Have several users pending waiting for policy paths to become accessible.

The dirs are being created in the right paths. but no quotas are set etc.

  • NSM 3.0.4 "Enforce Policy Path" problem

    Hi,
I have run into a big problem using "Enforce Policy Path"
Due to some SAN changes we have created new USER volumes
And we are using "enforce policy path" for the user move proccess.
The problem is that if i run enforce policy path on say 200 users.
Every user will end up in the eliglible que wating for the policy to alow moves, so far so good.
When the policy eventualy alow moves the NSM engine will decide where to put the homedirs.
The problem is that NSM will loock at the volume list and pick the one volume whit most free space
and then the engine will send all my 200 users to that volume, even if its about to run full.
The engine will not change desination during the run even if the run will take 10 houers.
This is a realy big problem. I have filld volumes a cuple of times and it is not plessent to sort out that mess afterwards.
The dicison where to put the user shuld be made when the copying is begining, not when the policy alow moves.
Is this work as design or have i missed somthing?
    The system:
    NSM ENgine: NSM 3.0.4 running on SLES11 sp1 OES11
    User volumes: OES11 cluster on SLES11 sp1
we are not using any kind of quota at this custumer

    Johan,
I believe we've addressed your concerns directly through our Support
team, but for anyone else experiencing similar behavior:
NSM calculates target path distributions when an event is put on the
queue. For large management actions, like an "Enforce Policy Path"
action with multiple target paths, using an "Available free space"
distribution method may well mean that all queued events are given the
same target path, since that path had more free space when the event was
    initially created.
Therefore, if even or nearly-even distributions across multiple target
paths are desired, using the "Random" distribution method may be the
better choice for a large management action.

  • Path to become a DBA

    Hi buddies,
I do have something crawling in my mind.
Would like to know whats the path to become a DBA. I did my OCP around one year ago in Oracle 9i DBA track.
Now working as a database executive, where my job task is to provide support for the client in generating reports, counts, batch load and many many more things in maintaining the database. I also spent 20 % of my working time in PL/SQL, web PL SQL, and so on.
    My SQL has improved dramatically.
I have been here for 6 months.
Is this a way to become a DBA as well?
Is there a lot more to learn being in this track? I believe being strong in SQL is equally important for a DBA but its just my perception. Please do comment. I am not doing anything to do with DBA tasks except for small things like creating tables, job scheduler and so on.
I am a completely different person now compared to when I stepped in. I have worked before but nothing to do with Oracle.
Please advice. Is this how we start off to become a DBA or am I totally in a wrong track?
Hope to hear from all of you.
    Thank You so much.

In my part of the world, the term 'executive' automatically means someone above mid-management level. (and even that is not a precise description) Certainly not someone who does the low-level work you describe. A "database executive" calls to my mind something akin to a CIO.

Thank You so much. You might want to review these threads:
Re: difference between Oracle Apps DBA and Oracle ERP Consultant
    Re: Future of Oracle DBA
I'm always amused and confused by questions about career that seem to indicate a beliefe that one punches certain tickets then applies for a job description that somehow magically matches. DBA (no matter how you describe it as "core", "apps", "executive" or whatever) is not an entry level position. Anyone who hires someone into a DBA position without some proof of real-world experience is not a company I'd want to work for. So, one gets into a DBA position by doing a good job at what they are currently doing, develop a good working relationship with the DBAs there, show an aptitude and let it be known what you are doing on your own (self study, practice on you own system, etc). An opportunity should eventually present itself. In my own career, beyond my initial job in a designated 'trainee' position, I've never sought out a change of job responsibilities ... they always came to me by the process described in one of the threads referenced above.

  • Is this the right path to become a Oracle 10g DBA

I installed Oracle 10g XE with the intention of bringing myself upto speed for Oracle DBA course for Oracle 10g.
Now, let me give my background. I have done lot of programming on PL/SQL on Oracle 8i, but that was more than 4 years ago. I have been more functional for past 4 years. Now I am am trying to get into DBA role.
What all should I focus on XE, in order to prepare myself for Oracle 10g DBA course?
    Thanks in advance.

Is installing XE the right path to becoming a DBA?
I would say that it isn't! XE is perfect if you need a production database and can fit it within the XE limitations. XE is also perfect if you want a Oracle DB with out any of the DBA fuzz. If you want to learn you should install Enterprise Edition. You can get the software on oracle.com, and I believe that you can use it for free as long as you do not do any production on it. XE is not shipped with enterprise manager (oem). However it is shipped with the Enterprise Edition, so another argument for installing that and not XE.
So to summarize it: Get a Enterprise Edition!

