Pointing iweb site to a new domain

Can anyone give me the answer.
I have published my site on my .mac account.
I then brought a domain from web-mania.com
I now want to point my new domain name to the website on my .mac account.
I have emailed web-mania with no joy as they keep coming back saying that they don't host sites and i can't make them understand that my site is hosted on dotmac and all i want to do is just point my new website to that domain.
Help Help this site was meant to be up and running a week ago.

I'm having the same sort of issue, but I think I figured it out. The only thing is . . .they say it could be 48 hours before it works. Anway, I purchased mine from "godaddy.com" and the instructions I followed were to add the "CNAME" also referred to as a DNS control panel, MX record or Alias (you'll find this option under your account manager probably). The CNAME for iWeb galleries is "web.mac.com" . I'm hoping this works for me, and I hope it helps you too! I have plans with a friend that is an expert tonight, so I'm going to pick his brain and figure it out, I'll report back if what I've told you is wrong!

  • How to redirect viewers to my iWeb site on a new domain?

I've moved my website to a new domain with a new Web host (which was much easier than I expected). Now, I'd like to redirect anyone who clicks on my old site to my new one, but I haven't found a way to do that. Any suggestions?

If you use personal domain at MobileMe then nothing will change.
Delete the CNAME record where you manage your domainname and point to your new host.
It takes a few hours for the change to propagate thru the network, so do not delete your MMe site yet.
    Your visitor won't notice.
If you use the web.me.com address then it is more complicated.
Duplicate the index.html file in your site folder as many times as there are webpages and rename each duplicate to the name of each webpage. You have to delete the original webpage.
Then open each renamed file in a plaintext/HTML editor of your choice and change the redirect URL to the same page on your new host.
    It looks like this :
    <html><head><title></title><meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="0; URL=http://url.to.new.page.html"></head><body></body></html>
Do so AFTER you publish to your new host.
    Practice.

  • How do I get my old iweb sites into the new iweb 08 after upgrading?

I upgraded and now the new iweb 08 does not see all my old web site pages. How do Igetnthem into the new application?

I had a similar issure after buying a new iMac and trying to get my iweb sites onto the new computer. I called Apple tech support and they told me to copy the file "domain.site" form the user/library/application support/iweb folder from my old imac into the iweb folder located in the same directory on my new computer. Once it is copied to the new location, double click on the "domain.site" file and it should open in the new iweb program. They told me to check all the pages to make sure it works OK in the program. My problem is that the new iweb program crashed everytime I double click on the "domain" file. Hope this helps.

  • Publishing iWeb site to .Mac personal domain

I set up Personal Domain on .Mac & added the cname on my account with Network Solutions & are waiting for the changes to take effect now. But I have 2 sites in iWeb. How do I get the right site on the personal domain.

    Hi again,
My Problem is that it is not clear how to redirect mlwhall.com --> www.mlwhall.com
Since CNAME is for aliases, I am not sure how to point mlwhall.com since that is the root name. The A (host) will only take an IP address, so I assume that if I am going to do this I need to do it in the CNAME section (pinging did not get me a useable IP address). I cannot believe I am the only person that wants to do this -- setting up domain forwarding does not seem to work either
Is it not common for people to want to have www.blah.com and blah.com to resolve to the same place?
    ----Martin----
And yes -- I meant to say that I made a CNAME alias for www that points to web.mac.com as pointed out in the personal domain instructions.

  • Publish iweb site with out changing domain name?

When you go to my website (hmstechnology.com) it changes it to this:
    http://hmstechnology.com/hmstechnology/HOME.html
I was uploading via iWeb. Now I am ready to go back to filezilla so that I can just have my domain name remain hmstechnology.com when people visit.
Any suggestions on why Filezilla is changing my domain name, or iWeb for that matter? How can I fix this?
    Greatly appreciated,
    Phil

This is not so much an iWeb problem as a limitation of your server. If you switch to a hosting company that allows you to name your root folder the same as your domain name and you upload the files only, you will get the URL without the extra folder name.
Having the page name in the URL box is not really a big deal as nobody has to enter it into the browser. If your site is uploaded to a folder named - iberianpigati - and the domain name is pointed at the index.html file inside this folder, all that has to be entered into the browser is...
    iberianpigati.com
.... for anybody to get to your landing page.
As has been pointed out, you could forward your domain name using masking/cloaking but this is a very poor choice from the point of view of SEO and bookmarking. If you are more concerned with the look of your individual page URLs than people actually finding your site then masking would be the way to go.

