Podcasts no longer automatically download in iTunes 11

Hello all,
I've been Googling this and searching the Apple forums for some time now and can't seem to find this exact issue... close but not exact. If it's there and I missed it, please kindly direct me to said thread! Thank you!
Anyway, since upgrading to iTunes 11 (now using 11.1.3) - or maybe it was the upgrade to Mavericks, I'm really not sure - my subscribed podcasts no longer automatically download. When I hit the refresh arrow next to the podcast title all the new available podcasts appear in the list, but now I have to click the little cloud with the down arrow next to each individual podcast to start the download process. Extremely annoying! Especially if I haven't been able to download for a few days and have twelve or so in the queue.
None of my settings have changed, and I have double-checked the settings which are: Subscribed is checked; Keep: All Episodes; Download: Most Recent Episodes; Sort Order: Newest on Top; Play Order: Oldest First.
It used to be when I refreshed the podcast queue all new episodes started downloading immediately and automatically. Now, as I said I have to click on the cloud/down arrow to the right of each podcast. On occasion I will notice the podcast STILL did not download to my hard drive and instead was just streaming. I'll have to click again to download.
I have plenty of hard drive space on my external hard drive, which I have been using for years with no issue until now.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!
~ Angela

I was away from my home computer for 3 weeks.  I have lists of podcasts with the cloud  download symbol.  Is there a way to get (download)  all the missed podcasts onto iTunes so I can put them on an iPod for listening?

  • Can I turn off automatic download of Itunes Extras

This has been asked before by someone else but they recieved no answers so I'll try again.
Can I turn off automatic download of Itunes Extras.  I never use them and have to delete them and they hold up downloads of what I want?
    Thanks

Thanks Michael. I had no idea that that menu was even there, and it seems odd that it's not accessible frome the regular menu bar (or is it??). But indeed, I do see it now and this may help. The reason I said this approach is still less than ideal is that it will require me to remember all of the accidental unflaggings between syncs to my computer, and then manually reflag everything.... and if I want to be sure to do it right I'll have to take notes etc, which is quite a burden just to get around something that used to work effortlessly and automatically until Apple "improved" it... But thanks!

  • HT203433 I can't consistently disable automatic downloads from iTunes

I keep trying to disable automatic downloads from iTunes (don't want TV shows I've purchased through my Apple TV to download onto my computer), by going to iTunes - Preferences - Store - and it works for a while, then it starts to automatically download these TV shows again when I open iTunes. So it works some of the time, but not consistently. Very frustrating! Can anyone help?

After reading some of the similar posts on here, I tried removing all the items from the iTunes downloads folder on my hard drive, and signing out from the iTunes store. Signing out from the iTunes store solved the problem temporarily, but as soon as I signed in again, the automatic downloads started again. When I looked in the iTunes downloads folder, there they were again - the .tmp files of the TV shows I DON'T want on my computer. Now I have another problem. When I went back into iTunes to check if the Store Preferences were still set to NO automatic downloads, I found those choices greyed out. They were still set to disable automatic downloads (no tick in those boxes) but now I can't change them at all. So I must have thrown out something I needed when I threw the contents of the downloads folder into the trash, and then emptied the trash. I tried to get the trash back using Time Machine, but couldn't find it in there. Sighhhh! I'm at my wits end and now I'm afraid to make things any worse than they already are.

  • Podcasts no longer auto-downloading under iOS8

Sometime around iOS6, Apple changed the behaviour of the Podcasts app. Instead of having to open the app to check for new episodes it would, if suitably configured, download new episodes in the background.
iOS8 seems to have broken this feature. Since upgrading my 4S, Podcasts will notify me (via the badge) that new episodes are available but will not begin to download them until the app itself is launched. All of my settings are as you would expect; automatic downloads are on, downloads over 3G are on just in case I lose WiFi, check time is 1 hour, Background App Refresh is enabled. But after an arbitrary time running in the background the Podcasts app will just stop fetching new episodes, until it's launched again.
I used to be able to go to work in the morning safe in the knowledge that my new episodes were downloaded and waiting to be played. Now I have to remember to launch the Podcasts app at least five minutes before I leave the house, to be certain of downloading anything that was updated during the night. This is a huge step backwards.
The behaviour can be mitigated to a certain extent by making sure Podcasts is the last app to be launched before putting the iPhone to sleep at night. But it's still no guarantee, because the app's background processes still seem to die after a couple of hours. I see similar behaviour on my 4th generation iPad but anecdotal evidence so far suggests that the Podcasts app is not being shut down as frequently on the iPad as on the 4S. All of which suggests it's a resource issue, the iPad having more RAM and more efficient hardware than the 4S.
Reading some developer blogs there is vague information about a new feature in iOS8 that automatically kills "battery hungry" apps. But of course Apple are notoriously tight-lipped about the inner workings of their operating systems and so far I've not managed to find any information on how this feature operates, what its criteria might be for determining what constitutes a "battery hungry" app, or even whether it actually got implemented. What's interesting is that, looking in the new Battery Usage page of iOS8 on the 4S, Podcasts is nearly always at the top of that list with up to 44% usage in a given period. But this is hardly surprising as I listen to podcasts most of the working day with the phone in Airplane Mode.
Might this new iOS8 feature be so aggressively determined to kill hungry processes that it's crippling Apple's own built-in app's ability to do background downloads? I'm not a developer, so I don't have access to logs or any other useful debugging tools and this is a guess based on pure gut and experience. But something definitely seems to have changed in iOS8 and if Apple did introduce a battery-saving feature that kills background processes then it will be a staggering coincidence if the two things are unrelated.
If anyone else has seen this behaviour can you please add a comment with any ideas or interpretations you might have, or at least click the "I have this problem too" button. I intend to contact Apple directly (or as directly as is possible with Apple) and it would be nice to be able to point to a group of people with similar issues rather than just my lone voice in the wilderness.