  • Please Help: Career Path for becoming a SQL DBA

    Hi All
I am a Software developer with around 15 months of experience in .Net 2.0 and VSTO.
I am currently working in a SQLServer 2000  project.
I feel more interest to work with database than front end coding.
Can anyone suggest what need to be done for the one to be a DBA.
Could you please provide more details on the roles and responsibilities and the scope for career development on becoming a DBA.
In what Timeline can i be a  DBA. After becoming a DBA what are the career options available. Please help me out in deciding my career
    Thanks in Advance,
    Sidharth

On these days DBA is an abstract level word. DBA can be further classified to Development DBA , Production DBA , Data warehouse dba, ETL DBA , DB Architect DBA and even may be REPORTING DBA.  Each job has its own significance. Role for each dba may differ. Some time DBA perform multiple role in an organization (in my case i am doing Architecting / part time Production DBA  and Dev DBA role).
In addition to Kalman suggestion, what you can do is , you can start from Virtual labs provided by Microsoft.  If you ask the timeline, its all depends. Hands on experience is the key.

  • Changing policies to use DFS namespaces

We recently rolled out DFS replication and namespaces. I want to change the target in my policies from \\server\Home to the DFS namespace. I've followed the document and put {{\\server\Home}} in the Description of the namespace. The server hasn't actually changed, just the path statement in the policy target. I've created a test policy and it works when creating new users. My problem is with existing users. Storage Manager is up to date with the latest version.
This is the behaviour I see:
I change the target in the policy to the namespace. I go to Management Actions and Manage the user. In Pending Events, I see a Bypassable event with the message: Waiting for policy paths to become accessible -- 27:File system path already exists. When I bypass the event and Watch the file system, I see the folder on the server renamed to username-FSMOVE. A new folder is created and the data is copied. In Pending Events, the rest of the actions pass through fine. Sometimes the Home Directory attribute in AD is updated, mostly it is not.
My question is, is there any way to bypass all the data copies and simply update the Storage Manager database and the AD attribute? New users behave correctly, existing ones just need to be updated with the new path. I have nearly 100,000 users and several thousand groups. Clicking "bypass" one by one is a chore I don't look forward to. I'm almost tempted to simply wipe out SM and install new.
    Any suggestions?

    stober,
The good news is that you can multi-select events in Pending Events -
Ctrl+A to select an entire page of events, then clicking 'Bypass', works
just fine. You can also change the page size for the event list - by
default the paging is 1000 events, but it can be set to any number. I
wouldn't recommend trying to put 100,000 in the Pending Event list at
once -- the UI will be extremely slow -- but 5,000 is more than
reasonable for this sort of task.
What you're really after, though, is the Assign Home Directory
management action. This sets the Home Directory attribute on the target
users for the management action without doing any file system copies.
That should save you a great deal of work!

    nvdhaar,
By default in NSM 3.0.3 and earlier, Storage manager attempts to check
for path overlaps across all paths in all policies -- not just those in
use during an event, but also policies not involved in the event. In
later versions, this behavior is off by default, but installations
upgraded from 3.0.3 and earlier to 3.0.4 or 3.1.x may still have this
    flag enabled.
To disable this behavior, it is necessary to edit the Engine
configuration file. On Linux this is
    /etc/opt/novell/storagemanager/engine/config/nsmengine.conf; on Windows
    this is C:\ProgramData\Novell\Storage
Manager\Engine\config\nsmengine.cfg. In both versions, look for the
Config > Engine > ParanoidOpenFileCheck element and make sure its value
    is set to 0.
All of this having been said, it's possible that a change has been made
to these DFS targets so that there is an actual policy path conflict. I
recommend double-checking the target paths in the 'Locaties' namespace
and making certain that target paths are not duplicated between DFS folders.

This sounds like something we'd need to work with you directly on.
Please send an email (if you haven't already) to

log file (found in /var/opt/novell/storagemanager/engine/log by default)
and a copy of a Runtime Config report from NSM to that email -- those
are some basic troubleshooting things we'll need. Thanks!

  • Software restriction policy not working correctly

    Ladies and Gents,
we run a windows server 2008r2 environment.
we have a software restriction policy in place for quite some time now and it's been working fine until about a week ago. here's how we have it setup:
Enforce = All Software files except libraries (such as DLLs). + All Users.
    Security Level = Disallowed
    Designated File Types=
    Defaults
    Additional Rules:
    C:\* = Disallow.
The rest of the rules are paths for files and folders that we have set as Unrestricted.
Since about a week ago, our security team discovered that they can open any allowed file type such as text file, and then go to file and click on open. In the open dialog box they would type
in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and then click and open it would actually open the hosts file.
I even tried adding a path rule for C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts with Disallow, and it’s still allows opening this file for non admins.
Any ideas as to why is software restriction policy not blocking access to any files or folders that are not explicitly allowed via a path rule?
Any help or comments are much appreciated.
    Mohsen Almassud

You are moving in a wrong way. Software Restriction Policies are designed to prevent users to launch executables/applications. It cannot prevent you from opening TXT file, because it is not an executable. In order to prevent TXT files, you have to block
notepad.exe executable. It is very different technology.
You must move to a permission configuration. If there are folders users should not access, remove them from respective folder's ACL. You must be careful with restricting user access to system folders (%systemroot%), because you may block critical applications
and eventually no one will be able to log on to server, because logon-dependant paths are not accessible due to restrictions in the ACL.

