Pointing iTunes to a new feed?

Hi Folks,
How do I get iTunes to point to a new URL for my feed when the old URL is no longer valid?
It used to be hosted at Switchpod but I moved it. I placed the NewFeed tag in the xml file and assumed it had updated since it picked up a new episode. At that point I killed the account at switchpod. Now after pinging it with the iTunes ID I can see that it is still looking for it at switchpod.
In case it is helpfull here is the new feed url...
www.funinyourcity.com/feed.xml
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Hey Cat Lake,
First off thanks for the reply…To answer your question, no I don't have access to the old feed anymore as I killed that account. However that old feed was redirecting to the new location for a good week prior to me killing it. During that time the new feed had the NewFeed tag in it and did update the addition of an episode. I guess it just never updated the iTunes feed URL.
So, with that said... is there anyway to now update the feed url since the old url is dead? Or do I need to kill the podcast from iTunes and then resubmit?
Thanks,
Mike

• How do I point iTunes on a New Mac Mini to an External iTunes Library

I have a 90 Gb (7000 tracks) iTunes Library sitting on a network drive that I want to "relocate" from my Powerbook to my new Intel Mac Mini. Or rather I want to point iTunes on the new Mac Mini to the existing Library.
How can I achive this and still retain all my ratings and other track info (ie count)?

To move your songs from the network drive to the Mac Mini, add them to the iTunes on the Mac Mini, make sure that in Edit > Preferences > Advanced the default location is on the Mac Mini. Finally click Advanced > Consolidate Library. This will move the files to your Mac Mini.
On the other hand, if you want to point iTunes on the Mac Mini to the network drive, change the setting in the above preference location.

• Updating my podcast to new location, iTunes not recognizing new feed(48hrs)

Hi Podcasters,
I've been googling and reading about this the past few hours but I'm still at a loss. On Monday I moved my podcast - Pod Stories: Tales for everyone, which has been on iTunes since May 2007, to a new location. It's is the first time I've done this. The podcast and all the files therein is now located in my Sites folder on my iDisk.
Upon moving I changed my cover art and republished the audio files using the Podcast Maker software. It automatically 'pinged' to iTunes once completed.
It's been 48hrs and there is still no update on iTunes. I did the ping posted by Roger Wilmut1 using my iTunes i.d and it still came back stating the old url. I then did the second ping to the feed directly and it said podcast does not exist..?
I've read on Apple about a new feed URL command but to the life of me I really don't get it or understand how it's supposed to be done. Podcast Maker does everything for me and I can't read the raw .xml file.
It would be fab if someone in-the-know could help me out or explain things in a way I can grasp I am a techy but when it comes to coding/commands etc it's all a blur
My iTunes specific podcast number is: 253350746
My latest feed from Podcast Maker is: feed:file:///Volumes/io.creative/Sites/Pod-stories/podstories.xml
Cheers in advance. Hope this can be fixed up soon....
Marc

Hi Roger,
I made the change the day you posted the reply to this post. So it's been 5 days already...
The URLs I copied into the original post came from Podcast Maker, I just pasted directly from the software. The new URL/feed is the io.creative one - the address is on my iDisk which I got with my Mac Me.com account.
Podcast Maker allows to feed directly to the 'sites' folder in the iDisk, does it automatically. The old URL feed is on a friend's company server. But now that I have this iDisk I thought best to move over the podcast to there.
Thanks for the example. So i paste it into the top line of the channel section in the old .xml file? Do I leave the original feed address in the file or replace it with the new one? This area is not very clear in the Apple docs online.
I have both podcasts at the Lemonz website
New Feed:
http://www.lemonzdream.com/podcasts/?feed=http://homepage.mac.com/io.creative/Po d-stories/podstories.xml
Old Feed:
http://www.lemonzdream.com/podcasts/?feed=http://www.larasethno.com/podcast/pods tories.xml
Of course at present the new feed is not yet on the iTunes directory.
Cheers, Marc

• How to point Itunes to a new location where music is stored Cannot locate music now it is on an external drive PLEASE HELP!!!!

