Podcasts Sort Order

I don't know where else to suggest this to the Apple Podcasts people, but one of the biggest annoyances with this app for me is that the sort order for each Podcast and the Unplayed Podcasts lists is newest to oldest, this is exactly opposite of what I'd want.  I've been listening to Podcasts with iTunes and my iPhone since the beginning.  I have always had 2 smart playlists with my unplayed podcasts in them, one sorted by shortest to longest and the other sorted by release date oldest to newest.  I've had to live with every other iTunes version breaking the syncing of the Podcast Smart Playlist order and was ecstatic when the Podcasts app came out, thinking I might not have to deal with this anymore, but no.....and I've checked every release and still no better.  I end up going back to my (broken again since last iTunes update) sync'd Smart Playlists in Music.  *sigh*  It's almost enough to drive me to one of the 3rd party apps, but I like to be able to walk in from listening to Podcasts, sync my phone and continue listening to the podcasts on my Mac, none of the 3rd parties give me a way to do that, and that's even broke when you uses the Podcasts app.  So again, back to the Music app.

I can't agree more.
I remember many moons ago when someone changed the podcast sorting order in iTunes and caused this exact same problem—all of your podcasts were in the reverse order that you'd want to listen to them. Fortunately someone was listening (no pun intended) and it was fixed again in the next relase.
What's shocking to me is that this is the third (THIRD!) update to the Podcast app and this problem is still with us. Worse, Apple has eliminated the podcasts from the iTunes and Video apps, where you could play them in the correct order.
This is a podcast app. A PODCAST APP! It's only job is to play podcasts. Who plays podcasts backwards? You'd think this would be bug #1.
Sorry for the rant, but I've almost had to stop listenting to podcasts on my iPhone becuse this app is so broken and there are no alternatives. Normally I listent to podcasts at the gym or while driving, but now you have to do so much fiddling with the app (quick! stop the next one playing, go back to the menu, try to find where you are in the list, start the real next one) that I've just put my iPhone away.

  • Remote Podcast Sort Order a Hot Mess

I haven't applied the latest in cryptographic logic to the problem, but my unplayed podcast list appears in no comprehensible order and I can not find a way to change the sort order.
Starting to see a lot of this type of QA issue with the Apple products. Great stuff, generally speaking, but where is the discipline?

Yep.  It's out of control.  Like "schitzephrenic nonsense" out of control.
Come on, Apple.  Get it together.

  • Playlist sort order not carried to iTouch

After upgrade to IOS 5, playlist (podcasts) sort order in iTunes on MBP is not maintained when syncing w/ iTouch.  No options on iTouch to sort.
    Thoughts or bug?
Related...one podcast would not purge from iTouch via sync, so had to restore iTouch.  Did not fix sort order transfer problem.

I am also having the same problem. Running the newest iTunes and iPhone software my smart playlists are not working correctly. My "Recently Added" is correct in iTunes, and if I look at the playlist on my iPhone info in iTunes it is correct there, but the actual playlist on my iPhone is populated entirely with audiobook files. I have tried deleting and recreating the playlist which gives the same results. I have also specified that items within the playlist should be music files only and still get the same results.
I have a playlist that's Top 50 Most Played that's also not behaving properly (ie correct in iTunes but not on my iPhone).
    Any suggestions?

  • Bug: iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 podcast smart playlist sort order and how to fix.

There seems to be a bug in iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 involving the sort order of a smart playlist of podcasts. I created such a playlist and sorted by release date on iTunes but I noticed it had a different sort order on the iPod Touch.
After playing around with it a bit I found that the only way to preserve the sort order that I have in iTunes on the iPod Touch is to uncheck "Live Updating" in the smart playlist.

Confirming this incredibly annoying bug.  Basic list sorting not working... real bottom shelf work apple.
workaround update:  limit to must be turned on, set it to an absurdly high number if you don't want to actually limit the playlist, then one of the sortby options in that submenu will work.   The live update checkbox is irrelevant from experimentation.
This workaround does NOT fix the fundamental problem: sort order from itunes in smart playlists is not being synced and preserved in ios5 devices.
This is the latest in a long string of debacles which is making me seriously consider swapping to debian stable. (snow leopard to lion was a severe downgrade in performance for anyone doing heavy multitasking.. scheduling is FUBAR... when a command option escape beachballs on a brand new core 17 machine, your OS has serious problems with nice levels)

  • Change sort order of Podcasts on iPod?

