Podcasts stop updating in itunes 12

Recently I have had to manually keep updating my list of podcasts to get new episodes to download. Even when I use the refresh button it will not show new episodes even if new episodes are available, I have to right-click on each podcast and "View in iTunes" to retrieve new episodes.
I understand that podcasts will stop updating after 5 unplayed episodes but does that mean 5 total? Or per podcast? I usually update once a week and listen to around 7 different podcasts so some of these will have a couple unplayed every week before I mark them as played. (I listen on my iPod classic, not sure if this is relevant)
How do I ensure that my iTunes keeps updating the podcasts without using that external script I have seen circulating?
When iTunes 12 was first released all of my podcasts seemed to update with successful regularity. The past couple weeks it hasn't refreshed podcasts successfully at all.
Any ideas?

Pretty much the same problem here. Podcasts are set to update every hour. For some reason in iTunes 11 it would not work at all. Updating to 12.0.1. seemed to fix the problem...at least for a month or so. Now it will not update podcasts, even manually. At the current time, I have to mount each podcast in iTunes Store, look to find new episodes, and try to download them that way -- so far the success rate on that is 75%, compared to 0% when using the Refresh button or manually right-clicking and selecting "Refresh Podcast".
With the number of podcasts in my queue, it's not very practical to mount each one in the Store (some would have to be done daily). I have no "unplayed episode" issue to worry about (I listen to them all -- being accidentally retired makes that easy to deal with).

  • My podcast stopped updating in iTunes

    Hi there,
I've been doing a podcast for a bit over a year.  About a month ago it stopped updating in iTunes and I don't know why.  I've checked out our feed on feedvalidator.org and it seems to be ok.  We use podbean to host it.  I emailed their support people and they said everything checks out on their end so I'm not sure where to go from here.
the podcast is in the iTunes store as The Winchester Congress
The host website address is winchestercongress.podbean.com
Any help or clues as to what's up with this would be appreciated.
    -Dave

    Your Store page is at
    https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/winchestercongress/id514506457?mt=2
    and your feed is at
    http://winchestercongress.podbean.com/feed/
Please always include these when you have a question.
Your episode of 7 June appears in the Store, which is quick. However it's not possible to subscribe to the feed; iTunes brings up an error saying it can't connect for an unknown reason. The feed works in FireFox and appears to be OK.
There is no obvious reason for this. We've occasionally seen feed which could be read in iTunes but not in the Store, but not the other way round.
It doesn't appear to be anything to do with the content of the feed. I can only suggest that you ask Podbean to try subscribing and see whether they get the same error, and if so to look at their server logs.

  • Alex Jones Podcast stops updating constantly

Why does the Alex Jones show Podcast stop updating all the time with only a few days of not listening while ALL my other Podcasts (some that haven't even produced a new Podcast in years) don't do this for months (or ever)? This gets REALLY old as I'm syncing my iPhone for my long commute to work, when I realize I only have the Alex Jones Podcast I listened to two days ago. I look in iTunes and once again I have the and it stopped downloading due to inactivity?
Who, what, where does this parameter to stop updating get defined? 3-4 days of not listening is all it takes for iTunes to decide not to download this Podcast?

There is no setting by which the produce of the podcast can affect this. The 'facility' is inbuilt to iTunes and cannot be adjusted. Please see this Tech Note:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA23353
    which states:
You've subscribed to a podcast but have more than five unplayed episodes. iTunes will stop automatically downloading newer episodes. You may get the following message:
iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you have not listened to any episodes recently. Would you like to resume updating this podcast?
You can click Yes to continue downloading additional episodes. Or you can just listen to any part of any episode and a new episode will download at the next update.
Note that it's the number of episodes, not the time since you last listened, hence your apparent discrepancy. The Alex Jones Podcast is updating almost daily: some podcast update weekly or monthly (or even longer).
For Mac users there is an AppleScript available which will apparently deal with this (I've not tried it):

  • While switching web hosting services my podcast quit updating on iTunes. What do I do?

While switching web hosting services my podcast quit updating on iTunes. What do I do? My RSS URL is http://www.soapboxheroescc.com/podcast/feed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

There is no file at that URL, only an error message.
    Is this your podcast -
    https://itunes.apple.com/podcast/soap-box-heroessoap-box-heroes/id682605938
This is using the feed at
    http://feeds.feedburner.com/SoapBoxHeroessoapBoxHeroesPodcast
which has four episodes; however there are no 'enclosure' tags containing the URLs of playable media, so as iTunes does not show episodes with no playable media the podcast shows as empty.
I could only guess that that is your podcast from the title given in the error message for the URL you quote as you haven't given any further information.
If it is, then the Feedburner feed must be working from a feed you've created, though there's no way of knowing its URL. You can move Feedburner to using a different feed easily enough, or get the feed it's using working properly, and then the podcast will be subscribable again and the Store will catch up after a few days.

