Policy on bumping topics? [SOLVED]

Hello,
Every forum seems to have a different way of approaching bumping. Right now I'm really just not getting the answer I need (nor any answers at all), so I've bumped the topic very sparingly (like every 3 days or so). I've already bumped it 2 times. I can't find the Rules or FAQ so I wanted to ask what the rules on bumping are. I would really like my problem to at least be addressed, but it just keeps getting ignored. I won't go into my problem here as this is not the correct forum and there's already a topic.
The topic in question is this:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=155864
Thanks in advance,
Dragos240

The Forum Etiquette has a rule on bumping:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … te#Bumping
Your post could do with some more information (that you would have ideally included in one of the bumps); namely, what have you tried (custom asound.conf) and where else have you looked/asked (irc). If the card is particualrly new, then talking to the alsa people would make sense.

  • Yet another "Virtualbox USB doesn't work" topic [SOLVED]

So, I set up virtualbox today with the intention of reverse-engineering some devices I have that operate over serial, but the program runs only on windows. I got through the install process until I tried to view the settings for the windows xp image I installed and it said "Failed to access the USB subsystem" with the following details:
    Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x00004005)
    Component: Host
    Interface: IHost {30678943-32df-4830-b413-931b25ac86a0}
    Callee: IMachine {22781af3-1c96-4126-9edf-67a020e0e858}
I followed the instructions here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vi … t_or_guest and added "export VBOX_USB=usbfs"  to my .bashrc file. My user is part of the vboxusers group and I have installed virtualbox-host-modules, virtualbox-guest-modules, and virtualbox-guest-utils. I added a file to /etc/modules-load.d called virtualbox.conf with "vboxdrv" in it. I've also rebooted my computer several times during the process. I've also installed the extras package thing inside VirtualBox that enables USB 2.0 and such. The windows image has the guest utilities thing installed as well.
Perhaps I am just missing something, but I have no clue where to turn to next. Everything I have found just says the same things that I have done or seem to be out of date. I could really use some help here...what should I do to get this working?
    Thanks in advance.

Installing the "extra" package from the AUR that enables USB support is not enough. You need to right click the VM, choose "Settings", "USB" and enable if from there. Then you need to "plug in" the device, not just physically, but from the VM. While the VM is running go to "Devices", "USB Devices" and plug it in from there. You can also create filters so that the devices will "plug in" automatically, if you want.
Reboot the guest OS after installing the Guest Additions; don't just suspend it.
Is your user in the 'storage' group?
What "devices" are we talking about? Because I have a scanner and it didn't work in a Windows VM until I added the user on the host OS (Arch Linux) to the 'scanner' group.

  • Button to flag a topic as 'solved'

Is it an idea to provide every topic with a button to flag it [SOLVED]?
I know you could edit the original post title if you are the original author, but many people still seem to forget/not know about this option.
If this is done in future there can be a possibility to search (more accurate) for solved/unsolved topics.
    Opinions?

Allan wrote:I like this idea as it would save me some time.  However, allowing anybody to flag something as solved would be open to abuse.  An innocent example, one person could think it solved while the original submitter does not.  I could see more malicious occurrences too, even though this forum is quite good as far as thing like that go.
You could hang a name on the tagger so that everybody would know who flagged it to be solved/(unsolved again) and malicious users can be banned.
But let's stick with the original user first.
Isn't the idea of a button instead of having to edit your orinial post-title simpler and better (in the end)?
I think more people would actually make use of it.
For beginners it becomes more obvious that/how one should flag a topic solved plus it's easier to have a search for (earlier solutions to) your question before you post it (again and again)...
For more expirienced users it is allways nice to know an anwer solved a problem or topics still need (your) help.

I'm marking this topic SOLVED, though more accurately, I should say that I've worked around the problem.
I achieved a stable wireless connection by changing APs, which leads me to believe that the underlying problem is upstream. Specifically, the problem is most likely that NetworkManager is not compatible with all APs. In my case, when I connect to a Netgear NDR3700v1 running dd-wrt, NetworkManager and nn-applet crashed randomly and frequently. However, after changing to an Apple Airport AP, I achieved a stable connection without crashes.
Bottomline: if you experience wireless connection troubles with NetworkManager and nm-applet, the problem may be that NetworkManager is not "compatible" with your AP hardware.

