bit and than told me to reinstall leopard. I could of course do that, but it seems to me that reinstalling Leopard just to fix iCal events is a bit invasive.
I tried also tried removing everything, installing a new copy of iCal from the leopard-cd, software updates, all to no avail.
At the moment I'm open to all suggestions that do not include a complete leopard reinstall.

  • Apple TV 2.0 Podcast Automatic Download

Has anyone found away to automatically download the latest versions of selected PodCasts? I'd like to stop syncing my podcasts from my iTunes PC and just use the Apple TV to manage my video podcasts.
Apple, PLEASE add this feature to the next version of Apple TV firmware. Thanks...

We're talking subscribing to Podcasts and TV Shows directly from Apple TV. This has nothing to do with iTunes in your computer

Not all content types are available in all countries - in each country Apple can only sell what they are licensed to (and in some cases what a country's laws allows them to). A list of what is available where is shown on this page : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3599

  • Linked PDFs in Muse don't seem to open or automatically download when I click on them in Firefox.

Linked PDFs in Muse don't seem to open or automatically download when I click on them in Firefox. Am I doing something wrong? Seems to work okay in Safari. This is for a Muse site uploaded to an FTP site.

PDFs are not web files.  Technically they're media files that require helper applications.  As such, your end users need the latest Acrobat reader & plug-ins installed for their browsers.  If either of these are not installed, the PDF links won't "do" anything when clicked. Similarly, some people set their preferences to download & launch PDF files in Acrobat Pro instead of their browser.
Since there's no way to tell which software & settings your end users have, you should follow the customary procedure of creating a small thumbnail image of the PDF to give users a visual clue of what the file contains along with a direct link to the PDF & instructions on how to right click to save the file to their hard drive.
