Poineer DVR-105 doesn't see media, doesn't spin

My problem is very similar to many that I have read here, but I thought that I would start a new posting just so that it’s easier to keep track of things. My DVD-R / RW stopped working a few days ago. It will not mount any blank media, DVD or CD, nor will it mount any pre recorded media, DVD or CD. Pushing the eject button on the keyboard opens and closes the drive just fine, It is still an option for burning in Toast Titanium 6. It is viewable in the System Profiler. If I hold the door open when I hit the eject button I can see that the green light comes on while the tray is in transit, but I can hear no sound coming from the drive that would indicate that is is even spinning. No disk images will show up on the desktop, and when attempting to burn with either DVD Studio pro 2 or Toast Titanium 6 it will spit the disk back out and then i will get a message that there is no disc in the tray.
My system is as follows:
Machine Model: Power Mac G4 (Mirror Door)
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.2)
Number Of CPUs: 2
CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.5.7f1
The Drive in question is as follows:
Manufacturer: PIONEER
Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105
Revision: 1.30
Serial Number: CDDL191530WL
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal
I am running OS 10.3.9 and I have both the Superdrive and a Combodrive. Until the middle of last week the drive worked (the Combodrive works fine.) I have trashed the preferences, Run Disk Warrior, Restarted holding down Command S and run /sbin/fsck -f and then rebooted and repaired disk permissions. I have tried trashing the 4 or 5 preference files under my user library that have been suggested in other posts but did not see all of them. I have also tried creating a second account on my system to see if it would mount there with no luck. In addition to this I have done a clean install of the OS to try and deal with this, and some other problems that I have been having, all with no luck.
I am wondering if 10.3.9 is the culprit, as it seems to be a common denominator in other posts describing similar problems, or is the drive just dead? If the drive is dead can I replace it and maintain the same level of functionality?
I apologize for the length of this post but I want to make sure that all of the information represented a clearly as possible; I thank everyone in advance for any insight they might offer.
Duel 1.25 G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I had got a Pioneer DVR105 about 2 years ago and put it in the top Optical drive bay as I had read there were issues with Cooling and the drives not working mounted in the lower optical drive bay. It worked good.
then i had same issue with my Pioneer DVR105 about 14 months ago. I was desperate, I took the drive out of the Mac and actually took it apart and found a loose metal spring that had lodged itself (magnetized) to the reader arm which meant the drive would never mount any disc and would no longer read.
I got lucky, put the drive back to together and put the drive into an external FW case and POOF it worked.
I have kept the drive in that external FW case and it burns great ever since.
OWC sells the Pioneer DVR110D in a bundle for about $58 or drive only for about $53 and Newegg sells the drive OEM for about $40.
Newegg sells a ton of OEM products and can get products cheap as they get the stuff in bulk. I assume that OWC sells the bare drive for $13 more is you are buying it as Mac branded and you get OWC's top notch service. But for most people just buy the thing from Newegg. of course the Newegg Pioneer DVR110D drive is Just the drive...no software, no drivers, no cables, no screws...
only way I'd see it being $130 is if it was sold it setup in an external FW case with fan and power supply.

Hey Igor, Welcome to the Nokia Forums!
Sorry that you have been experiencing problems with the video playback, have you tried performing a soft reset yet? This will not remove any data, only reset the device settings back to how they where when new.
To perform a soft reset firstly create a backup using Nokia Suite, then type in *#7780# in your phone and the security code 12345 by default if prompted.
If it does not work, you could also try and download a video playing app from Nokia Store to see if video playback functions better on it.
    I hope this has helped!