In iTunes, my podcasts are sorted in ascending order according by the Release Date field. I've also made sure that the different parts of a certain podcast episode has proper Track Numbers.
However, on my 5.5G iPod, the podcasts are sorted in a descending order (newest first) which plays everything backwards (i.e. a podcast with 4 parts play's part 4 first).
How can I change the sort order of my podcasts on my iPod?
I've noticed that even if all my podcasts have been given Track Numbers (usually 1-4 per episode), when they play on my iPod, it says "1 of 1" instead of "1 of 4" etc. Why is that?
Also, the most annoying thing is that after a podcast has played, I'm thrown out back to the main Podcast Menu. I then have to go back into Podcasts, choose the Podcast folder and then choose the next podcast to listen to. Very weird behavior.
My iPod is set to automatically sync with iTunes, so I can't change anything in iPod playlists in iTunes

i discovered this completely by accident.
connect your iPod to your computer.
click the podcast bit of your iPod on the left hand side. (so it brings up which podcasts you have on your iPod)
you can then click 'release date' to change the order from either newest or oldest first.
unfortunately you can only do this for your entire podcast collection. i subscribe to some audiobook podcasts, and for some reason the episodes seem to have been released with the earlier episodes on later dates, meaning listening to the sequentially would mean listening to them backwards, but otherwise this works perfectly.
    hope that helps.

  • What's the sort order for podcasts on the shuffle?

Hi all... Can someone tell me how the iPod Shuffle orders podcasts? I've seen MANY posts saying there's no way to manually sort podcasts on the shuffle (which is crazy IMO), but at least if I know how it's ordering the podcasts that'll help me identify which one is next.
I added 15 podcasts to the shuffle, and sorting by every category I can find none that matches the order the shuffle places the podcasts in.
So first question -- what order are the podcasts stored in?
And second question -- Why the heck did Apple do this? Why can't podcasts just be treated like standard MP3 songs?
And finally if there's no answer to either of these, is there anyway to get ipodderx to sync to the ipod shuffle? I love itunes, but if it's going to hender my hardware I'll switch to something else.
Thanks for any help on this, and take care --
    Sam

    Hi Dean,
I'm wondering if something's wrong with my podcast, because that's not what happens on mine. For example I have my podcasts in this order:
    NPR Technology
    Haunted New Jersey
    Autumn in New England
    Hometown Tales Podcast
And even after selecting File then Update iPod and even right-clicking on ipod and selecting Copy to Play Order the order of the podcasts are :
    Haunted New Jersey
    Hometown Tales Podcast
    NPR Technology
    Hometown Tale Podcast
Nothing I've done sorts the podcasts as they should be sort. Also i set it to not show the ipod unless it's connected, and when I sort the podcasts as I want, Update ipod, and plug ipod, plugging it back in shows the wacky sort order they're stored on the ipod. I can rearrange again, update again, eject and plug back in, and the crazy sort order (not mine) is back.
    Is there something I'm missing????

  • When I download a podcast on my iPhone why is the release date missing? This really screws up the sort order.

when I download a podcast on my iPhone why is the release date missing? This really screws up the sort order.

    Hello yung ron,
It may be that your iPhone's set to sync automatically, which can potentially remove any music that's been added to the device. It may help to set the device to 'manual mode,' so that you have complete and total control over what content is on the device.

  • IPod classic - sort order of podcasts

I have a new iPod Classic 160 GB. Love it so far, but it has one annoying thing. In iTunes, I have my podcasts sorted from oldest to newest. There are some podcasts, like news and training podcasts that need to be listened from oldest to newest or the content gets confusing when listening out of order. When I sync podcasts to my iPod, it refuses to sort from oldest to newest (even though when I look at the sort order of my iPod in iTunes it does show the order correct, just not on the actual iPod). So when I start a podcast, it automatically plays going from newest to oldest, which is not what I want. Any way I can change that?

This drives me crazy as well. I hope they fix this in a firmware update.

  • Sort Order of All Unplayed Episodes

The sort order of all unplayed episodes is from Newest to Oldest, which is backwards for me.
Why would I listen to the Newest episode first? It completely breaks any chronology of the podcasts!
I found that you can change this for individual podcasts if you find the details by clicking on the podcast title to open its preferences, but the big list does not have the option.
Please, give me the option to ORDER THE UNPLAYED EPISODES OLDEST AT TOP TO NEWEST AT BOTTOM!
    Thanks, in advance.

