Podcasts Missing on iPod

Hi,
I have a 5th generation 30GB iPod, which worked fine until I recently did a "Restore iPod". Now its mostly working fine except for the following:
Podcasts appear in iTunes as expected, but after syncing my iPod, do not appear in the iPod's "Podcasts" menu -- this menu is blank on the iPod. The Podcasts themselves are on the iPod (I can find them under Genres = Podcasts), they just don't appear in the Podcasts menu.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
Tim

I am having the same problem, except this is the first time I have tried to see a video podcast on mine. At first the video was messed up, but Apple help indicated settings in the Quick Time control panels that corrected that. By not having a manual update, but automatic I do get an indication that an upload has occurred but I can't find it on the ipod -- even under genres=Podcast or albums or artists. I had just done a restore, but I guess it really isn't. What gives? At what point does Apple decide that this is a problem and updates its software?
For all of it vaunted user friendly S/W, I find iTunes very confusing: Why doesn't the iPod and iTunes have the same categories? Why isn't the distiction between audio and video podcasts uniform between the two platforms? The little movie on the web site helped alot.

  • Podcasts not showing up in 'Podcast' menu on Ipod.

Some of my pod casts show up but most do not. This is the same for my video podcasts. I can find them under my 'Music' heading but I cannot see them in podcasts or Video's.
Is there a setting I am missing. I have the latest update for I-Tunes but this has been this way since I bought my Ipod 6 months ago.
    Any help?

    I think it's a bug.
I had a similar problem when trying to delete podcasts from my Ipod.
On the iPod, they wouldn't show up in Podcasts, but there were a bunch of old ones hanging around in Music > Genres > Podcasts.
I finally had to get rid of them by unchecking them all in iTunes library. Then I set my iPod options to only update checked episodes. It finally deleted them all since noen were checked.
So you might try something similar - tell iTunes to update checked episodes.

  • Do I have to purchase a podcast app to play podcasts on my iPod/Touch?

I'm new to the iPod Touch.  I have used an iPod Nano.  I restored the iPod and now the Podcast app icon is missing.  My iTunes is synched with my Touch and the podcasts show up in the iTunes, but there's no way to open a podcast on the iPod Touch without an app icon.  Do I have to purchase an app for Podcasts?

Not quite sure why Tech101 assumed you meant only video Podcasts when you said Podcasts! (The Video/Podcasts menu will display only video Podcasts. the Podcasts menu will display both!)
However, as Bob Harris says, if you look on the Music menu and select More, you will see the Podcasts section. Note also, the Edit button at the top left of the More screen. Edit will allow you to move the Podcast button to the bottom of the Music screen (if you wish).
But there is one more thing. When the iPod is connected to iTunes, check (in iTunes) the Device/Podcasts pane to make sure the Sync Podcasts is set to the options you want. That could be why there are none on your Touch, which iTunes will recognise as a different iPod to the Nano, so don't assume that it will keep the same settings as it did for the Nano.

  • Audiobook or Podcast missing menu artwork?

After reading a few threads and posting some thoughts about audiobook artwork that seems to be missing from either the main menu or the music menu with ipod software, I thought I would do some research. I noticed that on the Apple website where you can preview demo videos for the various ipod models, you can see a short demo video for the ipod nano and the ipod classic (and the others). With both of these ipod models, there is a demo video for using audiobooks and using podcasts.
What I noticed is that the ipod classic demo video for audiobooks does in fact switch to artwork for the sample audiobook (Harry Potter) when the click wheel is moved over the audiobook option, before the click wheel is pressed. However, in the ipod nano demo video for audiobooks, the "artwork" side of the menu screen does not seem to switch to the artwork for the audiobook. What I did notice for both the ipod classic and nano is that the demo videos both show that there should also be some sort of podcast artwork as well. Both videos show a sample podcast from G4 with a yellow screen and both sample videos show this "artwork" (which might just be a random screen shot of the video file, like how the ipod does for movies/videos/etc. for main menu "artwork") on the right side of the menu. This happens to be a video podcast, but it does not provide an example of an audio podcast, because there is not much to see on the ipod screen in that case. Currently, I believe all ipod models have the grey podcast logo that appears on the right side of the menu and lists the number of active podcasts on the ipod (audio and video)...
Does anyone remember if older firmware from last year (when the ipod classic was just released) ever showed audiobook artwork or podcast "artwork" as it is shown in the Apple.com demo videos?