Completely normal. I'd be asking the question "was I hacked" if I found cron NOT running as root.
I'd say your computer just crashed.

  • Drive restriction group policy causes error message when accessing Open and Save As Dialog Boxes on Windows 8.1

We are running Windows 8.1 Pro x86
I am really curious as to why the drive restriction group policy causes the error message to pop up:
"This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."
It does not prevent from actual saving so functionality is not lost but it really annoys our end users and we're getting a lot of complaints. We cannot use the workaround of hiding drives instead of restricting as this still presents security issues. This
is happens when saving (or clicking on a button like "Browse" that opens the 'Open' dialogue box) in all Office 2013 applications, Internet Explorer, Paint, Notepad, and probably most others. I've looked at many forums and no suggestions for workarounds
have succeeded for us to get rid of this error message and in fact, I read a post that stated that someone contacted Microsoft and they said this was by design and there is no workaround. I find this very unfortunate that we either have the choice of compromising
security or annoying our end users. It seems to me like the new dialogue box in Windows 8.1 (and maybe 8?) attempts to access the local drive under the logged in user's account before it actually opens up the dialogue box which conflicts with the group policy
that restricts access to the drive.
Has anyone at all had any luck getting this to go away without removing the restrictions? It seems like the answer is either buried in the Windows code or somewhere in the registry.
Thank you in advance for your time!

Thank you for your time and response! Unfortunately, we have the machine locked down pretty tight (they are public use computers that require heavy restriction) and it is set to restrict all drives so access is limited to the local profile. We did try
testing your method, however, by adding the Desktop as an allowed location in the Office policy (which would not solve the issue for the other applications but was good for a test) using the path %userprofile%\desktop. When choosing that location, it does
not throw the error but unfortunately, it does not remember like it did for your with the E: drive so it still always throws the error when first loading the dialogue box no matter what I do. If you're able to confirm that this is simply by design and we're
just expected to inform our users to click through the errors, then I guess that's the accepted answer. Although, do you think that there might be a registry key value that is set after you save to the E: drive for the first time? Maybe we could set that value
to %userprofile%\desktop if it's doing the redirection after the first save through registry. Thanks again!

  • [SOLVED] X11: Fonts issue with HDL Designer

    Hi,
Yesterday I installed HDL Designer for my job. But I couldn't launch it successfully.
After some environment variable checks, it give me this error message:
Error: Could not create FontSet for font '-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*'.
The following character sets cannot be drawn with this font:
    ISO8859-1
My locale is set on fr_CH-UTF-8 and the application set LC_ALL to C.
And after some searchs, I found two non-working solutions:
    A pretty old:
    http://www.edaboard.com/thread1456.html
I tried to create the old X11R6 directory and then do some symbolic links with no success.
A recent one with the right applications version:

I haven't found any equivalent package for "xfonts-75" in the official repositories nor in aur.
So maybe I missed something like symbolics link 'cause I don't have the sames directories.
    Any idea?
    Thank you.
[EDIT] Problem solved. I found the missing fonts package (xorg-fonts-75dpi).

  • [SOLVED] home folder issue.

Im having some strange issues with my home folder.
I followed the "beginners guide" by adding a user with this command: "useradd -m -g users -G audio,lp,optical, storage, video, wheel, games, power -s /bin/bash archie", but with my username.
But when i try to start transmission i get this error:Couldn't open "/home/steffa/.config/transmission/lock": No such file or directory. But im able to open transmission if i use the sudo command.
The same problem occurs when i try to use menumaker. i get this output:
    [steffa@myhost ~]$ sudo mmaker -vf OpenBox3
    Password:

      using Xterm as terminal emulator
    * writing to ~/.config/openbox/menu.xml
    * done
But reconfigure openbox doesnt change the menu at all. it is still the default menu.xml
I also get this error when trying to launch chromium:

I'm not sure, it happened to people before so maybe someone else can shed some light on this.
i did "sudo chown -R steffa:users /home/steffa" i read somewhere that that is the correct way. am i wrong?
Yes that's fine, the extra :users part also assigns it to the users group.