  • Why did my daily podcasts stop updating?

All of my daily updates of news podcasts stopped updating a short time ago. I can't find any place to update these podcasts of television broadcast news shows. How can I update these free commercial podcasts?

  • Podcast not updating in iTunes application

My podcast shows up fine in my RSS feed on my server.  It shows up fine in the iTune Store.
My podcast is NOT showing up in my iTunes Application feed and shows the like there is a broken link somewhere when I try to "Update Podcast".
    My RSS feed:
    feed://www.nathan-russell.com/ovs/ovs.xml
    iTunes preview:
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-overnight-variety-show/id420386052
I recently updated my feed with 2 new episodes on August 22nd, 2011.  Normally it doesn't take 4 days to update in my iTunes Application.  I've previously used the email that Apple sent upon approval of my podcast to ping my server and "update" my iTunes Application to show the most recent additions but the link they provided in that email ( https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/pingPodcast?id=420386052 ) has stopped working as well.
Please help me determine why my updated RSS feed is not showing up in the subscription to my own podcast within the iTunes Application itself.
    Thank you kindly!

You have rendered your feed invalid. 'Episode 16 - promo' contains two unescaped ampersands, one in the 'itunes:summary' tag and once in the 'description' tag"
'A.J. Finney, Dallas Orbiter & Jesse Joyce.'
An ampersand by itself indicates the start of a code sequence which is never terminated, thus rendering the entire feed unreadable.
Oddly enough, this text appears successfully in the iTunes Store page: did you change it to the uncoded ampersand at a later stage? Usually this mistake stops the Store page updating as soon as it's in the feed.
You need to replace both ampersands with the code & or the word 'and'. Once you do this the feed will work.
The 'ping' facility has been withdrawn from the iTunes Store for some time now (I'm not convinced that it ever worked anyway) - you just have to wait for the Store to update in its own time (usually 1-2 days).

  • ITunes Podcasts Stopped Updating With Upgrade

    Hi,
I posted this once before but I've just read on some other posts that .dll files are the problem with some other issues. Is it possible I have a corrupted .dll file that is not letting podcasts update? I've tried uninstalling, re-installing and even downgrading to no avail. I'm running XP. Thanks in advance...

    Hey leeltd!
Try using the information in the following article to make sure that your iTunes is set to automatically look for new episodes:

  • Podcast not updating in itunes app on ipad

I submitted an RSS feed to itunes and was accepted.  At the time when I was accepted I had one video in my podcast and I was able to access this video via my ipad.  Since then I have used feedforall to update my rss feed.  I see the updates when I access the podcast from itunes on my computer however when I access the podcast through itunes on my ipad the new videos are not showing up.  I thought at first the issue was the codec but the video that shows up is the same as the videos that don't.
Here is the rss feed URL: www.arinc.com/podcast/arinc.xml
And, on itunes the podcast is called "ARINC Media Podcast"
    Thanks in advance!

I don't have an iPad so I can't advise on that: I don't know how it accesses podcasts.
However what I can tell you is that the Store shows only one episode, 'Defense Systems'. This is the earliest, though only by just under two-and-a-half hours. All episodes date from 12th or 13th December - yesterday and today.
The iTunes Store caches the feed and visits it periodically to check for updates, so it usually takes 1-2 days for new episodes to appear there, though they appear immediately for subscribers, whose iTunes application reads the feed directly.
It therefore seems probably that your feed was last checked between 1521 and 1849 yesterday, and so won't be checked until, probably, tomorrow or perhaps the day after: at which point all the existing episodes will appear there. All this behaviour is quite normal.
As I say, I don't know about iPad and podcasts, but if it reads the Store rather than the feed you would get the same behaviour.
I should give it a couple of days or so and see what happens.

  • Podcast stops updating due to not being listened to

Apple, come on, give us a feature to turn this off.
    It's so irritating !
Everyone uses a system in a different fashion, why impose this restriction ?