  • E:\ Drive (CDROM) not shown in explorer - also won't see media in cd rom

I have a Satellite C655D-S5200.   I have had difficulty getting my cdrom drive to:
    1)  show up in explorer (it doesn't)
    2)  read media that is inserted into CD
    I know a few things:
I had this problem since one of the latest Updates from Microsoft (which one I don't know).   I have tried all the solutions thorugh Mr. FixIt on Microsoft.  I have tried dozens of possible solutions in the Toshiba Community Forums as well as other online tech support forums.
One forum posting I read I noticed the user booted into safe mode and was able to see his e:\ (cdrom drive) under computer in explorer.   He had determined that it had to be a recent update to one of the drivers on his system that was preventing the CDrom driver from working properly.
I tried the same.  Booted into Safe Mode and viola!  I saw my E:\ drive (CDROM).  It also was able read media in the CD.
This helped me rule out the issue was the physical hardware.   But I am still baffled as to what is interferring with the cdrom.sys driver for the TSSTcorp cd rom drive when I load windows 7 normally.
Has any of the tech experts at Toshiba had this problem?  If so, maybe its time to update the cdrom.sys driver after finding out what other driver is conflicting with cdrom.sys and preventing the cdrom drive from being seen or able to read or even write media.
Just as an fyi, I just recently purchased recovery cd for my particular serial numbered laptop.   I inserted the first recovery disk into the CDROM drive and followed the instructions.  the CDROM was able to see the CDrom drive, read from the CDrom drive and reinstall the factory image to my laptop.
once I completed the recovery, applied all the Microsoft updates, I rebooted and once again the cdrom drive (E:\) from my explorer disappeared and I can't even get Mr. FIxIT to see media in the drive.
Any ideas from either other users or the Toshiba Tech experts?   I am desperate.  I have to be able to access my CDrom drive and read and write to it.   but I can't go into safe mode everytime I want to do that (plus not all apps run in safe mode anyway).
PLEASE HELP.... THIS IS the 4th (fourth) week I've been messing around with this issue.  I need a solution!!!!!!

  • Pioneer DVR-105 Not Working In Quicksilver...Any Ideas?

i just bought a dvr-105 on ebay. i installed it, and it's recognized in the system profiler, and it ejects and i can put a disc in there...but then the disc is never recognized. i try different discs, and dvds and cds...but it never spins up and acknowledges the disc.
i have it set to "master" on the jumpers, and the firmware is version 1.33, which seems to be the newest one. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I checked out your link to Pioneer. I see that v 1.33 is listed as a Windows firmware version and v 1.30 is for Mac, so I would start there.
I believe some devices require that you boot into OS9 in order to install the Mac firmware, however, the firmware update itself is not OS dependent. You will need at least an OS 9.2.1 boot CD or drive partition, or it can boot to OS 9.2.0 if it is the original QS G4 disk.
I was using my QS G4 exclusively under OS 9.2.2 when I had first used the DVR-105 drive, but I had no problems when I later upgraded the OS to 10.3.5.
I have since moved the drive to my back-up B& W G3, but I have never experienced any problems.

  • PIONEER DVR-105 problem only with one set of CDs

My PIONEER DVR-105 works fine with most CDs, but when I bring NOVA Art Explosion CD set home from work, I can't get them to appear on my desktop. I've checked Pioneer website for firmwear upgrades & the last one is for Mac Classic.

This sometimes just happens - a drive won't like a certain set of media. Happens to me with client-provided CDs/DVDs.. There's not much you can do but upgrade the drive to a newer unit.

  • Cd-rw 8348A doesn't spin up to read any CDs!!

I purchased the 48x16x48 CD-RW, 8348A only three months ago... in the past month, I've had this problem:
Whether I'm in W2K or booted into DOS using W98 floppy, I stick ANY CD into the drive, and it doesn't spin up to read it... It only makes two humming noises spaced about 1 second apart, then the LED turns off, and the drive sits there, looking dead.
In W2K, when I click on the drive letter, it gives me the message to 'insert a CD into this drive'... like it doesn't know it's there.
My FIRMWARE is upgraded to 150D. It seems my drive is busted, but it shouldn't be...
Anyone else w/ this problem? Help!!!
     ?(

Well, I've got the same problem with the 8348a, no matter what firmaware (now on 150d).
Using a K7N2-L Mobo with Win98SE or Linux - the drive is seen and correctly identified by the BIOS and the systems, even the nero info tool gives the right specifications. But whenever I insert a CD (audio, data, whatever) which is read by my other drives, the LED simply does some blinks, and that's it. The media cannot be read / drive mounted (under linux) since the drive obviously claims that there's none inserted.
This persisted when trying all available IDE ports and when installing in my older PC with VIA Chipset. (So my setup is quite different from dandan's. But I don't even get the humming noises.)
So it seems the drive is the culprit. I'll try to have it replaced...

  • Need to replace dvr-105

hi I need to replace a pioneer dvr-105 dvd/cd rom in my mirror door g4. I've heard people mention the dvr-112 as a replacement, however I have a pioneer dvr-a12 available to me now. Anyone know if this can be used a a replacement?

    Hi-
Thats the labelflash version of the DVR-112. It should work fine. As long as it is a bulk unit, after removing the front bezel, it will mount where the 105 did.
You may want to update your OS, and you may need the help of Patchburn for full support of the drive.

  • IMac G4/800/17" doesn't see media - firmware update?