  • [Solved] Mythtv audio capture woes

OK I admit it, after a week or so fighting with this, I'm stuck.
This is the last showstopper before using my mythbox as the primary entertainment source to my TV and would very much appreciate any help.
I'm running mythtv 0.20.2.20070828-2 built from ABS on Arch64 using the stock 2.6.23 kernel.  I have a Sound Blaster Live 5.1 (using coax digital out, just to complicate things a bit)  and a K-world v-stream xpert DVB-T card with composite/s-video input.  My cable box is plugged into the video input and the soundcard line-in.  The picture is fine, but the problem is that I cannot get Mythtv to capture the audio from the soundcard at all.
I have set /dev/dsp to be the audio device in mythtv-setup and `cat /dev/dsp > /dev/dsp` does output the audio from the cable box.
Doing an lsof when trying to watch tv:
    # lsof /dev/dsp
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
    mythbacke 22451 root 24r CHR 14,3 10225 /dev/sound/dsp
Doesn't seem to be a permissions issue either as its the same problem running the frontend as root.  Searching through forums seems to point the blame at my mixer levels, though I think I've tried every combination!
In alsamixer, under playback, everything muted, under capture Line and Capture are set to capture, Capture and AC97 are set to 100 = No Sound
If I then increase the AC97 playback volume I get the Live TV audio direct from the cable box which is out of sync and not recorded.
No doubt I've missed something really obvious, so please give me a kick in the right direction.
    Thanks

I knew this would be something simple!  When running the frontend from a terminal, these errors pointed me in the right direction:
    2007-12-06 13:45:17.078 AudioOutput Error: Rate doesn't match (requested 44100Hz
    , got 48000Hz)
2007-12-06 13:45:17.078 AudioOutput Error: Unable to set ALSA parameters
2007-12-06 13:45:17.078 NVP: Disabling Audio, reason is: Unable to set ALSA para
    meters
In Utilities/Setup->Setup->General my audio output device was set to ALSA:spdif but I have an /etc/asound.conf file that makes the spdif output the default, so changing the device to ALSA:default solved the problem.  I am a happy bunny
Now how do I mark this topic solved?

    2. The computer started to work very slowly.
Kindly help to solve these problems.
If smbody have this E16GCIMS.10E.zip file please attach it, I want to make backup bios, back to old version.

  • Getting values from TextArea(html)

    let's say I have two files. page1.jsp and page2.jsp.
in page1.jsp I have a textarea with name="tArea", a button which will submit TextArea information to page2.jsp as parameters.
    on page2.jsp I will get that value that is being passed and I will print it out via String strTArea = request.getParameter("tArea");out.println(strTArea );
The problem comes when the parameter passed involves "carriage return" and "line feed". I can verify on the address bar that the parameter passed has the correct amount of "enters". but when I get the value via "request.getParameter()", the data is malformed turning "enters" into mere spaces.
(enter = line feed + carriage return)
So, anyone has encountered the same problem? Might want to help me out because I need the correct data from that parameter. Any ideas are welcome.

I will consider this topic solved.

See if this helps in your situation:
OK, all you people all over the world who have been having the same problem as me for weeks, months, a lifetime, here it is! If your warning/error reads "iTunes could not connect to the Music Store. The network connection was refused" and then the BS about checking to make sure your connection is active, well I found something on a forum at Digg.com that with one click WORKED LIKE MAGIC and I'm a happy camper now, rockin to stuff I finally got from the store.
Now before I print the fix, my previous situation was: I could connect to the Apple store site for products, etc. and could check my account, but I could not connect to the music store at all. In every other way, my internet connectivity was flawless. I tried to solve the problem, shut down every firewall or antivirus program I had, searched forums, fiddled with the registry (and THAT was a stupid move!), reinstalled itunes like HOW MANY TIMES, and even finally got a written email reply from iTunes support when I waah.., waah..., waah..ed long enough and they gave an answer that was WORSE than useless. Months passed. So if the above in total or in part describes you, her it is. It's safe and if it doesn't work, you can put things back the way they were without any problem.
This is the quote from the forum at Digg.com that did it for me:
"figured out the problem thanks to Peter on the badapple forums, in his great assistance:
"In your windows\system32\drivers\etc directory there is a file called hosts. Open it in notepad. You will see a line
    127.0.0.1 phobos.apple.com
place a # in front of that line so that it looks like this:
    #127.0.0.1 phobos.apple.com
and save the file. your problem should be resolved!"
That's it guys and gals. Also you might be sure that the phobos.apple.com domain is specifically allowed by your firewall/A-V software. Let me know if it helped!