Background Info
i have recently got rid of my Windows machine an am now using my MacBook as my main machine
On the old windows Desktop i had my music set up as follows
Itunes libary information:
C:\Documents and settings\Lee Robinson\My Documents\My Music\
all of the Music files were stored on the PC as follows
G:\Music\My Music
Before i got rid of the machine i backed up all of my music and my iTunes libary files as follows to a External USB Harddrive that is now connected to my mac
Music Located @
/Volumes/AFRO-PORT/My Music
the iTunes Libary is located at the following
/Volumes/AFRO-PORT/My Music/iTunes
what i then did was to copy my itunes libary files at /Volumes/AFRO-PORT/My Music/iTunes to my local Mac machine .....
/Users/Afroboy/Music
Problem
Now when i fire up Itunes, i have all my playlists, ratings abum art etc...... but the problem i have is that itunes cannot locate any of the files. I guess that this is because my entire libary is still pointing to
G:\Music\My Music - as on my old windows PC
How do i tell itunes that this is no longer where i keep my music and for the actual MP3 files itself it needs to look at the following path
/Volumes/AFRO-PORT/My Music
... all file structures within these 2 file directories remain the same
I would really appreciate the heklp- my music collection is quite big and i dont want to loose any of the work i have done building it up over the past 5 years
Cheers
LR

Hi - thanks for the response
yes thats right, i have always kept my itunes folder and the directory containing all of my actual media seperate
all of the Music files were stored on the PC as follows:
G:\Music\My Music
Itunes libary information:
C:\Documents and settings\Lee Robinson\My Documents\My Music\
Your quite right, doing the above method that i have, turns it really messy when you when you try to move your entire collection. i saw this article earlier today
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
..........wish i followed it before hand
The only Semi work arond i have found is to go to File> Add libary.... and brows to what is now my new external drive with all my music on /Volumes/AFRO-PORT/My Music/ .
Once the import was complete it effectivly dupicated my entire libary - So i then went to
File > Display Duplicates to show duplicate items, sorted by date and removed all the duplicate items
.... So far seems to have worked ok however i have lost my play lists, their all on my iPod anyway so all seems fine now
As you said iTunes wants you to do thinngs in a certian way and it certianly makes you pay if you dont. So now my question is, so i dont have this problem in the future..... do i
A) Manually move all of my Music files to my iTunes Liabry and have everything in one folder (If i move manually where do i need to copy all my files to?)
B) Start from Scratch and let iTunes do it, so i have everything on the external disk

• How do I point ITunes to the new firmware 3.1 update

Here is my issue, due to connectivity I am downloading th lastest 3.1 update at my office and will bring that update to my home PC, (My service provider will never be able have me online for a 300 meg file)
Here is the question how do I get itunes to see that new file, that I will bring home on a flash drive??
Thank you
Mike

You can connect your iPhone to your work computer and prevent automatic syncing one time, without changing settings: Open iTunes. Then, as you connect iPhone to your computer, press and hold Command-Option (on a Mac) or Shift-Control (on a PC) until you see iPhone appear in the sidebar.
Then you can use iTunes summary pane to check for update. One of the choices is to download but not install. Then, disconnect your iPhone.
The iPhone2,13.1_7C144Restore.ipsw file will be found in the user account/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates on a Mac
Windows XP: "\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates"
Windows Vista: "\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates"

• I'm moving my podcast and I don't know where to put the itunes:new-feed-url into the code. I'd love to just have somebody point to the right spot. Please advise.

It doesn't go anywhere in that: that isn't a feed, it's a web page. A feed is a text file in XML format.
Would you like to post the URL of your iTunes Store page?
This page about podcasting includes a basic sample feed so you can see what one should look like, and at the bottom of the page is the method for redirecting iTunes to a new feed.