*** Apple! I just bought an ipad mini & expected it to be better than my ipod. Its bad enough that I lost paid audio books that I paid for because they are not covered in the cloud (I will never buy files not covered by the cloud again. And no I don't own a computer because I'm broke after spending money on a ipod that was old in less than a year so then bought your new release ipod & lots of money on itunes.) but geez GIVE ME AUDIO BOOK CHAPTER NAVIGATION OTHERWISE ITS POINTLESS TO USE MY IPAD MINI FOR AUDIO BOOKS AND DO IT QUICK CUZ I MIGHT JUST GO BUY A COMPETITORS DEVICE FOR IT. Get real Apple, I had to buy a Samsung Galixy S3 not because I like it better that the iphone 5 but because I had no choice due to your prices off of one of the major cell phone providers. Maybe I just should have bought a Galixy tab :/

  • Podcast Synchronization of Ipod and Hard Drive

    Hi,
I'm fairly new to the whole iTunes/iPod thingy, so this question might sound stupid, but what I wanna do is the following:
I've downloaded various podcast episodes of different podcasts to my hard drive. For some podcasts, I want to begin with the first episode and catch up with everything, and so I also downloaded those.
Now, my iPod has only limited memory space left, so I want to have the first episodes on my iPods to listen to them, and then gradually replace them with the next expisodes.
However, the synchronize option doesn't work here at all (or I'm too stupid to use it). And neither do I want to manually put the episodes on my iPod because this would be rather time-consuming.
First, I unticked the more recent episodes (those I don't want to listen to right now) in iTunes on my harddrive and figured, if I then click on sychronize (all), it would transfer all selected episodes. Well, that didn't work. It still put the deselected episodes on my iPod. Then I thought I would select certain podcasts and only synchronize those, but it still put all the deselected episodes for these podcasts on my iPod.
The options like "sychronize newest episodes" and similar ones don't work either.
So, for me, it would appear to be the very simplest solution to have a sychronize option like "synchronize all selected episodes" in the menu but no, there is none like this (I'm using iTunes 7). I have to admit I've only been introduced to the whole Apple / iTunes thingy because I got an iPod as a present and I have already found way too many things that are way too complicated and not practical, so this just seems to be another one of these issues. I would love if someone could prove me wrong and teach me how to accomplish what I described above without having to manually move around episodes every other day.
And another rather confusing thing: initially, I had set iTunes to download the latest episode for a given podcast after a refresh. Then, when I realized I wanted to start with the earlier episodes and save some memory space, I set it so it would do nothing. Now, however, it really does nothing. It doesn't even display when a new episode is available. For example, I had the latest episode of an extensive podcast series and deleted it in my iTunes because it took a lot of memory space. But now I don't even see this episode any longer. I'm sorry, I'm not good at describing problems but what I want is, I want to see a list of all available episodes that will be updated regularly but I don't want the latest episodes to be downloaded automatically.. how in the world can I do that?
Sorry for the long post, I'm just getting a bit frustrated after having spent half a day on trying to figure these seemingly simple issues out
Thanks a lot for any help!

You can delete songs from your iTunes/computer hard drive after transferring them to the iPod, and for this you need to set your iPod to manage the iPod content manually.
However, storing music on your iPod and nowhere else is an extremely risky option because when (and not if) there comes a time to restore your iPod, which is a very common fix for iPod problems, then all the music would be erased. If you no longer have the music in iTunes (or any other back up), then all that music would be lost.
At the very least back up your music to either cd or dvd before deleting it, particularly any purchased music/videos, as this would have to be bought again if it were lost. See this about backing up media.
How to back up your media in iTunes.
What if the iPod were lost/stolen/needed repair? Again, the music would lost. I strongly recommend a back up, and if computer hard drive space is in short supply, you should seriously consider an external hard drive. They are not expensive, and the cost is well worth it when compared to the loss of all your precious music.

  • Podcasts and Multiple iPods on the same Windows PC

    Hi there,
I have iTunes (6.04) on a Windows XP machine (I would use my powerbook G4 but its hard drive isn't big enough!)
I have two iPod nanos (one mine, one my girlfriend's) which sync with this iTunes and it works well except for a small glitch.
I have a few iTunes-subscribed podcasts on my nano, but my girlfriend has none - but the podcast setting in options seems to be generally for iTunes, not specifically for each iPod. This means that even with her Podcasts option set to manual, she has to have at least one podcast selected. She can't set podcasts to be off - because that would affect my subscriptions.
Anyone got any clues or workarounds?

If I disable podcasts for one iPod- it disables for all (or so it seems). So because I have enabled podcasts for my nano, it has to be enabled for my girlfriend's nano too - and it won't let me select no podcasts from the list of checkable subscriptions, so the best I can do is just select one ...
This isn't the worst problem, but it does mean that she's got content on her nano that she doesn't want which isn't ideal.
    Thanks.