I have been trying to burn a DVD to transfer some audio tracks but my early iMac, G4/800/17", does not see the DVD-RW disk - it spins for awhile then spits it out. When I tried the same disk in my newer G4/1.25 it sees it fine. Could this be a firmware issue? Or perhaps because its a different optical drive its not going to work with a newer DVD-RW? (Maxell DVD-R works, Memorex DVD+RW does not - I tried 3 different disks).
The profiler on the older iMac ID's the optical drive as: Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-104, with Firmware Revision A227.
Newer iMac has a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D, Firmware Revision A612.
I checked the updates and couldn't find one that addresses this issue.

Cool! If nothing else, it was fun trying to read the translation. Didn't know you could do that with Sherlock, so thanks for that info, too. It appears that there are 2 unofficial firmware updates for my old Pioneer 104. A little scary to try them without knowing if they address my specific problem, but heck, what's the worst that could happen? I've got a fire extinguisher nearby......

  • Skype 7.1.0.105 - doesn't save passwords

    OMG, I can't believe this.
With the older versions of Skype it NEVER saved the passwords when you sign out & then want to sign back in. It's the ONLY software onthe planet that doesn't.
Then recently in the last year or so they FINALLY inserted that feature & NOW they removed it again.
    I'm downgrading.

Ok, I don't think I was clear enough, sorry.
I have multiple Skype accounts & one has to log out to log into the other.
Before I was able to do that & it remembered my p/w so I didn't have to do all this work to find p/w & manually type it in.
Skype is the ONLY IMing software that causes this problem. Every other one that I know of ICQ, YIM all save the p/w.
Why make the customer go thru all of this. Why not let them save their p/ws if they want to.

  • Hard drive remains spinning at 5,000 rpm, and doesn't spin down by itself!

OK, I thought this was a fan problem until I installed the iStat Pro widget, and discovered that my hard drive was spinning at 5,000 rpm even when no operations were being performed. It doesn't slow down on its own, and I have to put the drive to sleep to get the rpm to return to around 1200 rpm, which seems more normal to me. However, over time (perhaps 20-30 minutes) the rpm gets back up to 5K again. But the CPU fan stays constant at around 1200 rpm. This doesn't seem normal to me. Oh, and Apple just replaced the hard drive on this five-week old iMac. Before I got the new drive, it was not noisy, and did not rev as high, and stay high. Any feedback about this situation would be helpful. I think I'm probably going to end up taking it back to the Genius Bar (sigh)...

    Hello grejambri
That does sound like a problem with the Hard Drive or it's temperature sensor.
One thing you might want to do is run the Apple Hardware Test to see if it reports a problem with the HD's temp. sensor. > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Then be sure to record and report any test results to the folks that replaced your Hard Drive.

  • Device instance error, vista can't see media card

    hello,
I have a pearl 8110, with desktop 6 and vista.  After upgrading to version 6 I get this device instance error and specifically can't load any media onto the memory card via usb.
    USB\VID_0FCA&PID_8001\5&3100FCC1&0&5
been through the forums for months tracking this down on how to clear it.  Downloaded the calfix.exe program as that was the only clue that related to the 8001 error, ran it and nothing, did not work.  Fix was for versions 4.7 to ver 5.
I can sync, load and upgrade BB software without any problems, tried two different memory card manufacturers, formatted card, pulled battery so many time don't ask me to do it again.  mass storage mode is on, but software keeps telling me to turn it on even though its already on, been on since day one!  Everything works via bluetooth, pictures, video, mp3, but windows just can't see the memory card.
Also went through the computer management to loocate the drive, but no luck?
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix?

Greetings, and welcome to the BlackBerry.com Support Forums.
Are you attempting the format or looking at the Media Card from the BB WHILE you are plugged to the USB?
Unplug and try it all again.

  • Itunes cannot see media on external drive

    Hi
I ran out of space on my drive so moved my itunes folder onto an external drive. All the files and folders are there, so I know they went across OK. I then trashed and deleted my original itunes folder. When I load up itunes now it does not see all the music on the external drive . It just looks like a brand new fresh instal of itunes waiting for some music. After a quick search I though I may have moved across the libraries. Have tried holding the option key on loading and selecting the choose library option, but when I point to the folder created on the external drive, it just says "An itunes library file could not be found in the folder "itunes media" ( that was the name i gave it) I guess i need to get itunes to point to this folder but i have no idea how. Help please

No there isnt any files call library in the folder i created I am now in the process of copying them back but I guess I will loose all my playlists and playcounts. I do have a Copy of my drive that i made with carbon copy cloner. So maybe it will be best to boot from there, restore and start again.
Chris it was just the media folder. I was following the instructions on the apple support page. Got to point 14 didn't get the warning but did seen to have a brand new itunes, so emptied the trash as they said expecting everything to be fine but it wasnt.