I recently moved my clients podcast feed and set it up (with WP Podpress plugin) with the new feed URL. I submitted it to iTunes but it has yet to show an update:

The feed validates, the source code shows all of the necessary header info for itunes - what am I missing... why isn't it updating?
Thanks for your help!

iTunes is looking for a feed at
https://www.calvaryqc.org/xml/podcasts/02080425.xml
and not finding it. The connection is a secure one - https - and when tested in FireFox reports that it uses an untrusted certificate: but even over-riding that shows that there is no file at that address. It is to that feed that you have to add the 'itunes:new-feed-url' tag (it's present on the feed you link to but simply links to the same feed so it's redundant).
Unless you can place a feed at the URL I quote above which iTunes can read (as it must have done once as there are episode showing in the Store, albeit rather out-of-date) you will not be able to redirect iTunes to your new feed.

• HELP - I want a new feed that will pick up all my previous podcasts.. how??

Itunes has happily picked up all my Tory RAdio podcasts in the past. A couple of weeks ago it stopped - which is worrying.
Given that has happened I thought I could use the opportunity to create a new feed that will pick up all my previous podcasts (and obviously new ones as and when I do them) but also I can finally put some artwork so that Tory Radio on itunes actually has the nice logo I would like.
I previously just submitted www.toryradio.podbus.com into itunes which is where I host and it has picked them all up.
How for a complete technophobe - can I get something that I can submit to Itunes as a new feed that will pick up all the old podcasts, new ones and include a logo?
Is it easy? How can I do it?

I can't check on iTunes until tomorrow morning, but in the meantime I can tell you what's wrong with your original feed. The top two lines read

They should read

Without the itunes URL in the second line iTunes cannot parse the required tags to show your episodes. I would guess that the line was there originally but got removed, after which iTunes would not recognize new episodes. Put it back and reload the feed, and it should work if iTunes hasn't terminated your podcast in the meantime.
But to answer your original question: assuming you have access to both feeds; copy everything in the original feed from the first
to the last
near the bottom.
In the new feed, find the last
tag at the bottom (just above the
and
tags), start a new line just after it and insert the material you posted from the original feed (though there are an awful lot of episodes there, and though it's technically not a problem you might want to consider whether you really need all of them in the feed).
If you don't have direct access to the feeds but are using one of the podcast creation services which don't allow this, you will have to follow whatever method they provide for adding the episodes, possibly one at a time.

• New URL, how do I get iTunes to point to my new feed

We are in the process of redesigning our webpage. We purchased a new domain name and changed our webhost. Our new website is www.calvarybible.com. I am wondering how to get iTunes to point to my new feed. It is all the same content just at a new URL. I have sent a few messages via "report a concern", but have not seen any response.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Geek,
Thanks, I set up the <itunes:new-feed-url> tag. When I updated my podcast in iTunes it found the new feed. I should have read the specifications better.
We will be sending the old domain name to the new URL soon, so I am glad I got this done as it says to keep the old feed for at least 48 hours. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Mike

• Looking to point iTunes (playlists and all) to a new location

Hello all,
I'm in a bit of a pickle of my own making, and I greatly appreciate any help anyone is able to offer on this one.
I've been using iTunes as a playlist jukebox much more than as a file organizer. Here is my normal mode and sequence of operation, largely because I came into using iTunes later than some other programs out there (like MusicMatch Jukebox or WMP).
1. Rip tracks to my hard drive using another program.
2. Add folders/files to iTunes, then create playlists, usually one CD=one playlist. If I have a multi-CD set, I will create a playlist of all the CDs together, instead of individual playlists for each CD.
3. I do not have iTunes organizing files for me, and I do not create files when adding to the library, because they are already created on my hard drive.
Several months ago, my 80GB internal drive was running out of room, so I copied everything to a 100GB external drive and started ripping newer tracks out there as I acquired them, and creating new playlists for those newer tracks. I did not re-organize my iTunes library at that time, because I didn't know what to do to accomplish that. So, my current iTunes library has older playlists pointing to files still on my C: drive and newer ones (after the copy to the external drive) to my external drive.
I also have some music that was imported directly into iTunes, mostly acquisitions from the Music Store. Those files reside exclusively on my C: drive, no copies out on the external drive at this time, and if need be, they could stay on C:, but if I can also move them to the external drive and iTunes can still find them, that would be great.
I would like to retain all my playlists that are currently referencing files on C:, but still point iTunes to the external drive for every file and playlist reference, since copies of the files on older C: drive playlists are now on the external drive, except for the directly imported files already mentioned. And, if you didn't see this one coming, I'd really like to reclaim the music file space on my C: drive, only after iTunes doesn't look there anymore for files to satisfy the playlists. Well over 50GB stands to be gained here, once reclaimed.
Now the kicker - I have over 20,400 tracks and well into the hundreds of playlists.
So there you have it - I have dual copies of most of my music files until I can get iTunes to forget about the old copies entirely, and to not have to re-create those hundreds of playlists to reference files on the external drive.
I have thought about using an editor on my iTunes library XML file to change all references to C: to my external drive name (and top-level folder references to change as well), but no editor (XML or otherwise) I have in my arsenal will hold a file this big.
Again, many thanks in advance to anyone(s) of you kind readers who might be able to throw this old (53 YO) dog a bone of useful information.
With a little bit of hope and a whole lot of thanks,
Gorgo