How can I STOP iTunes from automatically trying to add podcasts to my iPod when I plug it in and sync it, so I can manage the files? I have already unchecked "Sync Podcasts" and "Automatically include,"yet EVERY time I sync it,it still transfers podcasts as the last step, and at other times randomly, when trying to just add some MP3's to a playlist, for example.  I can't seem to find any other option to uncheck, and can't find an answer from my so-far internet searching.

erict, you blew me away with that suggestion! It was something so simple I couldnt believe I hadnt thought of it! But in the end it didn't work, which I was really surprised about. On Windows anytime anything was moved itunes was hoplessly lost, but on this mac it still kept up with everything. I tried renaming folders, moving folders, and even renaming moved folders but it still kept trying to import.
I even went as far as deleting EVERYTHING i had moved to the Mac, which didnt really work. It still kept trying to import what wasnt there which made it continue to freeze up. However, after doing this it, the freezing was not nearly as bad. It gave me enough of a break to cancel it through the itunes dialog box at the top of the app. So in the end, thats all I really needed to do, only before I had deleted everything the freezing would not allow me to do it.
So now Im reimporting everything again, only slowly, and only a few Artists at a time.

  • How can I change the order of my podcasts on my iPod?

I am adding a lot of new podcasts to my iPod.  However they are being organized by most recent first and oldest last.  I want to hear them in release order without having to go backwards.  I can change the order in iTunes, but I can't seem to get my iPod to change the order.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Make a playlist with the order you want. The iPod Classic doesn't have options for reversing the order in the Podcasts display..

  • I can't delete an mp3 with it's 'media kind' changed to podcast on my Ipod touch since the Itunes 11.4 update

When I download long mp3 talk shows and place them on my Ipod touch I change their media kind to podcast to take advantage of the 2x speed and 30sec jump back. I have a smart playlist on my Ipod that shows all podcasts on the Ipod. Once I have listened to them I would normally attach my Ipod and highlight the file in the podcast smart playlist and then shift+del and the file is deleted from my Ipod.
Since the 11.4 update of Itunes there has been some alteration of this function. I can no longer shift+del the files from my Ipod. The ONLY way I can delete them is to change their 'media kind' back to mp3 and then shift+del them. This is a massive pain. Why must Itunes be messed up by every update.
A previous update rendered these mp3 media kind changed to podcast unplayable on your Ipod if you have 'skip when shuffling' checked...
I have an Ipod Touch 4th gen 32gb. I am running Itunes with windows XP.

  • How can I sync both Music files and Podcasts to my Ipod shuffle 4th gen?

I have been trying to do this for a very long time. I own an Ipod shuffle 4th generation and I want to be able to listen to music, podcasts, etc without having to switch between the different formats using Itunes. Everytime I try to sync music and podcasts to my Ipod, it will only play one of the two types but not both. I have plenty of space on my Ipod but it just won't sync music and podcasts together. I have tried using Smart playlists but whenever I try to add the different types of media, it shows nothing in the playlist. Any help with this would be appreciated.

If you are using automatic syncing, you need to set up syncing on the shuffle's Music tab and Podcasts tab in iTunes...
Select your shuffle in iTunes.  There is a bar of "tabs" (starting with Summary).
Click on Music there.  This Music tab is where you tell iTunes how to sync songs to the shuffle.  Sync Music is checkmarked, if you use automatic syncing.  Your entire iTunes Music library (plus podcasts) probably will not fit, so you can select to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Below that, make a selection of songs to sync by checkmarking playlists, artists, albums, and/or genres.  For example, if you want to keep it simple, create a new playlist in iTunes and put ALL songs you want on the shuffle on that playlist.  Back on the Music tab, find and checkmark only that one playlist under Playlists as your selection of songs.
Click on the Podcasts tab next.  This is where you tell iTunes how to sync podcasts to the shuffle.  Sync Podcasts is checkmarked.  Make you selection of podcast episodes below.
When you click Apply, your selection of songs and podcasts sync to the shuffle.  Going forward, all changes to your iTunes library that relate to your selection on the two tabs sync automatically when you connect the shuffle, or when you click Sync.
When you use the shuffle, podcasts do not play from the default All Songs list.  To play podcast episodes, you use the VoiceOver feature to select the podcast from the playlist menu.
This document has information about setting up and using VoiceOver on a shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4322
You can also play podcast episodes from a playlist.  If you put podcast episodes on a playlist, that playlist needs to be checkmarked on the Podcasts tab, where is says Include Episodes from Playlists.  You can then use VoiceOver to select that playlist from the playlist menu.  To play podcast episodes from a playlist, the shuffle's power switch must be in the play-in-order (middle) position.  The podcast episodes will then play in playlist order (as you organized them in iTunes before syncing).