SUCCESS!!! I tried many variations on this and it finally worked. Yes, as life4living says, you have to open the "hosts" file that you can find in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
    ... use NotePad ...
At the bottom of the file, I found
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    and nothing about phobos.
AFter many attempts, I changed the end of the HOSTS file to this:
    # 127.0.0.1 localhost
    # 127.0.0.1 phobos.apple.com
and now iTunes music store and podcasts open up just fine.
Strange. The # character means "this is a comment" - so it's basically the same as removing the line completely.
The address 127.0.0.1 means "my machine" and this address is used by other apps such as Google Desktop. Hatching it out, however, does not adversely affect Google Desktop. So basically you have to hatch out any 127.0.0.1 address in the HOSTS file and then iTunes will work!
    Try it...
(I did, also, add phobos.apple.com to my "trusted sites" in Internet Explorer settings, but I don't think this was essential.)
After performing the above I found it only worked once after rebooting. I uninstalled Spybot Search and Destroy because it wouldn’t maintain some of the start up settings and cookies were getting nuked by another program I have in start up (Windows Washer).
Some other threads said to check firewall settings. I have free AVG. I went in and okay’d anything to do with iTunes. I also added the iTunes program to the list of approved processes in the AVG list and it seems iTunes is now working! Hope this helps!

    It's for windows.
    1. Press the Start Button in the (default) bottom
    left hand corner.
    2. Click on "My Computer".
    3. Click on (Default) C:.
    4. Find "WINDOWS" and open.
    5. Find "system 32" and open.
    6. Find "drivers" and open.
    7. Find "ect" and open.
    8. Find "hosts" and open.
    9. For a XP, a popup will open and show options to
    open it in.
    10. Select "Notepad" or "Word" or what ever you use
    for writing a document.
    11. At the bottom, if it says "127.0.0.1 localhost"
C&P This Over the 127.0.0.1 localhost:
    #127.0.0.1 localhost
    #127.0.0.1 phobos.apple.com
    If it only has 127.0.0.1 phobos.apple.com, add a "#"
    at the beginning.
    12. Restart your computer.
    Hope that helps!

    This helped my error! Thanx!

  • Bug: Navigation: Save As Dialog Boxes in Windows (thus any application) goes to Computer Drive C - instead of Quick Access

Bug: Navigation: Save As Dialog Boxes in Windows (thus any application) still have its legacy behavior implemented and navigates to a computer drive, by preselecting and letting the user start at Computer > Drive C - instead of Quick Access.
This is simply a forgotten correction after Quick Access has been introduced that needs to be corrected for Quick Access to work effectively (in a valuable way for the user) with files not just during create and modify operations on files - but also Open
file - using File Dialog Boxes (although users may use launch instead for Opening files using i.e. Explorer or navigation from shortcuts on the desktop).
This missing change of File Dialog Box behavior is unintended and now contradicts the new design with Quick Access for faster navigation (so you should not have to start with a scroll and extra navigation to look for Quick Access (contradiction:
    i.e. QUICK Access)
Please support the new navigation provided by Quick Access intended to give Quick Access - thus Save As must be able to start here.
For variability, may be provide an overriding option in Explorer>Folder Options>General (if you change the default behaviour in the File Dialogue) to have Save As start at Computer > Drive C.
! Remember to do the change for the Common File Dialog as well - used by most widespread software applications in the Adobe software applications portfolio, i.e. Adobe Photoshop CS6