I was surprised to see you can/must set this on a podcast-by-podcast basis, but it is hard to argue with having finer control. Oldest to newest seems like a slightly more logical default, but that may just be personal preference.
Not to split off in a new direction, but if I then subscribe to a podcast in Podcasts app that I already subscribe to in iTunes, is it recommended I turn off syncing between iTunes and my iPhone for that podcast? Or will this question basically go away when iOS 6.0 is released?
Do the Podcasts app and the Music/iPod app share podcast files? Or will they be duplicated on my iPhone?
    Tom
The podcasts will duplicate themselves on your device. I turned off podcast syncing on my devices. But the weird thing is that when I sync, podcasts then copy themselves to my iTunes library. Either sync or don't, but don't copy to both.

  • ITunes U Sort Order Issue

I purchase a lot of audio courses from a company called the Teaching Company. I buy and download them as MP3's and they've worked great on all my iPods (I have a nano, a classic, and a touch 64GB). I previously kept all of the course lectures in my Audiobook section to keep them separate from my music and podcasts and other media. This was fine until I decided to purchase an Audible account and began to build up a large library of audiobooks as well. When I got my brand new 64GB iPod Touch and the new iTunes, I saw that iTunes U was now a separate entity within my library. So, for organizational purposes and to allow me to better fine-tuning of my sync preferences (I much more media than could ever fit on any of my iPods at one time), I moved all my educational and lecture media out of my Audiobooks area and into iTunes U by editing the tags through "get info".
This has worked just fine except for one mysterious problem.
When I view any of these audio courses (each course is an album) in iTunes, they display fine in normal sort order by track number. But when I go to listen to them on my iPod, the sort order is all jumbled up and all the tracks are out of order. So I cannot listen to the classes from one lecture to another, at the end of each lecture I must exit back to the album and FIND the next lecture. They appear to be sorted in no obvious order (not alphabetical, not by name, not by track number). Again, they are set to sort by track number in iTunes and they display (and play) perfectly straight through in iTunes. But on my iPod, the sort order is completely messed up.
So, what's going on? Why? And how can I fix it??

    Vague789 wrote:
Set your track numbers correctly (by right clicking, clinking 'Get Info' and clicking on the info tab), and make sure you also set the totals (e.g. 12 of 18 - the "of 18" is what I mean by the totals). This sorted it out on my iPod.
This worked for me for my Teaching Company files. They were all jumbled previously because they took the track numbers from the default import from the internet. Once I changed it, no problem.
It would be better if Apple allowed just a dragging, or if there was a quick tool, but at least this works.
I had previously been using "Join Together" for stuff like this. I think I like this method better, though. I can still keep the individual lecture files on a playlist, but not have to worry about all the separate titles in a general listing.

  • Sort Order on Iphone not the same as on Itunes

Hi, after one of the recent Itunes updates I noticed the sorted order on my play lists is no the same on the phone.
I like to sort by date modified so that my pod casts are in the proper order on the phone. I can work around this by manually picking the next podcast, but still the problem remains and is a software issue which should be fixed.
    So, anyone else notice this?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Yeh I've noticed the same thing, ever since this new iTunes update.
Clearly in iTunes I have my songs sorted in alphabetical order but when I sync to my iTouch the same playlist in the iTouch sorts in a random order.
My smart playlists in iTunes are sorted in alphabetical order, when I sync to my iTouch, all the songs muddle. Whereas normal playlist will sort in the order as I tell them to in iTunes, which follows up on the iTouch.
    Weird :S

  • Sort order of Price Lists

My customer has recently upgraded from 2007A PL 42 to 8.81 PL 7. Before upgrade all pricelists are
displayed in item code sort order. After upgrade, the sort order seems almost random.
Customer maintains 175 different pricelists (mainly supplier pricelists) Customer needs to look up an
item price from a specific price list - goes to Inventory / Price lists / Price Lists, selects the required
price list and double clicks on the row number which then displays itemcodes, item descriptions, base
    price and unit price.
Before upgrade, the customer could immediately start typing the item code and quickly get the required
price. Now they must resort the displayed list by item code first, then start typing the item code.
Process that used to be quick now takes more time. Customer can't understand why something that
was working well for them has been changed to make life difficult
At first I thought that the lists were now being sorted by description but the order changes even when
double clicking at the top of the description column.
Customer would like an option as to how they want the list displayed or for it to go back to how it was.
Customer's sales reps need to find prices quickly - can't understand why the sort order has changed