Dell Dimension 2400 Windows XP External hard drives

Once more, thanks for responding, Mimico!
Bad news here, I'm afraid.
The consolidation aborted because apparently a file name was too long for the copy, and there was only a puny generic message box notifying me of samesaid abort. No reference to what track(s) caused the problem. I could be all day chasing that one down. No can do.
Needless to say, I went back to the original library file on my C: drive. Then desperation set in. I felt I had no alternative but to delete 99 3/4% of my library entries manually, leaving only those tracks that I purchased through the iTunes Store. The plan being, to also kill all existing playlists and rely on the Browser instead, once I got my track references lined up, supposedly by the following step.
Then I did an import, pointing to the master folder on my external drive, thinking it would pick up everything underneath, per the directions in the Help file for mass imports of music.
The import managed to pick up only about 1/7 of my collection on the external drive, even though it is all there on that drive under that folder. There may be different layers of subfolders and files under the main folder, but the predominating structure is an artist subfolder, than a CD subfolder, then the associated MP3 track files at the lowest level. Some of those CDs with that structure got picked up, many others did not. Bad result.
Is there any alternative to manually searching for missed folders and importing them one folder at a time? That would be the biggest help to me at this stage, I'm afraid. Otherwise, I guess I have to do what needs to be done.
Sitting in my doghouse,
Gorgo

• How long does itunes:new-feed-url take to completely change my podcast page?

I've used the itunes:new-feed-url to change my podcast page, but I'm curious how long it takes. I have a new episode up, but the podcast page located here doesn't show that third episode, even though the new feed as well as 301 redirect is in place.

The Store won't redirect to the new feed at http://www.tripodbroadcasting.com/givethatsomethought/feed/ until the next time it checks the old feed. You posted the latest episode only today: it usually takes 1-2 days for new episode to appear in the Store as it caches feeds and visits them in rotation to check for changes. When this happens it will transfer to the new feed. Subscribers are already redirected to the new feed and see the third episode.

• News feeds stop at a certain point in fb after upgrading to ios7!

News feeds stop after an hour or two of news in fb after upgrading to ios7 on an iPad 2! Just get a little gray dot at the bottom of the feed shows up and nothing loads after that point.

I've honestly found the best way to access facebook on the iPad is through safari. The app is buggy at best.

• Where to mention a new feed address to iTunes

Hi all,
I did submit an RSS feed address to iTunes when I created it in October 2011, at this time the adress was :
http://feeds.feedburner.com/JeCommenceABloguer
When I published my first podcasts it worked very well but once I published some other posts in my blog WordPress (without media enclosed) my podcasts disappeared from iTunes.
So I created a new feed only for podcasts: http://feeds.feedburner.com/jcab-podcasts.
I want now to tell iTunes to read this new address BUT the original one must keep active for other stuff.
Is anyone could provide some help with me that would be great :-)
Jerome

You need to add a special tag to the original feed: the process is described here -