  • DVR-110D wont recognize blank media

Hi all, I just bought a dual core 2.0 machine and when I try to burn a disc with it, it won't recognize any blank media, either cd-r or dvd-r.
I put the blank in the tray and close it, and the machine seems to be trying to read the disc to figure out what it is, but after approx 60 seconds, the tray opens and i get a message saying to "insert a recordable disc"
The drive WILL read cds and dvds.
Here is the system profile description of the drive and my Mac:

I had the same issues, although mine recognised blank cd-r but not blank dvd-r and previously burned dvds. Called up AppleCare and found out that it may be a faulty drive, however, I didn't want to waste my time bringing the machine to the AppleStore for a replacement, so I just bought another dvd drive and replaced the old one. Sorry if this isn't helpful, but you may want to try other different kind of media before jumping into any conclusion.

  • Console not seeing Media Centre when wired through...

I have an issue that is causing no end of problems. My current wired network and wifi SSIDs
BT Home Hub 2----- DHCP - Wifi 802.11g only {SSID}OLD
      |             |
      |           Sky HD Box (Wired)
      |           XBOX360_1 (Wired)
      |
    TP-Link WR1043N router --- Wifi 802.11n {SSID}N
      |            |
    WinXP1   WinXP2
    Connected to {SSID}OLD I have:
                                              2 PS3 consoles
                                              XBOX360_2
                                              WinXP3 (laptop)
                                              WinXP4 (desktop)
    Connected to {SSID}N I have:
                                              XBOX360_3
                                              3 tables
                                              4 android phones
                                              Win7_1
All hardware can connect to the internet without problems and anything connect to both {SSID}N and {SSID}OLD or wired running through the WR1043N router can communicate without issue.
WinXP1 hosts a a number of services (Web, POP, FPT) which communicate out to the internet as well as all internal devices and also hosts a Tversity Media Server. It also acts as a print server for the house with all devices taking advantage of the network printing, both Win and LRP, once again without issue.
Thanks to WMP11, WinXP1 also hosts a secondary media player and the WR1043N router also hosts a media player. All devices on both and either wireless network can see all 3 media players and play video and media flawlessly.
However I am having a problem with the 1 piece of hardware that is wired into the Home Hub itself. The device named XBOX360_1 can communicate fine on the internet (XboxLive, Lovefilm, IE) but it cannot reliably see any of the 3 media servers running on the network. Sometimes it sees nothing, then it sees them all but cannot connect, then it sees 1, lists the media available but will not play anything.
I have tried all 3 XBOX360 consoles in that port and non of them can see the media servers when wired into the Home Hub, yet all 3 can see it when wireless. I have not tried wiring the consoles into the WR1043N router but as the WinXP2 can see everything on WinXP1 fine, I am happy it is nothing to do with the TP-Link kit.
Also as anything connecting through {SSID}OLD has to pass through a wired network through WR1043N, I can say it is not a comms issue between WR1043N and HH2.
I am only left with the possiblity that something on the HH2 is blocking traffic between 2 wired ports or is introducing an increased amount of network lag, worse than over wifi. I have tried a combination of all 4 ports on the HH2 and tried 3 different network cables between HH2 and the console and nothing seems to work.
Is there any experience of there been communication issues between the ports on HH2 previously, or is there anyone out there with any more ideas because I am all out of them.
    Thanks
I am guided by a force much greater than luck.

ps3 Wired to HH - dlna protocol error 7531 - Appears to be a generic comms failure.
Win7 Wired to HH  - intermittant, slow, not Ideal
** Decided rather than moving my consoles about I would swap out the routers first **
Swap out the WR1043N entirely for a switch - same results as previous test when running through HH. No/intermittant connection to DLNA/Media servers slow/intermittant connection over HTTP, port 8080 etc
    Now the good news
Swap out the HH2 entirely for a switch -  flawless performance across all connections and protocols. HH2 spurred off the switch so still had internet enabled and HH still acted as DNS, the only difference is the XBOX is not passing through the HH to talk to media server.
It appears there is some interferance being introduced between the ethernet ports on the HH2 so time to replace it. The Win7 laptop is able to compensate for this to some expent but the consoles cannot.
I unplugged the Sky box which also plugs into the HH and it does seem to at least transmit the Media Server library, but as soon as streaming starts, it cuts off again.
    I only see 3 solutions
    1. Ask BT for a new HH, unlikely due to its age
    2. move to another provider and get a new modem/router free
    3. buy another modem and move the WR1043N, great more money and not what I bought the WR1043N
Personally I am thinking option 2 is the least hassle and most cost effective. Thanks for the bounce off anyway.
I am guided by a force much greater than luck.