This is why I come here today, to ask if we could turn this OFF!!! I too find it incredibly annoying.
I subscribe to a lot of podcasts, I may not get around to listening to them, at some point I go to scroll through them, say when I'm on a plane and looking for some entertainment and I find they are a week or two outdated, because iTunes took it upon itself to stop downloading them.
I find myself clicking on the "would you like to resume downloading again?" alot.
iTunes: when I want you to think for me, I will tell you to!
    GRRRRRR!!!!!

  • Podcast stopped updating...

Any way, besides listening to each one, to prevent a podcast from not downloading automatically?
I often don't listen to some for a while but like to have the current episodes.
    Thanks.

Just click the "!" next to the title of the podcast. This is the general indicator of an error related to the podcast. If you get the message about "updating stopped because you haven't listened" then click OK to tell it to resume updates.
I have to do this all the time because I leave some shows alone for long stretches, and then dive in and get caught up in a flurry.

  • Podcast not updating on iTunes Music Store but it's ok on Feed

Hi, we've been posting a podcast every two weeks on iTunes Music Store for more than a year, the podcast name is sushi pop. This is the feed that we're using http://feeds.feedburner.com/ColissioncomSushiPop but since almost a month it hasn't been published on iTunes Music Store, anyone could help us with this?  Thanks a lot, have a nice day.

Neither the Store nor iTunes when subscribing is showing episodes 25 and 26.
Your earlier episodes each have two 'enclosure' tags: if both contained playable media iTunes would ignore the second (you can't have more than one enclosure per episode). However in each case the first one contains a bit.ly URL which downloads the media file. This is not acceptable to iTunes, which thus defaults to the second enclosure, which does contain a playable URL. (The test is that the URL, when pasted into a browser's address bar, plays the episode in the browser, not downloads it.)
However episodes 25 and 26 have only one enclosure each, containing a bit.ly URL, again downloading the file. Since the episode contains no playable media iTunes does not display it.
You need to stick to one enclosure, containing a direct URL to the media file.

  • My podcast stop posting in iTunes!

I use Cyberduck and Espresso to edit and host our podcast and a few weeks ago they stoped posting on iTunes. Not sure why

It's not really possible to comment unless you would like to publish the URLs of both your feed and the Store page - this latter can be found by control-clicking on the podcast image (or where it should be) - and choosing 'Copy link'.  Please include the http:// in both cases to make the links clickable.

  • Podcast URLs problem in iTunes 8.1

Upon upgrading to version 8.1 most of my podcasts work fine except for one in particular. It gives me the error message:
""http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/xml/730vodcastm4v.xml" does not seem to be a valid Podcast URL.
Please check that you have entered the correct URL and try again."
The xml file certainly does exist, and the podcast stopped updating since I upgraded to 8.1.
I suspect that the problem is probably from the period in the URL, particular the '/7.30/' bit. Removing that gives the general URL could not be found error.
Does anyone know anything about this error and if it is indeed the upgrade to version 8.1 that caused it?

I don't think it's the upgrade that has caused this. I'm not an expert, but the "_m4v" doesn't seem correct to me.
A *Podcast URL* is the address of the feed of the whole programme series, but the "_m4v" part in your URL appears to indicate an individual movie, which is why you get the message that it's not a valid Podcast URL. If I take out the "_m4v" and leave the rest as a URL, I get a different message, one that says "There was a problem downloading "http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/xml/730_vodcast.xml". That would suggest that I'm getting closer to the feed URL. I've tried several more combinations, but can't find the correct one.
I've tracked down the page with this Podcast URL on it, http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/vodcast.htm and the address you gave is the one they use on that page. But it's wrong! Believe it or not, someone at ABC has goofed - medium time.
To expand on the feed that I mentioned earlier; think of it as the "main menu" of the programme, which is updated by ABC with the new episodes. When iTunes checks for new episodes for all your subscriptions, it looks up the "main menu" which tells iTunes that there is a new episode that you do not have. Some "magic" is performed which then downloads the episode to your iTunes.
I suggest you contact the station and point out that even if they think the URL is correct, iTunes cannot find the feed, which indicates that they (ABC) need to fix it at their end.
Let us know how you get on.
    Phil

  • How can I make sure iTunes doesn't stop updating my podcasts

OK I'm subscribed to multiple podcasts, but I don't always get a chance to listen to them so some of them will stop updating and it says something like "iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you haven't listened to any episodes lately".
How can I make sure it doesn't do that? When I do get to listen to my podcasts, I would really like it if they weren't 3 weeks old.
    Message was edited by: MacAttakk

someone made a script that fixes this. It seems to work for me. If you want it to do it automatically just make an iCal even for every 3 days or something that runs this script.