Hmm. It looks as though I may have jumped the gun on this one.
A couple of days after posting the first reply I awoke to find that, of two podcasts that should have downloaded overnight, only one had actually downloaded. The other was flagged as new when I woke the phone but only began downloading when I opened the Podcasts app. I put this down to a possible feed problem and ignored it.
But over the next couple of days the pattern repeated. Some podcasts were downloading automatically while others weren't, especially overnight.
I'm not a developer but I am in communication with one, and he has demonstrated that there seems to be a new function in iOS8 that will kill certain background processes after almost exactly four hours of uptime. I have been able to see this first hand by looking at his app's log files.
Alas there are no such log files for the built-in Podcasts app, or at least not any available to the general user, so I can't know for certain whether this is what's happening here. But it definitely feels as though something might be timing out over longer periods than was happening before.
I need to do some more experimentation but here's what I think has happened here based on my experience and the vaguest of information from this blog post.
iOS8.0 introduced a couple of new battery saving features designed to curb the activities of "battery hungry" apps. The first of these features closed background apps at indeterminate intervals when they were perceived to be draining power, while the second killed any long-term background app after approximately four hours of uptime regardless of what it was doing.
The native Podcasts app accidentally fell foul of both of these new features, meaning its background downloading of subscribed podcasts was rendered almost useless.
iOS8.1 has changed things so that the "battery hungry" algorithm is less aggressive and no longer closes the Podcasts app. But the four hour timeout is still being applied, meaning that the Podcasts app will only do background downloads for a maximum of four hours before it needs restarting.
As I say, this is pure speculation but it certainly fits in with my experiences, the experiences of the developer I've spoken to, and what's written in that blog post regarding power management. I need to do some timed experiments to be certain, which may take a while, but it definitely feels as though only one of the issues has been fixed with this update.
I'm going to start by leaving the phone on continuously with the Podcasts app front and centre when I'm not using anything else. If my theory is correct, there should be no missed downloads because the four hour timeout won't get a chance to kick in. It's less than ideal because it's trying to prove a negative, but it's the best I can do.
    More news as it comes.

  • Subscribers complain that podcasts don't automatically download

    All,
We have received a complaint form someone trying to subscribe to our podcast (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=201681567 / FeedURL=http://www.sellingpower.com/video/rssiTunes.asp). They say that when they click subscribe they get an error message and iTunes does not automatically download the videos.
I cannot duplicate the error. If there is an error, can anyone let me know either how to recreate the error and/or fix it.
    Thank you in advance.

The extension to your feed URL is .asp. It should be .xml. Alter it and subscribing should work. However if you have submitted the .asp version to iTunes you may have some difficulty changing it. Possibly if you can incorporate the 'itunes:new-feed-url' tag into the file with the .xml version of the URL it may work.

  • Automatically downloading on iTunes store!?

Today my dad activated his £25 app card on his iPad. Upon going into the iTunes store front his account said 'You have £17.01 in your account'. We quickly went into the purchases and found 'Common's' new album downloading automicatically.
In no way did my father press any buttons, or even scroll near the purchase options. My experience with the iTunes store is that confirmation is asked for before the download begins, this was not asked for so by no means given.
Apart from the fact that a 57 year old man is not particulalry interested in rap music, it's not great that one of his Christmas presents has now become an inconvenience. Hopefully Apple will step up and sort out security issues very soon - has anybody else had this problem over the Christmas period?

I had the same problem with no automatic downloads of purchased Apps ...PLUS... I still recieved message "to use push notifications connect to itunes"
I found solution worked for me:
1- go to "Icloud keychain".  (Under settings----> Icloud).  go there and ENABLE it.  It will ask for passcode and so on.  so once enabled
2- restart your phone (normal power off)
3- reactivate imessage and facetime. (need a few minutes to reactivate)
    4- ALL WORKING  ;-)

  • Automatic download for iTunes Match?

I just purchased iTunes Match, while I like the idea, in fact really love the the idea, that it indexes all of the music I got from my CDs and associating it with my Apple ID, I'm also quite disappointed by the technical side of it. I got a pretty bad impression of it when it tried to upload the songs that are not in iTunes stores to Apple's server, it just too absolutely ages and breaks off every once in a while so I had to restat the upload process many times to get all my songs uploaded. Then I realised that on my iPhone, the songs were not downloaded automatically and every time I play it I must stream it from the Internet, and for some reason it won't even let me stream when I'm on 3G (the song names simply grey out in my library). Is there a way so that my library is automatically downloaded to all of my devices? And when I add a new song not from the iTunes store can I set it so it automatically add that too on my iOS devices?
Another thing is that I have two Macs, my MacBook Pro and my iMac, my iTunes library on my MBP is my primary one and I want to mirror that on my iMac, however when I tried to turn on iTune Match a message popped up saying only one computer can be matched. Can I make it so that my library on the iMac is matched from my Macbook Pro?

You'd be better off asking in the dedicated iTunes Match forum: https://discussions.apple.com/community/itunes/itunes_match
