Pointless to use iCloud on my iOS5 devices if don't have Lion on my MacBook?

I don't have the iCloud option for my MacBook becuase I have not upgraded to the new Lion OS (I'm on OS X 10.6.8). As tempted as I am to upgrade, I am going to pass for now becuase I have read far too many bad reviews from people. Specifically that it creates serious problems for people that use the MS Office suite to remain compatable with PC co-workers, which I do.
Of course I do have iCloud on my iOS5 devices (my iPhone and iPad) and I want to use it. However, when I turn on iCloud for my iOS5 devices, the result is duplicate calendar entries on both devices, and I still have to synch them with the MacBook to keep it updated. I don't get the duplicates if I uncheck iCal in my synch options in iTunes on the MacBook, but then anything I create on the MacBook won't be on the devices, and vice versa.
So is it pointless to try to use iCloud for my devices, or is there some magical way to make this work?

Just as Apple states in the iCloud system requirements, you really do need Lion to sync iCloud fully with a Mac.
There are some unofficial, unsupported workarounds for syncing calendars and setting up email, but everything else won't work.

What do you mean by "apple ID"? There's an ID you can use at the iTunes store to buy songs, apps, etc. there's an ID you can use for your iCloud account - the two can be different or the same. So which service are you referring to when you talk about an apple ID?

If your device is signed into an old iCloud ID that is an earlier version of the ID you want to sign in with, do the following:
If you are using iMessage and FaceTime, make sure you are signed into these services with your current ID. If they are signed into the old ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your current ID.
Then temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. (You should not have to verify the old email account so it doesn’t matter if you no longer have access to it.) Now go to Settings>iCloud, turn off Find My iDevice and enter your current password when prompted (even though it prompts you for the password for your old ID). Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll (unless you are using iCloud Photo Library). When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out (or Delete Account if you are not running iOS 8) and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address back to the way it was. A bit later I discovered that Photo Stream was not working on my Windows 7 PC either. If I opened the iCloud control panel and put a check in the box to turn on Photo Stream, and then closed and reopened the control panel, the check mark was gone again. Also, nothing happened when I clicked on the options button beside the Photo Stream check box. I already had version 2 of the iCloud control panel so I could not upgrade further.
I ended up uninstalling the iCloud control panel, rebooting, downloading a fresh copy from Apple, and reinstalling it. This worked and I now have photo stream working on my Windows 7 system as well.

verizon is cdma rather then gsm which is the mostly used phone network outside usa
so depending on where out of he country mean you may not be able to recieve service at all
I would check up on the country you're going to's phone companys they would have a guide
if they support cdma and ipads

Backing up doesn't change or delete anything on the phone. I am guessing you restored your phone using iCloud.
If you did not have a backup of it made before you did 'whatever it was you did', then the information is gone.

You need Lion and iCloud unfortunately; iCloud is not supported by Snow leopard.