  • MSI Package Software Installations and uninstallations by group policy and sccm

    Hi,
I have a domain comprising approx. 30 ADCs, 5000 clients and 50 OUs. Our developers have created a c# Program for fetching some information from client machines and displaying them on their
screen on bootup (presence of 2 particular softwares, antivirus presence and its update date, OS patches updation etc... ). This program(.msi) and .net framework 4.0 is required to be pushed to all client machines. We have SCCM server through which we can
push software to be installed on clients. There are no. of ADCs for controlling different sites and OUs. Now I need to push this msi and .net framework to all clients. Dotnet  framework I pushed from SCCM & it is successful.
Till today I have pushed this .MSI package using Group policy software installation settings using a local sharepath & sysvol.
In Local Share path , MSI source is availbale at only one ADC and all clients  contact this adc only to install software and its taking very long time to boot.
Using Sysvol share path , MSI Source is available at All ADC and All Clients Contact their Site's ADC to install software.Only Win 7, win 8 machines are getting install and software is  not able to install on XP and vista machine. What might be the
problem for xp machine getting it from sysvol path?
The error for XP machines is that Sysvol path is not accessible/ source is not available.
Now I need to have some other fullproof method to apply it. How I need to push this .MSI packages to all sites (ADCs) in my child domain from my PDC.
I want to know the steps & methods for installing & uninstalling this .MSI package using Group policy and SCCM as well.
       Thanks for replying...

    Hi,
Based on your description, I want to confirm whether we have more than one domain. If we have more than domain, it is suggested that we can push the
    MSI package from each domain.
Regarding how to use Group Policy to remotely install software, the following article can be referred to for more information.

In addition, you also mentioned how to use SCCM to do this, in order to get better assistance, we can ask help in the following SCCM forum.

  • How to create a file path in OS X Mavericks that works like a link.

    Hello,
In earlier OS, I was able to copy and paste file path (which becomes a link) into an email. Once the recipient received the email, click on the link and takes directly to the location of the file. Since I've updated to OS X Mavericks, copy and paste with link intact doesn't work.
Is there a work-around to this problem.
    Thanks!
    sntm

    Hello,
I've tried the option key but don't see the selection "Copy Link"
    See below:

  • Convert path to line?

I have a vector shape. I want to take one side of the shape and take those points to make a new line. Thanks

I should also mention that the Knife tool can be used to open a closed path. I think the easiest way to do this is to drag with the Knife tool across a segment you'd like to delete. This creates a new point, and if you delete that point, the path will become an open one. (It's a bit mysterious how that works...)
You can also click the Knife tool on a point, but this typically creates two points in place of one, which I find a bit confusing. (Does it create just one new point? Or does it create two new points surrounding the original?)
You can also drag the Knife tool across the entire object. Come to think of it, this may be the best way to use this tool, as it seems to immediately split the closed path into two open paths. From there, you can select and delete the portion of the original object you don't need, and then continue to delete any unneeded points from the remaining open path with the Subselection tool.

  • Unwanted paths showing after cropping to make a repeat pattern tile.

I'm trying to make a repeat pattern tile (using CS5 on Windows 7), but when I crop the pattern, the expanded paths underneath become visible as on the flowers below.
This is what I did after creating the artwork:
Used the rectangle tool to make a box with fill/stroke directly on top of the artboard..
Select all > Expand (selecting stroke only, not fill)
Deselect the cropping box and grouped the remaining objects.
Reselected the cropping box and grouped all objects
    Pathfinder > Crop
I'm guessing it may have something to do with the fact I used a gradient on the flowers but have no idea how to resolve it. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
PS. Please excuse me if this explanation is really poorly worded...I've only ever used Illustrator for fashion technical sketches so my knowledge is pretty limited.

Followed your advice above, and hopefully it will work. The only issue is it's a bit time consuming they way I'm doing it, as I'm having to delete the outermost objects first, then delete any objects which are partially inside the rectangle, otherwise I find some of the objects inside the rectangle are deleted too:
At the moment for the objects that are partially inside the box, I'm using the scissors tool to cut the path where it crosses the rectangle. Is there an easier solution to this problem?

I need to absolutely confirm the path to becoming an OCP.

I see you are specifically talking about 10g DBA OCP.
The key points are that exams/prequisites may be taken in any order however a certificate can only be awarded when all pre-requisites are met.
The strict answer to this is no (OCA and OCP may be acheived at the same time if an exam which is a compoent of 10g OCA is taken last).
For an example let us take Chris:
    - In January Chris passes 1z0-043
    - In Febrary attends an approved hands on course, submits it for approval with respect of 10g DBA OCP and Chris's hands on course is confimred verified on OCP Database/Certview a couple of weeks later.
    - In March Chris passes 1z0-042
    - On the morning of April 1st Chris passes 1z0-047
--->--- Chris's success gets transmitted from Peason VUE to the Oracle OCP database and processes occur on the OCP Database.
    - Chris checks Certview arround April 14 and (hopefully) discovers shortly awarded the following backdated to April 1.
    (1) 10G DBA OCP
    (2) 10G DBA OCA
    (3) SQL OCE