  • Import iweb site in a new macbook

hi, i'm french sorry for my english
so my macbook hard disk broked last week, i buy a new macbook pro
but how can i do to continue my web site with iweb09 ?
i have no data just on my idisk and iweb says "open problem with the file ....iweb/Domains.sites2.
    how can i do ?
    thanks

Welcome to the discussions. Only iWeb's Domain file can be opened in iWeb. See this Apple doc on How to back up MobileMe data. It says:
Any websites you have published with iWeb should still be available within iWeb. iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). If you no longer have this file, you can view your currently published pages and manually recreate them within iWeb, but there is no way to import published pages back into iWeb. You can manually back up the Domain file, or use Backup to back it up.
Paragraph 2.3 of this FAQ page gives some tips on how to use published files, graphics, photos, etc., to help rebuild the site from scratch:

  • Publishing iWeb Site on a Personal Domain

    Hi,
I'm having a lot of trouble publishing my site to a personal domain. I am using iWeb 08 and am publishing via MobileMe and domains.com is my host. For some reason, I just can't get the site to publish on my personal domain. My personal domain is registered on MobileMe and the CNAME is programmed into the domains.com DNS management area. What's going on that's not allowing it to appear?? The site is just blank...please help!

Works fine for me too, but not if you place the www before your domain name. If you want this too, you may need to go back to your DNS settings and set up a new CNAME for your domain name that includes the www part too, but only if you want to.

  • Hard drive dead with iweb site inside.  new iweb site replaced my old site!

Is the old site a gonner? I had published the site with a personal domain, hosted with mobile me. When adding a new site, iweb replaced my old one. the old one was my business portfolio. the new one is just a single property advertisement.
why dont I see my old site on mobile me? (even before I published this new one)

I don't believe so. Not unless the new site had the same name as the old/business site. Mount your iDisk and check inside the Web/Sites folder for your personal and business site folders.
What type of domain name forwarding are you using? If your business site is in a different domain file than the personal site the last published site will have the minimal URL for your MMe account: http://web.me.com/yourMMe_AccountName/.
You may have to change your domain name forwarding to include the business site name in the URL: http://web.me.com/yourMMe_Account_Name/Business_SiteName/.

  • Moving iweb site to my new computer?

I just bought a new macbook pro. I am attempting to move my iweb domain to the macbook. I backed up the domain on my old computer (imacG5) to my idisk. I burned all the files onto a dvd. I want to move these files (five sites) into the domain file on my macbook pro. I am sitting here like a moron looking at the files; I've read th e posts that say to copy my domain to the new computer, but my domain is a big package of files and I am not sure how to "copy" them so they will open on my new computer.
    Thanks for any help!
    John Fitz

The Domain file should appear as a single file (though it is a "package" of files like you mention). Copying it to your new MacBookPro should be as easy as drag and drop. I would put it into the same default location as you found it...on your hard drive..../Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/iWeb/... Drop it in this folder and if you are asked to overwrite and existing Domain file, this should be okay as long as you have not already started a new site on your new MacBook Pro.
Once you have this file copied over, you should be able to open iWeb on the new computer and see all your sites in the Site Organizer. Again, so that there is no confusion, the file that you need is called "Domain". Let me know if you have any trouble.
If you have found any of this information to be useful to you, please take the time to provide me with feedback by marking my reply as "solved" or "helpful" using those little buttons that you see in the title bar of this reply. I'd really appreciate it!