  • Change sort order manually

Anyone noticed that in iTunes 7.2 you can no longer manually change the songs sort order? When I copy podcasts or songs on my iPod, sometimes I want to change the order in which they will play. In 7.1.1 I could simply upload the songs and drag and drop songs within iTunes to change the sort order. Since I have upgraded to 7.2, this does not work. Any idea ?
    Dell Latitude   Windows Vista

I know what you mean. I just got the Queens of the Stone Age CD and I have song that didn't get put onto the CD.
I'd like to put it on as the 8th track (out of 12) on the CD, but it won't move it. I've tried everything I can think of, including rearranging the tracks, deleting it and re-uploading it.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Genre sort in Browser, auto sync, sort order

I just updated to 3.1.1 and iTunes 9.0. Now Genre is missing in the browser. How can I get it back? Also none of my playlist sync in auto. I have to manually manage it. I rarely use it for music, just for listening to stories and podcasts, so it's important to have them in the correct order for listening, i.e. chapters. Now the playlist doesn't show up on the itouch sorted correctly.
    1. Doesn't have Genre in Browser. 2. Doesn't auto sync. 3. Sort order is messed up between iTunes and iTouch. 4. Is it caused by 3.1.1 or iTunes 9.0? Does anyone know how to fix these issues? I don't have an old download of iTunes 8 to uninstall 9 and reinstall 8. iTouch 3.1.1 can't be uninstalled. Shadow

    shadow1953 wrote:

iTunes 9 changed the browser to a column on the left side (by default), but you can go back to how it was on top, see the View/Column Browser menu. You can have multiple filters (Artist, Album, Composer, etc.) either as a column on the left, or across the top.
    shadow1953 wrote:

You have to be doing something wrong since auto-sync does work. Make sure your iPod is in auto-sync mode -- if you change the sync mode, make sure you click the "Apply" button -- if you don't, it won't change. If you're not syncing your entire library, then make sure that you've selected the playlists you want loaded onto the Touch.
    shadow1953 wrote:
    3. Sort order is messed up between iTunes and iTouch.
Are you referring to the sort order within a playlist, or the sort order of all your playlist names? I know that the playlist name sorting has changed (again) such that punctuaion comes first, then letters, then numbers. If you're referring to the sort order of the items within a playlist, then it may be a bug -- there are reports of problems with the sorting of podcasts within playlists, so maybe the same is true for books?

    Not sure, could be either.

You can get down-rev versions of iTunes at sites like filehippo (there are others). Keep in mind though that your "iTunes Library.itl" file was changed with iTunes 9 and is not backward-compatible. You'll have to look for the old .itl file in your "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder (check the date of these .itl files). If you fid the .itl file from iTunes 8, just replace the current one and then uninstall iTunes as well as "Apple Mobile Device Services" and Quicktime, then install iTunes 8.
You can go back to a prior OS version on your Touch if you have the native file (you would if you previously did a firmware update, it stays on your computer). If you updated to 3.0 then you can go back to it by holding the SHIFT key as you click the Restore button (use the OPT key on a Mac) and then select the 3.0 version. You can't go back to 2.x in this manner, but there is a different way to go back to 2.x if you ever want to (won't go into that here).

  • Get photos on iPad in same sort order as in Aperture

Have newest, latest OS, iOS, and Aperure and Apps on my iPad ... all current.
When I setup photos in a album in Aperture then sync the album to my iPad using iTunes to the Photos App, the images are sometimes
several inages are placed in a different order in Photos than they are in Aperture
Viewing them and setting up slide shows is uselees if I am not able to conrol the order I desire.
I need to kow how to have them apper on the iPad "my way" if that is possible.
In my work flow, images in Aperture are sorted by date, then a few recent edits that strip the original date are manually placed where they
belong. So far it has never been the ones moved that leave the desired sort order. However, moving a couple of photos in the Aperture
Album changes the sort selection from Date to Manual sort order. Have no idea if this contributes to the problem. I would just like
the images to reamain as established in Aperture.
    Help would be greatly appreciated

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply. This worked but it doesnt seem to be consistent.. not sure if the fact that I have a smart playlist based on another smart playlist (only because I want 5 anded conditions + 1 or'd which is playcount=0) and hence something goes wrong?
Any better way overall to manage these?  I now have 4 pairs of these.
Also, any way to have a Smart Playlist that selects only video?  They have the Media Kind = Podcast, but no Media Type = Video..
    Many thanks,