  • Restoring/Loading iWeb sites to a new MacBook

My iMac G5 died and I've replaced it with a MacBook Pro.
I had saved my iWeb 08 sites to an external hard drive.
Is there any way to "reload"or "restore" those sites to the iWeb 08 application inside my new Macbook Pro?

iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder — that's the file you should have saved:
_iWeb ’08: Backing up your Domain file_
Since you have an external hard drive, hopefully you're using it within a wider backup strategy — Time Machine perhaps or a bootable clone via one of these apps...
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
    If so, search for:
    .sites2
...which is the iWeb Domain file's hidden extension. If you can find it, double-clicking it should open it in iWeb. Although you still may have problems as NOTE 1 here suggests:

  • Multipul iweb sites   problem with own domain name

    hello all
i have currently 2 iweb sites (my own personal one with my own personal domain) and another site which has a podcast for my self and flat mates
    the problem comes in this.
if i want to subscribe the podcast to itunes it trys to send it as www.garethmob.co.uk/flat6_band ect where the actuall band website does not sit on my own personal website
is there any way i can fix this by having the origional web.me.com/garethmob ect for one of the websites and the garethmob.co.uk for the other?
both are on my mobile me account
thanks for any help in advance
    Gareth

If you have more than on site on your iDisk and go to Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites, you will see that you have two website folders but only one index.html file.
If the domain name www.garethmob.co.uk (Site 1) is directed at that index.html file then that's the one that must exist in the Web/Sites folder.
When you upload another site (Site 2), its index.html file overwrites the existing one and the URL is then directed to the wrong site.
When you upload changes to the site with the MobileMe URL (Site 2), you must then upload a copy of the index.html file for the other site (Site 1) after doing this.
You can do this by publishing your Site 1 to a local folder and then put the index.html file inside a folder and trash the rest.
After you have uploaded changes to Site 2, go to Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites and upload a copy of the index.html file for Site 1 by drag and drop.

  • How can I upload my iWeb site to 2 different domain addresses?

I have two different domain names, but I want to publish one iWeb site to both addresses.
I can't work out how to do it, I was thinking to duplicate the whole site but using the other address. Then I would have to make indiviual changes to both sites when updating content etc.
There must be an easier way to do this, I am missing something?

Your info says you use iWeb 08.
That means you publish to a folder.
If so, iWeb is not involved. You decide what to do with the published files on the desktop.
With iWeb 09 you only have one FTP address. To publish to another server you have to change the publish info.
But everytime you do that, iWeb will publish the entire site.
You can't have both. iWeb was not meant for that.
Anyway, you provided the solution yourself : duplicate websites for each server.
There's actually no need to make the changes in each site.
Make changes in one site, and duplicate the page to the other site.
    Then publish.

  • How do I go about hosting an iWeb site on my own domain?

I have never "posted" or tried to post anywhere on Web before. Forgive me if I don't follow a protocol that I should.
I just published an update of a site. The original site I can't change by myself. I made the new one on iweb thinking it would go to www.capellidanglifoundation.org - instead it is found at this unwieldy place: http://web.mac.com/marciareidmarsted/CapellidAngeli_FoundationSite/Welcome.html -
I did make a Netscape site in 2001 which is now at http://www.aboutmyhair.net, but someone else did the uploading for me.
how do I post to my own domain?
I have made another updated site. It is ready to upload to www.marciareidmarsted.com - and I don't want it to go to another long address.
I thought they had fixed it at the apple store at West Farms Mall, but I guess not.
Thanks for any help you can give - I did see someone with the same problem, so it is probably not that unusual.

  • IWeb won't Publish new domain on New mac...?

I copied all my domains and switched them from another computer. I re- logged in under my account on the new mac. Trashed the domain file and replaced with my older domain file. And made a revison. It allows me to Publish, but no changes get made when I check online. I have refreshed cache and quit browsers but my iweb domain files does not link up to the online version. They do exist in my Stie folder in my iDsik though. Any help?

Publish the site to a folder on the desktop and check it locally to make sure the changes are being included in the newly published site. When you confirm that then try doing a Publish Entire Site to replace the site folder on the iDisk in it's entirety.
If you still can't get the site to replace the existing files on the iDisk, mount the iDisk, go to the Web/Sites folder and delete the site folder. Then do another Publish Entire Site.
